Firefox slows down on certain sites

Something is slowing down Firefox when browsing Facebook, Odnoslassniki and LinkedIn. Sometimes I get an error message of Java not responding but mostly I don't. Watching videos on YouTube from those websites also makes the computer slow down. However, RuTube works fine with hardly any hitches.
This is on a Windows 8.1 laptop with 4GB of RAM.
Things I've done:
-Checked on a laptop of a similar spec and Firefox on that machine doesn't slow down on the same sites, when using the same Wi-Fi network.
-Scanned with Malwarebytes several times over the past week.
-Reset Firefox and used no add-ons. The result is the same.
-Updated Flash player and Java to their latest versions.
I would really appreciate some help in getting Firefox to work smoothly :)

  • Firefox slows down when opening a site with animated gifs

After updating to FF4, I find that whenever I try to open a page that has multiple animated gifs on it, firefox slows down tremendously. CPU usage goes up to 50-75% and all animated gifs are moving really slow.
It's not only large animated gifs, but it also occurs on forums that have animated smilies. I never had this problem in FF 3.6 nor any other browser (IE, Chrome, Safari). If I start FF4.0 without any add-ons or plugins it does the same thing. Even with a fresh install. Does anyone have a solution to his problem? Since I can't use some of my favorite sites now with FF, without my pc slowing everything down.

Disabling the hardware acceleration worked for me!

  • In the last week, Firefox slows down until it's unusable after about 30 mins

As per the title. Firefox slows down until it is almost completely unresponsive the longer it is left open. When it is restarted, it works fine for a while but soon slows down a lot.
I have about 50 tabs open and have never experienced this issue at all. I still have plenty of RAM free. When it's slow, even tasks such as opening menus or using the awesome bar slow down massively.
I suspect a tab is at fault but can't think of an easy way to determine which one.

I'm using the same antivirus for the last year and never had this issue before. Disabling antivirus doesn't help either.

  • Safari and Firefox completely close on certain sites

I'm having trouble with safari and firefox closing down(disappearing) when I visit certain sites including some myspace profiles. I can open them right back up, but they will just close again when i visit a site that they don't like. I looked at the crash logs, but there isn't anything from these apps. I don't even get an error message, window just disappears and no arrows under the icons. anyone have an idea on how to fix this? thank you...

It's odd that both browsers shut down. One thing I notice from your "More system details" is that you don't have the latest Flash player plugin, at least for Firefox. You can check your version and update here:
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Hopefully that will help if the crashes are caused by Flash (e.g., rich media advertisements).

  • Loop slows down when certain parts of screen are active

Hi, I've noticed that one of my loops, which is set to run at 50ms, slows down significantly when certain other parts of the screen are active.
We have a dual screen setup where on the left side we have a bunch of controls and I'm also displaying the time that 50ms loop takes. On the 2nd screen, there is a tab control with several pages. When some of the pages are displayed (and those are the ones that are probably the "busiest" in terms of processing), the loop time slows down to anything in the range of 1-4 seconds.
The loop runs at 50ms when other lower-processing tabs are showing. It will also run at 50ms when any other window (another VI, another application) is hiding that right tab display. Actually, it'll run at 50ms if another window hides about half of that right tab
What can I do to be able to watch those tab pages and keep my loop running from slowing down? One of those tab pages is a fault message display, so it's good to watch while you're running a test!
    Thanks.

I would start by checking what you're displaying in your pages. You might be doing something that doesn't need to be done all the time.
I once ran into an issue where screen updates to a control in a tab would slow down the computer (100% CPU usage) even when another tab page was selected and would only stop when the tab was moved off the screen or when the control was moved out of the tab. Unfortunately, I was never able to reliably recreate that issue. In that case the problem was with updating the strings in an array of rings using a property node, but yours might be a different case.
If what I described sounds similar to what you're seeing (increased CPU usage even when the real culprit is not displayed) I would be interested in seeing a demo.
Try to take over the world!

  • Firefox crashes when visiting certain sites

Every time I visit certain sites (examples include Gmail, Youtube and Tumblr) Firefox just stops working. I already tried restarting, safe mode, resetting to the default state and clearing all data (cookies, passwords, cache, etc.), and none of that worked. Currently forced to use Chrome until this is fixed.

You can check the network.http.* prefs on the about:config page and reset all bold user set network.http prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu -> Reset.

First, if at all possible make a backup of the drive in its present configuration. If something goes wrong during repair attempts and makes things worse you will have a backup. You will have to decide how to work this in the light of any present backups you may have, for example, a backup that may be a few days out of date. In that case you may want to keep that one and make a second backup of this as they are now, though I realize people often don't have a lot of empty drives sitting around.
Boot from the System installer disc that came with your computer or is the one for the version you currently have on there, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and does a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

+Summary of above from BDaqua+ (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."

  • Firefox slow down (stuttering) on reaching 1.5GB memory.

I am having problem with Firefox -- as I keep using it (opening more tabs and stuff) it grows in memory usage. I think there might be leaks somewhere, but that is not by itself a problem -- I have plenty of memory.
However I repeatedly observe that upon reaching approximately 1.5GB of memory usage Firefox starts 'micro stuttering' -- scrolling is nowhere as smooth as it is when it just started, text input is not smooth and so on. This is supremely annoying. Firefox restart completely fixes the issue (until the next time), but it is also not a terribly convenient solution (tabs have to reload next time etc.).
This is observed both on Firefox 24 ESR and Firefox 28. The difference is that Firefox 28 takes much longer to reach 1.5GB barrier (so apparently there have been some optimizations).
I do use a bunch of addons. However disabling them is not really an option because I find 'clean' Firefox pretty much unusable (I'm coming from Opera 12).
I'd like to provide memory reports (from about:memory) however I need to understand how to anonymize them (they appear to contain lots of URLs some of which I'd rather not share).
Can these reports be used to pinpoint misbehaving addon (if there's one)?
Also -- are there 64 bit builds of Firefox 24 or 28? Basically non-alpha stuff with old-style UI? (I've downloaded some kind of alpha 64bit for FF 31 but it looks completely different and I'd rather not deal with it while it's still in alpha)

Ok, I've got annoyed enough by the problem to actually go out of my way and see how it can be reproduced. Turns out -- quite easily.
First of all -- I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with 16Gb of memory with 'classic' desktop (i.e. aero disabled). I'm using Nvidia GTX 760 with desktop extended to two displays (primary 16x10 monitor via DVI and secondary 19x10 TV via HDMI). Scrolling test is performed on the monitor.
Take clean Firefox installation -- specifically I've used FirefoxPortable_29.0.1_English.paf.exe (because I didn't want this experiment to affect anything I'm actually using on my box).
    Install two extensions:
    - SmoothWheel (AMO) -- this will be used to demonstrate 'stuttering'.
    - Flashblock -- this prevents flash stuff from possibly affecting the result.
Configure SmoothWheel (possibly not very relevant, but that's how I can easily see the problem):
    - Step size 100 px
    - Speed 0.2 sec
    - Advanced -> Adaptive step & duration -- > DISABLED
Open page www.exler.ru (yes, it's in russian, but you don't need to actually read it :)). Try scrolling through the page slowly and quickly. Scrolling with SmoothWheel addon should be very smooth and shouldn't result in excessive CPU usage.
Now without closing that page do the following:
    - Open rus.delfi.lv in a new tab. It's again in Russian, but I'm using this because it has a crapload of JS and lots of content.
    - Open about 25 more tabs from that page -- I'm basically using middle-click to open 25 pages in background.
    - Ensure that each of rus.delfi.lv pages is fully loaded -- to do this in each tab do End-Home-End-Home (yes, you need to use 'End' twice).
    - Wait for all pages to finish loading.
At this point Process Explorer shows FireFox memory usage of over 1GB on my machine.
Now go back to www.exler.ru page you have opened and try scrolling it.
In my case scrolling is much less smooth -- and quickly scrolling up and down results in a significantly increased CPU usage (unlike when doing this with only one tab open).
Furthermore now if you start closing open rus.delfi.lv tabs one after another, you'll notice a significant delay (freeze) after each page is closed -- until there are only a few pages remaining.
So yes, it looks like there's something seriously wrong somewhere in the innards -- basically if you have a bunch of tabs open something 'breaks' and causes Firefox to perform poorly when either running JS (because SmoothWheel is a JS extension) or when re-drawing/scrolling page (because that's what we are actually doing).
If you close all the rus.delfi.lv pages -- scrolling should go back to normal. But Firefox memory usage remains quite high in my case -- much higher than it is initially with only one tab open.

  • Why does firefox slow down when you reopen it whilst a file is still downloading?

If im downloading a file and close the browser so that only the download manager is left showing ion the taskbar and then attempt to reopen firefox to browse something new, it runs incredibly slowly.
So slow in fact that I have to close it (which in itself takes a while) and use internet explorer until the downloading has finished.

  • Firefox crashes immediately on certain sites and after a minute otherwise. It was working fine yesterday...

For some reason, Firefox doesn't consider this a crash, so it didn't give me a crash report. Also, whenever this happens, a window pops up saying, "Firefox has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution... A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." The annoying part is that the window appears to load correctly, but it freezes anyway. I'm using Vista and Firefox has been updated to the most recent version. Thank you for your help!

    Nuxar,
I don't know what you mean by VPN/Proxy? Where do I go to change this?
What I did do after reading your reply was I went to:
Tools>Options>Advanced>Connection Settings. I found the proxy @ "Use System Proxy Settings" and changed it to each of the following NO PRXY and AUTOMATIC PROXY SETTINGS. This didn't help me I kept getting the same crash error as at first. Each time I tried to change the proxy setting I found that when I went back to check that it had defaulted back to "Use System Settings"
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks Nuxar,

  • Can opening multiple tabs in Firefox slow down my computer (desktop)?

    No further details.

That is possible if there are a lot of tabs open with active content (plugins or scripts) that need to be updated. It shouldn't make a difference for websites that only have text on current computers. But be cautious with websites that have a lot of Flash content.
