Firefox will open and immediately be "not responding" so I cannot do anything

I've never had an issue with Firefox, minus the occasional unresponsiveness, which a simple force close would cure. I was in Firefox just this morning on my MacBook Pro, surfing away as usual. All of a sudden it became unresponsive so I force closed it. Now, when it opens, I see the address bar, the top bar, and a gray page - no bookmark toolbar or anything now. I get the spinning wheel and am unable to click on any of the top links to try and get into the preferences... I need help!

Going to:
Library > Application Support > Mozilla
And deleting that folder seems to have solved my issue. I am now up and running again. That's the folder that has the extensions - and they must have been the culprit.

  • Safari do not open and ends up not responding

    Hi,
Safari no longer works for me after a software update. Safari will not open and ends up not responding upon launch at which time I have to force quit.
I have gone through the Mac help forums without finding a suitable answer and I tried the following actions but unfortunately not one is working.
    -I have tried to uninstall and install safari again (to uninstall the program I have deleted also all the cookies in preferences and library and application support);
-I have created a new user and safari does not work for the new user either.
It seems to me that the mac feels that a safari window is open but I cannot see it.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

A few things you can try (I see you have tried some of them already):
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    ¥ history.plist
    ¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.
If Safari is getting very slow:
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x
    This is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Having Adobe Flash Enabled caused Firefox to Hang, and then to "Not Respond".

    I Have the Following:
    Firefox 19.0
    Adobe Flash 11.6.602.171
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit SP1
After I first install a new version of Adobe Flash, everything works perfectly.
If I shut down my computer & start it up again maybe 10 minutes later, I will START having a problem.
I Click on my Firefox Icon.
Then I click on one of my bookmarks, like for Tucson Weather ( at www.weather.com ).
While Tucson Weather is "transferring data' or "waiting" or "connecting" the small blue indicator that spins to indicate that the computer is working to get the requested page loaded freezes & stops spinning.
Now, If I click any where on the page including the scroll bar, the page becomes dim & a very light color, white the cursor resembles an hour glass. This only lasts a minute or so.
If I click on the "X" to close the window, either nothing happens, or I get a message that Firefox is not responding, & do I want Windows to close the page. I have Windows close page.
Next I return to Firefox, disable Adobe Flash, & Firefox now works perfectly - Only Videos at You Tube are mostly not possible. I have had this problem since at least last September.

hello, maybe it's an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] makes a difference.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

My iPad does not recognize my Apple ID. I have completed a reset several times (as requested).
The re-set is shown as successful but then doesn't work..I'm locked out of everything!!!

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted.  If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • After an automatic update, Firefox will start but immediately terminate. How can I fix this problem? I am sick and tired of manually un-installing Firefox!!

Since Firefox version 12, after Firefox automatically applies an update, Firefox will launch and immediately terminate.
The only solution is to manually un-install Firefox, completely clean the registry of Firefox entries, and manually re-install a previous version of Fiirefox that will work -- I use version 4.0. And then manually update that version to the current version.
I DO NOT install the new automatic update option -- that is, the automatic maintenance option.
BUT never the less, EVERY TIME I check for the latest version of Firefox using HELP --> About
Firefox, the UPDATE is AUTOMATICALLY RUN and FIREFOX WILL NOT WORK AGAIN.
I have put with this none sense for 18 versions of Firefox - MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!

    Hi Andis.
First of all, this is completely normal behavior, although it's a bit irritating, I know. What happens is that when you close Firefox, despite the window disappearing right there and then, Firefox keeps running for a little bit until the whole closing procedure is completed. This can take a fraction of a second on fast computers, or can take a few seconds on slow computers or when Firefox is storing a large session (if you save your tabs). All you have to do is wait a bit until Firefox closes, and then open it again.
To see if it's still running, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and then, under the Processes tab, you can see if firefox.exe is still there. If it's taking an unusual amount of time to close (which happens very rarely, and only if the browser freezes on exit), you can force the application to terminate from this application (task manager).
Firefox 4.0 will reduce by 97% the time it takes firefox.exe to close, so this problem will be basically erased for Firefox's next version.
Until then, I can recommend you this extension, which helps you restart your browser more easily and without bothering about closing times:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3559/
    Hopefully this will help.

  • Why does firefox stop loading then when i close it and try to open it up again I keep getting this message:Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system

Firefox will just stop loading/ connecting to the internet. The gray circle will just continually move but it never turns green to load the pages. I know it's not my internet because my internet explorer works just fine while this is happening to firefox. So I close firefox and then try to re open it but I get the message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. So I wait a little bit then try and re open it and still get the same message. I then go into my windows task manager and try and end the firefox proccess but it won't end. So I restart my computer and firefox eventually starts acting up again.

For possible causes of this error, and how to troubleshoot it see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

Sounds like a "hang at exit" problem. There are several possible causes for that error. See:
    * How to stop the running Firefox process
** In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the '''<u>Processes</u>''' tab?
    ** See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application

    ** https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
    * You may need to try Firefox Safe Mode
** You may need to use '''Safe Mode''' to locate the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
**Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes '''<u>before</u>''' starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
** If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling '''<u>one at a time</u>''' until the problem reappears. '''<u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u>''' via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.
