Firefox sync is duplicating bookmarks

Firefox sync is duplicating bookmarks. Sync between two Win7 PCs.
There is no noted solution to this.

I'm having a similar issue - I'm going through a rather OCD period of re-organizing my bookmarks from delicious within Firefox, and I will edit may tags et al.
Then at random moments Sync will evidently decide it doesn't want to update the server with my most recent changes, but download the server copy back over them.
I'm see no particular rhyme or reason to it, but it's transforms what should be a rather boring task into a sisyphean labor.

  • Use Firefox Sync to store bookmarks in the cloud?

Can I setup Firefox Sync even if I only have one device? If so, can I use Firefox Sync to backup my bookmarks to the cloud (instead of using a third-party extension?) I'm guessing that Sync stores bookmarks in the cloud because how else would it be able to merge bookmarks with another device (e.g., a phone)?

Sync does indeed store the data you choose to Sync in the cloud.
Because you need to retain a lengthy unique code in order to recover that data from a different installation of Firefox, many users find it not to be a good method of backup because that Recovery Key was lost in a hard drive crash or reformat. Make sure you store the key in a safe location outside of your computer along with your username and password.
If you end up choosing to use a different cloud backup service such as Crashplan or Carbonite, you can point it to your bookmarkbackups folder so you have a number of files for potential recovery. To get the full path to that hidden folder, the easiest way is to access it from within Firefox.
You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Double-click bookmarkbackups. You should see numerous files that are date and time coded. You can click after the folder name in the address bar to select and copy the path. (This is based on Windows 7, but I assume Windows 8.1 is similar from the desktop side.)

  • Firefox Sync multiplied my bookmarks and I have all the bokkmarks several times

    Hello,
After setting up bookmark Sync all bookmarks became multiplied several times , so I have on the bookmark toolbar every bookmark hundred times and I am not able to delete them.

This might be due to using multiple sync services on your profile (Icloud and Firefox Sync) Please disable one of them for this not to happen again.
And in order to repair the damage if you do not have a back up from before this happened:

  • Firefox Sync restores old bookmarks

I have Firefox Sync set up on multiple computers. I start one of the computers pretty rarely, maybe once every 2-3 weeks, and that messes up Firefox Sync. Suddenly all my other computers get old stuff from my "seldom-online" computer.
Is this a bug? Is there any way around this? I really like Sync, but if there is no way around this I think I have to disable Sync on that other computer.

Does anyone else have this problem?

  • When using Firefox Sync, do the bookmarks need to be in the same order on each device?

I synced three devices. One has bookmarks primarily set up by my teenage son. After syncing, my laptop show his bookmarks first. Can bookmarks be rearranged on one device without rearranging both other devices?

They would need to be on the same wifi network.

  • Why does Firefox Sync say my recovery key has been changed when I do not have another device to change it?

I am trying to perform my first sync, but the progress bar on the tab that opens up does not move. I've left it overnight and still no change. When I click sync now, a message appears stating that I am using the Wrong Recovery Key. I've tried using the same key, and generating a new one several times with no success.

You can type '''about:sync-log''' in the location (address) bar to check the helpful messages. You can also try [https://account.services.mozilla.com/ deleting the current account] and start afresh.

  • How can I get Firefox to keep my bookmarks (or at least folders) sorted alphabetically?

In MSIE, a registry setting can ensure that bookmarks and folders always remain in alphabetical order. In Firefox, I have to repeatedly sort each of my bookmark folders independently to maintain order. The add-on, "SortPlaces", which was recommended in answer to similar questions, has been "removed by its author".
To add insult to injury, after getting up my courage to try out Firefox Sync after years of good results using XMarks, I found the order of my bookmarks completely bollixed on the two PCs which I attempted to sync using Firefox sync. The bookmark folders, which were previously in a single alphabetized list, are now split into two lists without any apparent rhyme or reason. I have not foun any way to combine them again, short of wiping them out completely and restoring them from XMarks.
    How can I:
    1. Repair the schism in my bookmark list?
    2. Ensure that my bookmarks remain alphabetized, without repeated manual intervention?

I had disabled Xmarks auto-synchronization when I turned on Firefox Sync, so I don't understand why they should interfere with each other. While seeking answers to these questions, I found other (more serious) horror stories about Firefox Sync Although Firefox Sync offers additional features, like synchronizing Add-ons and settings, I find Xmarks both faster and more flexible for my purposes. In particular, Xmarks bailed me out here by providing a whole history of bookmark archives, from which I was able to restore them.
Many thanks for the link to Auto-Sort Bookmarks! It looks like just what I need!

  • Unlink Firefox Sync Devices

Have re-install y desktop and forgot unlink Firefox Sync first, now I have 2 "Firefox at Home" entries in the device list. Is there any way to unlink the unused one?

    Hi cyborgcygnus,
In Sync Options, what is the selected option?
    <blockquote>
"you can choose how your data is synchronized when you create your Sync account and whenever you add a device. When you set up Firefox Sync, click the Sync Options button at the bottom-left corner of the setup window to select one of these options:
*Merge this computer's data with my Sync data (default; recommended)
*Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data
*Replace all other devices with this computer's data

Also when I synced by mobile and second VM to the sync profile, there where two folders: Desktop Bookmarks and Mobile Bookmarks. Is there a folder where the bookmarks from one device are there and the other are not?
Since the changes are not being shared, it is possible to try to pair the new device or the Ubuntu instance again and to start from the new device first. Did you already try this? [[Where can I find the code to add a device to Firefox Sync?]]

  • How do i get rid of duplicated bookmarks after sync

after reset sync, i ow have duplicated bookmarks on my pc and i keep getting error messages that it can't sync to my iPhone.
How do i get rid of duplicates on my PC?
No articles on this subject help or have answers that helped!!!!

I had to go through and delete duplicated bookmarks. After syncing up computers, turn only one on, one with duplicates. Organize, remove, relabel the bookmarks. Open tools(XP) or Firefox upper left(win7) options,Sync, manage account, reset sync, replace all other devices with this computer's data.
    Seemed to work for me.
Sync instructions could be a lot clearer about this.
I am not clear how syncing works when 2 computers are on all the time.

  • How to stop Sync from duplicating my Bookmarks

When I open FF on either my Mac or PC, I find duplicate bookmarks. When I delete the dups, they appear the next day. This has happened now for the past week and I am tired of having to delete them each day!!
What is going on and how do I fix this?

I was having this problem. After almost pulling all my hair out trying to figure out why my bookmarks keep duplicating, even after I deleted my Firefox installation, deleted my Sync account, and created a fresh installation and fresh sync account, and I still watched as my bookmarks kept duplicating even after they were totally deleted. I then disabled my WiFi to see if I could isolate the problem, and I was still watching my bookmarks duplicate in multiples of 20+ right before my eyes!!! Then, I knew the problem was much deeper than the bookmarks Syncing process. It turned out to be a conflict between Firefox Syncing bookmarks and Apple's iCloud bookmarks Add-on for Firefox. Once I removed Apple's iCloud Bookmarks Add-on, the duplicating stopped. I restored my bookmarks backup saved to my cloud account and everything is working perfect now. Thank goodness!

  • How Firefox Sync is synchronizing my bookmarks in my four computers?

I'm running Firefox 4 beta 4 on four computers (a desktop, 2 laptops, and a netbook). I knew that when enabled Firefox Sync, I would need to "weed out" duplicate entries in my bookmarks. I enable Sync on each of the four computers (one at a time). Eventually, I sat down at one of my computers and "cleaned up" my bookmarks. I thought that would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, every time I start Firefox on a different computer, there are duplicate bookmarks and bookmarks out of order.
    What am I doing wrong?

What I do in this case is:
Suppose you have 4 computers ok (a notebook, and computers One, Two and Three). Than you travel for a month, using only your notebook. You got your notebook a lot of new bookmarks and passwords. It is too much different from the other 3 computers, then this (I guess) is the cause of firefox-sync (fc) confusion.
When you get home and turn on computer One, hoping sync will do the job, you get a lot of duplicates.
Now, to make it worst, the server also update itself to the duplicated set.
If you don't notice and turn on also computer Two and Three, you have all of them messed up. Your only hope is your local database stored in your notebook. If you lost this also, you must clean it manually.
But if you was clever enogh to stop the bleeding before the notebook (and hopefully before computer Two and Three also, so you just need to correct computer One), all you need to do is:
Step One: The Upload. Correcting the server data!
Using the computer you know is up to date, i.e., the notebook.
1- Turn on your notebook. Wait till the boot and all that little icons are completely loaded, so you have a fast computer to act.
2- Click on the Firefox icon.
3- BEFORE the sync start taking action to mess up also your notebook, go fast to: (Do it all at once, in a single breath! I recommend you practice in some other computer before you try for real)
menu Tools / Sync / Preferences / Manage account / Reset Sync /
-> Replace all other devices with this computer's data / next / Yes!
This will make the data on your notebook to be uploaded to the server, correcting it.
Now Step Two: The Download. Correcting the duplicated computer.
Again you need to be fast, before sync starts to mess up. But now, you will turn on the computer One, the one that has duplicated data.
Do exact the same steps but:
-> Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data
This will download the Sync Server data to your computer, without merging it with the local data. Merging is the problem that creates duplicated data.
Do the Step 2 in all duplicated computers you have. If you are not fast enough and sync merge again, you need to do step one again.
If you are slow in step one, and lose the original data, you need to clean manually.
I hope this helps a lots of people.
I also hope that the developers who read this do one of the two:
1- Tell me I'm doing a lot of work for there is another fast way to solve this problem, or
2- implement another fast way to solve this problem.
    Thanks!
    Beco

  • How can I copy my bookmarks without using Firefox Sync?

I am just not comfortable putting my personal data onto an online server, which is what I'm doing with Firefox Sync. Is there a way to copy my bookmarks onto a flash drive, like we used to be able to do?

    Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Export HTML... - to a USB stick <br />

  • I had saved all my bookmarks using firefox sync. Now i changed the OS and trying to get the bookmarks . how can i do this

i had change my operating system. so the bookmarks which i had in firefox i saved using firefox sync by creaating the account. Now i have changed my operating system but no idea how to get back those bookmarks on the same laptop. cani do that? is there any solution for this

    Add another computer
Do these steps on the computer you are trying to add to Firefox Sync.
At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button and select Set Up Sync. The Firefox Sync Setup window will open.
    Click I Have an Account.
Since you're not near the device with Sync already set up, click the I don't have the device with me link.
Sign in to your Sync account:
    Enter your account email address
    Enter your password
    Enter your Recovery Key
    Then click Next
You will see a Setup Complete screen. Click Finish to complete adding this device to your Sync account.

  • How do I merge Firefox on my mac and Firefox on my PC to just have one set of passwords, bookmarks etc. shared via Firefox Sync?

I have two versions of Firefox 4, one on my Macbook pro running OS X and one on bootcamp running Windows 7 professional. They both have different bookmarks, add ons and saved passwords. Is there any way, using firefox sync, that I can collaborate all of the information saved in both of my firefox programs into one profile, and then have them sync to eachother so that when I save a password on my mac, I can access it on windows, etc? I would like a solution which involves losing none of my data moving forward- I want to keep all of my add ons, passwords, and bookmarks from both programs.

'''This is the same code!''' The only difference is that I have a source pointing to an .mp4 movie '''first''' in my page. Firefox does not play the movie and does not find the Ogg movie after the .mp4 movie. Furthermore Firefox (with the Adobe Flash plugin)does not find the Flash movie after the Ogg. Microsoft's IE finds Flash, to the extent it does not understand the <video> tag. Google's Chrome finds the Ogg. Safari and IE 9 find the .mp4.
I '''must''' have the .mp4 movie first for the mobile browsers (possibly excepting Firefox Mobile, which does not run on iOS).
Can you please look at: http://www.readingsbykaren.com/new/
Or http://www.readingsbykaren.com/ after 10:35 AM Eastern Standard Time.
This is on the home page of the website and I would really like for this to work for Firefox users. In that ''it works for all other browsers tested,'' I am wondering if there is something specific that Firefox needs that makes it incompatible with everything else.

  • Firefox Sync doesn't sync bookmarks between smartphone and tablet.Works fine between desktop and mobiles.

I have a desktop, smartphone and tablet. They all have the latest FX35.They are all signed in and connected to Sync.Sync is the latest version and it works with email and password, instead of pins.On all devices, Sync is configured to sync all items(bookmarks, tabs etc).
When I enabled Sync on smartphone and tablet, they got my desktop's bookmarks without a problem. They appear in a folder named desktop bookmarks. All the changes reflect properly between smartphone-desktop and tablet-desktop, but, the bookmarks do not sync between smartphone-tablet.
When I open a tab on the smartphone, after a while it appear on tablet's Synced Tabs page.Vice verse is true also.So at least some syncing exists between smartphone-tablet.
Is it possible to create a bookmark on smartphone and have it appear on the tablet and vice verse, just like the synced tabs work ? I tried deleting the sync account and creating a new one, but I still don't see my smartphone's bookmarks on the tablet.
It would be even better if there was an option to choose which device can override another device's bookmarks.I don't really need desktop bookmarks on smartphone, but I'm too scared to delete them.I'm afraid it will also delete them from desktop... ?
    Thanks.

    HI GeorgePeterson:
So "new" aka "Firefox Accounts based sync" syncs desktop<->tablet and desktop<->phone but not phone<->tablet. Hmmm I actually have tested this S5<->Nexus 5<->desktop (Mac) and it worked.
    soooo the big question :-)
    # What desktop OS version (e.g. Mac OS X 10.10, 10.8, Windows (Windows 7, 8), Ubutuntu crafty codger ), what tablet and OS version(e.g. Nexus 7 2013, Android 5 Lollipop), what phone (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.2)
    I will re-test too!
    Cheers!
