Firefox takes forever to close

Firefox often takes forever to close. It doesn't hang or crash, because eventually it will close, but it may take 15 or 20 minutes. (At least it seems that way.) The problem seems more likely whenever:
- I've had Firefox open for a long time,
- I've opened a lot of tabs,
- I've viewed videos.
I'm suspicious that the plugin-container.exe might be involved in this.
Thanks!

Do either of you have the Zotero extension installed? If so, what happens if you use Tools->Add-ons to disable it? I'm seeing this behavior on a fleet of school computers and it goes away when I turn off Zotero.

  • Firefox takes forever to open/startup. How can I fix this?

I am running Windows XP. All updates are current. IE opens up fast, but Firefox takes forever. Also, it is using way too much memory. Please advise.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
    See:
    *https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firewalls
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

firefox is taking way too long to load pages. I have a very fast internet connection but firefox takes forever to load websites. At first it worked fine and very fast but now very slow??

    Hi there!
    do you test other browsers?
i suggest to make a clean install of newer version of Firefox like v8.0.

  • Firefox takes forever -- sometimes never gets -- to my website. Chrome and Konqueror get to it instantly. My webmaster/ISP has no idea why this is happening.

I'm using SuSE Linux 12.3 and Firefox v 29 for SuSE.
About 80+% of the time Firefox will take minutes to get to my personal website. Often it never gets to the site and Firefox just stops (the progress wheel in upper left corner stops turning).
I can get to my website almost instantly every time using Chromium or Konqueror, but not with Firefox.
Other websites are occasionally slow, but I understand that could be attributed to lots of people trying to access the site at the same time. But not in this case -- I'm the only person on the Internet trying to get to my site and Firefox just doesn't want to cooperate.
I have tried clearing the cache and browser history -- all the usual stuff -- but it has not fixed the problem. Interestingly, and sort of counter-intuitively, after clearing the above I will get to my website very quickly the first time I try Firefox. But within a few minutes it's back to the same problem.
I have spent considerable time trying to trouble shoot this with my webmaster who also hosts my website. He is very well versed in Linux and the Internet, but this has him stumped. Why just Firefox and why just my website?
Also, I **can** get to my website very quickly using my Android cell phone, but not on my desktop computer. With the computer it's like watching paint dry..... slow, slow, slow.....
    Any thoughts? Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Bosdad

  • Firefox takes forever to load pages or download from websites. Why?

For the past week or so Firefox has been taking forever to load webpages, load email and download games.
I have re-set Firefox on a few occasions with not much difference.
The only two things I have done to my computer (which is running Win8) was to update to FF28 and to update the driver for my computers processor and that is when it seems that the problems started.
I have very few add-ons.Mainly pop up blockers and a don't track me add on.
Any suggestions on what I can do to spped FF up?
    Thanks

Try to disable your Firefox and Antivirus and check it out.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Firefox takes a long time to close since a recent update and hogs memory.

Since one of the recent updates that started using plugin containers, Firefox takes a long time to close. If I try to go back it, it tells me it is still running. I liik in Task Manager and about seven plug-in container. exe's are running and I have turned off or disabled mostplugins and addons, even Quicktime. Firefox uses an obscene amount of RAM on my XP machine and has made it sluggish. I use XP SP3. This started after you added the plugin containers in one of the recent updates earlier in the year. For the features it offers me or doesn't offer me, rather, it uses way too much RAM and is too sluggish. And takes a very long time to close out when I close the browser. It uses about twice as much RAM as it used to.

Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • Firefox use to be real quick when I first went online, now it takes forever for my homepage to come up, what is going on?

Ever since this last update whenever I go online it takes forever for my homepage to come up. Is anyone else having the same trouble with Firefox? Use to I could click the icon and right there was the internet now I have to wait and wait and wait. I am about ready to leave Firefox. Another thing it does too, is if I go and look at a youtube video, then when I do open my homepage that youtube video becomes my homepage, instead of what my homepage should be. I am getting so so frustrated. Someone please give me some help on this.

    * The first time you start up any application after turning on your computer is called a cold start, which is why Firefox takes a while to load right away. (I've noticed that future versions of Firefox start up faster on a cold start then Firefox 5.0.1.) Also, a lower amount of RAM could be slowing its start-up down since Firefox is kind of memory hungry.
    * As for the second part of your question, press ctrl,Alt, and the delete keys on your keyboard. The Windows Task Manager should start. Go to the processes tab and look for 'firefox.exe'. Right click on the firefox.exe and click 'End Process'. Hit Yes and wait for a minute.
    * Then opening Firefox again.
    Hopefully this helped somewhat!

  • All CBS, Youtube & Xinmsn videos fail to play on Firefox 4.0 all day long. Once 12 am (Singapore Time), ALL videos start to play Perfectly. Even Headline News takes forever to download until midnight, such problem suddenly disappears. WHY?

'''My Fujitsu laptop is one-month old. Initially I use IE8 and had problem watching videos. Once, an Action Message appeared advising me my API Driver is not working and directed me to HP instead. Fujitsu advised me it's a malware and a scan of Malicious Software Removal Tool was executed, nothing was detected. Ive had Norton Internet Security on my laptop. I switched to Firefox 4.0. All videos - CBS, Youtube and Xinmsn videos fail to play during the day, between 1 pm till night (11 pm). The only time every of these videos start playing Perfectly is around Midnight 12 am. (Singapore Time). This happens every day and night. How is it that during the day and night, every site including Headline News takes forever to download (transferring data takes unusually long time) but around midnight, such problem instantly disappears (and I can download sites very fast)? Also, ALL videos malfunction all day long till night but miraculously return to perfect function around midnight. This is real weird. Can some kind soul help me with this please? ''"

i would suggest you backup and reformat the windows.
Previously i also encounter similar error you encountered found out is malware attack, some of the antivirus are not even able to detect them. There are alot of users posted online which you can google around.
i had tried remove the malware using those so-called malware removal but things gets worst. So finally i reformat the Windows and everything go back to normal.
Personal advice, don't click or install those unknown message prompted from website. No antivirus or malware protection software can prevent this if you are letting then to get in your system.
Cheers and hope i did help you in resolving your error.
