Firefox update failed, so I re-installed. Now firefox won't start up at all?

''locking as a duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/969557''
So I ran firefox, and it was updating. While updating, firefox crashed for no apparent reason so I had to close it. Afterwards, every time I tried to start up firefox, it gave me the update failed error, followed by a crash less than a second later. I followed some instructions, uninstalling and re-installing firefox (without removing personal data), but now firefox won't start up at all!
Now what?

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

• Trouble updating to 10.5.5 and now imac won't start!

Yesterday I updated my imac G5 to 10.5.5. I already updated my macbook and had no issues, so I thought this update would be just fine. I repaired disk permissions first, and then ran the update.
I left the computer to reboot and install the update, and came back to find an error message-- that the update failed.
I rebooted the computer and it wouldn't start. It gets stuck on the gray apple start-up screen-- the thing spins, and that's it. It was like that for 30 minutes so I just shut the computer down.
In my 15 years of owning macs this is the first time I've had an update fail-- so badly that I can't start the computer. Help!

A clone would make it simple, you can just re-clone back from the clone and have a working system again.
To eject the CD reboot the Mac and hold down the eject key as soon as you do. With any luck it will pop the CD out even if it doesn't finish booting.
If not, you Mac is old enough it might just have a little hole next to the CD player. If it does just stick a paper clip in there and you can pop it out. I don't know why Apple got rid of that, very useful.
If no hole you'll have to open up the Mac to manually eject the disk. I've never opened up an iMac so I don't know how it works on that Mac.
Otherwise you will have to get a firewire drive with a system on it or a firewire DVD player to boot from the Leopard install disk. Maybe you can borrow one.
You can also use another Mac, connect the two by firewire cable. Make sure your computer is off and the other is on then connect via firewire. Start yours up and hold down the t key so it won't boot but will start up in target mode. It should show up on the other computer as a hard drive on the desktop. Doesn't matter if yours won't boot with a system because you are bypassing the system and turning it into a standard hard drive temporarily.
Then you can eject the CD from the other computer, or even start up the other computer on the Leopard Install CD and reinstall the system on your computer. An Erase & Install is probably your best bet right now.

• Updated OS to 10.5.7, now computer won't start properly...

Updated to OS 10.5.7 three days ago. After installation, system prompted restart (as usual). I clicked "restart", system properly shut down, then began to restart, then was stuck in restart mode for 3 hours! Gray screen with apple icon appeared, along with circling lines indicating it was "thinking" (I guess), then finally it just shut off. Now, it won't restart at all, just goes to gray screen for a few minutes, then goes black. Tried restarting from the system disk (10.5) which came with the computer, but I then get an alert saying it can't restore software because it can't find 10.4 or newer on the system. It shows my computer, with 10.5.7 on the startup disk menu, but selecting it and restarting throws me back into the gray screen/shut down loop.

Try starting in a different account or Safe Mode. Other issues have been related to font problems. You can test for this if things work in Safe Mode. A different account will check if it is something specific to your account.

[Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5- Computer shuts down during Safe Boot|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24054]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
By the way, did you repair permissions with Disk Utility before and after doing hte update?

• Fonts install now MacBook won't start

Hi!
Just got a new macbook as a mini design machine and installed my font library on it using font book (some 1200 fonts or so). Now the poor thing won't start up. It goes through the motions, but gets to the last stages of startup - spotlight almost appears on the screen - and refuses to go any further.
Are these two things related, does anyone know? On previous machines, I've always used a font manager such as Suitcase and ignored font book, but didn't on this occasion. Should I have used a font manager this time too? Is that quantity of fonts causing the macbook to have memory paroxysms, or does font book only activate fonts on demand like other managers?
So far I have tried all recommended startup troubleshooters, even down to resetting factory settings and flushing the PRAM. I'm just stopping short of re-installng the OS in case anyone can shed any light on this.
Thanks in advance.
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks for the suggestion. Isn't it amazing that as you get wrapped up in OS progression, you can forget the old-school solutions! LOL.
Have tried this now and deinstalled all those fonts successfully. Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem so was forced into an erase-and-reinstall anyway. I guess it wasn't the fonts in the first place.
Thanks again though.

• I updated to 10.8.4 and now it won't start up after the restart it just spins around

I updated my imac to 10.8.4 and restarted it and now it spins on. The start up but wno't completely restart.

Give this a try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
After this is completed download and install 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).

installed 10.4.4 on my powermac and now my aperture crashes on load with the following, looks from the error message to be a font issue maybe? I have removed duplicate fonts from font book but doesn't seem to have done the job. any thoughts on where to look?

Illustrator opens fine, but Photoshop won't. HELP!!!!!!!

Thank you, Barbara. All fonts seemed fine, no empty or duplicates. When I went back to Elements and tried again, it did not crash! After months of not being able to use type tool,,, not sure why it worked, but it did. Thanks again! I appreciate the time you took to answer my question.

• I was today invited to upgrade my iTunes when I logged on. Update failed. Every time I now try to open iTunes I get error messages. Second message reads "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please re-install iTunes. Error 7. Windows error 126"

I was today invited to upgrade my iTunes when I logged on. Update failed. Every time I now try to open iTunes I get error messages. Second message reads "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please re-install iTunes. Error 7. Windows error 126". I now can't sync my iPhoneand I am worried that if I re-install I will lose all my contacts, calendar, notes, etc.

I too had this problems (Windows 8.1). A few weeks ago after the previous update before this version of itunes, I'd had a problem with the itunes store crashing and at that time I followed instructions to copy QTMovieWin.dll to the itunes folder, which fixed the store crashing.
Today I fixed the problem by:
Delete QTMovieWin.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Uninstall ALL Apple Software using Control Panel / Programs and Features. I uninstalled:
iTunes
QuickTime
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Application Support
Apple Software Update
Bonjour
Delete the folders:
C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
Restart the computer
Reinstall QuickTime
Reinstall iTunes
Everything works GREAT now, including the iTunes store. You will not lose your media files, I got everything back, all my settings, playlists, etc.

• Ask your question.stalled 10.5 and update on my G4 PB and now Itunes won't open due to library created by nwer version, How do I get the old version back ? thankfully I don't have anything in it, having deleted everything for room for the new install.

I just installed 10.5 and .8 update, from 10.4xx, Original 10.5 Archived and installed, Now itunes won't, can't open due to "library created by a newer version error message,
How do I fix this ? uninstall ??? reinstall ?
I originally didn't have enough free space to intall the new OS so deleted everything/songs and some podcasts in itunes, backed up on another ipod.that hasn'r been updated so not missing anything, but now can't access\ another new(old) ipod and iphone (and not anytthing now) that wouldn't work on the old OS. due to not having the required itunes upgrade and not upgradeable on 10.4xx
Thanks in advance.

After reinstalling itunes like PowerBloodRespect said, go into itunes on your account and connect your ipod. On the ipod summary tab, uncheck the box to launch itunes when the ipod is connected.
You also might want to go into itunes preferences on both accounts.
On the Device tab, put a checkmark in the box to prevent ipods from syncing automatically.

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

• Recently installed Creative Suite 6 and am using Acrobat Pro. Suddenly it crashes and now it won't start. I installed the current update but still not. This happened before, in 2012, and was finally fixed. what do I do? Duncan

Hi all,
My recently installed (Windows 8.1) Acrobat Pro (part of CS6) suddenly stopped working - now it won't start.
This happened on Windows 7 in 2012 and was eventually fixed.
Any advice on what I should do? [I can't find where to post a question to the adobe help people]
- Duncan

Well, the computer stopped starting up at all. It could never find the operating system. I tried safe mode and virtually every other non-standard start-up option. I then did target disk mode with another MBP and got the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then tried using disk utility and it couldn't retrieve retrieve the data using restore (writing to an external drive). I suspect that this means the hard drive would need to be replaced. In your expert opinions, is this necessarily true? Could this still be just a software problem, or perhaps some other piece of hardware?
Part of the reason I ask is that this laptop is now nearly five years old. It's needed a new battery for two years. If it's a virtual certainty that the hard drive is toast, I don't want to pay $150 for someone to take it out and try to recover any remaining data from it, only to reveal that the data is indeed irretrievable (since the computer itself is probably only worth $300-400 at this point). The nearest Genius Bar is also more than 2 hours away. Am I going about this the right way by using disk utility, given that the hard drive won't mount to the desktop of the other computer? If the hard drive can't be reat in target disk mode, does that confirm that it is the hard drive?
Thanks
Oh also, it does still make the startup noise, even though I can't run the AHT since I can't get it to start up in safemode. I thought this mean that it passing various hardware tests. Does this not apply to the hard drive?

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

Is anyone else having this problem?
I tried to re-install and got the following message: iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 1114)

I went to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 and did a complete removal and reinstallation of iTunes. You MUST follow the directions here exactly...it's more than just iTunes that must be removed, and it MUST be done in the order in which the support article says. I followed the exact instructions, and iTunes is back on my machine (no more C runtime error) and you do NOT lose your music...it's all in my library, as it was before.
Good luck!
