Firefox ver 28 or 29 slows after varying lengths of time on Windows 8.1 box.

Hardware - HP Laptop Envy
Windows 8.1
Firefox Version 29
Firefox slows down following launch. Slowdown occurs anywhere from 15 minutes to five hours after launch. Shutting Firefox down and restarting eliminates the slowdown issue temporarily but again the slowdown will recur in the 15 minute to five hour period. Same problem was occurring with FIrefox 28. Checking the Task Manager window FIrefox can be observed using 15 % to 25 % of CPU cycles. Shutting down Firefox and restarting it the task manager shows Firefox using only 0.5 to 5% of CPU resources. Over time this climbs until the slowdown becomes annoying. Have disabled antivirus, and removed Adobe Flash player previously. I find that Internet Explorer demonstrates the same behavior after a comparable time window.
I have tried several "FIXES" recommended on various websites but the slowdown issue persists. Suggestions, ideas, anything welcomed.

I experience the same problem in Chrome. I've seen it eat 80% of my CPU, though it normally sits around 45% when it occurs. It's why I started migrating to Firefox. Interestingly enough, I haven't been having that problem lately - it seems to come and go.
My initial thought would be that there's some common internet protocol or software causing this. Maybe it's security-related, a botnet blindly DoSing vulnerable browsers. The Java Development Toolkit Plugin says it's vulnerable and I suspect the underlying issues are common across browsers. I have no actual information, so take what I say with salt until someone smarter chimes in.

  • Firefox 19 suddenly became very slow after using it for about an hour.

I've been using firefox 19 since it came out and have experienced no problems. Now today after about an hour of using the browser it has become so slow to the point where it becomes unresponsive for about ten seconds when I try to switch to a different tab. What is strange is that when I run firefox in safe mode, its fine, but I haven't downloaded any addons for a few weeks. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Firefox seems to run much slower after the update. My computer is old. Can I go back to an older version?

Does the new firefox require a better computer than the old versions? My internet has seemed to slow down considerably after updating to firefox 7. Is the new version of firefox the problem, or is it something else wrong with my computer? If it is firefox, how do I go back to another version?

  • Firefox has becomes unresponsive and slow after I tried to install addons (not installed)?

I recently format my computer and reinstall the windows 7, since this was the only solution that I know to fix the problem with Firefox (I previously had this problem too). I download the latest version of firefox 33.0.2 and install it . This version was super fast. But becomes unresponsive and slow, when I tried to install the add-ons. I visited the official website of firefox and search for the addons, when I tried to install some addons, Firefox crashed. From then on, it has becomes quite slow and can't restore previous sessions. Even to type my email address, It takes more than 5 minutes and becomes unresponsive frequently (after I typed each letter).
I want to know whether this is due to some viruses, or this version of firefox is not "stable"

  • Firefox will be working perfectly, but after a period of time, and sometimes after a period of inactivity, the browser just hangs.

Mouse clicks to hyperlinks instigate an error noise, and to recover your internet session, all you can do is re-start the PC - but also re-setting the router seems to clear the problem.
Its not the individual PC, as my netbook which i connect through the same router, has the same problem - nor is it the wireless connections, as when the devices are physically connected, it still occurs!
I have tried upgrading to mozilla v4 beta, no change, and i now taken a retrogade step and gone back to 3.6.13 - no change.

Sorry, I couldn't find any relevant Bugs with regards to that issue.

  • USB 2.0 devices get slow after standby / hibernation when docked for Windows 7

    Hello,
I am the proud owner of a Lenovo ThinkPad T400. I am having difficulty with my usb 2.0 devices not hooking up to my computer after I resume my computer from hibernation or sleep modes. I tried searching the forum for someone who has had the problem and I seem to have found nothing, but if I missed something I am sorry for the inconvenience. I found this link (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73031) but this fix is for XP. Should this still work the same for 7? Is there any other fix that I do not know about?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    pjg,
Did you have the same problem with your T500? I did not ever to seem to have this problem until recently. I am trying to figure out if I am missing something inside windows that would detect all of the USB components plugged into it. I don't remember having this problem with Vista. I would not think that there should be much of a difference, with respect to this issue, from Vista to 7.
I bought my machine when Vista was available and I did not notice a long lag time for USB devices, so I upgraded to 7 and I just re-installed all of the software that Lenovo puts on their machines (the preloaded factory stuff) and there was no change. I am running out of ideas to try and fix this.

  • Norton anti-virus slows down the start up time in Windows Vista

    Hi,
please help, i am being driven to distraction by the slow start up time of my laptop.
I've only had it for a few weeks and don't use it for anything beyond producing word documents etc.
It has gradually been getting slower on startup and i suspect it has something to do with the Norton anti-virus software on it and the updates for norton that i have downloaded (thinking that this was the right thing to do).
Looking at the problems and solutions log on the computer the date that it really started to slow down coincides with downloading a norton update, which i have been unable to uninstall to check if this really is the problem.
Further i have tried doing a System Restore, my laptop was not able to complete.
I am stuck on the DOS screen for 10 mins with the message:
    PXE-E32 FTFP open timeout
I have no idea what this means but the Problems and Solutions log says something about a system hang?
I have looked on the web for other anti-virus software and they all seem to have one problem or another and slow computers down on startup.
Does anyone know of a solution or do i just have to make a cup of tea when i switch my computer on and lace it with vodka till it has booted up completely!
I am a novice when it comes to using computers so would welcome any non-technical advice.
    thanks
    laura

    Hi guys
I would like to add some words about my experience using the Symantec Norton Antivirus software.
I have used this software 3 year long. It was great because it supports one of the best virus filtering options BUT it really slow downs the operating system.
I didnt use it on with Vista preinstalled notebook but on Win XP and I have to say that the notebook boot process was halted for about 30sec-1min till the whole parts of Norton Antivirus software has started It was very annoying
However, I switched to AntiVir. This is software described by marina4000 and Im really happy because the boot performance increased.
So finally I would also recommend removing this Symantec Norton Antivirus software and to switch to the other free AntiVir software ;)
    Bye

  • Browser Load Slow after 10.4.6 upgrade

All my browsers - Safari, Camino, Firefox - load pages really, really slow after upgrading to 10.4.6. The browsers are all the latest versions. I've read it could have something to do with the recent Java update, but haven't found a good way to resolve the issue. My internet connection is fine.
    Any suggestions? Thanks. Terry.

I have 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 set in at least one of my locations. I havenn't noticed that much diff' personally. Many do gain from this inclusion. It's fairly well known by now.
I guess the main point would be that it is an ISP issue as opposed to a Safari problem.
Apple Forums are under supported and sometimes won't load. When I get puzzled I use http://www.dslreports.com/forum/macdsl as a Test. It is an interesting Apple oriented site and loads "instantaneously" for me.
    Good Luck, JP

  • Why is Firefox so slow after the upgrade to OS X Lion? Safari opens pages immediately, like Firefox on Windows, but on Lion it can easily take up to 30 seconds.

Running OS X Lion 10.7.1 Mac mini early 2009, 4GB RAM. No other problems except both Firefox and Chrome are incredibly slow opening web pages when compared to the same two browsers in Windows or to Safari in OS X.
This happens whether other applications are running or not. Internet speed has not changed (tested 6 Mbps), not using proxies, etc. Yes, I did test after Quitting all other apps. It makes no difference.

I run very few or no extensions with the exception of Java and Flash. I never, '''NEVER''' use stupid toolbars. The problem with FireFox on OS X Lion seems to be related to the OS. The speed of my Internet connection never changed and it continues to be fast for all of my computers, both Mac and Windoze 7.
If you change your default DNS on the Mac to something like the IP address of the Google DNS servers, FireFox and Chrome will run at normal speeds. If anyone needs help with this, please post another message and I will post instructions.

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.

Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I deleted a few of them and it really helped with system performance. Reading your reply confirms that what I did was the right thing; here is an updated log from EtreCheck:

I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.

  • Disk access extremely slow after 10.5.2 Update

I did the update to 10.5.2 today.
    1. I tried to update via Software Update. The update started but then stopped with an Error message (Contact Support) and the system freezed. There was just the spinning wheel on blue background for more than one hour. No more harddisk activity. I finally rebooted (hard way). After a reboot I had a somehow upgraded system. But many things did not work anymore (most applications crashed, mail could not access keychain items anymore, etcpp)
    2. Then I downloaded the complete Update package to do a manual update (happily firefox still worked). After a manual install it worked. It installed fine and rebooted. Now everything works as it should with the only problem that everything is extremly slow. Starting an application lasts about double the time as normal, loading files takes 3 to 4 times more time than with 10.5.1
To fix these issues I tried several things:
    - Fixed permissions
    - Cleared all cache files and forced system to rebuild them
    - Severall reboots
    - Waited until backup completed and Spotlight index was rebuilt
Bootup time is now fine (more or less). Just a little slower than 10.5.1. Application start is still slow but better. But the file access is still extremly slow. This can be observed very well in Parallels which still works fine, but needs 3 to 4 times longer to start (so do all applications within parallels). I checked CPU (Activity Monitor) but could not see anything special.
Any ideas what could be the reason for this behaviour and (more important) how to possibly fix this? I'm thinking about going back to 10.5.1 with time-machine and then try it again with the package install.
    Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Is it slow wireless LAN behavior affecting Time Machine? Check out the third page of this thread, specificallly the post by John Albergo about "delay_ack."
