Firefox won't close properly in Vista or Win7

We (my wife and I) have been dealing with this issue for the last year. It's gotten to the point we are ready to migrate back to IE!
Situation:
Boot system
open FF browser
enjoy FF with its addon and browsing ease.
leave FF on and leave for a couple hours
upon returning, click on a new site or try to change pages on same site and it shows it is trying to load the page but NEVER does...
So you close FF, upon trying to open again it says another copy is running, so we bring up taskmgr, find the FF highlight it, click end process and finally we can open FF again.
I have tried it with our plugin's and w/o our plugins and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

  • Firefox won't close properly with symantec IPS 3.0 extension active

Hi, I have a problem with Firefox 5.0 not closing properly. After I close the browser it stays active as a process (firefox.exe*32) and I have to close that in Task Manager before I can open a new browser window. I've followed instructions on other posts and have found that by disabling all my firefox extensions and re-enabling 1 by 1 it's the Symantec IPS 3.0 that is causing the problem. There doesn't seem to be anyone else posting about this conflict and Norton says it needs to be left enabled.
    Any ideas???

  • Charging flap won't close properly

Hi all,I've had my Xperia Z for about two months now, great phone very happy with it except for this nagging issue. The waterproofing flap on my charging port won't close properly any more, everytime I close it the flap would pop out again after about 30 seconds. It's quite annoying to have it flapping about all the time but obviously it also means that my phone is no longer waterproof. The flap itself looks like new and the seal hasn't been damaged or anything, it just wouldn't stay in place. Is this a common problem? Should I send it back for a replacement?

I got the same issue on my very new ZR (2 weeks). At first I found the flap quite efficient then I started to play with my new toy so I charged a lot, forgot about the flap... Now that my usage is more reasonable, I noticed the flap start to pop up after a few second. It stays inside but clearly it s no more waterproof and above all it s UGLY! I tried to clean the port as advised in another post on xperia care but it was only a bit better.Wait a few second and it s out. I think it comes from the connection between the port and the small rubber/plastic oval that enable the water protection. As cleaning with towel... didn't work, I took a small sharp knife and I gently rubbed the rim of the usb port on the phone.Of course be very careful. I did it very gently with no real hope it will work (I was ready to go to sony). I just wanted to be sure it was total clean and finaly................ it worked for me! I just hoped I won't need to do that too often...

  • Firefox won't close and has now got 'stuck'!

    Hi
My version of Firefox on my home PC (v3.6, I think) always takes a short while before it completely closes.
If I close down Firefox but then restart it again because I've forgotten something it will give me an error message saying that Firefox needs to close completely before I can open it again.
That's fine - I can live with that.
However, last night I did exactly this - needed to reopen Firefox before it had completely closed and this time it has got stuck....I don't get the error message anymore. It won't open by double click, from Explorer or anything. I can't close it from Task Manager. I can't even uninstall it because it is "still open".
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Firefox often doesn't close properly if I have been using the Blackboard 'virtual learning environment'. Task Manager always reveals that the Firefox process is still running and Java as well. Killing Java allows Firefox to close. Is there a more elegant way of ensuring that Java isn't going to block Fx from closing, e.g. because an applet is invisibly waiting for something? It would be good to have a way of pre-emptively 'clearing' Java before closing Firefox. (Gryllida's solution of disabling Java altogether isn't suitable, because Blackboard and many other sites need it.) Thanks.
I run Firefox 4.0.1 on various machines with different OSs: Win XP Pro x64, Win 7 Pro x64 and Win XP Pro x32. All behave the same in this respect.

  • Firefox does not close properly making reopening later impossible without rebooting computer.

I live in Texas and my sister lives in Georgia. We are both experiencing problems with closing Firefox. It appears to close properly but when I try to reopen later in the day, my computer tells me that it is still running in the back ground and cannot be reopened. I tried upgrading to the latest version but the problem persists. When I go into Task Manager, I can't find an entry for Firefox to close out.

Press '''CTRL+SHIFT+ESC''' to open Task Manager, go to the '''Processes '''menu, right click on '''firefox.exe''' and choose '''Kill Process'''.
When you finish a browsing session, go to '''File '''| '''Exit '''to close it if the problem persists.
Try disabling the McAfee Virtual Technician plugin via '''Tools '''| '''Add-ons''' | '''Plugins'''.

If the problem persists in spite of the above steps, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • I have a problem closing tabs in Firefox v3.6.13. The first tab on the left hand side (ie the page that opens when I launch Firefox) won't close when I click on the red x.

I can't close the left hand tab except by exiting firefox. When i launch firefox the original tab stays open when I click on the red x, even if I have other tabs open.
i can alter the website displayed on the left hand tab but it still won't close and leave other more recent tabs open.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:

  • Firefox won't close

Since yesterday's upgrade, firefox won't fully close. It'll look like it has closed when I hit the red x but when I try to open a new instance I'll get an error saying that it's already running and can't be opened again until it's fully shut down.
I'll then see it running in windows task manager but when I tell it to "end process" it'll take five minutes or more to end the process and fully shut firefox down.
Is this a bug in the new version? The browser version is 29.0.1

hello bigtrees, yes unfortunately this is a known bug in the current version when you have set firefox to clear history on shutdown in certain situations. mozilla's developers are investigating the issue and working on a fix.

  • Want to revert to default settings - firefox won't close tabs on closing

Latest version of Firefox doesn't close tabs on closure after attempting to set up new tab groups. Now it won't show Facebook correctly. FB account works but not on this system.

You restore default setting through the Firefox SafeMode. <br />

  • Firefox won't open on WIndows vista & it has worked for years.

Used task manager, closed firefox.exe & restarted, worked twice & I disabled Norton Toolbar. Now firefox won't open. I uninstalled firefox and redownloaded it & still won't open. Search for the Profile Manager doesn't show anything.
I did download an HP update yesterday. I am using windows explorer for this since I have toahve that on my computer to access some citrix programs

Right mouse click the iTunes icon and select "Run as Administrator"

  • Firefox still won't close properly

I know early this summer an upgrade had a lot of people finding Firefox not closing completely, me included. Since then, a partial bug fix seems to have eliminated it from telling me it can't start because it wasn't closed. However, I still a good half the time find firefox among the processes running if I go to CtrlAltDel, which can impede Windows from shutting properly when I try to shut down.
This morning, as a further sign, I found a ton of cookies saved, no doubt because it didn't think the session had ended when I last used Firefox. (They're the kind of cookies I might have set to save for session only.)
I'm not expecting the forum to help me, just to be able to keep this bug on Mozilla's mind. A fix is long overdue.

I'm obviously getting contradictory replies, and I honestly don't think they're to the point of the bug of not shutting properly. Now, I could clean manually, but my usual clear history command exempts cookies, as does the clear history on shut down, so that my choices of when to accept cookies (never, for session, for good) remain. Thus, the suggestion to clear them all conflicts with my preferences, while the suggestion that I'm clearing too much conflicts with reality. The reason I have any set to remain, btw, is that the New York Times requires signing on for subscribers. But anyhow, this is still a problem.

  • Firefox will not close properly when I close a window. Is this a know issue?

I go to http://www.1035thearrow.com/ and click lisen live on top. it opens another window if I try to close that window Firefox crashes. If this is the last window I close it will partly close (in windows task manager it wont show up in applications) and it won't let me start a new session of Firefox until I stop the firefox.exe process in the task manager. When I restart Firefox it will bring that window back up with the same problem. Is this a known issue and if not how do I report it.

  • Firefox won't close completely, CTL+N and hyperlinks don't work

After many years of loving Firefox, lately it is causing me nothing but headaches. If I close Firefox, it doesn't close completely and continues running in the background. It often hangs and sucks so much CPU (upwards of 78%) that my entire system virtually locks up. I can't open a new Firefox window, ... regardless of whether I try from the menu bar or by using CTL+N. Hyperlinks on web pages won't work unless I right click and select "Open in a new tab."
I have tried disabling all of my add-ins. I am using the default theme. I have tried reinstalling Firefox, and yet still have the same problems. This has gotten way beyond being frustrating. I am about ready to completely uninstall Firefox and go back to the very much dreaded IE, so you know I must be desperate. If anyone can help I will be immensely appreciative.

I have that problem too. Actually, I've had that problem with Firefox 3.6.15.
When I close Firefox after, for example YouTube and try to open FF again, it says: "Firefox window is already open" or something like that.
Than I have to shut down a process in Task Manager. Really annoying.
Also, when that problem occurs, Firefox using about 80% of CPU and about 200MB of RAM.
By the way, I've installed FireFox 4 RC 2, and I don't have that problem anymore.

  • Firefox won't close without using Task Manager - end process; can't start in safe mode or disable add-ons

I've been having a memory leak/hanging problem for weeks -- FF slowly increases memory usage until it's at almost 100% and then freezes and I have to shut it down via Task Manager/end process.
Last week I updated to FF 12, and I also added the Web Developer 1.1.9 add-on. Now every time I open Firefox it tries to go to the "Web Developer installed" page, but the page never loads. Nothing else will load either.
I can't start in Safe Mode because of the problem with having to close it in Task Manager. I select "restart with add-ons disabled" and it just never opens. The Add-On manager page won't load, so I can't disable Web Developer to see if that's the problem.
I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled, and it still goes right back to the Web Developer page when I open the freshly installed copy.
    Help, please!

Have you already tried clearing the browser cache, opening a blank tab, and trying to open some other website ?
    * [[how to clear the cache]]
Instead of trying to open safe mode from within the User Interface menu have you tried alternative methods such as holding the shift key when you start Firefox. (After checking for running Firefox processes or plugincontainer and killing them if found )

  • Firefox won't close/  flashplayer won't download to desktop -- getting dizzy!

Found a solution to this problem,  I hope, July 22,09 note from "eagleberry" firefox user,  but I can not download flashplayer to desktop:
"use firefox to download the flash player setup fromfrom here to get the NPAPI version of flash, save it to your desktop   (htt;://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)
then close firefox using file - Exit, then check the Task Mngr-processes tab to make sure all firefox applications/uses  are closed  (XP: Ctrl-Alt-Del,  Vista:  shift-Ctrl-ESC- processes tab)
then run the Flash setup file from your desktop"

  • Firefox won't start properly. The process begins in task manager, but the program doesn't start.I have restarted the computor, and updated my plug-ins. Don't know what to do next. It will open in safe mode, but not regularly.

When we click on the icon to start firefox even though the process opens in task manager, the program screen doesn't open

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
