Firefox won't launch

I am having an issue with Firefox since I uploaded my firefox bookmarks from my old computer. Whenever I try to launch firefox, I get a message that says "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." I cannot find any other open window for firefox or any duplicate applications that could be causing this. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I haven't been able to get in to Mozilla support all day, but try googling "profile in use Mozilla." There's an article about this issue.
You can also post in the Firefox Support forum, no need to register. Make it clear this is a Mac. You should get help for this there.

And there's this thread about this issue to have a look at.

• Firefox won't launch entourage email from email link on website. I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8

since i upgraded to a more current version of Firefox, Firefox won't launch my Entourage email from an email link on websites. I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8

It amuses me that the email that was sent to confirm the posting of this question had a clickable link. Naturally that link did not work. Cutting and pasting it into FireFox allowed me to complete the posting process. Annoying.

• Safari and firefox won't launch and explorer opens but won't load correctly

Hi
Something weird is happening to our emac!
Got home yesterday after a few days away and all the apple aps have stopped working
Safari and itunes won't launch at all - they just bounce a couple of times in the dock - then nothing.
Firefox won't launch either - the only browser I can get to launch is explorer - and that won't load properly.
I've tried the software update - it says there's now software - but 'unexpectedly' quits if i try to download anything.
In desperation overnight I re-installed the software from the software restore discs - but this morning it's no better.
I saw a thread earlier that suggested that rogue fonts might be to blame - which could be something because the only page that loads in explorer displays strangely with the fonts all over the place.
Any advice that someone could give would be much appreciated
thanks x

HI,
*"In desperation overnight I re-installed the software from the software restore discs - but this morning it's no better."*
Better check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

• Installation of Comodo Free Firewall Crashed System, Now Firefox Won't Launch

I installed Firefox 4, then my ZoneAlarm Free Firewall and Free AVG 2011 Antivirus were rendered incompatible. As a result, I installed Comodo Firewall --- I did not uninstall Zone Alarm or AVG. Comodo instructed me to restart the laptop in order to finish the successful install. When I restarted the laptop, it crashed. I restarted in Safe Mode and did a system restore ---went back 6 days. Now Firefox won't launch.
What happened and how can I fix it?

Hi thanks for that. I've been through those pages already. I think maybe my lack of knowledge is hindering me somewhat. However the page you linked assumes two things: I can see the processes on Task Manager and I can start up Firefox. The latter is unusual. You see when it suggests changing or creating a profile, I have to use the profile manager which is part of Firefox - which I can't open.
I don't think a previous session is still running because I've restored and installed so many times.
While I appreciate the speedy response, if anyone has any ideas using words, I'd be extremely grateful. :0)

• Firefox won't launch even after re-install

Firefox hung and I forcequit. It would not restart. I cannot locate the sessionstore.js file -- it is not where Help says it should be. So I reinstalled it. It still won't launch. Then I restored it from Time Machine - still won't launch.
I cannot find any preferences files to remove.

hello pedro, this crash is caused by the "Media Accelerator" part your nvidia graphics driver. please see if you can selectively disable it in the nvidia control panel or even uninstall it. otherwise please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in firefox > options > advanced > general.

• Firefox won't launch--using Apple Snow Leop. Tried to download new FF but could not. Am working from Shanghai.

I used Firefox last night to check my bank account balance
Forgot to log off before going to bed.
In morning my Apple laptop was frozen, so I turned it off.
Then after restart Firefox would not launch.
I am using Safari to send this, but need to get back to Firefox.
I am a US citizen working at Tongji Univ. located in Shanghai.
thank you....paul j. tremont

Starman, I'm sorry to waste your time. I had been assured by my employer that our MSDN subscriptions were going to be renewed, but I just checked the subscription status and it shows that it expired July 1st. I had just used it right before the 1st, and I was thinking it didn't expire until the end of July. That would probably explain it, huh? It's weird though, that I'm not getting the grayed-out icons. Again, sorry to waste your time. Thanks. Joe

• Firefox won't launch and I can't get into Profile manager to make a new profile.

Whenever I try to launch Firefox it doesn't open. i've had this problem before and I fixed it using the profile manager, I'm trying to do the same thing this time. However the Profile Manager won't open at all.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Firefox won't launch facebook, but it does launch in Internet Explorer. How do I get it to launch in firefox?

When I try to launch facebook, an error message stating it is a untrusted site. But when I launch facebook in internet explorer it launches with out a problem. How do I get it to launch i n firefox? Yes the clock on my computer is set at the correct time.

Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details" to expand this section.
If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
If <b>"I Understand the Risks"</b> is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
*Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
*Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.

• Firefox won't launch - I get an error message saying that firefox has to close

It tells me it's sending a message to firefox but as I can't log in it won't do this.

I've just (finally) managed to fix this problem today. I checked the Apple Support forums, and it seems a lot of people are having the same problem.
I rang the Apple Support line, and the very helpful man (thanks Alan!) talked me through it stage by stage. If you go to the following page on the internet: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376   it takes you through the process. WARNING - it takes a little time!
Basically, the first thing you have to do is go to your Program Files and double click on your iTunes folder. There'll be a number of files with the suffix .dll - you need to move all the .dll files from that folder to your desktop - you can simply click and drag them on the desktop..
Next, uninstall iTunes - go to Control Panel / Add/Rempve Programs and when the list comes up remove iTunes. This will take a few minutes... Then reboot your computer.
Next, go back to Control Panel / Add Remove and Remove - IN THIS ORDER -
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot again!
Next, check in your Program Files that the iTunes folder is completely gone - if it has, great: if it hasn't, right-click on the folder and press Shift and Delete - it will say "Are you sure you want to completely remove the folder "iTunes"? Click on "Yes".
Reboot!
Then go to the iTunes download page and voila! It should download iTunes without any problems... well it did for me.... Good luck!

• Firefox won't launch Zimbra Desktop for mailto links

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Core 2 Duo
Running Firefox 26.
Installed Zimbra Desktop Email client, when I click mailto links it only offers Yahoo and Gmail.
In IE and other programs Zimbra launches when I use email features of those programs.
Zimbra is set to default email client.
Also strangely enought the download button in the top right doesn't work, I can see downloads but when I click the button nothing.

Usually Firefox will discover your default email client through the registry and offer that one prominently.
Sometimes the file that stores file associations becomes corrupted with conflicting entries and no longer updates correctly. The workaround is simply to rename the file and have Firefox regenerate it. If you'd like to try that, here's what you do.
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Leaving that window open, wwitch back to Firefox and Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old
Restart Firefox. Hopefully now Zimbra will be detected and you can select it. Please note that if you previously changed your setting for PDFs from the built-in viewer to another one, you will need to change that again.

• Firefox won't launch 90% of the time even though Internet Explorer does all the time

Why doesn' Firefox launch? It's my default browser. Internet Explorer always launches when asked.

One of your add-ons might be the culprit. Try running Firefox in Safe Mode. If that solves the problem, see Troubleshooting extensions and themes and possibly Troubleshooting plugins

If that does not solve the problem, a new profile Then, Recover your data from the old profile. See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile

• I have a new MacBook Pro running 10.6.6 and firefox won't launch after downloading

I bought a new MacBookPro and the computer is running fine. I tried running firefox 3.6.12 or 3.6.15. They downloaded (via safari) fine but when I tried to open them (after the permission dialogue box), nothing happens and they fail to launch. All my other programs are running fine so I suspect it is a compatibility problem.
Please advise a solution.

Are you sure your Mac Book Pro has Thunderbolt (lightning symbol next to the port) and not Mini DisplayPort (rectangle symbol)?

• Firefox won't launch with Vista

It runs in the background as I can see in it processes......anyone have a solution.
Thanks

Had the same problem. It was my nod32 firewall that was blocking the firefox.exe file.
Try to rename the firefox.exe to firefox1.exe and run it. In my case it ran withouth problems. I didn't had nod32 gui opened and so it didn't ask me if i want to block firefox.exe so it just blocked it. When i ran nod32 gui it asked me if I want to block it and I clicked no, now it starts normal.
So check your firewall or anything else that could block your firefox.
cheers

• Applications won't launch in Yosemite OS X

After installing Yosemite OS X some applications such as Photoshop CS6, Firefox won't launch. The icons of the applications keep bounching in the dock and after a while it will stop bounching  with the message "Application Not Responding". Seems like every application which isn't by Apple has launching problems...
Need help to fix this fast.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
