Firefox sometimes takes 100% of one of my four CPUs under Windows (7)

A few times a day I'll hear the CPU fan running, or my PC starts responding slowly. Sometimes it won't open (maximize) from the task bar. I usually have to Control-Alt-Delete to go to processes. When I do, Fire Fox is using 100% of of of my quad CPU's processors. I have to kill the process to fix the problem.

I see the same problem as your client in Firefox 16 on Windows 7. To fix the problem, add clear: left to the style for leftColMain
#leftColMain {
    clear: left;     float: left;
    padding: 30px 0 0;
    position: relative;
    width: 210px;

    IIRC this file, sasl32.dll, should get installed onto %WINDIR%\system32 when you install DS5.2 windows version.
    You may run WinZIP and File/Open "d52diu.zip" (DS5.2 zip image) and look for "nsbasesys.zip", double click to Open it and you should find "sasl32.dll" there.

  • Firefox consumes almost 100% of one CPU unit regularly every 2 mins for cca 30sec.

    Every 2 mins (cca) one core of the CPU gets busy with firefox process. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall whole firefox but without success. I have removed all unnecessary ad-ons I had. Although last one I have added was Firebug (cca one month ago)[the issues begin cca one week ago].

  • When I click on a link, firefox sometimes creates 100s of 'searching bookmarks and history' tabs until I cold power down.

    If I restore Firefox to save existing tabs (including the 100s of 'searching bookmarks and history' tabs), I will receive approximately 3 times a day a 'Firefox terminated unexpectedly' message. What is triggering the proliferation of tabs?

    See [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]]
    You can have infinite tabs opening if you have selected Firefox as the application to handle a file if you get an Open with download window.<br />
    Firefox should not be selected as the application to handle a file and you have to remove the action that is associated with that file type.
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions ("File handling in Firefox 3 and SeaMonkey 2" and "Reset Download Actions")
    You may need to delete the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/mimeTypes.rdf mimeTypes.rdf] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] to reset all actions or set that action in Tools > Options > Applications to 'Always Ask'.

  • Firefox use 100% of one CPU (Mac)

    I use last firefox (32) on MacOS X 10.6.8.
    Sometime firefox start using 100% a one CPU, from that time the only way to stop it was to quit (it take severals seconds, sometime it hang). When it start i can close all windows, firefox continue using 100% CPU.
    I follow standard instructions (update to lastest, disable plugins and extensions...) it do not work.
    I not a configuration to reproduce the problem : keep iCloud mail open in one tab is the way to reproduce the problem sometime after a few minutes, sometime after some hours : but it also happend sometime with no iCloud open...

  • Systemd takes 100% of a single thread and will not allow shutdown

    A few systemd updates ago I started to have this problem. On update, systemd takes up 100% of one of my four threads (switching theads on every so often according to Conky) and will not let me reboot properly. If I run "sudo poweroff" it broadcasts that the system is going down then just doesn't. No amount of waiting after the update is finished sees systemd finish whatever it's atempting to do.
    Holding the power button to force the computer off causes it to be unbootable. The system hangs as it checks the file system. No amount of waiting sees the file system check completed.
    So far the only "fix" that I've found is to load the system up in a ch-root environment and roll systemd back.
    I really don't know enough to fix this myself and google searches have turned up seemingly similar problems who's fixes don't work in my case.

    Stebalien wrote:
    Anything in dmesg after updating? When you reboot, try replacing the quiet command line argument with verbose and see where systemd actually stops. Also, immediately after updating, try attaching strace to it (strace -p 1) and logging the output.
    Regardless, this really sounds like a bug.
    I couldn't find anything in dmesg. I grepped "systemd" and nothing strange showed up.
    When booting verbosely the system prints "Welcome to Arch Linux" then hangs.
    The newest installation media does the same thing so I'm going to have to find an older one to roll the package back. It doesn't hang on my laptop so it must be an issue with this netbook.
    I couldn't find anything about systemd having issues with the atom N2600 and it's not old hardware so I doubt they've just dropped support.

  • I have Mac OS X 10.4 - but Firefox 3.6.18; keep being harangued by your drop down window saying load Firefox 4 or 5; I do this including Adobe add-ons, but my Firefox edition does NOT upgrade. I am 65yrs, self-taught and stupid about computers.

    This happens from time to time and I do comply to update my system. I think there is an incompatibility. I cannot afford to update my Mac to a more modern version which is where I suspect the incompatibility may lay.
    I would not have known I needed to update Firefox without at least four occasions in which I have tried to upload Firefox 4 (no.4 I believe), at least four times because window was insistant, plus Adobe add-ons or flash player. Later I check and find what I have tried to do doesn't work or become more than what I already have.

  • Firefox sometimes freezes up for a few minutes and begins using 47% of cpu resources and sometimes also extra 100-200kb of memory

    since updating from 3.6.xx to firefox 5, 6 and now 7, firefox sometimes will freeze while loading a site and use 42-50% of cpu resource. it also sometimes doubles or trebles memory it uses at same time as freezing, and freezes for 2 or more minutes. when it comes back sometimes it will have failed to load a page and will display the url but a white screen. this can happen any site, but seems to occur more when on image sites. usually i have more than one ff window open, one of which is an iboard, and the freezing seems to occur more often when either posting, or when opening a subboard or more often a thread in tabs or new windows. problem seemed to be helped when i disabled a recently installed java plugin but didnt disappear, and it can still happen anytime with only one window/tab open. the only common thing seems to be the site is either refreshing, or loading.

  • HTTPService request takes 100% cpu

    Hi,
    I've developed a Flex app that displays an organization chart
    of employees in a company. As the user navigates around the tree,
    it requests data as needed from the server using an HTTPService
    object. I've noticed that when the application first starts up, it
    takes about 7 seconds for it to load the data. During this time, my
    CPU is pegged at 100%, which causes the browser to be completely
    unresponsive. This happens in both IE and Firefox. Subsequent
    requests to the server complete in well under a second (usually
    ~200ms), but still use substantial CPU power. The data being
    returned from the server is in JSON format, and usually consists of
    about 5 nested objects with ~10 string properties each (this seems
    like a pretty light load to me). I'm using the corelib JSON decoder
    library. There is nothing different about the requests being made
    except that when the app first starts up, it makes 2 requests
    simultaneously (both from the same HTTPService object but with
    different parameters on the request) -- could this be causing the
    massive slowdown? It seems like Flex does a busy-wait while the
    first request completes before beginning the second. Through
    trace() statements added to my code, I can see it make both web
    requests one immediately after the other, the first one returns in
    under a second, then it waits for a long time before the second one
    returns. Googling for this problem hasn't returned anyone else
    experiencing this problem. Any help improving the performance of my
    application would be greatly appreciated.

    An event structure is the best way.  The next best way is to simply put in a wait in the loop.

  • I get a dialog box with a copy of firefox is open and only one copy of firefox can be open at one time.

    I get a dialog box with the following: "a copy of firefox is open and only one copy of firefox can be opened at one time."
    I do not see where firefox is open.
    How do get back into firefox so that i can read the links that are in my emails?
    Thank you.

    Sometimes when FF is closing, not all of it shuts down properly.
    On Windows, start the '''Task Manager''' (Other systems may have
    different names and / or commands). Select '''Processes'''.
    Look down the list for Firefox. Right click and select '''End Task'''.
    If this problem keeps coming up, ask for more help.

  • V 6.0.1 is slow and i just got a Norton notification that it is using close to 100% of one of my CPUS - it's the only application open , only one tab!

    I recently upgraded my Firefox and it has been slowing down my laptop ever since - delayed reaction when I type, for example. I just started my laptop this evening, and opened one Firefox window. I then got a message from Norton (File Insight), saying that 100% of one CPU is being used. Can you confirm whether this is the updated version of Firefox causing this? Should I downgrade?

    I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
    I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
    I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
    In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
    If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

    in addition you might want to trace the session to find out what it is waiting for. In 10g you can use the DBMS_MONITOR package to enable the tracing, and then use the "tkprof" utility as outlined in the article to get the trace file generated analyzed.
    You can also use the V$SESSION view (BLOCKING_SESSION_STATUS, BLOCKING_SESSION, BLOCKING_INSTANCE) to find out if the session is blocked for any reason, although it shouldn't consume CPU in that case.

    Hello Chaitanya.
    This kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix your issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable them to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't work, proceed to the following point;
    #clean up your OS registry, using appropriate software. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

  • MobileDeviceHelper running @ 100% on one CPU Core

    Hi, anyone suggest anything to fix one of my CPU cores runs MobileDeviceHelper (32Bit) at 100% consistently after iTunes is started.
    The machine is a new build with Windows 8 64bit all updates and patches applied. All latest manufacturer chipset and other relevant drivers and every other part of the machine works perfectly. If I end the process, distnoted (32 bit) then replaces it and takes over with another core running at 100%. Ending that process and mobiledevicehelper comes back at one core 100% usage, then ending that and it behaves.
    I have tried restarting the machine, installing updates, disabling the task in task manager, resetting the network adapter (winsock reset) and disabling ApplePush, and itunes helper at startup but am out of ideas now! I haven't even sync'd my phone to it yet.
    Im fast thinking iTunes seems to be getting more buggy each release (I haven't been able to burn an audio cd on the new machine as it crashes while attempting to, but other software can burn the same playlist and file after dragging out of the iTunes playlist) yet iTunes on my Macbook runs fine!

    oh and its iTunes 12.1.1.4 64Bit with Windows 8.1 Pro 64Bit all latest updates.
    As a workaround I have found the two files, renamed them so iTunes cant call them and everything still works fine which begs the questions what are they doing that uses 100% of one CPU core! I haven't setup my iPhone as a remote, or my AppleTVs yet, hoping they don't rely on these services!
