Firefox won't open url links from mail

I don't know if this question has been asked yet, but I am having problems opening links from mail. I am using Firefox 3.5.3 and Snow Leopard. Every time I click on a link in my mail firefox opens to the homepage. Firefox will only link to the proper webpage if it is already opened. Does anyone know if there is a way to link directly to the webpage when firefox is not opened?
Thanks

Same thing here. Although mine just doesn't do anything. Firefox is open, but no new tab is created at all. Clicking a link in Mail does seem to activate Firefox's menu, though.
I just switched to using Firefox a few days ago, because my Safari kept crashing. Since my work is entirely on the web, I had to switch to keep functioning (but that's another issue).

I'm having this problem, everytime i click a link on other program, like the program's link on the about tab, or a youtube link on Live Messenger, it won't open, a dialog pops up saying firefox is already running and not responding, but it is there, and working.
If it matters, i have the "beta" tab preview enabled on the windows 7 toolbar.

  • Safari is not opening any links from Mail.

Safari is not opening any links from .Mail.  I am having to copy and paste every one into a browser.  I've tried 'right-clicking' and then open with Safari but that isn't working either.  Any suggestions?

Hi--thanks for responding.  My default browser was set at Safari 6.0.

  • Firefox won't open email links after update to version 32

I just updated to Firefox 32. When I have FF open but hidden in my Dock on my Mac 10.6.8 it will not open links from my email in Outlook 2011 for Mac. All it will do is unhide Firefox from my dock. Once FF is visible and I click the same link in my email it will open a new tab to that web page. If FF is completely closed and I click a link in an email it will launch FF and open the web page. Only when FF is already open but "Hiding" in my Dock will it not open a new tab with the web page when I click a link from email. I didn't have this problem before the update.
FYI, Firefox is my default browser. I opened Safari and have FF listed as my default browser too. When I did the update I did a brand new download and install.

I use Outlook as my email client on my MAC and since the Firefox update, I cannot open hyperlinks in emails at all. The hyperlinks will open in Safari, but I prefer using Firefox and have it set as my default browzer.
Please fix this. It's truly annoying not to be able to open things!
Or tell me how to fix it. Thanks.

  • How do I get Firefox 12 to open a link from Google search results?

Ever since upgrading to version 12.0, whenever I click on certain links the browser just "reloads" the same page I am on rather than loading the new page in the same tab. When this happens it's not opening the link in a new tab or window, instead just for a second the tab I am on says "connecting" and has the circular busy indicator, and then I'm right where I was before. In order actually follow a link I'm having to context click and then click Open in a new Tab.
On a lot of websites the links follow as usual and open the new page in the same tab. Others don't however, such as the search results page from google. I'm wondering if this is something to do with the new anti-duplicate tab feature, and if so, how do I disable that? I'm on OSX 10.6.8. Thanks.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Firefox won't open mailto links in a new window like it used to...it just opens gmail in the current tab.

I recently upgraded firefox and now whenever I click a mailto link it opens gmail in the current tab rather than in a new window. How can I get it to open email links in a new window.

My MAILTO problem was finally fixed on the June 29, 2012 Firefox version 14 beta 10 release.

  • Outlook Express or Firefox hangs when opening a link from OE

When opening a link in OE6 emails, Firefox 6 takes eons to finally come up if it does not hang OE in the end. It makes no difference if Firefox is already open or if it needs to launch. Any idea what is going on. This is a new problem in the last few weeks.

This sounds like the same problem we're discussing here.

  • Firefox won't open a link in a new window, crashes my xp desktop, locked my laptop out of the network. Uninstalled for now. Both systems fixed themselves.

Started having trouble on my IBM compatible XP desktop about a month ago, dominated CPU anytime a link used java to try to load in a new window, used 99% of capacity. Discovered old XP Laptop couldn't go to the internet or network last week, tested all hardware. Happened to uninstall Firefox on a whim. Laptop could go to internet, and I successfully backed up over my network.
Firefox version 3.6.12 I think. Doesn't seem to be opening new windows today either. Uninstalling until a fix can be found.

What in particular didn't you like about Firefox 6?
You can undo a lot of changes, either via changing settings or prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page or via extensions.
Do a clean reinstall of the version that you want to use.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    *Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Opening a link from Mail freezes Safari

I have emails the include hyperlinks sent to me, and when i click on them Safari opens and begins to load the page, but once I try scrolling down or going to anything else, Safari freezes and displays a spinning rainbow-colored circle. I then have to proceed to Force Quit Safari and re-start. I already tried re-setting Safari but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.Safari.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, post a crash log.
How to locate a crash log:
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Click "Go" in the menu, then select "Go to Folder".
    3. Copy and paste this path into the Finder dialog:
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
    4. Click the Go button.
    5. Finder opens the folder containing the crash log. Look for a the crash file with a date field that looks like the most recent.

  • Firefox won't open links from Mac Mail

Like everyone else Apple Mail links will not open in Firefox if it is already open. Clicking a link brings FF to the front but no page loads. Links work if FF is not open. Links work if command is pressed whilst clicking the link (opens in new tab in background).
Problem occurred after 32.0.2 update, it appeared to briefly resolve itself after 32.0.3 update, but stopped (I think) on next reboot.
Have monkeyed around for ages with different combinations of default browser and rebooting.
Will abandon FF and go back to Safari if this isn't sorted soon - shame.

I just want to link to these earlier threads so you don't get a lot of duplicate suggestions that have already been covered there:
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1018542 Firefox won't open email links after update to version 32]
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1023202 No tab opens when I click on a link if any Firefox window is already open]
(There might be others, but those are the ones I've seen)
Work is proceeding on [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1017595 Bug #1017595 – Links from external applications sometimes fail to open when Firefox is hidden] but as you can tell from the title, this is focused on the problem of Firefox not coming out of hiding from the dock or coming out of hiding but not loading the page. If this also occurs when Firefox is not hidden at all, there may be a secondary issue. But hopefully solving the one will solve the other. Unfortunately, I don't know whether it will be in time for Firefox 33.

  • Firefox 32.0.1 installed on my Mac OS 10.6.8 and links from Mail no longer open. Click a link and Firefox opens, but the link doesn't appear or activate.

Some users have a similar problem to this, but if FireFox is already open the link from their mail client will activate in FireFox. For me, once I click a link in an email, FireFox immediately becomes the active application, but nothing further happens. FireFox has been the default browser for ages, but I stopped that, and set Safari as the default. Then quitting and re-opening FireFox I re-established it as the default browser, but the problem persists.

It amuses me that the email that was sent to confirm the posting of this question had a clickable link. Naturally that link did not work. Cutting and pasting it into FireFox allowed me to complete the posting process. Annoying.

  • Url links in Mail & Word are not opening in Firefox. Safari loaded url's just fine. Working on Mac OSX 10.6.6

Suddenly today when I click on url links in Mail or Word the desktop switches to Firefox but not page opens. This changed on both my desktop (iMac) and laptop (Macbook Air). I've never had this happen before. I tried Safari and the url's loaded just fine. Help! - jim

My camera is a 1Ds mk II..
and for that one it says
All versions tested. All versions tested. Supported only through Lightroom 4.1.
    however, it also says
Windows XP, Vista, 7; Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6
which is plain wrong, because Canon never supported any drivers for Windows Vista or Win 7, not to speak of XP 64bit. (You cannot connect the camera via firewire, without the device drivers!)

  • Not opening links from mail - firefox turns grey at bottom

firefox usually opens links from "mail" in a new tab. Sometimes
firefox greys out and will not allow links to open. Clearing history
or restarting firefox solves the problem somettimes. Multiple restarts
    may be required.

I suggest you to file a bug report regarding this issue: https://bugreport.apple.com/
I can confirm that Safari has serious issues with opening links from other applications. For example Content Guide links in Quicktime Player opens empty windows.

  • Firefox won't open (in a new session) from email link. I have this issue on my Win 7 and XP computers.

If I open my email account (TBird) w/out opening Firefox, and then try to open a link from the email, Firefox will not open. I can't then go and open it from the desktop either. I used to go to Task Manager and close the .exe file," but MS has changed that so that I can't get into the "process" area. How do I fix this?

Although 6 other people seem to have encountered this problem, nobody has offered a solution yet. Perhaps the following will put some Firefox gurus on the right trail.
When I said "my search results", I meant the results obtained with Google (standard when installing Firefox). Now I have tried another search engine (Dogpile) and there The tabs do work. Very strange, isn't it ?
