Firefox stops responding for 15s when starting downloads.

Every time I start a new download, Firefox will stop responding for around 15 seconds. During this time, nothing happens, my CPU usage spikes, and many downloads will subsequently fail if they do not support a resume feature. This is extremely frustrating. I have tried reinstalling, disabling add-ons, and clearing my download history daily, all to no avail. I'm tempted to switch back to Firefox 3.x. I know this doesn't apply here, but Nightly does the same thing.
I've got a C2D @ 3.16, 8 GB DDR2 1066, and a WD VelociRaptor 300 GB HDD as my primary (where files are saved temporarily), so I know it's not the system that's struggling.

I managed to solve this problem as my computer has been giving me problems lately and completely froze on me the other day thanks to Game Booster Beta 3 and completely screwed with Windows 7 to the point I almost had to reinstall again, but I managed to fix all my problems and if you would just follow my link here over to my post on Seven Forums then it would be easier then explaining it again.

• Firefox stops responding for about 30 seconds after hitting Enter on any website's search bar, even the built in Google search or when signing into Facebook.

As the title says, I run Firefox Beta 6 and just reinstalled Windows 7 Professional on my system due to seriously messed up Windows update, and when I downloaded and installed Firefox, I noticed every time I searched using the Google search next to the URL bar, FF would freeze for about 30 seconds to a minute, with nothing running in the background and no other programs running. I also disabled all Add-Ons and it still continues to act up, so that leads me to believe it's a FF issue, but even on every other website when using the search bar as soon as I hit enter, it locks up and stops responding then goes back to normal about 30 secs later, or if I sign into Facebook it does the same, and even when I had the FF 5 Beta before I had to reinstall I never had a problem.

• Firefox stops responding after everytime when launched.

Every time I launch Firefox, after a while it stops responding and it does not give me a crash report. I have tried re-installing it but no luck. I used the same add-ons for almost a year without any problems, and I have not recently downloaded anything. This started happening a couple of days ago. I have tried running it in safe mode but it still stops responding a while after I open Firefox. I am having to use another browser which does not make me happy at all.
Thanks in advance, Mustafa.

That can be a problem with your AV software. Firefox let your default anti-virus program scan the file after the download has finished.

Every time I try to download anything firefox stops responding and will not do anything until I restart it. Can I revert back to a previous version, or is there a fix for it? When I restart firefox, then the download continues and all is well until I try to download something new (which I do quite often).

• Firefox stops responding and some times dose not start when clicked on alot!

fire fox 9 stops responding for long periods and some times dose not load when clicked on. Also please note fire fox refuses to load the comments section on Yahoo.com under the news tab. The little wheel on the bottom of the page just spins and spins and never loads this area of the page.
I think i know why but wonder since i have had issues with fire fox in the past with the whole not responding and load issues.

Firefox which stops responding after some time is a BIG problem. You're not the only one. The problem seems to be with sites which require Java. The problems I seem to have spotted is this : You visit a web site which needs Java so Java asks Firefox for the amount of memory needed and this is lent to JAVA. However, when you leave that web site, Java is naughty in that it doesn't give back the memory borrowd. Firefox then has to consume a lot of memory to the point that the whole computer system grinds to a halt as you have run out of memory.
Search in the forums for high memory or RAM and you will see many threads. In fact, when you first install Firefox it will ask if you want to send anonymous data about the memory usage!!

• When attempting to delete the complete "Browsing & Download History" Firefox stops responding.

Since I had not deleted my browsing history in a few months I attempted to do so today. Firefox stopped responding. After waiting around 10-15 minutes I ended the process and attempted to delete everything from "today" and it worked. I then, one by one, deleted everything for "all times" except "Browsing & Download History", and it all worked. Now all that is left is to delete this, but every time I try to delete it, and nothing else, Firefox stops responding.

How much history items do you have if the check that in the History Manager?
If there are too many then try to clear them month by month or in case you do not care to lose all history delete the places.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder (Firefox will rebuild the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup).
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

• My firefox stops responding and fades for about a half min almost every hour, OR MORE often

My firefox stops responding and fades for about a half min almost every hour, OR MORE often.
I am typing a message or information, the screen fades to about half bright. the curser freezes in place and no key responds.
The information bar at the top of the page says "firefox not responding" in about 30 seconds it restores and continues as tho nothing happens.

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.
Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!
I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"
After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!
After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)
For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.
Enjoy. Hope this helped

• Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!

As the title says, Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!
I just did a re-format of my system disk and I re-installed Vista 64-bit on it. I have obviously re-installed everything from Windows updates to chipset, graphics and sound drivers. I also pulled down the latest and greatest version of Firefox which at the time is 15.1. So installed that too.
Every now and then Firefox just stops responding for no apparent reason. It looks like it is processing the request (after clicking a link etc.) but it then it's just a silence... nothing happens!
It doesn't even say it can't load the page and Windows doesn't even say that it has stopped responding. Not even after I click like crazy on the Firefox interface like different buttons and tabs and on the web page... not even then does it say "not responding" in the title bar of the window, which is usually the case when you deal with programs that are not responding immediately (you get that dialog that asks you if you would like to close the program or search for solutions online). Just nothing!... it's only quite and does nothing....
At the same time, all other programs are working flawlessly, such as the Explorer (Windows Explorer), or even Internet Explorer. And Internet connection is not lost!
I have no add-ons or extensions installed whatsoever. I just installed Firefox! I haven't even had the time to install Java yet. All I have is Adobe Flash player. That's the only extra. Otherwise it's in its' original form, default settings, etc, etc, etc.
Why is it acting up like this?...
I'm surprised that there even is such a thing as Firefox 15. This one came at the end of August, correct?
I have been on Firefox 14.x something before I re-installed Vista. For a good reason so! This is why I hate the new update model of Firefox and I don't jump on the next train (version) unless it's safe and I'm having compatibility issues with the one I use at the moment. This is why my first step after installing Firefox always is to disable automatic updates! I hate it when the software vendors are pushing out their latest software versions forcefully.
Frankly, I think this new Firefox version of yours is crap. It's not properly tested and it doesn't belong in the official release channel. This is more like a nightly build or something. It probably has some memory leak, despite the promises made by Firefox engineers that it will not have memory leaks and that it would be the fastest version of Firefox ever. I don't really need a faster browsing, I need a stable browser for reliable browsing. The speed of this Firefox version is close to ZERO! When it's not responding at all...
I have been a fan of Firefox since 0.8. I will be probably ditching this latest version and going back to an older version like 13 or 14 that's more closer to the reality and not in this fantasy world of fastest, greatest, latest, version this, version that, latest features. I just want a browser that works man!... I'm getting tired of Firefox. I may even ditch it altogether in favor of.... I don't know.... Safari?... Chrome?.... I might even go back to Internet Explorer after like 12 years of absence.

please try to uninstall the adobe flash plugin from the windows control panel. afterwards manually delete any leftover files in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash and download & install the plugin again (uncheck the option to install the bundled security software): www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

• Firefox 4 appears to be causing my graphics card to stop responding for no reason, since upgrading to 4.0.

I'm not sure if its a common occurance for other users, but since the 'hardware accelerated support' with Firefox 4 release, firefox seems to regularly cause my graphics card (Nvidea GT320M) on my laptop to 'stop responding' for a few seconds every so often, usually when I have flash websites such as youtube open. It isn't a huge deal since it restarts working again after a few seconds of a black screen, but its annoying non-the-less.
An example of such: earlier today i started up firefox 4, and when it was loading the tabs, the screen turned black, and when the screen came back on, pop up in the windows task bar told me that the graphics card had stoped responding but successfully recovered. Not the first time, but becoming a more regular occurrence.

You seem to be running older versions of Flash and Java plugins. I'd recommend you update to the latest versions first of all to see whether the problem persists or not.
The easiest way to check is to go to the Plugins Check page.
If that fails to solve the problem, try running Firefox in Safe Mode. If it works correctly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

• Firefox stops responding after file download

After I download a file, Firefox stops responding and I have to wait for around 10 seconds before I can use it again.
This also happens when I'm using "Download them all"

• When i want to go another from a tab,it shows firefox not responding, for a while then opens that tab!this is embarrassing me a lot by taking so much time!!why

I have two inconviniences with fire fox..
1)when i want to go another from a tab,it shows firefox not responding, for a while then opens that tab!this is embarrassing me a lot by taking so much time!!why it happens?
2) every time when adobe flash player is updated, it shows flash player can't be installed and it crashes! it says 'disable real player' though i never installed real player!!
plz Let me know why it happens to me????

1. Update firefox to the latest version 2. and disable real player in menu->addons->plugins.
Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox 13 are most probably caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and/or a malfunctioning Real Player browser plugin.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:
Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems
Flash 11.3 crashes
Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox

Please tell us if this helped!
Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions.
If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.
To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

• Adobe Reader 11.0.09 stops responding for 30 seconds after start

When starting AR 11 (either via it's Icon or via a .pdf document), AR starts normally but after a few seconds the interface freezes and stops responding for around 30 seconds. Logging the start-up with Process Monitor gives the output below (actually two instances, only one is shown). When the second instance times out (I'm guessing that is what's going on), AR11 starts responding again.
The whole problem disappears if the plugin Weblink.api is removed, with the unfortunate side effect that the Tools pane on the right also disapperas (replaced with a spinning Icon but AR11 is otherwise responding well).
The server that AR11 is installed on does not have any Internet access whatsoever. My guess is that AR11 is looking for the host above for some reason and need to time out before it is available for use. This is of course an extremely poor design and we wish to resolve it somehow.. Ideas anyone?
/Patrik

Solution found. By enabling a lockdown feature, we prevented Adobe from trying to muck about getting online. Actually NSA provides recommendations on how to lock down Adobe Reader, google "NSA recommendations for configuring Adobe Reader XI in a Windows Environment". We only used:

hi there...
1) firefox has been giving me problems for several months where it just stops responding, meaning I click on one of the 5 tabs open then it gives me msg "firefox not responding", also happens when I am working with xsitepro website builder development software stops me from moving around the xsitepro program and firefox again says firefox not responding
Note: However, when firefox gives me "not responding msg" it responds after a few minutes and gives me access the tab i clicked on but then happens again when i try to click on another tab
2) went to a page that firefox listed plugins http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ and there are several plugins listed that I do not know what it means below the ones it says it is updated, those are listed as " unknown plugin and ?research "
Not sure what does this mean as far as those plugins that are listed unknown and research. Okay, that's a lot of information. I think the key part for support purposes is this:
TheDrive said
<blockquote>
Just try yourself. Setup new profile and work a few days or weeks on any theme(s). Do not close tabs (at least ones, which you wanna explore once more). If your PC has 2-4Gb of RAM you will notice FF stopped to save session info after you will have a 50-100 tabs opened (you'll see sessionstore.js or session-backups\*.js script files reached 15-20-30MB long and stopped to change and it's LastMod date/time(s) are frozen) ...<br><br>
... I've noticed FF started to hang more and more and checked previous.js, recovery.bak, recovery.js was last modified on Apr, 14 but today is Apr, 16! I've lost one more hour trying to save tabs, even installed Session Manager, promised session saving on user demand but after a half hour of action against hanging FF, plugin showed me that I have NO ONE tab to save. I've managed to copy a few URLs to the text file before FF have completely fallen.</blockquote>
You're not the first person to report that the sessionstore.js or recovery.js file stopped updating with new activity. However, it's rare enough that I can't recall whether we have gotten to the bottom of it in a previous thread. I'll see whether I can search it up.
Meanwhile, someone might be able to come up with a way to watch for problems and extract some debug information, but I'm not personally familiar with such tools.

• Firefox stops responding every time I make any kind of input. It then flashes and comes right back

Everytime I click on something or type something, Firefox will stop responding for a couple of seconds and then return. It's curious that it will stop responding as I am typing something in and the letters that I typed while it wasn't responding obviously didn't appear but when it came back on the letters were there. Also, when I first turn on the computer, I click on Firefox and it opens right away but closes as soon as I try to do anything. I open it a second time and it is fine until the most recent response problem. I opened the task manager and Firefox was listed at 65,000 in the process monitor. I feel like Firefox is running twice and it is suspiscious. I tried to open it and it said I had to close the one already running which there wasn't. Any ideas.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
