Firefox Sync - everything syncs except bookmarks

FF 5 and now 6. OS X. I have approximately 1,100 bookmarks.
Everything syncs except my bookmarks.
Toggled bookmarks on/off in FF sync prefs.
Reset sync 2 times for good measure.
Been working to clean up my bookmarks hoping to get the potentially malformed URI causing this (this seems to be the consensus from my searches as to why this is happening).
Enabled merge debug logging and see a repeating message there indicating a problem. Looked for solutions for this and found some discussion, but nothing has yet worked.
...default/weave/logs/verbose-log.txt

If I can avoid it, I'd rather not share my bookmarks for analysis. If a malformed URI is likely the culprit, is there a site/tool I can use to analyze them myself?
Thanks - Mike

Well what do you know. An hour or so after posing this question here for help, I was continuing to poke around and found this FF extension which identified a single malformed URI and allowed my bookmarks to sync!
Checkplaces by Andy Halford
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/checkplaces/
This tool will analyze your bookmarks (among lots of other things). It immediately told me which single bookmark was malformed. It let me delete it from it's report with ease. A subsequent FF sync run ran without a hitch.
Now off to donate to this fella. :)

  • Firefox Sync loses bookmarks and places them in wrong folders

One version before updating to the version 31.0 of the Firefox, I began using Firefox Sync. I use Firefox mainly on my desktop computer, which has Windows 8 as an operating system. Occasionally I use Windows XP on a laptop, which also has the latest Firefox installed.
If I add bunch of bookmarks while using just the Windows 8 machine, Firefox Sync won't lose any of the bookmarks, but if I use the other computer's Firefox for a few moments and while doing that add bunch of bookmarks, problems arise:
desktop browser either a) lose all of the bookmarks from folders, which I had added last, but folders themselves are still there (they are empty) or b) if the bookmarks don't totally vanish, they are magically moved to a wrong folder (source folders don't get deleted).
This happens while not touching the desktop browser at all. Sometimes bookmarks appear again like they were never really gone, but I'm not sure does this happen every time as in most cases nothing appears after 10 minutes of waiting.
From technical point of view it sounds like there could be either counting or folder-id related error, but who would code something so silly like getting the placement of a folder in a hierarchy by counting? If it is id-related.. well, that would be equally awful. Also, there should be something wrong with the syncing itself, but is it really normal that bookmarks totally vanish for some time, before (maybe) appearing again later?
Or then.. I have an unknown remote user, who manages my bookmarks, while I'm not watching..?

Seems like things tend to get worse seemingly automatically as my desktop browser constantly merges the latest bookmarks resulting to few empty folders and one with the latest bookmarks (e.g. after adding 3 new folders and putting few bookmarks to all of them) . This happens only in the root of a bookmark hierarchy and thus I can add any amount of folders and bookmarks to the existing subfolders without them getting messed up. Bookmarks residing out of any folder seem to stay intact. I haven't tested what happens if I add subfolders to folders I added last.
The messing up of bookmarks happens with a delay, so I can happily add lots of bookmarks for an hour or more without anything suspicious happening. I can even close the browser and reopen it. I'm not sure what the actual delay is. Maybe few hours, maybe more. No involvement of other devices required.
I've tried to reinstall the browser by uninstalling it first which included deleting of the "Firefox" directories from the following directories: "AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\" and "AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox"
That didn't help either. I guess I could try to use another Firefox account for syncing bookmarks, but I don't have very high hopes toward trying such.
Simplest reasons might sometimes be the right ones, so in this case I actually could have a remote user, who does some "evil tweaking" to my bookmarks. Or would somebody claim that after being few years in development the Firefox Sync still can not handle the most basic functionality (keeping bookmarks in folders) -- for some people? I read that there are others, who have had similar problems, but that doesn't rule out the possibility this is something else than just a technical glitch.

  • Firefox Sync transfers bookmarks to local files ("file:" scheme) (probably it shouldn't)

Firefox Sync transfers local files' links ("file:" URI scheme)

just an update... this is really starting to freak me out for sure. I've just had another InDesign file I created this morning disappear from my local folder on my mac. It actually is lost now as Time Machine doesn't have reference to it, so I have to recreate it again...
The only thing I can think of that seemed out of the ordinary is I got a 'Sync failed' message this morning and I noticed my synced fonts not working (only got 2 but I really needed them for an update to a project - so that gave me a scare as well). Anyway it seemed to get back on track but it was just after I created this file.
This is really making me think of ditching the file sync thing. Any response from someone in the know would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • Firefox Sync only Bookmarks when I chose all

    - I chose to Sync all (Bookmarks, History,Password etc)
    - After a while when I go to Option->Sync I can see only bookmark checked (ticked)
Does it mean FF would sync only bookmarks ?
How would I know what it is syncing !!!

''"There is no any other devices. Only my PC !!! "''
... so you are just syncing the setup of this PC with the server, but no other devices (at least not yet), correct?
What will be synced, is entirely in your hands. Check other boxes, like passwords, history etc (Tools > Options > Sync). Then these contents will be synchronized with the server as well - and with other devices, if you decide to do so later (and if you decide on any of the devices involved, to sync just passwords for instance, then only passwords will be kept synced).

  • I recently purchased a new computer and activated firefox sync and Bookmarks came across OK but without passwords. Went back to reload in event of error and user name and password that was accepted earlier now rejected.

As above sync worked but without passwords, all efforts to enter site to remedy were rejected and password reset refused. To my amazement when I came to file this question name and password was accepted.

this helped soo much thank you!

  • Why does the new firefox sync not sync my bookmarks on my Iphone? The history and tabs show up, but bookmarks do not.

Ever since I updated to the new Firefox sync my bookmarks have stopped showing up on my iphone Sync for Firefox. I even downloaded the Apollo browser, but bookmarks still are not showing. Can someone help?

Firefox 29 has a new version of Sync, so whatever you're using on the iPhone for Sync will need to be updated to be compatible with the new Sync.

  • Firefox sync killed my addons

I opened firefox on a computer that I haven't used it on for a while, and immediately went to settings, reset sync, and replace this computer's data with sync data. Now, I have come back to my normal computer, and most of my addons have been deleted??? I am sure that I checked the box I mentioned above.
Because of this, I would like a feature to be added to totally disable firefox sync except when I explicitly allow it, or the presence of things overriding them being absent - it is far easier to uninstall something again than to reinstall it and have to reconfigure settings (gestures addon).
Edit: By a stroke of luck, my settings were not deleted (phew) which may have something to do with the fact that they were not transferred when I set up FF on another computer for the first time. However, I would still prefer for them to not have been deleted.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end side of the Search Bar ("Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also delete the addons.sqlite file.

  • Does Firefox Sync have a maximum number of folders limit for bookmarks, all are syncing to my other computer/mobile except for the last 5 folders

Have 2 computers, 1 mobile device
    1. Main computer: Personal laptop
    2. Secondary computer: Work
    3. Mobile Device: Android Phone
The Main Computer always has ~5 folders containing bookmarks which never appear on 2 or 3. An example of one of these folders would be 'cooking' which contains a few recipes i use.

How long have you being using Firefox Sync? Perhaps is taking some time to sync those specific folders. My suggestion is to keep the 2 computers on for an hour if you haven't being using Firefox Sync for a long time to make sure that you give enough time to the system.
If that doesn't work I will suggest to open a bug. Follow the instructions in this link:
    https://philikon.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/how-to-file-a-good-sync-bug/
That will be helpful for you and for other users that may be hitting the same problem you have.

  • How do I merge Firefox on my mac and Firefox on my PC to just have one set of passwords, bookmarks etc. shared via Firefox Sync?

I have two versions of Firefox 4, one on my Macbook pro running OS X and one on bootcamp running Windows 7 professional. They both have different bookmarks, add ons and saved passwords. Is there any way, using firefox sync, that I can collaborate all of the information saved in both of my firefox programs into one profile, and then have them sync to eachother so that when I save a password on my mac, I can access it on windows, etc? I would like a solution which involves losing none of my data moving forward- I want to keep all of my add ons, passwords, and bookmarks from both programs.

'''This is the same code!''' The only difference is that I have a source pointing to an .mp4 movie '''first''' in my page. Firefox does not play the movie and does not find the Ogg movie after the .mp4 movie. Furthermore Firefox (with the Adobe Flash plugin)does not find the Flash movie after the Ogg. Microsoft's IE finds Flash, to the extent it does not understand the <video> tag. Google's Chrome finds the Ogg. Safari and IE 9 find the .mp4.
I '''must''' have the .mp4 movie first for the mobile browsers (possibly excepting Firefox Mobile, which does not run on iOS).
Can you please look at: http://www.readingsbykaren.com/new/
Or http://www.readingsbykaren.com/ after 10:35 AM Eastern Standard Time.
This is on the home page of the website and I would really like for this to work for Firefox users. In that ''it works for all other browsers tested,'' I am wondering if there is something specific that Firefox needs that makes it incompatible with everything else.

  • Firefox sync is not syncing my bookmarks across computers I have set up for firefox sync,

Firefox sync is not syncing my bookmarks across computers I have set up for firefox sync

Same problem here... First i had to update my firefox to the shittest new version which i hate... The more firefox desktop updates the worse it gets. I'm still using firefox 28 cause its the best version ever...
Anyways so i updated my fiefox to latest 32 something version and installed firefox beta on android. It syncs everything except passwords. And no, i do not use the master password its always disabled!
Can somebody tell me how to sync the passwords from firefox desktop to android on latest version and perhaps maybe on firefox 28 to if thats still possible?
I can only say that syncing doesn't work for me on the latest firefox 32 and android beta firefox!

  • My Firefox synced the "wrong way" and I need to recover my bookmarks.

On Wednesday I opened Firefox on my WORK computer (PC) after a long hiatus and it recommended I refresh Firefox since I hadn't used it in so long. It said it would preserve all my bookmarks, etc. Did so, everything was fine.
Yesterday I logged on to Firefox on my HOME computer (Mac) and then about a minute later my very detailed Bookmarks toolbar started to change and is missing tons of bookmarks and looks completely/different disorganized. I logged onto Firefox sync hoping it would look like my WORK computer again but it did not.
Today I'm back on my WORK computer. I logged into sync since I guess the refresh on Wednesday had logged me out. And now my WORK computer looks like the same bookmark mess as my HOME computer. I wanted it to sync the other way around - make my HOME computer look like my WORK computer!
How can I get my bookmarks back and make that happen?
    Thank you!

You can disconnect Sync and restore the bookmarks from a backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
*Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore

  • Firefox Sync not syncing everything

I have firefox sync running on two computers, one with windows 7, the other is a xubuntu. The xubuntu one has never synced properly.
The bookmarks seem to sync fine, but I also want the addons.
On a few occasions, I've said to wipe everything on the device and replace with sync data.
It gets history, and bookmarks, but not addons.
It sometimes gets some of the addons I've manually installed, but never all of them.
On the past few times, it's gotten none of the addons, but in the reset sync thing, it says I have six.(There are currently two, Ubunutu Firefox Modifications, and the Troubleshooter this thing had me install)
I have updated via apt-get, I'm pretty sure I'm on the most recent version.
Not sure what version the windows firefox is on, but I know it has updated recently.
So what can I do to figure out what is wrong here? I assume this is user error of some kind, but I can't figure out what.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.
You can find further information about uninstalling extensions in the following articles:

  • Firefox Sync Bookmarks not working!

On one of my computers, I cannot sync the bookmark data on firefox (4b10), it works fine with bookmarks unchecked and everything works on another computer with 4b10, but it only gets an Unknown Error on the first computer.

    Hi Hiro!
Have you tried to go through the process in [[Safe Mode]]? It's possible that one of your add-ons is interfering in how the buttons are working.
Let me know if that helps.

  • I cannot get Firefox to sync my bookmarks

I had to erase and reinstall OS X on my Mac. Then I downloaded the Firefox browser and logged in using the Firefox account I used prior to the erase/reinstall. But I cannot seem to sync and get my old bookmarks back. The sync buttom doesn't do anything except open up the "sync" tab.
I still have all my old Firefox bookmarks on my Android phone. So the bookmark information still exists. But can't get them back on my Mac browser

I have installed and signed in to sync on both PC and Android tablet. My history has been synced but bookmarks have not come across to the tablet, although the appropriate box is ticked on both.
I tried entering about:sync-progress on both machines. "Setup Complete" appears on the PC but on the tablet I am told that the address isn't valid.
The sync tab that opens up lists my "Firefox Account" with no option to manage or disconnect.
How can I get round this?

  • I added a new computer and Firefox Sync moved a large number of my bookmarks.

I installed Firefox (3.6.3) on a new computer and added Firefox Sync (1.6.3). It appeared to sync correctly, but now one entire folder of my bookmarks (from my bookmarks toolbar) is empty and all the contents were moved to Unsorted Bookmarks, which was already full of a large number of other bookmarks. I tried resetting the sync, both with a Merge and with an overwrite, but the results did not change, so it appears I will need to resort everything manually.
