Firefox won't start after an update. Firefox help says check virtualization settings. What is virtualization settings and where do you check them and for what? I have Windows XP

Firefox won't start after downloading update. I've reinstalled Firefox, still won't start. Help says check virtualization settings. What and where are virtualization settings? I have Windows XP.

This might be Zone Alarm since it provides virtualization. Please try the instructions to turn off virtualization in the following support question

  • Firefox will not start after interrupted update to 5.0

    Lenovo x200 | Windows 7 32bit | Firefox 5.0
I was updating Firefox from version 3.6 (I think) to 5.0. Simultaneously I had done a update on Windows that seemed to have stopped. The update of Firefox had also come to a stop. As I remember it the installation was complete, and I was attempting to start the program, when Firefox was checking compatibility with installed plug-ins and so forth.
The Windows updates installed fine afterwards but after several reinstalls of Firefox, I still can't seem to get it to start.
There is no error message or notification at all when trying to start Firefox.
One processes is created, staying steady at 50% CPU and 26 404 K memory.
If i try to open another instance of Firefox I get a process that takes 0% CPU and about 1 844 K memory.
    Summary:
Firefox fails to start after interrupted update to 5.0 from 3.6.
    There is no error message.
Firefox never starts (and the process never shuts down), just shows in the Task Manager under Processes steady at 50% CPU and about 26 000 K memory (I've seen it do this for at least 20 minutes, before terminating it).

Thanks kenton. But now pop-up says beta 5.
The ''real issue'' is what is going on. On one machine the update process works, but on my other machine it does not.
The machines are identical IBM T60s with Windows XP.
This is a real mystery, as well as being annoying.
A clue or suggestion any one?

I do not see much about coloum 14, but I am guessing this file is stored somewhere and its corrupt. Update.xul suggests that it is the update file. Do you still have this in your downloads folder? There are two places for update and for a clean reinstall:
[http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/] in a private window will give you a new install or you can choose from here: [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/]
This is what the file should look like; [http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/log/7a2edc5171e6/toolkit/mozapps/extensions/content/update.xul] If you can copy and paste that file from a working browser we can see the issue, but it will just look the same as the error.
if you can replace the contents of the file locally with what it should look like it will fix the error, but who knows if there are other errors. May be best to delete the updater and save all the profile folder contents.

  • Firefox won't start after installing an update from Apple - what to do?

I am not computer savvy. When I installed a recent update from Apple on my Mac. Firefox won't open. Safari wouldn't either, but an Apple tech led me through steps to fix it. He didn't know what to try for Firefox.

Then a  clear CMOS would be the next logical troubleshooting step.
Here is  a link to your motherboard specifications.
The information on clearing CMOS is at the bottom of the document.
This is usually the last step before giving up on a motherboard.
The problem you are facing is motherboard hardware firmware related.

  • Firefox won't start after download and update

I have win 7. I uninstalled Firefox and downloaded it again.

Then I uninstalled all Mozilla files and then I reinstalled Mozilla 29.0.1 and
now my Firefox Mozilla is working fine with all info in my profile intact.

  • FireFox won't start after upgrading

This morning I upgraded to FireFox 5.0, when it was done installing the upgrade the last window had the option to start FireFox on completion, I left this option checked but after clicking the "Finish" button nothing happened so I clicked the new FF icon on my desktop. Still nothing. I opened Task Manager and nothing was listed on the "Applications" tab but when I clicked on the "Processes" tab there were several instances of FF running so I selected each one and clicked the "End Process" button which worked to exit all but one of them. No matter what I tried it would not terminate that one instance of FF so I shut down the computer. After firing up the computer I tried re-running the FF install app but it kept telling me that I had to exit FF before it could run, I looked in Windows Task Manager again and there was FF listed under "Processes". I restarted the computer to get rid of the running FF and then downloaded the FF file again, but am getting the same results. It just won't start (and it won't even give an error message)! I surfed the Web and found info stating that you could SHIFT click the FF icon to open it in Safe Mode, but that didn't happen either. Any ideas????

it does not work even in windows safe mode with networking. same issue. if i wait for some time firefox comes but in not responding mode. then a pop shows up with - script: chrome//browser/content/tabbrowser.xml 2123 .

  • Firefox crashes on start after last update

After the most recent automatic update Firefox crashes each time I start it. Have deinstalled it, downloaded fresh Installation files, installed these - still crashes.

hello markusrex, this seems to be fairly prolific startup crash at the moment. other affected users have reported that it's solvable through a clean reinstall:
    # please try to uninstall firefox from the system control panel.
    # then go to the firefox program folder (usually located at ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox'') - delete the whole firefox program folder manually
    # try reinstalling the browser with a fresh copy from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

  • Firefox won't start after upgrade, it appears on the windows task manager but closing the firefox.exe doesn't help

I upgraded to firefox 4 and it asked me to restart the system, since then it stopped working. it just won't open. I have windows xp and when I click on the firefox icon I see firefox.exe in the windows task manager under 'processes' I tried ending the task but it wont help. i also tried removing and reinstalling.. didn't help either :( I also checked if Kaspersky might be blocking it but it isn't

The only thing that worked for me was installing an older version (3.6) and it started working fine... I dont even want to try upgrading it to 4 again..

  • Firefox won't start after 18.0.1 upgrade

I have upgraded to the latest version and then two days later, The mozilla Crash reporter opens and it won't start. Nothing happens when I press details.
I can't run it safe mode. The same thing happens.
I uninstalled and re-installed and same thing.
I then uninstalled rebooted and re-installed V16. That was then ok for a few days then same thing happened.
So I unintstalled rebooted and on went V15 which worked for about 8 hours. However I can't get any version to work now. The Crash Reporter pops up whatever version I have.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Firefox won't open after last update on a Snow Leopard Macbook Pro

    Hi there,
I just updated Firefox and it now bounces in the dock and then stops bouncing and the little dot below disappears. I've tried restarting the machine and downloading Firefox again. There's no error message given. Does anyone have any ideas ?
    Thanks,

  • Firefox won't boot after latest update.

No method of booting Firefox seems to do anything. If I try reinstalling or removing Firefox, I get a message "must close Firefox to continue" even though Firefox is not running. Rebooting machine and going right to control panel/remove software doesn't help. I still get the message. Running XP pro

  • Apps won't start after latest update?

    Hello,
I'm on an older 2006 iMac (the one without the black border) and I installed the latest update last night. Now I can't get Firefox, Safari, Mail or apps working properly. When I try to start an app it bounces up and down and then I can't remember what it says but it won't start. Any ideas how to fix this? I'm thinking of downloading Firefox and Safari on my sister's computer and then transferring them via my memory stick.
I also tried a restart. Last night I just shut it down and walked away and figured I'd deal with it when I get home from work today.

Hi, first I hope you have your important stuff backed up!!?
I would & always do Repair Permissions Before & after Updates, so I would try the RP ..
Then I would go the SMC route, specific for your model..
If after that you still have "issues" You may need to go the Archive & Install route..

  • Firefox won't start can't find firefox.exe in processes

I recently was having problems with my computer where it would crash and I had to do a system restore. I am now not able to open firefox, I found this page explaining how to fix the problem:http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+will+not+start?s=icon+won%27t+open&as=s The solution says to delete the process of firefox.exe in the task manager, however I can't find this process.
