Firefox starts up in different tab with a different website

Occasionally Firefox starts up in a tab and website that are different from the last time I closed it. For example, last night I closed it facing the second tab with a given website, and then today, when I started it up, I was on the fifth tab, with facebook's homepage on it. It doesn't happen everyday, it just comes and goes, it happens for 2/3/4 days straight each time with different tabs and different websites and now it's starting to get on my nerves. What could it be?

@cor-el: They're from older days. What was happening to my browser happened since Sunday, with yesterday and Monday being repeated. Today, for some reason it didn't happen.
@FredMcD: I use ad-block, but I'm running a Malware scan right now.

Can I open a tab with a different page (of my choice) than my homepage?

I dont think its possible but maybe someone can tell me Im wrong. I wanted to open a tab with a different page than I open a new Safari window. I would think this would be easy to do and I could just type in the URL I want, but Safari doesnt give me that option. If I go to Preferences/General to the open tab option , I only can do homepage/same page/book marks/ empty page/top sites. I wish Safari had the option for me to type in the URL I want - just like I can with a homepage.
So maybe someone wants to have the AppleStartPage as their homepage but wants their Gmail as their tab opening page. Or GoogleNews as the homepage and USAToday as the tab page....or iGoogle as the homepage and Apple Store as the tab page...Well you get the picture.
It seems like it would be such a simple t hing for Apple to do - a lot easier than creating Top Sites - but I dont see that option. I hope Apple will change that in a Safari Update. Why not give users more flexibility and choice in how they want to configure their computer experience?
If Im wrong, pls tell me how to set the tab for the URL that I want.

Can I open a tab with a different page than my homepage?

I wanted to find out if it's possible to open a tab with a different page than my homepage. It doesnt seem that I can do what I want because when I go to Safari Preferences/General, the only options for tab open is topsites/homepage/empty page/same page/bookmarks. I'm surprised it doesnt let you select your own choice of page - if that is different from your home page. It would seem t his would be so simple...Why cant I have a different webpage as my homepage when I open a new window and something else when I open a new tab. But apparently I cant.
Let me know if there's a way to do it.

Actually I did get it to work the way I wanted to; thanks. Its hard to explain but I had to set my homepage to what I wanted my tab to be , and then set my new window to the folder with just the one URL. So in this one example (although now I know I can customize it). I set my homepage to igoogle but then set my tab to open with my homepage (which really isnt my homepage) and a new window to open with a folder that just had "Google News" in it.
Seems confusing and a lot of steps to do something that could easily be accomplished by just letting the user type in the URL of what they wanted. Instead, I had to jump through hoops and basically set up a homepage that is not really a homepage because my new windows wont open with it as a homepage...so what makes it a homepage? If that logic makes sense. A homepage is not really a homepage then.
This is another example of where if Id ask Apple, theyd tell me it couldnt be done. Ive had the worst luck with Applecare and instore trainers. Most of the time when they tell me "I Dont know" or "This can't be done", I post something here and get the answers.

You can sync as many devices as you like to the same iTunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep it all straight by device, including separate backups.

When firefox starts, any previously saved tab loads...with dead links. I can't make a tab die and stay dead! It resurrects on firefox startup, like a ZOMBIE.

I made tabs long ago thinking that it would be easy to change them. Over time some of those links perished. But firefox won't allow me to kill a tab. Sure, I can close it as it is loading, but I have to do that every time at firefox startup.
I want to be able to add AND SUBTRACT tabs, AND MAKE THAT CHANGE STAY. But every time when firefox starts it tries to load tabs that have those dead links. I don't need school closing information from 2 years ago!!!!
That's what I get for treating tabs like bookmarks. Anyway, can you help me kill the zombies?

A few helpful hints:
1) Don't bump your post. Everyone here is a volunteer and if your answer is slow in coming it might mean the right person hasn't yet read the post, no one can figure it out, or the question is so vaguely stated no one knows what the problem is. I suspect the last possibility is the case here, which leads to
2) State your problem first, not what you did. When we know what the problem is then we can take in all the details. Speaking of details, if you don't know which details are important and which aren't, leave them out. We'll ask for the details we need.
If Snow Leopard can be installed on your computer you must have an Intel based Mac and having an Intel Mac means USB will boot your computer.
I suspect that your problem is software too but we won't know without a fresh install and I recommend that your erase the drive and start fresh. Install Snow Leopard, install your applications, then transfer your data. Since your problem, or at least part of it, appears to involve your personal account I'd recommend that you not transfer it via Migration Assistant. Kappy has written an excellent guide about how to manually transfer data. It was specifically written for migrating from a PPC to an Intel computer but the same idea applies here so the instructions are 100% valid. You'll find it here.

Every time Firefox opens, I get new tab, with my desired page as a tab that I have to click on to get to. How do I go back to how it was in previous versions?

After updating to the newest version of Firefox, when it opens I get two tabs, and the one that comes up on my screen is new tab, with my homepage on the other, which requires that I click on it to go there. Also when I click on a link the same thing happens, a new tab page comes up, with what I clicked on as another tab that I have to click on to get to. This is actually quite annoying and inconvenient. How do I go back to the way that it was, so that when I start Firefox it opens on my home page, and when a new page opens, I see the content of the link that I clicked on? IMO This new and improved is really new and made worse.

An extra extension might have snuck in. These can be bundled with other software you might have installed recently.
Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or if completely unwanted, remove.)
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that get rid of the extra tab?
Note: I suggest also visiting the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and clicking the "Installed on" column header. This should bring the most recent additions to the top and group them by install date so you can investigate how unexpected software might have been installed.

Firefox automatically opens a new tab with search results

When I visit a URL, Firefox loads that page and also opens a new tab with a URL based on some word in the original page. E.g., www.tripadvisor.com url opened in a new tab. Is this a feature I can turn off?
E.g., I searched for "shovel" in the location bar. A list of results was presented. The first one was as follows. When I clicked on that link, the Amazon.com page with a bunch of shovels opened, as well as another tab with the home page of Amazon.com.
May be this is a Google issue and not Firefox issue.

I have a new computer with Windows 8.1. I downloaded Firefox but every time I try to read my email or something, I get additional tabs opening with content I don't want. I have selected no pop ups, cleared the cookies, only accept cookies from sites I visit, uninstalled and re-installed Firefox and the problem is still here. It does not happen in Explorer, just in Firefox.

If this happens only you start Firefox, try check your home page settings:

If it happens when you start a new tab try check your new tab url:

i heard someone open up more than one home page on multiple tabs while starting mozilla-firefox.

that's right. just put a pipe between each url. it'll open each in a different tab.
here's a tip: make the first tab point to about:blank, to have all your fav sites open in the background in case you want to go somewhere else right when you open the browser.

Since yesterday clicking on a link in an email message firefox doesn't open a new tab with that particular website.

I am using Firefox 3.6.13 on a 2009 Mac Pro computer (OSX 10.6.6). Up until yesterday when I clicked on a link in an email message Firefox opened a new tab and switched to that particular website. Since yesterday Firefox doesn't do that. I have Firefox set up as my default browser. I tried to change my default browser to Safari, then everything worked fine. Clicking on a link in a message a new tab has opened in Safari with that particular website. My problem is, that I like Firefox a bit more than Safari and I'd like to know what to do to restore that functionality to Firefox.

It's a good idea to try disabling Flash completely and see whether the problem continues. If it does, then my guess is incorrect. To test that, open this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
Here you can locate Shockwave Flash and use the Disable button. Keep this tab open for easy access when doing your test.

Ive just installed firefox 5, and when i open a new tab, it open with a blank page. My previous version of firefox opened with my most visited pages as thumbnails. Can i revert to this setup, or can i set firefox 5 to open a new tab with a specified web page e.g google news...?

No this isnt the problem. I want it to open a new tab with Google Search page and not with the big showcase of all my other pages.
