Firefox won't open: "Firefox isn't supported by this architecture" (Mac)

I had Firefox installed for several years, but it couldn't be updated: in 'preferences' the 'automatic update Firefox'-zone was grey (not active). So I decided to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it again after having downloaded the 6.0 version. Over the Ff-logo is a 'forbidden'-symbol and when I try to launch it, I get the above message (not supported by this architecture).
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 on my iMac

OS X 10.5.* requires an Intel chip, if you don't have that, then it is not supported, and you would need to go back 3.6.21
For those that really need an earlier version of Firefox, find your system and the Firefox version you want in releases, download and start the install.
* ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
:or with the latest of version 3
* http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older.html
: Note Mac OS X 10.4 user, and Mac OS X 10.5 users without Intel cannot upgrade to Firefox 6.
When reinstalling Firefox from a download, Firefox must be down once the installation starts. When the installation finishes, don't let the install start firefox for you. Instead end the install and start Firefox in your normal manner, thus preventing creating a new profile which does not have your bookmarks cookies, etc (but your old profile would still be around and would).

  • FF 4.0 "Cannot open...Not supported by this architecture."

I downloaded FF 4.0 to my iMac G5, running OS X , 10.5.8, put it in my application folder, and then dragged it to the dock.
The logo had a "forbidden" sign superimposed, and when I tried to
open FF, received the message: "Cannot be opened...not supported by this architecture."

    Firefox 4.0 doesn't work with PPC Mac's.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />

  • IPhoto "isn't supported by this architecture"?

On my iMac (circa late 2008), whenever I try to open iPhoto, a window pops up that says that the application can't be opened because it isn't supported by this architecture. The icon is no longer the sunset photo with the camera in front of it, its just a "no" sign (circle with a cross through it). Is there any way to recover iPhoto?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • How do you open a file "not supported on this architecture"?

I downloaded an upgrade for my MiFi today.  Installation went well until I tried to open the application.  Then I received this notice:  You can't open the application "DUU_Verizon_MiFi4510L_FW2.23" because it is not supported on this architecture.  Now what do I do?

Thanks, that makes sense.  I was on the phone with Verizon trying to figure this out and they did not have this information.  Their only concern was my OS.  They said that I could go to my local Verizon store and they would upgrade for me.  I hope this works.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • I get a message that something isn't supported by "this architecture"

I am trying to install a new printer and when I insert the software disc a message comes up saying it can't open it due to the wrong "architecture". I have never heard of this before! The disc plainly states that is supports OS 10.5.8.

Thank you, I do have an older 10.5.8 that doesn't have Intel, so that seems to be the problem! (Want to buy a brand new printer? )
The printer is an Epson XP-610, and the disc said OS 10.5.8, so word to the wise with old computers!

  • My Mac with OS 10.5.8 says I cannot open Firefox because it is not supported on this architecture. I tried to update my version, and this is all I get now. What can I do to use Firefox again? Thank you.

My computer is not allowing me to utilize any version of Firefox, after multiple downloading attempts. I simply get a message that Firefox is not supported on this architecture, and the Firefox icon in my toolbar now has a circle on it with a line through it (Canceled). I hope that someone can explain what I need to do to be able to use Firefox once again. Thank you, TC

As you have a PPC or Power Mac the last release form Mozilla to work on PPC is Firefox 3.6.*
Firefox 3.6.23 can be found at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Since you have a PPC Mac there is this third-party option for Firefox 7.0.1 at

As of Firefox 4.0, a '''Intel''' Mac with OSX 10.5+ is required for Firefox builds from Mozilla. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/7.0.1/system-requirements/

  • Can't open the application "Firefox.app" because it is not supported by this architecture. I'm using mac os 10.5.8

Been using Firefox (many years) version 3.16.. Received invitation to download Firefox version 4 for Mac this morning and did so (regretably losing 3.16 version) because now the new version 4 won't open. I just keep getting the error message "You can't open the application "Firefox.app" because it is not supported by this architecture." I'm using the latest Mac OS 10.5.8. The processor is 1.8 GHz Power PC G5.

Use Tony's suggestion. I am running it right now and it is awesome. I love Mozilla but they basically screwed all of those older Macs over. Come on Mozilla. These Macs still work, and there are plenty of people with them out there.
