Firefox took more than 15 minutes to open a new window

Hi all,
I'm now with the last version of firefox 3.6 and it took more than 15 minutes to open a new window. But, i'm not having the problem to open a new tab. I don't know why?
I'm on window XP, antivirus: avast familly.
Thanks for your answer.

• Firefox shows wrong page when application opens a new window

Only fails since V4.0.0 installed.
pages that open a new window using window.open(url) sometimes produce a page from cache instead of the page to be loaded. This seems erratic. Often, failure starts after a popup window loads and is closed, then attempts to open a different popup will produce the first page contents (or the default home page) instead of the page requested. Seems as tho there is a bug in FF determination of whether to fetch page from cache or new. Tried setting '''browser.cache.check_doc_frequency''' to 1 and while that seemed to help, it did not resolve all the errant behavior.

To restore the original behavior, you could try removing the explicit site-specific permission by deleting the site from this dialog:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content > "Exceptions" button to the right of Block pop-up windows
Does that work?
Also, I don't recognize this part:
''At the bottom of the window would be the URL address(es) of the popup page(s), so that if I wanted to access a page, I could simply click on the address and a new tab would open with the new page.''
Oh, wait a minute, I just reviewed your "More system details" list again and it appears that you have a custom pop-up handler:
* Extension: Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon 0.7
* Modified setting: privacy.popups.showBrowserMessage: False
So if the above reset doesn't resolve it, you might need to review the add-on's settings in case it has its own list.

• After updating to automatic firefox 10.0 I cannot use open in new window. Why ?

Tried to "open link in new window" on several sites after automatically updating to 10.0 . Windows links will not open in new window.

You may need to delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing the latest Firefox.
In case you still have problems after installing then check your security software.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Firefox takes around 30 seconds to open a new window (not tab) when i click on the icon in my start menu or taskbar why?

When i click on the firefox icon in the menu it takes around 30 seconds to open firefox and i have no idea why.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Can you prevent Firefox from EVER opening a new window without approval?

Many websites open a new advertising window when you click ANYWHERE on the webpage. On occasion they are so ill-behaved that they effectively hijack your browser, not allowing you to close the window or navigate away, and rather than risk getting a virus I usually kill Firefox from the task manager... not exactly an ideal way to shut down!
Is there any way to get Firefox to ask my permission before opening a new window, or ideally let me add websites to a whitelist so they are allowed to open new windows, or less ideally let me add websites to a blacklist so they are NEVER allowed to open new windows?
I am well aware that this is "normal" behavior and unfortunately falls outside of the controls that prevent pop-ups, because in some cases you DO want to allow a website to open a new window, but in my experience this is the exception and not the rule so forcing me to approve the new window would be nice, but as I said being able to whitelist approved sites would be ideal.

Thanks, dmcritchie! On your advice I have been using ADP for a couple of weeks, and I think that took care of my problem!

• Is there a way to open a new window with one site when the home setting on Firefox has multiple websites?

While working in Firefox is there a way to open a new window with one site when the home setting on Firefox has multiple websites?

I guess I'm not explaining myself fully. I have a home page designation in firefox preferences that starts firefox up with 5 sites. that pretty fills up my screen with tabs.
At some point I want to initiate another WINDOW in firefox (NOT a tab). I would like to be able to open up a window that ONLY has ONE tab, or as if there were only one site designated as the home page. This gives me a workspace that has my most useful sites available in tabs in one window, and also another WINDOW that I can move around in and even create more tabs without messing up my primary set of TABS (in my primary window). I see how this might not be doable without doing what I do now, which is open up a new window, and then close tabs until the new window just has one tab for me to work from.

• Since upgrading to FF v4, every time I open a "new window", all other instances of FF windows open, how can I keep this from happening?

Since I started using FireFox version 4, every time I open a "new window", all other instances of FireFox windows open up. This is annoying as it often covers up instances I am currently using with instances that I don't wish to use right now. I can't seem to find a way to keep this behavior from occurring.

Try go to '''about:config''' search for '''browser.startup.homepage''' change its value to:
'''about:home''' - default page
'''about:blank''' - blank page
'''url''' - a page that you want

• I am unable to open a new window / open link in a new window

In the previous Firefox versions we are able to open a new window & open link in a new window. The feature is there when you "right click" on the tab or click on the "open a new window" but it simply not functioning

Link context method works for me, there have been many complaints that the first two items were switched, and that can be easily modified with the "'''Menu Editor'''" extension.
If it does not work for you an extension might be involved.
There is also the mouse shortcut '''Shift+click''' on the link. Called mouse shortcut because it involves the mouse.

• My speaker volume is on and when I open a new window, a voice telles me so! make it stop!

I installed firefox 9 and now when I open a new window and with the volume on, a voice tells me what I am doing! I want to turn it off!

You probably have the Mac VoiceOver feature turned on. If you turn off VoiceOver by going to the universal access pane of system preferences.

• Problem with closing other firefox windows when window in use has more than 1 tab open

If I have multiple firefox windows open, and the one that I am using has more than one tab open, when I try to close one of the windows that I am not using by hovering over the firefox icon on the taskbar, then clicking the cross on the other windows, a message appears asking me if I want to close a window with more than one tab open. This means that firefox is trying to close the window that I'm using, not the one I'm trying to close. Please note this only happens when I hover over the icon on the taskbar then click the cross for the window I want to close. If I open the window properly, then click the cross on the window itself, it works fine.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem, and if they do, then mozilla should probably fix it in their next update, it's getting really annoying now

I can't find a bug on file for this on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ (although there are many taskbar-related issues under review).
(1) Just to confirm, do you both have "Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar" turned off here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
(2) Have you tried disabling Firefox use of hardware graphics acceleration?
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If you restart Firefox, do you notice any changes?

• Cannot open firefox in more than one window

I cannot open Firefox in more than one window. I deleted and reinstalled the latest version but this did not help. I was able to open Firefox in multiple windows prior to installing an update of Avast. Don't think it should have an effect on Firefox.
Downloaded Seamonkey and have no problem with multiple windows.

Anyone?

• Open firefox with more than one tab?

Can I open firefox with more than one tab?

Several ways. Look at the tab line. do you see the '''+''' at the end? Also,
'''''Firefox > New Tab > New Tab'''''
or if you have the tool bar, '''''File > New Tab'''''.

When I have more than one tab open, if I click on a picture to view/enlarge, say eBay, and I click on the items photo to enlarge it, when the window opens to view the photo, Firefox crashes. I also notice while looking at a web page, the pinned tabs to the left of the bar are constantly reloading for some reason, The green circle starts going round and round for no reason even though the tab is not being viewed. Both problems seem to have started after the last software update.

• With more than one tab open in private browsing, how do I leave private browsing all at once?

Before the latest Firefox update I was able to close a private browsing session by selecting the STOP menu item and checking the appropriate selection in a pop up dialogue box. Now, when I have more than one tab open in private browsing, I can't end the session by selecting STOP. The dialogue box opens and offers a START option instead of a STOP option. The same is true using CONTROL+SHIFT+P. To work around the situation I need to close all but one tab and then stop the session. I want to go back to the way it was before the update and opt out of a private session entirely, regardless of how many windows or table are open, with the former two-step process.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

• How can I have more than one page open at a time?

I would like to have more than one page open at a time- not tabs, but whole pages. How can I do this? I want to be able to have the pages side by side, instead of having to switch back and forth.
