Firefox updates wipe out pop up blocker exceptions

I am using Firefox 8. I have three pop up blocker exceptions that I need to download and print from a research site. When Firefox updates, the pop up blocker exceptions are wiped out and have to be reentered. (This does not happen with IE 8.) Is there a software fix or is this a development issue?

I should also add that site preferences is unchecked in clear recent history.

Pop Up blocker exceptions are not saved in the browser for use, the next time the PC reboots. How do you save these exceptions for long term use?

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-browsing-search-and-download-history
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
If you have software like Advanced SystemCare (Surfing Protection feature) that might reset some files to older versions to protect these files against changes then check the settings or uninstall this software.

  • Firefox update wiped out all my preferances!

I'm getting rather fed up with Mozilla Firefox. First of all the UPDATE nag cannot be disabled despite the fact that I chose the setting "Never check for updates." Firefox ignores that preference and reverts to either automatic, or "Check and let me choose." THAT started the whole mess. Listen please FIREFOX developers: I DO NOT want you to control my updates. Too many times in the past, you have more or less forced an update on me only to result in my having to reset EVERY preference and add-on I had previously installed. When I complained about this inability of Firefox to remember my update preferences, I was informed that I absolutely had to update to 20.0.1 because 19.0.1 had "security holes". You know what, at this point I DON'T CARE, especially if I have to go through all this crap simply to have a decent browser. Nonetheless I bit the bullet and updated. Right out of the gate, the WELCOME page hijacked Google as my homepage and didn't go away. I reset everything back to Google and then the browser opened Google alright, but was immediately re-directed to the damned WELCOME page...every time I started the browser. I tried everything I could but nothing worked. The next step was to RESET Firefox. Well, it reset. Boy did it reset. I am now faced with reinstalling EVERYTHING including ALL my add-ons, extensions...EVERYTHING. I am really annoyed at the arrogance of Mozilla, assuming that THEY know what's best for my machine and my preferences. I really hope you fix this Mozilla. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is getting weary of having to re-do everything each time an update comes along...which, BTW is altogether too frequent.

This problem has persisted for me for several months. My recollection is that there once were actually one or two additional unique posts on this update wipe out effect. This is my first time using the new Firefox update stub. Maybe this has something to do with it? In any case, despite configuring Firefox to NOT update me automatically AND not in the background, the update occurred oddly. As contributor tdp2101 has said, the effects can be inconsistent. In my case, a manual update over the last several months has occasionally been successful, that is, without the wipe out, complete or partial. Somewhere in my current process I a) told Firefox to not update, b) was presented with a page that my version was out of date. I do not remember the exact sequence. There finally came a moment, however, when the stub for v22 seemed to not execute two times in a row. Specifically, clicking on the downloaded stub icon resulted in nothing happening on screen, twice. System did not freeze. Just nothing seemed to happen. I immediately, cold booted my machine, opened my extant Firefox to download the stub yet again but never got the chance. Firefox autoupdated, wiped out ALL preferences, presented the Google home screen. I reset all my preferences including Never Update, Never Check, and, this time, Require me to okay cookies. Then I sought whatever updated solutions Mozilla might have offered. Finding none, I wrote this post. In the past, I have implemented all the Profile changes, duplications, substitutions, and edit solutions that I guess have disappeared or aged out of this support archive. Yet the problem continues. I am Win7 x64. Thanks for any help.

  • Please Help - LR update wipes out my catalog.

This seems an uncommon problem as I haven't found any other posts on it, but I'm having the issue that LR updates wipe out my catalog?! I've had LR4 for a couple years now. When the 4.4 update first came along awhile back, I accepted the download, and when I did so, to my horror my entire catalog was wiped out. I did a restore point (thus undoing the update) hoping that would restore the catalog, but it did not. I of course still had all of the files and side cars on my hard drive, but had to re-launch my most recent back up which had been a few weeks previous (I know, I know), and lost the history on the work I'd done on images after that.
Just now, when I launched LR, the update notice appeared. I did not accept the update as I felt is was a risk, and instead closed the box. Even so, my catalog was wiped out AGAIN.
My last back up was less than a week ago, but I'd done a lot of work on some images since then. While I know I can re-import the images themselves, I do not know if -- or HOW - I can re-import the side cars with the editing history (which I can see on my hard drive) back into Lightroom?!! Please help if you can. Thanks so much in advance.

Jim, appreciate the reply.  What I did after this happened was go to my most recent back up which was five days earlier, and I launched that. I then re-imported the files that had been imported post back up, some of which had been edited.  As I'd replied to dj paige, the edits I'd done post-back up were there on the re-imported images, however unfortunately the history on them has been wiped out - or at least it no longer shows up in the catalog. But If I'm understanding you, I should have been able to locate the catalog as it was just before the update? Because I did not see a catalog more recent than what was in the back up folder and dated Sept 1st.  Obviously I don't have a clear understanding of how this all works, so will have to do some studying up.
    Thanks again.

  • Pop-up blocking exception doesn't allow pop-up for banking site

I have entered an exception web address and selected 'allow', but the pop-up is still not allowed. Internet Explorer has no issue, so I figure it's not my virus protection.
I do not understand what Firefox is looking for.

The following article includes information about the pop-up blocker and some troubleshooting steps. Please read that article, I believe it will help you get this issue resolved.
    * [[Pop-up blocker]]

  • My pop-up blocker exceptions are not saved. Is this because of my use of private browsing?

    Self-explanatory

Private Browsing shouldn't have nay effect on exceptions and you should still be able to create new exceptions and keep existing exceptions.
They are however removed if you use Clear Recent History to clear the "Site Preferences" or the file permissions.sqlite is removed by cleanup software.
The file "permissions.sqlite" stores 'allow' and 'block' exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and extensions (software) installation.

  • Update wipes out ftp login info!

So I just updated Dreamweaver CS5 with the latest updates from Adobe and it wipes out all the ftp user info for each site.  What is up with that?!
You think they would have fixed this by now.
    Very disappointed.

    Hi bernwa,
Sorry for any frustration this may have caused.
Restarting your computer should restore them. See this document for more information:

  • Template Updates wipe out PHP code at top of file

    Hey everybody,
I'm helping my wife with a web site that needed PHP, and
since I know Dreamweaver I figured it couldn't be that hard to do.
And it's not - between the DW application development features and
a little hacking, it's been going fgreat.
But the site is based off of a .dwt template, and every time
she makes a change to the design it wipes out all the connection
code that dreamweaver writes at the top of the page... arrrgh! I
tried looking it up on the site, and tried adding a
codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" tag (I also tried "true") and that
    did not help.
I never had this problem with Cold Fusion before. There's
something in the livedocs about "dynamic templates" but that seems
to imply I'd have to make my own XML definition file for php
documents, which is pretty stupid, and makes me think it's not
    necessary.
Anyone ever come up against this before?

There's more to it than that, right? Let's see it all,
    please. The best
way would be to upload it and post a link....

  • Firefox Update for Mac pops up, I click OK, but NOTHING happens. The "connecting" bars starts, but goes on and on ad infinitum.

There's a message telling me a certain add-on (which I can't identify) "will be disabled" for the time being.
I hide the pop- up, but half an hour later, it's apparent no update has been received.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • Current firefox version wipes out internet conection and other programs as "incompatible" Any solution ??

Repeated efforts to downloaded latest version of firefox results in error message that various programs are incompatible with firefox, including roadrunner internet connection and most every Java subprogram.
Would like to switch to latest version of firfefox, but always have to restore computer to earlier 3.6 version.
    Any solution ??

Hi there rbowman, I can understand how concerning this is. It sounds like you set up Firefox on one or a couple of computers. It also sounds like you went with the regular version of Firefox. When you first set up Firefox it ask if you would like to pull settings, history, etcetera. I believe it does this after an update too. At lest in the regular one. So the employee must of said yes I want all my stuff from IE, and we know how that worked out. Firefox makes a version for the IT admin. It is called Firefox extended support. This lets you manage settings and all of that good stuff that an admin would have to do without going computer to computer. I would recommend you try this. Hope it goes better this time.

  • Pop up blocker exception list isn't saving

When I close firefox and open it again the allowed list is empty.
I've marked it as don't notify me when a site tries to redirect and I've turned off add-ons but still when I reopen firefox the list is empty.
I've tried adding to the list manually and then via the drop down allow this site that option that's at the top of the page that's still blocked.
I can find others with problems but they don't lose the list when firefox shuts down.
    Any ideas?
    THanks

Firefox stores those entries in a database file named permissions.sqlite, along with other site-specific settings, such as cookie permissions.
One possible reason to lose these settings is if Firefox is set to clear them at shutdown. You can check for this in the Options dialog on the Privacy panel:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
If the middle of the dialog says "Firefox will: Remember history" then this should not be an issue.
If it says "Firefox will: Never remember history", change it to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history". This should display numerous controls on the lower part of the panel, one of which is "Clear history when Firefox closes". If this is turned on, click the Settings button to the right of it and make sure that Site Preferences is '''not''' checked here.
This support article lists other reasons that Firefox settings might get lost between sessions: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Another common culprit is Advanced SystemCare, which like some other utility/security software can roll back unwanted browser settings changes -- but they don't know wanted from unwanted and may just roll them all back.

  • FYI The latest update wipe out my Windows user info resulting in a locked computer. had to restart in safe mode and restore my system. Basiclly it killed my whole computer. If I was not a programmer , fixing it would have been nearly impossible.

The new apple itunes update . corrupted or deleted my user profile in Windows 7 home premium.resulting in a locked computer with no way of getting into windows.

Never heard of that happening before and given the way the OS works that should not be possible. Sounds like something was awry with your computer before you started the process.
What program did you write to fix it and in what language? You might want to share this with Microsoft so they can look into it further.

  • Trying to do firefox updates as it pops up and it never seems to complete task?? why??

  • ITunes 7.4.1 update wipes out purchased and ripped music

Well, I decided to update to 7.4.1 from 7.4 this morning. The update went as expected, with no errors. Once I started iTunes again after the update, it started freezing while playing any song. It would continue to play the song until it finished, then it would just hang. The only way to quit was a Force Quit about 3-4 times on the process. So, I decided to reboot. The reboot hung. So, I powered off the machine after 3-4 minutes. I powered on the machine, ran Disk Utility to check the disk (OK), ran Repair Permissions to check the permissions (fixed Library sticky bit), and then started iTunes. iTunes now plays music OK, but all my music I added after 6/15/2007 is now missing! The files are still in the iTunes Library folders; however, they are missing from the Music Library and/or Purchased Library in iTunes.
Did the update screw up my iTunes xml library files? This is the first bug like this I've ever encountered with iTunes.

actually, scratch that - I fixed it.
    Apparently ZoneAlarmPro was running hidden.

  • The spry pop-up menu I built in Adobe Dreamweaver worked fine in my old Firefox, I updated Firefox today and the menu no longer works--despite disabling the pop-up blocker in Firefox preferences...what's the problem??? I need the menu to work!!!

I built a new pop-up menu for my website using Spry in Adobe Dreamweaver. Because of some differences in .HTML and .XHTML
it took me days to get it right. I tested every variation in Firefox until it worked perfectly. Today, I installed the newest version of Firefox and now the pop-up no longer works. I changed the preferences in Firefox to disable to pop-up blocker and it STILL DOESN'T WORK...although an older style of pop-up menu (menu machine) which is no longer supported by Adobe, DOES WORK.
    HELP!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT.

    pixlor:
OP is using CS3 and the menu blog is talking about the menus
    in earlier
versions of FW, so *most* of the points made in the blog
    don't apply.
That's not to say that using CS3 pop-up menus is a *good*
    thing....
