Firefox will not launch consistently since it was upgraded to FF5

I've been using Firefox for a few years now and I preferred it to Internet Explorer because I found it to be so much easier to use. I updated it consistently and remained pleased with it until I was alerted to a new update and found that there were two to choose from. The one was a continuation of the version I currently had (I believe it was FF3) and the other was a "jump", so to speak, to FF5. Naturally, since the second seemed the more "updated" one, I chose it. About a month later, FF became rather temperamental; inconsistent and unreliable launching, slow or nonexistent navigation to web pages that previously had been almost instantaneous access, near constant messages that FF was unable to access the site(s) and even the Internet itself, and crashing. I hesitate to update it again for fear it will only compound the problem, however, if there is a patch recently developed or an updated version that addresses such issues I would like to be made aware of it.

From here it looks like you used Safari instead. Lots of choices that's what I like.
You did end Firefox and try to restart didn't you?
If you did then I would expect you have a problem with your Firewall, and would have had it before, does not affect IE, it does affect Firefox, I don't know about other browsers. See

  • Firefox will not launch, but shows in task manager, after updating graphics drivers to AMD's 13.1.

    Hi,
After updating to the AMD 13.1 drivers, on my 5770, Firefox will not launch; it does, however, show in the task manager. I should note that it will start in Windows safe mode; when I had it open in safe mode, I used that time to disable all plugins, add-ons, extensions, and created a new profile. This did not help. I also tried launching Firefox in to its safe mode, and had no luck with this either.
I experienced this problem once before, when trying to update to a previous version. I believe I was moving from 12.1 to 12.4, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Ultimately, my solution then was to retrograde back to my previous driver. The steps mentioned in the previous paragraph did not help at that time, not did a complete reinstall.
15 years of computer repair experience, and this has me baffled.
Thank you to anyone who might be able to help.
    Possibly relevant specs.
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    AMD Phenom II x4
    6BG Ram
AMD 5770 graphics, running Catalyst 13.1

By any chance, did you disable Firefox's use of hardware graphics acceleration? To avoid a round-trip through Windows Safe Mode, you could try adding these to your prefs.js file while Firefox is closed.
To quickly open the folder with the correct prefs.js file, you can use
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Because Firefox may overwrite change to this file at shutdown, you should edit it after closing Firefox and allowing a few moments for Firefox to finish updates to the files.
These are the preferences I think are most relevant:
    user_pref("gfx.content.azure.enabled", false);
    user_pref("gfx.direct2d.disabled", true);
    Does that make any difference?

  • Firefox will not launch

firefox will not launch after upgrading. Every time I try to launch I am advised to reboot to complete the upgrade.

I think you already known that latest firefox version 13.0.x don't work with xp sp1, needs sp2 and above.
Try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer Uninstall Firefox from your computer]
then Download the latest version(with your safari) from :
    http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
and Install the version that you have downloaded (13.0.1).
Do not select to remove your personal data, your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks or other personal data.

  • Firefox will not launch after latest OS X security update

Just installed latest Apple software update on Snow Leopard. Now, Firefox will not launch. Checked system logs and get this:
    11/21/10 10:24:20 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[155] ([0x0-0x6d06d].org.mozilla.firefox[802]) Exited with exit code: 1
The following may or may not be related. Before installing the update, I had lots of these messages in my logs:
11/21/10 7:27:17 PM firefox-bin[39594] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x1422680 of class __NSCFDate autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking

Sounds like you may have a check in the box for HTTP and/or HTTPS proxy servers, but you are not behind a proxy server. Safari and Software Update use the HTTP port, Mail doesn't, and Firefox ignores the Mac OS preferences and uses it's own proxy settings.
Go to System Preferences > Network > active connection > Proxies tab and if there are proxies checked, UNcheck them.
    Hope this helps...

  • I get a crash notice. Firefox will not launch at all -- it keeps giving crash notice. I also cannot generate a crash report. I have uninstalled and reinstalled -- same issue. It does not launch.

Firefox crashed this morning. It will not launch even after being uninstalled and reinstalled. All I can get is a crash box. It will not relaunch in any way

This sounds the same as my issue. I was browsing in Firefox v6.0 last night and all of a sudden it closed with no notice or error message. When I tried to open FF I received the messaga; We're Sorry - Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts." I does not restart. I have been using IE to browse for a solution and nothing works other than opening as administrator. Now this problem is only on one of my laptops and is fine on my desktop and other laptops so it appears to be something specific to my laptop which is running Window XP Home and Service Pack 3.
Some suggestions were to change the profile (did not work), end the firefox.exe process in task manager (not running in processes) and delete an xpicleanup.exe (not listed).
The only thing that works is to run as administrator but I have to do this everytime. Is ther a solution?

  • After updating firefox will not launch

Ever since version 8 became available whenever I update FF it will not launch. No error messages or anything, just no response at all from the button. I have cleared the cache and cookies, completely removed FF using the control panel - add remove programs, deleted the FF folder from C: program files and then emptied the trash. then downloaded a fresh copy of FF from www.mozilla.org. Again no response at all when attempting to launch. not even an error report. I am running Microsoft XP Pro 5.1.200 SP 3 Build 2600 on a Dell OptiPlex 745 processor x86 family 6 model 15 stepping 2 intel ~1794 mhz

What about the latest version of Firefox, Firefox 9? Does that work?
If it doesn't, the instructions here might be of help: [[Firefox will not start]]

  • Firefox will not display videos since Yosemite migration

    Good day!
I run an early 2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2,2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4g 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory, and an Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384 Mo. Firefox is 34.0.5.
Since I migrated to Yosemite (10.10.1), the browser I use (Firefox) will not display the videos, but plays the sound out of them...
I tried to clear the PRAM (NVRAM) with the Command (⌘), Option, P, and R, but it doesn't work. I even tried to shut down the graphic acceleration option in Firefox, to no avail...
What else should I do? Any solution out there?
Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you all!
    Martin

  • Firefox will not launch in any mode. I cannot open Profile manager to change to another profile. No change with delete and reload of program.

I've been using Firefox for years. Had this happen once before but was able to open the profile manager and change to a new profile. At this point I can't even do that. Suggestions??

[[Basic Troubleshooting]] has a "clean reinstall" section at the end that does not require you to open Firefox.
In any case, you should first take a look at the [[Firefox will not start]] article, which I mentioned in my first post. If that doesn't help, also check out http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up#Windows-specific_problems

  • Suddenly, Firefox will not launch. When I try with the Task Manager up, it never appears on the list of applications.

On a desktop PC running Windows XE, FF will not launch. Has been working very well since we installed FF two weeks ago and made it our default browser. IE launches normally allowing me to post this question. On my laptop, on the same wireless connection, FF works fine. I have rebooted several times. Everything seems normal except for FF. I have run PC Doctor and have fixed all problems that came up. McAfee finds no problems.

Update: After a very long time, perhaps 15 minutes or more, the FF screen comes up blank with the "loading..." message on the first tab. Also, because I tried several times to launch FF, more such screens came up with the same result. My home page never loads. If I stop page loading and try another web site I get the same result.

  • Firefox will not launch when I click the icon, it worked okay previously

A week ago firefox began taking a long time to launch sometimes requireing reclicking the icon.
Now it will not launch at all.
I get no error messages, nothing happens when I click the icon.
    HELP

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox will not start (crashes on opening) following upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10; crash report specifies IcedTeaPlugin.so

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) beta, Firefox will not open. A crash report is generated each time. Looking at all the crash reports, they specify the IcedTeaPlugin.so @0x7cec as the point where the crash occurs.

I was also having the same problem but it disappear once I removed the icedtea plugin from synaptic. After that I tried to re install the icetea plugin again and there was no issue in firefox, it started normally.
    My icetea6-plugin version is 6b20-1.9.1-1ubuntu3

You could try the new Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.
More information in this article: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]].
If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back to your current folder, if you like, using Firefox's Profile Manager. (See [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]] -- don't delete anything just yet; use this dialog to switch back and forth as needed.)
Does it work better after a reset?
