Firefox won't open mailto links in a new window like it used to...it just opens gmail in the current tab.

I recently upgraded firefox and now whenever I click a mailto link it opens gmail in the current tab rather than in a new window. How can I get it to open email links in a new window.

My MAILTO problem was finally fixed on the June 29, 2012 Firefox version 14 beta 10 release.

I had the same problem when i dl-ed a new anti-virus softward, but what I did help me reconnect Firefox again!
    Here is what I did,
Go to open firefox browser-->option-->advanced-->network-->settings-->and change it to auto-detect proxy settings for this network!
It worked for you, hope it will work for you too =)!

Sounds like a "hang at exit" problem. There are several possible causes for that error. See:
    * How to stop the running Firefox process
** In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the '''<u>Processes</u>''' tab?
    ** See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application
    * What may cause Firefox to hang at exit

    ** https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
    * You may need to try Firefox Safe Mode
** You may need to use '''Safe Mode''' to locate the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
**Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes '''<u>before</u>''' starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
** If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling '''<u>one at a time</u>''' until the problem reappears. '''<u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u>''' via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

  • How can I make new tabs open next to the current tab?

New tabs are advertised in Firefox 5.0 as being set to open next the the current tab by default. Mine, however, do not do this. They open to the right of the last tab, necessitating a lot of tab-scrolling, and a minor waste of time.
I have not installed the extension that forces the tab behaviour I'm currently witnessing.
Is there a kind soul out there with any suggestions for how I can get my new tabs to appear next to the tab I'm working on?

Tabs that are "related" to the current tab, like the same domain, open to the right of the current tab. Other links that are from other domains open at the right end of the tab strip.
The pref for that actions is '''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent'''.
To have them all open to the right of the current tab would need an add-on, if that action even exists in an add-on.

  • I want to open bookmarked pages in a new tab, like it used to, rather than having it replace the current page in the current tab. Ho do I do this?

In earlier verisions of Firefox, when I opened bookmarked pages, they opened in a new tab. Now, in version 6.0.1, when I open a bookmark, it opens in the current tab and replaces the page I am reading. I want the bookmarks to open in a new tab just like links open in a new tab. How do I do that?

Middle-click the bookmark with the mouse scroll wheel to open the link in a new tab.

  • Firefox won't open a link in a new window, crashes my xp desktop, locked my laptop out of the network. Uninstalled for now. Both systems fixed themselves.

Started having trouble on my IBM compatible XP desktop about a month ago, dominated CPU anytime a link used java to try to load in a new window, used 99% of capacity. Discovered old XP Laptop couldn't go to the internet or network last week, tested all hardware. Happened to uninstall Firefox on a whim. Laptop could go to internet, and I successfully backed up over my network.
Firefox version 3.6.12 I think. Doesn't seem to be opening new windows today either. Uninstalling until a fix can be found.

What in particular didn't you like about Firefox 6?
You can undo a lot of changes, either via changing settings or prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page or via extensions.
Do a clean reinstall of the version that you want to use.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    *Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • My Firefox won't open Gmail

In the morning around 6 am, when I wake up, I go on my computer before school. I like to check my email, but every time I try to open Gmail, it says that the internet of whatever is down. Like "No Connection" ALL the other sites I go on (except Facebook also) are able to open. This is especially annoying, because I KINDA NEED my gmail for HW and such- I am a student who wants good grades and all.

There is nothing on that thread that says Javascript is turned off by default. to quote:
"In Firefox 23, as part of an effort to simplify the Firefox options set and protect users from unintentially damaging their Firefox, the option to disable JavaScript was removed from the Firefox Options window.
However, the option to disable JavaScript was not removed from Firefox entirely. You can still access it from about:config or by installing an add-on. "
The UI checkbox to disable Javascript was removed, but the option still exists in about:config (which isn't code btw, it's just preferences), nor was Javascript turned off by default, in fact the opposite is true, it is enabled by default with the option to disable it made a little more difficult to find, as only advanced users need to disable Javascript.
Please try to clear the cache and cookies for gmail, let's see if those are causing problems. [[Delete cookies to remove the information websites have stored on your computer]], [[How to clear the Firefox cache]]

  • Firefox has started loading external links in a new window instead of a new tab

Until recently, external links have always opened in a new tab. The last few days thaey've started opening in a new window. I can't find anything I have changed.

I am running IE Tab 2 (FF 3.6+) 2.12.21.1 by ietab.net and was experiencing this problem... I just disabled it and the problem went away.

  • I did a Sony Vaio Care maintenance and now Explorer works find, Firefox won't open Gmail except in HTML and won't display features on Facebook or parts of webpages. Java is on. Flahs is OK. Explorer works just fine but Firefox will not.

Gmail will not open except in HTML
My homepage ButchNews.com will not display google ads, nor content from some widgets.
    Facebook messages will not open.
But everything works fine in Explorer... except I hate Explorer.

I was having this problem too and found an easy fix from another thread. Finally have my firefox back up and running!! See below:
"Easy to fix. Clear your browser cache (Tools > Clear Recent History > select Cache, click Clear Now).
That fixed it for me. I have to do it every time I run Vaio Care."

  • Firefox won't open; I get the msg. "Cannot open file or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\USP10.dll - what's up?

I've tried uninstalling Firefox, re-downloading it (various versions and sites), and re-installing; I just get the same reference to
    "USP10.dll" in directory C:\WINDOWS\ system32 ...
    so wha' happen?
I don't think I did anything (install or whatever) before this happened
    Thanks for any suggestion.

But I can't... find... it... It's not there.
Unless you're talking about the entire Mozilla Firefox folder (which isn't what the thing you copied says,) there is no installation folder.

  • While opening a new tab via the Alt + Enter command, is it possible to make it open next to the current tab, and not in the end?

Any insight on how to achieve this will be very welcome.

There is not a built-in setting for opening new "unrelated" tabs anywhere except at the end of the tab bar.
Various add-on authors have tackled this request over the years. It's not really clear to me which of these extensions still work, but you might check the reviews and see what you think. (I haven't tried these myself)

  • Firefox opens all links in the current tab.

firefox used to open links from google in the same tab while having links like gyazo links or anything like that open in a new tab. similar to how google chrome does it. then i reset firefox and now when i try to open links it opens them in the current tab. i know that i can right click and open in a new tab but it gets annoying doing that over and over again. is there anyway i can put it back how it was?

Most likely not. As far as I know, the decision to open in a new or current tab by default comes from the webpage, not the browser. However, there's an easy way to do this.
    1. Try clicking the middle mouse button (the wheel). This is a built-in shortcut in Firefox to open the link in a new tab.
    2. You could try an extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-link-in-new-tab/
Other than that, I don't know.
