Firefox wont run says pc needs to restart to complete installation, it never does- same message when i try to uninstall

firefox will not open. when I try to uninstall it I get a message that says
PC needs to restart to complete previous firefox installation
but when I reboot I get the same message, I can not access Firefox in any manner

Glad it helped, <br>It probably would have been better to get to the root cause of the problem but if it is working again that is the important thing.
You could have problems at some later date, and one of the most important things is likely to be your collection of bookmarks. It will be worthwhile regularly making manual backups of those, and keeping them somewhere safe outside of the main firefox folders, if you ever need to do a full uninstall and reinstall, including deletion of old firefox data at least you will then be able to reinstate bookmarks. see [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]]
As an example of what can easily go wrong, and an add-on recommended by another poster see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/787020 thread] ''"I deleted by mistake bookmarks by uninstalling the previous version of Firefox beta 4.011b... Is there anyway to recover them?" ''
leading to http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/#bb as a method of automatically backing up bookmarks and profile information.

When I try to update Firefox it repeatedly says Firefox must be closed to proceed with install even tho Firefox is closed. I get the same message when I try to uninstall the existing version of Firefox. How do I close Firefox??? The same thing happens when I try to update other programs. When a program is off what else do I have to do to turn it off??

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have other problems with updating to update then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Firefox will no longer play videos and keeps telling me to download the latest version of Adobe Flashplayer which I have done 5 times but still get the same message when I try to play videos. I can play videos on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome .

Recently when I try to play a video on Firefox I get the same message that I need to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. At least 5 times I have downloaded Adobe Flash Player 11 Active X and Adobe Flash Player Plugin 64 bit. Problem is that even though I have the latest version I still get the same message when I try to watch videos on Firefox. The frustrating thing is I can watch videos on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome as well as on Safari. How does that make sense?
Today, I upgraded to Firefox 10.0.2 (x86eng-us) hoping that would enable me to watch video on Firefox but it made no difference either. I would rather use Firefox as my default browser but if I can't get help so I can view video on it I will be forced to use another browser.

  • I am not able to install firefox as it says I need to restart my computer to update an older version

I was cleaning up my laptop b/c it was running too slow and I uninstalled firefox with the plan of reinstalling it after I had gotten rid of everything I wanted to get rid of. Now when I try to reinstall it I am told I have an older version which needs to be updated and I should restart my computer to make that happen. Restarted computer 5 times and have gotten nowhere. I don't believe I have an older version on my computer as I pretty much deleted every single thing I ever downloaded or saved (on the plus side my computer is running much faster). Please help.

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • I keep getting a message that says HD disc is full.   However, the status shows I have plenty of memory remaining.  I get the same message when I try to save or email it.  Any suggestions?

When I try to save or email a document, I get a message that "the disc is full trying to write to MAC HD.  free some space on this drive, or save the document to another disc."  I can't figure out how to save to another disc.  And, when I check the available memory, my computer has  1 GB of available memory.  I closed all programs and deleted the "trash" items.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Disk space and memory are two different things.
    This is system memory (RAM):
    This is disk space:
If your startup disk is full there will be very little green in the above pie chart. You need to erase items from your startup volume for OS X to have space to work.
OS X Lion: Remove files and folders from your computer
    Mountain Lion is the same.
Don't neglect to look for potentially deleted email messages, iPhoto items or iMovie clips that may have been moved to their own Trash. These must be "emptied" separately.

    Help

The iMacs covered in this forum were made before 2006 and have PowerPC processors. Those processors cannot support any higher Mac OS than 10.5.8.
If the bad forum lableing has led you here by mistake and you may have a newr processor, let's verify your machine's family. Please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu. You will get a window like this:
Note the "Processor line (second red arrow):
<> If is includes the word "Intel" as above, you can upgrade to 10.6.x by purchasing a US$20 disk from Apple
<> If it includes the word "PowerPC" you can upgrade no higher than OS 10.5.8.
If you have an Intel iMac, let us know and I can get you moved to that forum--it's more active. Also, here is the web link for ordering 10.6 if you have an Intel iMac:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Newer iMacs can but updated farther, but require 10.6.6 minimum to have access to the App Store where upgrades are now delivered. If you have an Intel iMac, we will need to get more info to see exactly how far you can upgrade. That can wait, though.

  • I downloaded 3.6. It says must be re-booted, I re-boot and get the same message when it comes back.

I downloaded Firefox 3.6. It said to reboot computer, and clicked yes. It rebooted, and the icon that appears brings up the same box that says "needs to be rebooted"
I tied to uninstall and even get that prompt there as well.

There are various causes for this error, see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]] for details.

  • When upgrading iTunes I get an error that says can't find iTunes.msi. I get the same error when I try to uninstall itunes. I am using XP

How do I find iTunes, msi to upgrade or uninstall itunes?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • When I turn off my mini, and at other random times, i get a message saying I need to restart my computer

When I turn off my mini, and at other random times, i get a simple message that says I need to restart my computer.  any suggestions?

The message to restart your computer, in multiple languages, is a kernel panic. This is usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory being the leading cause.
You might want to run the Apple hardware test, which is on the original gray-faced OS X disks that came with the mini. FInd the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label, insert and reboot holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. You can also download Rember from http://kelleycomputing.net/rember/ if you want to really test the memory. Set it up and let it run over night.
See this kernel panic FAQs for other ideas: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

I was having the same problem, so I deleted 'firefox.exe.moz-upgrade' from 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox' directory, as recommended. Now it no longer says it needs a restart to complete a previous installation. It says it needs a restart to complete a previous uninstall. What do I do now? Help!
