Firefox will not update
Strange thing happened! Tried to update Firefox by downloading and by using the update function within firefox without success...
When I try to install the update it tells me: ..... you do not have the system permissions required to install .....
However installing other programs works just fine!
I repaired the disk permissions and made sure the harddrive is ok - what else can I try?
Just download the latest version, drag the old version to the trash and put the new version in your Applications folder.

Firefox will not update three plugins appearing below the
statement in red : " vulnerable plugins". I tried three times, and
all I got was other pages with lots of ads. I need help. Thanks. Some plugins may need to be removed using the Control Panel, or Windows Explorer, because they are managed by other software or dropped in nonstandard folders. Can you list the three plugins so people can give specific advice on them?
For the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin you might need to update RealPlayer or use its options dialog to turn off the recording/downloading feature in order to remove this one. -
Firefox works well, except will not connect for updates
If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
*Firefox 30.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

Firefox will not update after installing new version
I have repeatedly updated Firefox (both by updating and by uninstalling completely and re-installing a fresh copy of the latest version) and when I go to HELP > ABOUT FIREFOX it shows I have version 6.0.2
BUT
SEVERAL sites (including Mozilla.com) give me pop-up notices saying I am using an outdated version of Firefox and need to upgrade. Firefox on this PC even looks and acts different than it does, for example on my other Windows 7 PC (which also has v 6.0.2)
HOW can I get Firefox to actually fully update itself and not only report that it's the latest version (I see that in the config it's reporting v 3.0.11) but to act like the latest version?
Like I said, I have tried uninstalling it completely and installing a fresh copy downloaded from Mozilla.com.Your User Agent used to post with is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060215 Firefox/3.0.11 FBSMTWB
See https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/new?title=Web+sites+or+add-ons+incorrectly+report+incompatible+browser
Check the '''general.useragent''' prefs on the '''about:config''' page.
You can open the '''about:config''' page via the Location (address) bar, just like you open a website.
Filter: '''general.useragent'''
If any '''general.useragent''' prefs are bold (user set) then right-click that pref and choose '''Reset'''.
It may likely be due to the FBSMTWB on end of your useragent that the Fast Browser Search toolbar extension you have now or had and it added on to UA. -
The laptop is less than a year old, and I hadn't used Firefox since I got it. I'm returning to Firefox now, but it's version 3.5.8 and I want 3.6. I check for software updates, but no FF update is offered. I try to download 3.6 from the Mozilla site, and all goes well until the end, when I get window with the message "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some items." Frustrating!!! Please help me update to 3.6. It shouldn't be this hard, should it?
Thanks from DustieIt sounds like you have an iphone 3g, which will only go to 4.2.1

* [[firefox just updated - why is it asking me to update again?]]
It is still possible the main problem is security related software blocking or even reverting changes.
There is probably no need to uninstall Firefox, ordinarily newer versions will install over older versions as will be mentioned in the articles I linked to. (Or ones they in turn link to). -
Firefox will NOT update, have to manually update, how to resolve?
Running windows XP, SP3. firefox notifies me that there is an update, I say yes update. it downloads the up date, which FAILS, then it downloads the whole program, which FAILS.
I then Manually down load and install - without a problem. this has happened over a number of updates.
In the past it use to do the updates, without a problem.
Checked all the answers in the help files, but they don't apply
== This happened ==
Not sure how oftenI have the same problem exactly.
In every previous version of FF, it updated normaly without any issue.
Now, is the first time FF wont update. It failed to update, and then it failed to download the whole program.
I am gonna download and install the program manually.
Is there a solution to it? -
My Firefox will not update.
A few months ago, there was an update for Firefox (I don't remember which one). I clicked install, and went through the entire process, but when it came time to click Firefox it wouldn't open. I tried downloading it again, but everytime it started to download it told me to close the current Firefox operation that was already running. I tried to un-install Firefox entirely so that I could re-install it, but I think I may have not un-installed all of it correctly (meaning I couldn't update OR use the old version that I had.) Today I tried to re-update, to see if that would work, but I have been having the same problem with it not opening.
If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version.
* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I see other people have this problem and hope there is a solution. My Firefox browser is stuck on 16.0 and nothing happens when I try to update. It seems to download, but I'm still on 16.0. I have tried every which way to update my browser. Now my bank (online banking) is saying I have to update to continue with them. Please help. (computer: MAC 10.6.8)

I've been having several problems with Firefox, to the point that I almost can't use it anymore. In no particular order, they include:
1. When I download something, 'Downloads' opens. When a d/l finishes I used to be able to run an install or open an image from there, but now I get this error message,
Windows cannot access the specified device, path of file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
...but I can go to my Downloads directory and run or open it from there.
2. If I go to File > Print or File > Print Preview, I get this
Printing Error:
"Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer now?"
and if I click yes, i get this,
"Operation could not be completed."
3. Firefox will not update itself. I go to About, it downloads the new update, and I click the Apply Update button. Firefox closes, and nothing happens. A few minutes later I click to run it, and it opens with a 'Software Update' window that says,
Update Failed
"The partial update could not be applied. Firefox will try again by downloading a complete Update"
...and that does not work.
I download the new version, and when trying to run it from Downloads, I get the error (as in #1 above):
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path of file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
When I go to the folder it's in and run it from there, it installs, but the problems persist.
4. I go to Help|Troubleshooting Information, and clicking the Reset Firefox button only closes Firefox. Clicking the Show Folder button doesn't do anything.
5. I used to be able to drag a url to the desktop, a folder or even a email, but now all I get the the O with a / through it.
6. I also used to be able to, when I click Browse on a site to upload a jpg or a gif, I could right click the file and open it in a photo viewing program (Irfanview or Paint), and now I get
"Windows cannot access the specified drive, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I've created a new profile and it makes no difference.
I've disabled all add-ons and it makes no difference (I have to disable them manually).
The problems are there for different user accounts in Windows.
I've uninstalled Firefox, and removed the profile - rebooted and reinstalled it, but the problems persist.
What more do I have to do more to completely uninstall it?
I've kinda saved myself by using Firefox Portable, which I'm running from it's own directory. It runs as it should, but I'd prefer not to have to use it.
If i can't fix it, I'd like to completely uninstall Firefox, and just install it new and have it work properly. I have no (or only occasional minor) problems with Firefox on other computers. This computer is Win XP, fully updatedThe post I was responding to said,
"Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps. "
Somehow, I think that means Windows...
I've tried Firefox in Safe Mode - it makes no difference. -
I switched on my PC and there was an update for realplayer. Since then firefox will not open as a window. It is running according to Task Manager. I've downloaded a another copy of the programme using IE but whilst it loaded as a programme, does not open a window.
Hi again,
Helps if I give the correct link ! <br/>The press shift button appears to still work, but the option to start in safe mode from the programs listing of a standard install I do not think exists anymore.
Safe mode will start from a command line, (or a shortcut) and in some circumstances you may need to enter the full path name on a command or shortcut detailed instructions are at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
Remember (at least at this stage) do not make changes when you get the options list, just click on the continue button.
If you think that RealPlayer is causing the problem you could uninstall that for now.
Firefox recent versions are 3.6 4.0 (and 5.0 in beta). There is some debate as to whether creating new profiles or re-installing Firefox is the simplest method of troubleshooting and solving some of these problems, personally I use multiple profiles and multiple versions of Firefox, and tend to forget the required procedures are less than straightforward. For now at least try [[safe mode]] again.
* see also Instructions for [[installing a previous version of firefox]] -
since installing the latest update, Firefox first operated with some errors but now will not load at all; it gives me the following error --
XML Parsing Error: not well formed
locations chrome://browser/content/browser.xml
Line Number 1191, column 20:
utton id="back-forward-dropmarker" type="menu" chromedir="&locale.dir;"-------------------
please note that the words "utton ID" are exactly as the error message gives it; and at the end of the message there are exactly 19 hyphens.
I don't know why this faulty code is referencing things to do with "chrome"... the Chrome browser is not installed on this PC or anywhere on our network.
Also, this is not the first problem I had after clicking Firefox's prompt for the latest update. Before Firefox retreated into this error message, it was loading but running with some faults...
1. the bookmark symbol was not appearing on the right hand side of the URL line, so I had always to click on "bookmark this page", after which the bookmark symbol did appear; however I don't know if the bookmarking function worked properly.
2. the back and forward buttons were not highlighted, as if I had not come from a previous page; so once I clicked on a link to a new page I could not go back to where I came from because Fiefox thought I hadn't come from anywhere.
3. there may have been other errors, but I did not find them.
How do I reinstate my Firefox program to work properly please? do I have to download the latest version and reinstal? if so, do I have to remove the old version first? or is there a fix?
Even to write this message I have been forced to use (yuk -- I don't like to say this!!!) Internet Explorer. So please -- I need help urgently.
Thanks,
NOELSome how I solved my problem by opening a user account and downloading Firefox 4.0 beta and installing it, I did try it, worked fine, so I did close the user account and did go back to my own account(switched user), the main page that I had problem with Firefox which would not open, I dabble click on Firefox it start working again!! I hope that solves your problem too.

Hi,
After updating to the AMD 13.1 drivers, on my 5770, Firefox will not launch; it does, however, show in the task manager. I should note that it will start in Windows safe mode; when I had it open in safe mode, I used that time to disable all plugins, add-ons, extensions, and created a new profile. This did not help. I also tried launching Firefox in to its safe mode, and had no luck with this either.
I experienced this problem once before, when trying to update to a previous version. I believe I was moving from 12.1 to 12.4, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Ultimately, my solution then was to retrograde back to my previous driver. The steps mentioned in the previous paragraph did not help at that time, not did a complete reinstall.
15 years of computer repair experience, and this has me baffled.
Thank you to anyone who might be able to help.

AMD 5770 graphics, running Catalyst 13.1By any chance, did you disable Firefox's use of hardware graphics acceleration? To avoid a round-trip through Windows Safe Mode, you could try adding these to your prefs.js file while Firefox is closed.
To quickly open the folder with the correct prefs.js file, you can use
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Because Firefox may overwrite change to this file at shutdown, you should edit it after closing Firefox and allowing a few moments for Firefox to finish updates to the files.
These are the preferences I think are most relevant:
user_pref("gfx.content.azure.enabled", false);
user_pref("gfx.direct2d.disabled", true);
Does that make any difference? -
Since latest update...Firefox will not allow a new page to be opened from a link in a current page. It will allow a new tab to be opened (with tabbed browsing checked) but i prefer a new page. Even in tabbed browsing links to things like a pdf will not work at all.
Firefox WILL NOT close. X-ing out will close the window but I can not get back to Firefox without closing it in task manager.
Firefox will not display my chosen home page without clicking on home icon.Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Every time I restart the computer and try to install firefox the same message keeps appearing. I attempted to uninstall the earlier version of firefox using "programs and features" in windows but the same message came up and thus I was unable to uninstall using that method. I have used a third party uninstall program which appeared to delete all traces of firefox including registry entries but I still have the same problem.
I am now in the position of not being able to load any version of firefox. HELPSame problem here. I installed version 4.0, then removed it and tried to install 3.6. Now no version Firefox will not install. I keep getting a message that I have to restart my computer in order for updates to a previous version can be installed.
