Firefox won't open when clicked in the dock on my Mac

Mac Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8, Firefox icon in dock, won't open when clicked

As a point of clarification, does Firefox launch if you double click it from your Applications folder through the desktop (Finder)? If yes, right click (or Ctrl-click) on the Firefox icon in your Dock and choose Remove From Dock, then drag it on again from your Applications folder. The only other thing I can think is if it's already running but with its window hidden, clicking it again in the Dock might not be bringing it up. In that case try a Force Quit (from the Apple menu at top-left of your screen, click Force Quit..., choose Firefox in the list and click the Force Quit button).

  • Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
    Thank You!
I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
    I have:
Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it?

  • Firefox won't start whenI click on the icon; info on help page doesn't help

I have Windows XP and Verizon Internet Security Suite. I've installed Firefox twice (with an uninstall in between) and it still won't load when I double-click on the icon. It runs fine on my other laptop with same OS and same anti-virus/firewall. Info on help page doesn't actually address this problem, even though the headline indicates it does.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Firefox has never actually opened. I double-click the icon and nothing happens. Check task mgr, it's not listed. ==

See my update at 6:46PST - having the very same problem on a MacBook Pro. Someone named "Sherry" posted around 5:42PST w/ same problem. No techies are picking up on these posts, though. Please add a comment to mine as well to keep it at the top and see if we can get some visibility to what is obviously a bug.
Did you upload a new version/update? That is what caused my problem

  • I updated Firefox, now every time I click on the Dock image my Mac reloads the disc image on my desktop and tells me this is the first time I've tried to open the program. What's going on? This is very annoying.

I contacted Sony, who spent 90 minutes trying to help me fix this, to be told it is a problem with the program, not the computer. I have deleted every trace of the program then reloaded it, three times, with the same results every time. This all started when I added a bunch of 'extras' from Mozilla. These 'add-ons' remain in the program when it is reloaded, so they may be the problem.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.<br />
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

Messages icon won't open when clicking on the icon since downloading Maverick.  Is there a fix?

    Hi,
Open the Font Book and check the AppleGothic Font is Active, not duplicated and Validates (File Menu).
In the list of fonts it is a long way down.
After that check Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande.
The first deals with the iMessages Login.
The next is the Font used in the app to display the text. The last is the one that title the Group Bars in Buddy lists (even if you don't show then you need this)
If they check out go to Applications/Utilities and open the Disk Utility and then Repair Permissions.
This checks them against the database on the Mac which is updated when the apps and OS are updated.

  • Firefox won't open when I click on the icon. I've tried uninstalling so that I can reinstall, but it says I have to close firefox (which isn't open), so I'm stuck.

The problem: Firefox won't open when I click on the program.
Solutions tried: #1) I tried to uninstall the program so that I can download it again, but the screen shows the message "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation". However, firefox is not open.
#2) I tried to download firefox, thinking that possibly it would update and solve the problem. However, I get the same error message that "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation" Problem is that firefox is not open.
I've done a screen shot, so you can see that I do not have the firefox browser open.

Thanks for the reply. I tried repairing the permissions (as well as several other things like deleting the Finder preferences file), but no dice.
Given that the problem cropped up right after updating OS X on two separate machines, it's looking to me like it's just a bug that needs squashing at this point.

Sounds like a "hang at exit" problem. There are several possible causes for that error. See:
    * How to stop the running Firefox process
** In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the '''<u>Processes</u>''' tab?
    ** See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application

    ** https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
    * You may need to try Firefox Safe Mode
** You may need to use '''Safe Mode''' to locate the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
**Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes '''<u>before</u>''' starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
** If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling '''<u>one at a time</u>''' until the problem reappears. '''<u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u>''' via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

I found something that could be a workaround ... wel at least it's gotten me one step further (windows 7 now recognizes the scanner as the right device (symbol usb sync cradle), but step 8 keeps failing.

    1. Install WMDC 6.
    2. Plus the Windows CE based device.
    3. Close the "Found new hardware" wizard.
    4. Right-click on "Computer" and select "Manage"
    5. Open the Device Manager, then select the Windows CE based device.
    6. Right-click and select "Update driver..."
    7. In the wizard, select "pick from a list..."
    8. In the list, select "Microsoft USB Sync [Microsoft]".
    9. ... nothing else! It works!
Anything else I could try now?The first time I tried step 8, the microsoft usb sync driver was in the list but I got an error while updating the driver. The second time, it didn't appear on the list anymore. I'm thinking this is more of a 64-bit driver problem.
    Thanks, Joachim

  • I have ipad wi-fi cellular.  Photos won't open when I insert the SD Reader.  I tried syncing photos through itunes and that didn't work either. What do I need to do to get photos on ipad?

Have ipad wi-fi cellular.  Photos won't open when I insert the SD Reader.  I also can't download photos from pc through itunes.  Need help getting pictures on ipad.

For the SD card, are you copying the photos onto it yourself from your computer ? If you are then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.
In terms of syncing photos, what happens when you try ? You should be able to sync photos by connecting your iPad to your computer and selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side selecting the Photos tab - using that tab you should be able to select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

When I click on the dock icon to open Thunderbird, the menu at the top of the screen opens, but no windows, ie. Mail & Newsgroups, New Message, About Thunderbird, etc. will open on my desktop. I have to click on Hide Thunderbird, then click on the dock icon again, and then all of the windows I attempted to open become visible. This is on a Mac running OS 10.8.5, Thunderbird 3.0.11. All runs normally after this until I quite Thunderbird.

    Hello,
Sorry you are frustrated. If you have improvements you would like to make, you can file them to the [[Suggestion Box]] and the Firefox logo in the top left with upside down arrow is the Firefox button containing menu items. Try a clean reinstall as instructed below to see if it resolved your issue.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • Win 7 Firefox 3.6.13, new tab won't open when clicked, on desktop or laptop.

I cannot open a new tab in Firefox 3.6.13, running Windows 7. It doesn't work on my desktop, or my laptop. When I click on the "+" to add a tab, or right click on it and choose "New Tab", nothing happens.

I don't have an AskToolbar, nor a Yahoo toolbar. Between updating Firefox to 3.6.13, and MS Patch Tuesday last night, I cannot use right click to open a new window. I can open a link using right click and 'in new Tab' -- but I don't LIKE tabs! Lots of links on various pages won't open at all (it may be all of the links, I haven't tried ALL of them).
I tried reverting to 3.6.12, and the same problem occurred. Does that mean it came from Microsoft? Re-updated to 3.6.13 and it remains broken. So frustrated I want to cry!

  • Firefox won't open when I click on it.

I click on both the icon in the dock and in the apps folder. When I click on the icon in the dock it bounces a couple of times and then nothing, it doesn't open and no white dot appears like they do on open apps in the dock. I am running the latest Mac OS. After having this happen I updated my software and downloaded at new version of Firefox off the web but the same thing happens. I have not downloaded anything in the last week and have been using firefox up until today.

okay I threw away my profile for firefox in library/application support/firefox and now it opens, a corrupt file apparently. Sorry for my tardy reply, sounds like you may have solved it, but I figured this might help someone else.

  • My Firefox won't open when I double click it. 16.0.2

Okay, so I got this new computer (Gateway) on Friday, and Sunday Firefox decides to not work. I have been un-installing and re-installing Firefox. I have done this like 20 times. Didn't help. I also have tried pressing 'shift' while double clicking on the icon for Firefox, didn't work either!! I'm currently using Explorer (not crazy about.. but will have to deal until this gets solved). I have also tried this link:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html. Did not work either.
    Please help me!!!

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program (16.0.1 to 16.0.2).
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
