Firefox shortcut will not open firefox, only beeps.

Beep is the same as critical stop, no dialog box shows.
Shortcut points to firefox.exe, which will not open.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Firefox window will not open - firefox.exe closes by itself

Hello,
I have a problem with Firefox not being able to start when I double-click the icon on my desktop. I'm not sure what version I was using before, but I uninstalled whatever version I had before and installed the latest version (14.0.1), with no effect.
I can see that when I try to open Firefox, the firefox.exe process will stay open for about five seconds, then disappear. I've tried to open Firefox in Safe Mode and open the Profile Manager via the command line, but the window never opens, the process always appears for a few seconds and disappears on its own.
Anybody know what is causing this or how it can be fixed?

Hey, thanks for all the help so far. Sorry for the late response.
I followed your instructions, even getting rid of my bookmarks and personal data when uninstalling, and here's what happened:
After installing, I kept "Launch Firefox" checked at the last prompt. A window opened, it asked me whether I wanted to import anything from other browsers, I said no. Then it opened the regular Firefox browser window! But, I closed it and re-opened Firefox just to make sure it would still work...then it did the same thing it was doing before, opened for a few seconds and then closed on its own without opening the window. :-( So, it would open only once, the initial time and then that's it.
I don't get a crash reporter at all. No visual confirmation that Firefox is trying to open, except the process appearing a few seconds in the Task Manager and disappearing.
My antivirus program is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012. I do virus scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware occasionally. I don't have Windows Firewall turned on right now because it caused problems with another application.
This problem is particularly pesky...I don't know what happened, until a couple of days ago Firefox was running fine...
Any further help or suggestions would be appreciated!

• My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
that leaves
a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.

• Firefox 7 will not open, only shows up in processes, after Oct's Windows 7 update and force restart.

Been unable to get FF to open out side of it showing up in the processes. No browser window to even tinker with settings. Uninstalled the latest Windows updates, restarted and still won't open. Then uninstalled recent flash update since that updated as well. Still no go. Uninstalled FF, reboot, re-install FF, reboot, still nothing. I have tried opening in safe mode and FF will not open in safe mode either. Same again after turing off firewall and virus protection. Ran virus and spyware programs, nothing came up in those. Ran them again while in safe mode, just in case, and nothing found on my system.
The Windows and Adobe updates are the only things that have changed on my system since last restart 2 days ago.
No window, no nothing, only FF in the processes takin up 50% of my CPU and usin 30,000k in memory.
What else can I try to get my FF back?

I have the same problem (and with Mozilla Thunderbird) running with Windows Vista OS. The non-opening problem was preceded by a long period where Firefox and other programs were taking absurdly long times, such as one minute, to open. Starting Windows in "safe mode with networking" solves the problems. Similarly, I just found that If I run msconfig.exe and select "diagnostic startup" then Firefox and Thunderbird both start and start up really fast (that is, when most services and startup programs are prevented from starting). However there is no network so they do not connect. I then turned on (in msconfig) enough processes to get networking running and Firefox and Thunderbird still start up really fast.
I am fairly certain there are no viruses on my computer, so the only other possibility is that some program/registry-entry is preventing the OS from working properly. The problem with windows that it is virtually impossible to find something like this, since the Windows OS has very weak self-diagnostics, and the registry is absurdly complicated with over half a million entries on my computer.
If you can do a "repair install" then this will probably fix the problem, but I do not think that Vista has this feature. Alternatively an upgrade of the OS might fix it, such as from Vista to Windows 7.

• Firefox 30 will not open new windows maximized

I use Firefox on 2 machines, one at home and one at work. I updated both to Firefox 30.
My home machine, with Windows 7 opens new windows maximized.
My work machine, however, will not open new windows maximized. It will only open them at the last remembered window size. I have tried deleting localstore.rdf and this does not solve the issue.
The window will open maximized on Firefox 28 on the same machine.

• Firefox update will not open. I reverted to 15.0.1 and it works.

I am running Windows 7. The problem began with update 25.0.1. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled 25.0.1 several times with no success. Quit using Firefox for a time, then tried installing 26.0. Still would not run. So I reverted to 15.0.1, and it will run.
Immediately after installing the upgrade, Firefox will run. After rebooting my computer, Firefox will not open. An error "not responding" appears and I have to go into Task Manager to close Firefox.
I have tried everything in your help files that pertains to my computer. I really like Firefox, but am getting a bit frustrated.

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Thank you.

• I run mac os 10.4.11 and firefox 7 will not open, and I get an error message saying firefox is not supported on this version of mac os. is there a different version I can download? Am I missing something?

firefox used to work no problem, I updated firefox a few month ago, now firefox will not open and I get the error message as above

As of Firefox 4.0 and newer one needs both OSX 10.5+ and a Intel Mac.
The last version to work on a Intel Mac using OSX 10.4.* is Firefox 3.6.*

• Firefox reset completely, attempted to restore old Firefox data, will not open saying that profile could not be loaded.

Hello,
When returning to my computer, I attempted to open Firefox and received a prompt to either start Firefox in safe mode or reset it. I tried safe mode at first then proceeded to reset it as well. Losing all of my add-ons/extensions/etc, I tried to solve the problem by restoring my profile with a folder that appeared on my desktop titled "Old Firefox Data". After following instructions to restore my profile, a window now pops up saying that my profile could not be loaded and Firefox just does not open at all. Is there anyway to recover my old profile? I tried following another suggested method but when searing for my profile through the files, it could not be found.
Thank you!

• Since loading the new version of Firefox it will not open. When I try to download Firefox 4 or older versions I get a messase that says I must close Firefox first. Everything else is closed!

A new version of Firefox downlaoded the other day and now Firefox will not open at all. I tried to redownload version 4 and an earlier version (3.6) but I get a message that says that "Firefox must be close first in order to continue". There was no other box open at that time. What can I do to get Firefox to work?

Hey, thanks for the info. Upon further reading into the help section, I realized that I had to uncheck spybot tea timer to get the downloads to save & open. Wish I had read that a couple of months back... Works fine now anywho, thank you for your response.
Have a good one!

• Firefox 4 will not open thunderbird for mailto and Send links

I am using Windows 7 business.
Since update FF4 will not open Thunderbird when a mailto link or send link is clicked. My system has Thunderbird selected as the default mail client and these links work in other browsers.
Following some online help suggestions about selecting Firefox's default mail client:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used%20by%20Firefox?s=mailto&as=s
There are no options for 'mailto' or 'mail' in the content type window.

I've suffered with this for weeks and finally worked around it.
Thunderbird was set as the default client, but it didn't work with some other clients as well, so I went to Default Programs / Set Default Programs, selected Thunderbird, which was already set as the default mail client, selected 'Choose defaults for this program' and hit Save. That fixed it for PDF Complete, but not for FF4.
In FF4, I changed the mailto option to Always Ask (it had been Thunderbird(default)), then chose Thunderbird as the client after picking Send Link. that worked, so the next time I checked the box in the dialog to always use Thunderbird and now it works. grrr.
