Firefox won't save privacy cookie settings.

I had a virus infect one of my home PCs. It came up as "Windows 7 Security 2012" and I could not do anything without that virus popping all kinds of authentic looking security screens.
I finally wound up using another of my PCs (which I am using now), to go into microsoft website, and download a scanner and malicious software removal programs onto a flash drive, which I then ran in safe mode on the infected PC. It seems to have worked, but now the problem I have in Firefox is as follows:
I cannot save privacy cookie settings. I don't want to set cookies on and I uncheck them in the privacy window. However, everytime I exit and reopen Firefox, the cookies are reverted to check marks. I tried the steps of deleting prefs files, and that did not work. I also upgraded to latest level of Firefox because it had been a while since I updated the browser.
None of that worked, and everytime I use Firefox, first thing I do is set privacy and turn cookies, which is too late anyway because I have to also delete the cookies that were set as Firefox was coming up.
This is the first time I have had problem with Firefox, but I also realize it could be because of the virus. I don't know what else to do because I upgraded Firefox and tried the suggested support steps for "Preferences not saved". I hate this also because I have to resort to Windows Internet Explorer, something I absolutely loath. Please help!!!!!

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Updated Firefox won't save my preferences; reverts to original settings.

A few days ago, Firefox updated itself to the 18.0.1 version. Now, each time Firefox updates itself, I tend to lose some of my preferences, those being: opening new tabs as a blank page, tabs being on the bottom, and showing my windows and tabs from last time. Usually, though, once I go and change these things back to the way I like them, they stay like that and I have no further problems.
However, this time Firefox won't save my preferences. The tabs go back to being on top, the tabs I last closed aren't there, and these tool bars I don't want keep appearing. Instead, three tabs are always there upon opening Firefox: Welcome to Firefox, Mozilla Firefox Start Page, and Yahoo! Toolbar. Also, when opening a new tab, the page says, "page does not exist" or something, and the URL is not even comprehensible, just random letters like someone bashed their head into the keyboard, something like: "jkfui87$^&%$$09."
I've tried resetting Firefox like it says in the "How to fix preferences that won't save" page, but it didn't help. As for deleting certain files from the profile folder, before I resetted Firefox, I only had "user" and "prefs" and "Invalidprefs" which weren't exactly what that self-helping page asked for so I didn't delete them. After I resetted Firefox I lost the "user" file, but I still have the other two. Should I try deleting them even if they're not exactly like the page describes? They are missing the ".js" part so I haven't felt comfortable messing with them.
Please give me some advice. I'm tired of having to go change my settings in "about:config" each time I open Firefox. But I really don't want to try anything that would delete my bookmarks or history, as I'm very dependent of them.

Obviously no one here actually READS these things, I tried all of that even did a clean install, even uninstalled all user data and THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE!
Your help is completely useless, All you people do is copy and paste the same thing over and over. If it didn't work the first 20 times it's still not going to work no matter how many times you copy and paste the same fucking link.
You have lost a die hard fan of Firefox, I am switching to another browser.
Unfortunately I tried older versions of Firefox and had to go all the way back to Firefox 4 and now the problem is fixed.

  • Options set to remember history, but Firefox won'e save

Firefox won't save my browsing history even though the options privacy setting is set to remember history

    History and cookies can be removed or not recorded several ways;
    * 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
    * 2) Privacy settings<br>(Type '''about:preferences#privacy'''<enter> in the address bar.)
    * 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
    * 4) Mal-ware.

  • Firefox won't save images or web pages, even after upgrading, reinstalling and resetting... How do I fix this?

A couple upgrades ago, I noticed that Firefox wouldn't boot properly. According to "Task Mgr.", it would load partially with a "*32" after it's name in the listing, but not enough to display a window on screen. After ending the process, and restarting the program again it would usually boot fully. (not always, but usually) The "*32" confuses me as I run a 64bit Windows 7 system and during installation I was sure that I saw mention of a 64bit program being installed. Apparently, after the last upgrade, that issue was resolved; but Task Mgr. still lists the program with a "*32" after it.
The issue now at hand is that Firefox won't save images online or save web pages. I'll right-click and select "save image as" or "save page as" and... nothing. No box appears prompting me to name a file or designate a location to save that file to. Nor does anything happen when I use the "File" menu for the same function either. This is, to say the least, is very frustrating. There may be other things not functioning that I'm not currently aware of, but I haven't been able to or had time to do a complete check of the functionality of the program. I've never had issues of any significance with Firefox in the past. It's always been very reliable for me, so I'm hoping there's a relatively quick fix that I simply haven't been made aware of yet...
Thank you for your suggestions and time looking into this matter...

It probably will take a little time to work through this troubleshooting article, but hopefully you will get a complete solution: [[What to do if you can't download or save files]].
Regarding the *32, I see the same thing on Win 7 Pro x64. No worries. Firefox for Windows is compiled only as a 32-bit application.

  • Firefox won't save my login ID's or PW's even with it set to.

Every time I close out of Firefox, all websites (except Yahoo) that I choose to retain my login ID and password do not. When I check the page info it indicates that I'd never been to the site but also shows the retain password check box is selected.

    * Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
    * You need an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep that cookie, especially for secure websites and if you let cookies expire when Firefox closes
    * Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and password exceptions.
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file <i>cookies.sqlite</i> that stores the cookies is corrupted.<br />
Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> and <b>cookies.txt</b>, if they exist, in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

  • Firefox will not save my Connections settings, so opens on manual proxy every time, rather than No Proxy?

I'm using Firefox 4.01 and it will not save my connections settings when I set them to "No Proxy" keeps defaulting to manual therefore it wont load any pages until I change it to "No Proxy" which I have to do every time I open firefox.

  • Firefox won't save my Yahoo mail passwords, but Explorer will.

Firefox used to save passwords for yahoo Mail, but lately does not seem to be working. I have 2 mail accounts and passwords with Yahoo. I have read through and clicked all the things about allowing passwords to be saved but nothing is working. I do not have this problem with Explorer. If this is just something that Yahoo has done to shut out Firefox then so be it, but if there is something that can be done I would appreciate the help.
I read through other Q&A's on this, looks like a big problem all over, but many of the so-called solutions about bookmarks, etc I can't understand what to do. Many say "solved" but I do not see any solution.

I do not know the answer, I asked on a Yahoo forum last week. I did try a bookmarklet. I did see another computer able to save passwords. Neither were my computers and the computers used GoogleChrome. I suspect Yahoo may have upped security at some stage. I do not have a Yahoo account myself. I also noted GoogleChrome does not use a master password so all passwords are visible.
I comment as an edit because an unanswerd question will get a faster solution. I will move this to a separate answer once someone else answers.

I guess in fact it may be Google Chrome that blocks the bookmarklet action. Not Yahoo.

  • SAVING ISSUES!!! Firefox won't save passwords, won't ask to save them. I've used this for 2 years +. I know where the settings are. New comp, Windows 7, Ffx 4. Prompted to save the password 5 times and stopped

The settings are all correct. New machine. Only has the operating system and Firefox. No conflicting programs. It did 5 then stopped. Nothing has been added or changed since downloading FF.

Same issue here. I am '''NOT '''running in Private Browsing mode.
This may be an issue related to other add-ons, or not. I tried the remember-password bookmarklet with one site and it Worked! But when I looked in the saved passwords, the new userid and password were not there. I waited a few minutes and looked again, and mysteriously, it was there. Perhaps a caching issue. Exceptions box is empty.
I think this in an important issue that must be tracked and not assumed is always an operator-error.

  • Firefox isn't saving my privacy (cookies) settings

So, I'm trying to get stuff off of mod the sims, and it tells me to check my browsers cookies, so I do, and I change it, but the changes don't stay, also firefox isn't keeping me logged in to websites when I tell it to remember me.

  • Firefox won't save passwords; reminder option does not come up... on two different PCs in two different homes.

Both PCs: XP PRO SP3; Seagate Barracuda HDs, routine environment for both, no games, Microsoft Office, Quicken, stuff like that. One is an ABIT 2.2 GHz clone; other is Compaq EVO 1.7GHz DT.... boring, boring, boring but both 3.50+ FF installations do same thing - Won't offer to save logons and PWs. Have done ALL, repeat ALL the usual TOOLS|OPTIONS stuff. Nothing, NADA, ZIP. Please help - suspect registry? - ABSOLUTELY!

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in [[Private Browsing]] mode
    * In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like visited links are disabled and not showing
    * You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed

  • Firefox won't save photos as jpegs, rather it saves as firefox docs

When I right click a photo and choose "save as image as", Firefox saves the image as a Firefox document, not a jpeg as it used to.
I can, however, save the photo as a jpeg if I add ".jpg" to the photo's file name prior to saving it, which becomes burdensome if saving many photos.
Any ideas how to make Firefox save photos as jpeg files by default?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Firefox won't save my homepage no matter what I try. Help!

I have done everything it says in the troubleshooting helps, but nothing works. Everytime I save my homepage, close Firefox and reopen it, my homepage is reset to searchqu.com/406.

    Hi zeemaster,
You could try using the restore to default option in the ''Tools > Options > General'' setting for your homepage. It should clear out any strangeness. Then you can set your homepage to whatever you like. If that doesn't work, you could take a look at [[Preferences are not saved]].
I don't know for sure, but it sounds like you might have been hit with some malware. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Is%20my%20Firefox%20problem%20a%20result%20of%20malware?s=malware&r=0&as=s#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware This article] will show you how to address it.

  • I deleted my facebook password from firefox, now firefox won't save my new password.

I have the box checked to save all passwords by firefox, but it isn't saving them.

When you delete your password, the site often gets added to the exceptions, for some reason. I had this issue when I just deleted one of my gmail passwords to update it. It's a quick fix, if this is the issue.
Go to Preferences, Security, Exceptions, and make sure that, in this case, facebook.com isn't added to the exceptions.
    Hope this helps!

  • Firefox won't save changes I make to the applications actions panel. Specifically, changing pdf files to open in Firefox

If I change the option to "Use Adobe acrobat in Firefox", the next time I open Firefox, it will have reverted its setting back to "Use adobe Acrobat 7.0"

Using "System Restore" can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored (only files in a white-list), so be cautious with using System Restore.<br />
You need to (re)install software that was affected.<br />
Remove the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\) before reinstalling a freshly downloaded Firefox copy to do a clean install.
You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:
    *Firefox 11.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

When I am doing my internet banking I need to have the setting option for 'Open new window in a new Tab instead' Un-checked (disabled).
