Firefox will suddenly not open when I click the icon, even though I have used Firefox on this computer for several months with no issues.

I have always used Firefox with no problems but suddenly the window will not even open when I click the Firefox icon. No error windows appear either.

Hi pkuhne-
I am not sure why your Firefox stopped working all of a sudden. I would recommend uninstalling and then re-installing Firefox.
1) Get new download: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
2) Uninstall your current Firefox version.
3) Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
4) It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
Hope that helps

• Firefox will not open when I click the icon and windows task manger indicates firefox is running.

I can't open firefox. I click the icon, my cursor shows Firefox is loading, then nothing happens, the screen remains the same.

Hi Iekard.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to see if the firefox.exe process is running. If it is, terminate it and try to run Firefox again.
If that doesn't help, try running Firefox in safe mode. If it works like that, maybe it'll work again in normal mode.

• Firefox doesn't always open when I click the icon

I am running Windows 7, and was running Firefox 6. I just upgraded to 8. Regardless of the version of Firefox, however, there are times when I click the Firefox icon to start it (or try to open from a program list), yet a window doesn't open.
Judging by the task manager, it's actually running - there is just no visible window. Sometimes I can get it to start by "opening" it and ending the process in the task manager a few times, but sometimes I have to completely restart my computer to get Firefox to actually open.

Try to close Firefox via "File > Exit" if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

• What can I do to rectify the situation in which Firefox will not open pdf files in the browser, even though I have already used all the help suggestions to no avail?

I have tried everything Mozilla has suggested. Still when I click on a pdf, I get the message that the browser cannot open a pdf. I have gone through the help protocol, and it does not work.
I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and still not able to open pdf files within the browser.
What else do I do, except go to IE or Chrome and just leave Firefox completely???

A possible cause is the presence of a PDF plugin from an older Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

HELP

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• I updated to V4 but firefox will no longer open when I click on the icon. I can see that the process has started, but there is no browser display. Stopping the process and trying again does not work. Please advise

Prior to updating to V4, firefox worked perfectly with all my existing applications. After I updated it will not launch a browser page, even though the process is shown to be operable in the Task Manager. The same problem occurs on start-up of my computer, so there are no previous processes running.
I cannot launch the broswer at all so cannot try clearing the cache etc or other suggested troubleshooting solutions.

In the Task Manager, make sure to check both the Applications tab and the Processes tab. On the Processes tab, Firefox may have two different components running: firefox.exe and plugin-container.exe. Well, in 3.5.11, it would be only the first one.

• A new tab does not open when I click the + next to the current tab. How can I get it to work?

This feature used to work.

Remove '''''Ask Toolbar''''' as it is a problematic extension that often causes that problem. See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons and http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Cannot%20uninstall%20an%20add-on

• Firefox doesn't open when I click the icon

I've tried all the suggestions such as reinstalling, removing profiles, reseting PC. my Chrome and IE also dont open.
Any help is much appriciated...

hello madoded, if no other browsers start either then it might be a problem deep in your system that we cannot address with standard firefox troubleshooting procedures.
however, you can try the following: first please make sure that your security software isn't blocking your browsers. since such issues can also be caused by malware, also run a full scan of your system with the security software already in place and different tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes], [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx microsoft safety scanner] & [http://www.kaspersky.com/security-scan kaspersky security scan].

I cant find those the Virtual Browsing feature in my security software...

Hi,
You can try to access the support forum/online support of the security software. For many of the common configurations please see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firewalls this].

You may also want to check if Firefox is executable via its icon in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory installation directory].
