Firefox slower due to add-ons.

This is not a specific question, as it is more of a general frustration with Firefox. I notice Firefox is much faster if I disable many add-ons I have installed over the years. It seems like Firefox gets a bad wrap because some add-ons slow down Firefox. Aren't there benchmarking tools available to show before and after results of using an add-on? I am using 5 out 19 add-ons at the moment and performance is a lot faster. All this time though, I just thought Firefox sucked when disabling add-ons leads me to believe that the culprit for the slow performance is due to an add-on.
Anyway, I think if Mozilla wants to protect their reputation more, the benchmarking tools should be a tool a browser user can interact with.

Chrome has built-in a "Task Manager" It allows users to see all their extensions in use, their CPU, Memory, etc ...
It would be nice if firefox had something like this. Would make narrowing down which addon is becoming a resource hog.
I got over a dozen addons and I know at least one of them is making firefox slower the longer I keep it open. Eventually, it would eat up 50% my CPU when clicking on links. I have a dual core leading me to believe the addon is not multithreaded? Can't pin point which addon it is yet.

    Hi jeff8478,
You should look at [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+has+just+updated+tab+shows+each+time+you+start+Firefox this article about that specific issue] and the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved]. These should give you all the information you need!
    If that doesn't work:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    Hopefully this helps!

EDIT: Sorry I meant the "Save Complete" add-on, not Download Helper.

Be sure "Add-on Bar" is checked (click on "Add-on Bar" to check or un-check)

  • Firefox won't install add-ons even after clean install

Add-on installation fails in one of the following ways:
    1. Unexpected installation error -203, or
    2. The add-on appears in the "Extensions" tab as "Not compatible with Firefox 3.6.3", even though it is.
Sometimes I get the first error, sometimes the second, but all attempts to install add-ons fail with one of them.
I have tried all the troubleshooting advice in the knowledge bases (e.g. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox#Unexpected_installation_error_-203) but with no success. I even did a clean reinstall of Firefox in a new directory (as described here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox#On_Mac_OS_X) but the problem remains.
    What else can I do?

I have the same problem : impossible to install or update extensions; either by download (error -228) or by installing a local file (error -203). This is true for all situations : existing or new Firefox profile, different system users, etc.
I searched the kb, asked Google and so, but no solutions worked. The problem happens on all current versions of Firefox : stable, nightly,32 bits and 64 bits.

I am making heavy use of soft links on my systems : ~/Library/* (temp, cache, preferences, etc) is spread onto several physical volumes, and the filetree is done with soft links. No applications has any problem, except Firefox.

  • Why is Firefox having problems with add-ons since I upgraded to 3.6.9?

Firefox upgraded it self today to the latest version 3.6.9 and now my add-ons don't start. I can still see them in the Tools>Add-ons>Extensions window. But they are not running. I have allready tried to delete the extensions.ini, extensions.rdf and extensions.cache files but it didn't help. And if I click on any of the Option buttons in the Add-ons window it just freezes. Firefox keeps runing and seemes unafected but the Add-ons window doesn't respond any more. I can't close it and it even stayes open after I close Firefox.

cor-el, thank you for your reply.
I tried disabling all add-ons and resetting all user preferences but it didn't fix the problem. So I tried your second recommendation. And when I booted Firefox with the new Profile everything was OK. I added my add-ons and they worked great. The only problem was that if I closed Firefox the new profile I created disappeared. The old, corrupt profile was still there but the new one wasn't. In the end I even deleted the old, default profile. This only made the matter worse. Every newely created profile would still disapeare if I closed Firefox and without a profile Firefox wouldn't start, saying that it is already running in the background and that I should stop the process or reboot my PC. Needless to say there was no firefox.exe process running in the background and even rebooting wouldn't make Firefox start. Well not knowing what to do next I did a compete uninstall of Firefox, rebooted my PC and installed a fresh copy of Firefox 3.6.9. I imported my bookmarks and added my add-ons and (for now) everything works as it should.
Thank you again for your effort.

  • Everytime I close and reopen firefox, my themes and add-ons are gone and I need to re-install them.

To be more specific, my chosen custom theme will be deleted, buttons for add-ons such as "white on black" will have to be added again, and settings such as the preference to save downloads on my desktop instead of a "Downloads" folder will be reset to the latter.
Also, when I reopen the browser, I get the Firefox Start Page, as I have specified, but I also get other tabs such as the homepages for greasemonkey and userstyles.org.
Please do help me if you can, I need a solution. I choose a theme that changes the entire skin to black because I work on the PC for long hours, and I need dark colours to help my eyes cope with the stress. It's going to be a massive strain if I have to re-install the theme everytime I close and reopen the browser.

I've tried that, but the problem persists.

  • Firefox crashing with no add-ons or plug-ins

Yesterday, I removed all of my add-ons and deleted all of my plug-ins except for Mozilla Default. Firefox ran smoothly all day yesterday after that. Now today, it's beginning crashing again. (RtlpWaitForCriticalSection | RtlEnterCriticalSection) is the signature of the crash. I don't know what's causing this at all. There is nothing left that could be contributing to this as far as I can tell.

  • Firefox process does not stop. Reset Firefox and Restart with Add ons disabbled is also not working.

I always need to stop firefox in the task manager.
Resetting and restarting without add ons is not possible because Firefox hangs on shut down.

Hi, I was experiencing the same problem since a couple of weeks. I am on Firefox 18, WinXP SP3.
The way I got rid of it was by '''removing a file called secmod.db ''' in my firefox profile directory. Firefox recreated the file and the problem is gone.
By default the profile directory on WinXP is C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\something.default
I guess on Windows Vista and up, the folder is somewhere below c:\users. Doing a search for .default might help you find it. I think it is a hidden/system folder though, so you might want to turn their visibility on.
    Hope that helps

  • Whenever a new window (or even Firefox program windows like Add-ons, Bookmarks, Settings, etc) is opened, Firefox freezes for 30+ seconds before opening it.

I have reset Firefox, then reinstalled, removed all of the extensions and plugins, uninstalled and reinstalled Flashplayer, updated Java, etc. I have also created new profiles, which have the same problem.
The problem does not appear in Safe Mode, which is odd because I have disabled all of the built-in extensions and have run the program in regular mode, and the problem still occurs. Right now I am using no extensions, no plugins, and no themes, and Firefox still freezes for a short period of time whenever I try to open a new window.
This problem does not happen in IE or Chrome. I have not installed any programs recently; the problem started happening randomly.

    Hi,
[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode] also disables the themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. and hardware acceleration - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u Advanced] > '''General''' > '''Use hardware acceleration when available'''. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if a theme, or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart - a quick way to restart Firefox is to press [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/GCLI '''Shift''' + '''F2'''], type '''restart''' and '''Enter'''.

  • Firefox keeps opening the Add-ons page

Whenever I launch Firefox or open a new tab, the add-ons page opens. This has been happening since I updated to Firefox 4 a few days ago. I've tried disabling all the add-ons I have but it makes no difference. I've also turned off updates for add-ons, that didn't help either.
    I'm running Windows XP.
    Thanks.

It's possible that the page is included in the home page setting.

  • Why does Firefox regularly lose my add-ons and I have to reset and re-install (Download helper, Status-4-evar, Google Lite)

I lose the add-ons when Firefox automatically upgrades to the latest version but this is not the only time. It may work for 5-10 days without a problem then without warning or error, it just losess the add-ons, upgrade or no upgrade. This is most annoying as they will not re-download and re-install and all I can do is reset Firefox then re-customise the browser again to my look and feel, then have to download and re-install these add-ons again. It seems like I am doing this continually over and over again.

Thanks Cor-el but I am with azgirl7 that trying to follow the instructions is not easy. I have had some success by copying all my profiles from C:\Users\Brendan (my name) \AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles to a spare folder I have created. When Firefox updates or changes, I delete the profiles and copy them back from the spare folder. But this does not work every time. All in all, it is very time consuming and one that Mozilla should have an easier method to protect as well restore.

  • Installed Firefox 5, Receiving Incompatible Add-Ons Window

I just installed FF 5 and after clicking on the shortcut I receive a window "Incompatible Add-Ons" with the following listed:
    Garmin Communicator 2.9.2
    MS NET 1.2.1
    Adobe DLM 1.5.2.35
    Adblock Plus 1.3.3
The 4 addons were automatically disabled. I then clicked on Check Now and the following updates wee found:
    Garmin Communicator 2.9.3.1
    Adblock Plus 1.3.9
I installed these 2 and received a message that FF encountered problems when updating some of your add ons. I reviewed the add ons and the Garmin Communicator 2.9.3.1 did not install. Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, how did it get resolved?

Either an add-on (or you) set an override for your Firefox version. To clear that:
    (1) Type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type '''usera''' and pause for Firefox to filter the list.
    (3) Right-click and reset any bolded lines that contain "override"
    Any luck?

  • Firefox removes my adblocker add-ons on its own.

On a roughly-weekly basis, I find that Firefox (ver 33.0.2) has both restarted itself and removed the add-ons AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, and NoScript. While I'd rather it not be restarting itself like that, it's the adblocker removal that I really hate. Is there some way to prevent this? Thanks.
