Firefox takes a far longer time than IE to access the internet.

When I attempt to access the internet using Firefox, it sometimes takes several minutes to load. Sometimes I have to make two or three attempts before I actually gain access. After that all three accesses will appear. Internet Explorer loads right away, but is much slower in use than Firefox.

The problem appears to be caused by having the Cool Iris add-on attached to Firefox. I have removed Cool Iris and the problem has gone! I also note that there is now a 'fix' to the Cool iris add-on available for this specific problem

  • I cannot receive email properly now. When I open mail, it says that is downloading about 1,700 emails. At the very end, it gives me my newest ones. But this takes a long time. I've contacted the Internet service provider and verified all the right setting

I cannot receive email properly on either my IPad or my IPhone. I have had them for over a year and they have always worked fine. Until three days ago, when they both started acting up. On the IPad, when I open mail, it says it is downloading about 1,700 emails. At the very end, which takes quite a while to get to, I finally get the most recent ones. The IPad is sending emails just fine.
On my IPhone, when I open mail, it says it is downloading 100 emails, but it doesn't do that. And it gives me no new emails at all. The IPhone is sending email just fine.
I have already deleted the email accounts on both devices and reinstalled them. I've contacted the Internet service provider and verified all the right settings. The Outlook email on my desktop is working perfectly.

WMV is a heavily-compressed format/CODEC, and the processing time will depend on several factors:
Your CPU, which is not that powerful in your case
Your I/O sub-system, which is likely a single HDD on your laptop
The source footage. What is your source footage?
Any Effects added to that footage. Do you have any Effects?
Each of those will have an impact on the time required.
The trial has only one main limitation - the watermark. Now, there are some components, that have to be activated, but are not with the trial, but they would be evident with Import of your source footage, if it's an issue.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Hard drive chatters for a long time whenever I go on the Internet

For some reason, whenever I click on a new website, the hard drive on my iMac starts chattering (accessing) for about 30 seconds.  Also, at the beginning of every on-line session, it chatters for about a minute.  Also it will not do anything until the LaCie backup drive cranks up and gets accessed, which is about five seconds, usually.
The performance is fairly good, it at least works after a few seconds.  However, there are times when I wonder if it has been turned into some sort of robot spam machine or something.
Does anyone have any idea of what might be going on?  Is there a utility that will give me a rundown of exactly what is being accessed on the hard drives, and why, in real-time?  It's a 27" quad-core i5 from about 2010, and I recently upgraded it to 10.9.4 Mavricks (will do the OS update as soon as I go off-line).  Many thanks for all info and help.

ESET will convey no benefit and your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed. There is no product in existence that can prevent you from willfully installing a Trojan.
Although I try to be very careful, I got a very scary pop-up that indicated that someone had tried to encrypt my files.  My browser was locked up as well, and I couldn't even shut down the computer.
Next time that occurs, describe what you see or post a screenshot. If you cannot capture a screenshot take a photograph and upload it to this site using the "camera" icon.
From what you describe it was a lame attempt at defrauding you into paying a ransom to unlock your Mac. This is very common scam and yet another threat from which ESET cannot protect you.
"News" websites contain some of the worst garbage on the Internet, and that doesn't include the typically harmful junk advertisements they host.
My question, is there any anti-malware software that you might recommend?
You wrote that you try to be very careful with your Mac and what you do with it, which is the only reliable strategy. Third party products are an ineffective defense to protect you from the scum of the Earth or the "news" websites on which they appear. If visiting a particular site causes your Mac to perform poorly, they don't deserve your business. Shun them. Uninstall ESET first because it may be the problem's direct cause.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to software aggregator hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, and others whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Firefox takes a very long time to open and cannot connect to any website

After updating to Firefox 3.6 and attempting to follow the link to update Flash player (the link was broken), Firefox began to work VERY slowly. I closed the browser and, when I tried to open it again, it took in excess of 30 minutes to open, which it finally did. However, while it was initially able to open some websites (google.com), it reached the point of being unable to open anything at all.

You could try to disable this feature for now by toggling this pref on the <b>about:config</b> page:
    *devtools.debugger.source-maps-enabled = false

  • I'm using Windows XP. I'm on cable high-speed internet. Firefox takes a really long time to load, and says "not responding" for a time before it finally loads, Any suggestions?

If I use Internet Explorer, it loads almost immediately.

Here is the fix, the problem is you dont have to setup memory at 30 but 48,

  • Updated to iTunes 12.1, now iTunes crashes every time it attempts to access the internet through our internal proxy - cannot access store!

    Hi,
Does anybody have any experience of using iTunes with a web filtering proxy? My home is using the Sophos UTM home edition to provide edge antivirus and content filtering. More information available here: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-utm-home-edition.aspx
The proxy settings for the computer is set to use an automatic configuration script "WPAD" and the settings are locked by group policy and cannot be disabled or changed.
Now here's the problem, when launching iTunes, the iTunes prompts me to enter login details for the HTTPS proxy. That's all well and good, so I enter the login details and hit okay. But when I go to the store tab, iTunes crashes with javascriptcore.dll. This makes sense because a WPAD proxy configuration file is pretty much JavaScript code. But this should not happen, as now I cannot access the iTunes store.
Prior to iTunes 12.1, iTunes would sometimes freeze when attempting to access the store but it would eventually work.
The proxy logs are not showing that any iTunes requests were blocked, dropped or otherwise rejected.
Does anybody have any suggestions to get this to work again or at least work around the issue?
NOTE: Disabling the proxy is not an option because the proxy settings on the Windows computers are locked through group policy. I can however, edit the WPAD proxy configuration file and add exceptions to the proxy but I don't know where to start!
I will also post this on the Sophos UTM support forums.
    Thanks in advance.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

  • Building a .rtexe Takes an Unreasonable Long Time

Hi all, I have found that building .rtexe's for a mid-sized LVOOP application takes an unreasonably long time.
In some cases the wait is in excess of ~3h before the compile completes. Debugging any deployment issues on .rtexes then quickly becomes intractable, tedious and costly.
    The class hierarchy below:
    Any takes on the issue?

We do actually like helping but if you want to play the game of looking for problems, than you're going to be running low on helpers I'm afraid.
I was referring to your question whether what you provided a few posts earlier is enough when it should be rather clear that it cannot be enough to help solving your problem.
But hey, it's your problem and not mine so why should I bother?  Your contributions ont he forum int he last time have been rather neagtive int one and since we're volunteers here it doesn'0t exactly make me want to spend my own time in helping you.  Sorry, that's just the way the world is.

Every time I open Firefox it tries to install the same updates (that I don't want) and the Firefox 3.6 "Choose Your Persona" etc. tab opens along with my home page tab. It takes a really long time to get onto Firefox because of these problems.

Well, this worked on my desktop! But my problem is on my laptop. :-) I'm running XP, but there was no "Username" under Documents and Settings under the C drive. I did a search for those file names and it wasn't there. I found Mozilla Firefox folder under: C\Documents and Settings\ All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Mozilla Firefox. There are 2 - 1 is Mozilla Firefox (shortcut) and the other is Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). I did a Mozilla Firefox search and this is all that showed up.
When I click on the shortcut link (the 1st one), it opens up 2 screens of Firefox. One is the "this is embarrassing" screen. The other is "Choose your Persona" screen. I closed it and reopened and it took me to my home page.

I have a keynote presentation that includes a significant amount of video.  When I edit the keynote slides (not the video slides) how can I save the changes without re-saving the videos (because that takes a VERY long time)?  I edit the presentation depending on the audience to which I am presenting.

If you add a new  slide with just a text box (therefore a very small amount of data),  to an existing presentation then save,  Keynote will only save the new content to the file,  it wont save  pre-existing content as its already included in the file.
The time  taken to "save" will be very much shorter than a "save as" when all of the existing content is saved again.
