Firefox wont open a new tab

firefox won't open a new tab on my browser- the option is there, but when I press it nothing happens? I have checked all my options but can't find anything wrong?

hello, it looks like you're running a very outdated version of firefox & old plugins - this is a grave security risk, since there have been dozens of critical vulnerabilities fixed since firefox 3.6 was released (that was over two years ago).
you need to take the following steps as soon as possible:
* download & [[Install Firefox on Windows|install]] the latest version of firefox from getfirefox.com
* check your plugins at https://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/ & update all of those which are out of date
* you might also want to [[Uninstalling toolbars|remove all toolbars]] that you've installed since they can cause problems. in firefox go to tools > addons > extensions and uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar, Conduit Engine, Radio TV 2.1 Community Toolbar & Ask Toolbar. afterwards you might want to run the [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/ searchreset extension] to restore the search settings that conduit has overwritten...
* do a full scan of your system with your security software

I can't get Firefox to open a new tab each time I click on a link or favorite. It keeps loading onto the current tab.

I went to Tools>Options>Tabs and entered a check mark next to the first entry, "Open New Windows in a New Tab Instead" but it still does not open a new tab each time I click on a link or one of my favorites. That option only controls pages that would open in a new window based on the code on the website page you are visiting.
Firefox's default is to open a link or a Bookmark in the currently selected tab.
You have some options to have links and/or Bookmarks open in a new tab:

*CTRL+left-click the link or Bookmark

How do I stop Firefox from opening a new tab when I click a link or navigation button (such as "home") instead of redirecting using the currently open tab?

Any time I click on a link within a page, such as the "home" link in Facebook, or the various links on the Mozilla page that I needed to follow to get to this screen, Firefox opens a new tab instead of redirecting using the tab I'm on. Also, Firefox doesn't go to the new tab, it just opens it. So if I want to actually go to the page I've just clicked on, I have to then also find and click on the new tab that just opened.

Can't get Firefox to open a new tab as my homepage or a specific url. Alwatys get 'The address isn't valid'

When opening a new tab, I keep getting 'The Address isn't valid'. Went through all the fixes given in previous threads, changing the url in about:config, running Firefox in safe mode (problem still exists with plugins disabled) resetting Firefox, changed newtab settings to about:home etc, restarted, deleted cookies. Nothing seems to work. Some other program seems to be overriding the Firefox settings. May be a virus. I am using the latest McAfee software.
I once had an add-on that brought up thumbnails with a new tab but I removed that a while back.
On the right hand side search bar of firefox I can see that Bing is one of the dropdown search engine choices not that it should make a difference but I thougth they were sometimes a bit aggresive.
Anyhow, would love to know if there is a solution as it's making me suspicious of having an undetected visus or hijacking.

In the mean time I installed a plug-in that does this for me. I used My Homepage 1.2 and it's done the business.
Still don't know what was causing the problem. (And it wasn't a typo, I checked and copied and pasted urls from other locations...)

In Snow Leopard, I had somehow set the two finger tap to open a new tab either from a link on a page or from my bookmarks bar, without having to select "Open a new tab" from the context menu. I recently upgraded to Lion and I can't remember how I set this feature-- or is it just not available anymore?

There is a plugin for this and you can configure it as shown in the attached screen to open all links from the web page in a new tab by just clicking on it and not having to follow the native steps

I have selected "never remember my history" but everytime I start firefox and open a new tab, websites I visited the previous day are all displayed there.

Under Options I have selected "Firefox will never remember my history." Nevertheless, even after I have closed my browser and restarted my computer, Firefox does remember my browsing history. If I "clear all current history" it gets wiped out, but all browsing after that is remembered and is visible in "show all history" and when I open a new tab and there is a tiled display of previous websites visited. Is it not enough to say "never remember history?" Is there something else I need to do to not have this information saved?
P.S. I do have Firefox sync and one other device, a smart phone. Do I have to adjust settings in the browser on that? It doesn't seem to offer the same options.

That is weird as you seem to be running Firefox in Private Browsing mode:

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

I cant force firefox to open a new tab instead it opens a window

i am having a problem whereby even if i right click "open in new tab" it opens a new window.
I`ve tried tools, open new window as a tab... no change. I`ve tried the restriction thing (going into the config for firefox and setting the restiction to zero... seen on a similar question i read here) and no change
any ideas please? its only been happening for about a few days/week

Ive just installed firefox 5, and when i open a new tab, it open with a blank page. My previous version of firefox opened with my most visited pages as thumbnails. Can i revert to this setup, or can i set firefox 5 to open a new tab with a specified web page e.g google news...?

When I visit a URL, Firefox loads that page and also opens a new tab with a URL based on some word in the original page. E.g., www.tripadvisor.com url opened in a new tab. Is this a feature I can turn off?
E.g., I searched for "shovel" in the location bar. A list of results was presented. The first one was as follows. When I clicked on that link, the Amazon.com page with a bunch of shovels opened, as well as another tab with the home page of Amazon.com.

Wont open a new tab.. Im clicking on the + but nothing happens

So I have a Dell XPS L702X laptop (win7.64) and a Microsoft surface pro both running the same version of FF. Same bookmarks and everything. I went through all the setting on both and compared all. Set them both to be exactly the same. But on my laptop (since the latest update) I cant open a new tab by clicking on the + or by using ctrl+shift+P. Nothing works. Its like the feature has been shut off but the + is still here and it even highlights when I hover my cursor over it. SO next I completely uninstalled FF and reinstalled the latest again. But its still not working. Oh and btw it works fine on my surface and other computers.

This can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Community Toolbar extension have recently been reported to cause such an issue.

My Safari app wont open a new tab and crashes if I try, I've tried closing all apps and reopening. Its a new ipad air and only started doing this after I synched with itunes.

I have a new iPad Air. Since I synched it with my itunes account - all my details have been uploaded which is great but Safari will only work with one page open. If I try to open a new Tab it crashes. I have tried turning it off and on again. I tried closing all my apps that were open - including Safari and opening it again. Not sure what else to try.

2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo
