FireFox starts, process shows in task manager, GUI doesn't appear.

Well I just installed windows 7 pro 64 bit. Installed firefox 3.6.13. Worked fine (Using my 8years old profile). Then in mean time SP1 finished installing. After reboot firefox doesn't work. Nor the profile manager (firefox -p) nor the safe mode (firefox -s) nor normal mode. All those make firefox process show up in task manager, but no GUI. Same goes for firefox 4 beta. All versions of 3.6.4 up (so all versions with plugin container) and 4 beta I can find and download behave the same. Even some 3.7 alpha 5 thingy. Only version that works without troubles is 3.5.x and 3.6 up to 3.6.3 I'm on atm. I totally don't get it why its happening. Same profile with 3.6.4+ and 4 beta works fine on my sis laptop on same windows, with same updates. Actually first time it happened was on 32bit version of windows 7 pro. Firefox 3.6.11 (there weren't any newer version out yet) just stopped to work with issues like above described after one of windows updates. Cant pin point which one now cuz it was months ago. My rig is E8200, 6GB DDR2 1066cl5 ram, Gigabyte Ep45-Ds3r, ati 4850. I cant point anything else than just some windows 7 pro update, hardware and plugin container incompatibility. 1 in a million chance that makes this happen and of course I'm the happy winner of firefox issues ^_^. For people asking to switch of plugins and testing other profile. If I downgrade to 3.5 or 3.6.3 change profile to naked new one, then upgrade to 3.6.4+ or 4 beta, and exactly same stuff happens: no GUI, firefox process in tasks with 10-20 threads, and 7-30MB loaded into memory (depending on version, mode used).

Well I write once again. This time I have solution to my problem. Its HDTunePro 4.5. I admit I do have an not so legit version, and it seems its loaded with some crap, or the HDTunePro itself is. Thing is, after reinstalling whole OS (Win 7 Pro 64bit). With everything: drivers, games, programs. Everything worked, ACDSee, FF4.0, and so on. Then after installing HDTune - magic: FF, ACDSee stopped to work the same way it was before. In a process of finding out what exactly is at fault here (cuz I did install few windows updates with HDTune) I found few things: First, installing that HDTune from its install file, makes FF, ACDSee not work (the loading issue with programs stuck in task manager). But whats funny HDTune itself have the same issue (15 day trial - doesnt boot up more than process in task manager). Patching it with that not so legit thingy makes HDTune work, but all other stuff not. So solution is simple, not using HDTune Pro, at least 4.5 non legit version (HAHA theres a lesson here to not pirate software). Or do a work around - make system restore point, install HDTune, patch it, change extension of exe file (so it will not be *.exe), restore OS to that restore point, change exe extension back to *.exe, done. After this HDTune and all other stuff works.

• Firefox opens according to my task manager, but will not appear on my desktop.

My windows XP computer refuses to show Firefox on my desktop. Task Manager shows firefox.exe active and using about 43 meg of memory. I have tried Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6.
Using XP sp3 on this computer. Have scanned using Avast AV and Malwarebytes. I have 4 gig of memory on this computer.
I do not receive any error messages.

Could be a problem with your Firewall. Eliminate all references to Firefox and Plug-in container. The Firewall should ask for permission and re-set if Firefox starts. Try disabling Firewall and Anti-virus briefly.
Try starting in Safe Mode - Hold Shift key down as you double click on your Firefox desktop icon> don't check anything on the page that opens>Continue. Actually this is probably the best place to start.
If Fx works in Safe Mode you probably have a problem with one of your extensions or a conflict. Remember that all sorts of things have been up-dated as well as Firefox.
Along the way make sure your Plug-ins(like Flash) are up-to-date.
Be suspicious of third-party toolbars and try disabling them.
This won't be the specific problem but if you get Firefox going you should try disabling Hardware Acceleration to see if it runs better - Options>Advanced>General>browsing>uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration . . . If it does run better you should update your graphics card.
This is the standard troubleshooting you may have to work through -

Another suggestion you may get, certainly when all else fails, is to download a new full Firefox installer to your desktop. Uninstall your old Firefox, don't delete your preferences etc; and then install your new Firefox.

• I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but the application window isnt visible even though there is a firefox.exe process running in task manager.

I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but it isnt working. I try to launch it and the application window does not show. When I look at the task manager and then look at the Applications tab, Firefox isnt listed. If I go to the Processes tab, there is a firefox.exe*32 process listed. Each time I double click the Firefox icon, a new firefox.exe process is spawned but there is never a visible instance of the Firefox application.
There are no errors in the application logs. I end up just having to kill the processes.
I tried launching in safe mode by holding down the shift button but the same thing happens.
Any suggestions on what to try? It has never worked since upgrading from version 8. I tried un-installing and re-installing

I went through everything mentioned in the link you posed and nothing detailed there resolved the problem.
The Profile folder didnt exist so I created it. Made sure the perms were good and that it was not read only.
There are no default folders appearing under the profile folder when I start Firefox.
I have Firefox installed to my E drive.
Nothing happens. The process appears in the task manager but no application shows up.
Cant start it in safe mode, cant run the profile manager.

• FireFox showing 126,000+ K in the Task manager, but doesn't appear

Hello, today I started FF. After about three minutes, it didn't appear so I double clicked its icon again. It still didn't show.
I then opened the Task manager, and FF was 126,000+ K. I had to use another browser. I attended a webinar online, and as soon as the webinar ended, FF worked just fine. What could have caused what I experienced? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*'''Windows:'''
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

• ITunes shows in Task Manager but doesn't run

I was having an issue where my iTunes would start and show as a process running in Windows Task Manager, however, the GUI interface would never show up. I could end the process, but restarting the application led me to the sam state I was in before; the process was there, but no iTunes.
I am running Windows XP Media Centre 2005 edition with rollup 2, 2Gb of RAM, AVG AntiVirus, all the latest MS patches and Windows Defender all up-to-date. Stopping all the anti virus and anti-malware programs didn't help. Reinstalling iTunes did nothing, and installing the stand-alone version of QuickTime did not work either.
I searched many an archived article to find the particular solution that worked for me, and I have linked to it below.

Hope this helps someone in the future. It was a very frustrating exercise, to say the least.

• Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing

Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing. Never see browser panel at all. Also tried to install Firefox 9.0, but the same result was observed.

Rather difficult to say what the problem may be at present but for general info please have a look at
* [[safe mode]]
*[[firefox will not start]]
*[[firefox hangs]]
Note sometimes you may have to wait a while for firefox to shutdown completly, and if it has hung then as explained in the above articles you may need to kill any firefox.exe process that is still running (and maybe plugincontainer.exe)
Try starting firefox in [[safe mode]] e.g. by holding down shift key
* do not make any changes in the first window, just click on continue
? Do you get as far as seeing the options window for safe mode ?
If firefox is crashing see [[firefox crashes]], this is easier to work through if you can get firefox to start without crashing on startup. Currently some firefox users are finding Firefox 10 crashes on startup, and a new version Firefox 10.0.1 is being released very soon to deal with this and another cause of hangs.
Not saying any of this applies to your case but recent issues include
* ask tool bar causing hangs if video is used none English versions [/forums/contributors/708073]
* possibly some crashes do not start the crash reporter and other issues [/forums/contributors/708122?page=2#post-45059]

• Firefox won't start properly. The process begins in task manager, but the program doesn't start.I have restarted the computor, and updated my plug-ins. Don't know what to do next. It will open in safe mode, but not regularly.

When we click on the icon to start firefox even though the process opens in task manager, the program screen doesn't open

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

• As soon as Firefox opens, it starts increasing memory usage until it maxes out, and it won't actually close unless I end the process in the task manager.

Even if I'm not doing anything, no matter how few tabs I have open, Firefox will slowly increase in memory (RAM) usage until it's using nearly 100% of my computer's RAM, and everything basically freezes. Even when I close the window, the process continues to run, and I have to end the process in the task manager in order to get it to stop using RAM. I've tried disabling all my add-ons, and that does not help.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

After altering the "Processes" list in Task manager, almost all of my programs show the iTunes icon, and when I click on, for example, Firefox, iTunes will load. Uninstalling iTunes restores the normal loading of other programs, but re-installation of iTunes makes the problem recur. Any answers?

First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:
File Association Fixes for Windows 7
Does that get your icons back to normal?

• Neither Firefox nor the profile manager will start. In my task manager, the process is using 50% of my cpu but does nothing. I love browsing with firefox, how can I fix this?

I've tried restarting my computer, the I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, then uninstalling, erasing all firefox files and folders, then restarting and reinstalling. I've also tried opening the profile manager to change my profile. After reinstalling a few times and trying to open the profile manager before launching firef0x, I got the firefox has crashed window and the process in the task manager is still using 50% of my cpu. The most recent expunge then re-download pops up a "file is corrupt" error and won't even install the program.

Kill those processes that you are seeing, including any plugincontainer.exe, only once firefox has stopped running should you try to update it.
Totally unexpected instances of firefox running may sometimes be the result of malware activity.

• Am told firefox is already running , but task manager doesn't show it

am told firefox is already running , but task manager doesn't show it. I installed Firefox 3.6.10 on a new computer (win 7 home premium), deleted the profile given and copied my old profile in its place (win vista premium). I get the above message and am told to close the existing process, or restart the system. Can't close and restarting doesn't help. Please solve this for me, i so don't want to use Internet Explorer

g'day people... a dude called "moopenguin32" showed me the way... alleluia
1. Copy your Firefox shortcut (what you click on to open Firefox) to the Desktop.
2. Right-click on it and click on Properties.
3. Go to the end of the text in the "Target" field. The end will say: firefox.exe"
4. Enter a space followed by: -profilemanager
5. The end result will look something like this: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
6. Click OK to save the settings.
7. Double-click on the shortcut you just changed.
8. Delete the profile listed. It shouldn't matter that you're deleting it because you're trying to restore a profile anyways. You should have the profile you're trying to restore saved elsewhere.
9. Close the profile manager.
10. Start Firefox using your regular shortcut. Firefox should open properly. Close Firefox.
11. Now to restore your profile, open the profile folder you have backed up and copy the contents of it rather than the actual folder.
12. Go to your existing Firefox profile and open it.
13. Delete the contents of the existing Firefox profile.
14. Paste the contents of the Firefox profile that you're trying to restore (the one you copied in step 11).
15. Open Firefox and everything should be there (including your extensions).

Firefox doesn't open, though it opens once in a while. It shows in task manager and takes up 50% CPU usage, and ending process and retrying doesn't work. Profile manager doesn't open either. There's no error message, and have restarted laptop (Windows XP) many times, but no results.
Help would be appreciated!

• Firefox won't open until Task Manager is opened, why?

Recently I have noticed a slight problem with my Firefox browser. Upon closing when I attempt to re open (shortcut: ctrl + alt + f), it just sits there. It doesn't even appear to be registering that its trying to open. If I try to open again it does nothing & will only fully open & show the running Firefox windows when I open Task Manager. It doesn't happen all the time although its been an off & on occurrence over the past few days now. Is this happening because of the shortcut key? Or is there another problem why it wont start until Task Manager is opened?
