Firefox wrecked the cookie functions in Safari

I'm reporting a bug that started after setting the cookies option in Firefox to "block all". There was no real reason to do this I was just testing the new toolbar gizmo I'd gotten from somewhere. I turned it back on but then...
Now neither Safari or Firefox can access my Amazon.com cart or perform cookie based security at my email provider.
I've tried deleting the plist files for both and rebooting and ...
Any ideas?
Regards,
Dave

There was no real reason to do this
Then why did you do it?
I was just testing the new toolbar gizmo I'd gotten from somewhere.
What is the exact name of this "toolbar gizmo" and what is it supposed to do?
Now neither Safari or Firefox can access my Amazon.com cart or perform cookie based security at my email provider.
That's not any indication of a bug.
I've tried deleting the plist files for both and rebooting and ...
Doing that was a waste of time, since it would have no effect on any cookies.
We need a lot more details if you want help for this problem. But until there is firm, reproducible evidence of a bug in Safari or Firefox, you should stop making that assumption.

• Is there a problem with the cookie settings in Safari 6?

Hoping someone can help me... I run a Shopify ecommerce store and am getting inundated with Safari customers complaining about their shopping carts being emptied before they have completed their shopping.  Shopify have washed their hands of the problem, claiming that it is the cookie settings in Safari.  This has never happened before (I have Safari 5 on my Mac and it works perfectly fine). Shopify has told me I need to tell all my customers to change their cookie settings which is mission impossible - most of them wouldn't even know what cookies are let alone be willing to start playing around with their settings.  And what about all the customers I'm losing who aren't complaining to me?  Those who are just getting peeved off with my webstore not working and shopping elsewhere? Please tell me this is a bug that Safari are working on?  I'm pretty lost as to what I can do to fix the problem?

Hi Andy, I do have my own domain name - organicexpress.co.nz
I can't see any links for yoursitename.myshopify.com/somepage though, they seem to all be organicexpress.co.nz/somepage however when I first set up my shopify site it was organic-express.myshopify.com. I thought it might be the cart page still set at the shopify domain but it doesn't seem to be.
The thing that is puzzling me most is that this problem only began happening about 4-5 weeks ago.  Prior to that, my regular customers who use Safari weren't having any problems.  Another thing too, sometimes it does work - perhaps if the customer completes their order under a certain time frame or perhaps only purchases a few items?  Most of my customers buy 15+ items per order.

• Is there any way to turn off the download function in safari offline reading list?

Is there any way to turn off the download function in safari offline reading list?

Don't think so.  The point of the offline reading list is to allow you to read it later without going online.  It has to download the content to make this possible.

• After update to Firefox 8, the pause function on videos no longer works

I updated both my desktop and laptop to Firefox 8.
The laptop is a Toshiba and it's OS is Win 7 with Kapersky AV. The laptop has no problems.
When using Firefox on the desktop, which is a clone, with Win XP as the OS, and Norton AV, all up to date, the pause function on videos often does not work.
I have been able to play the same videos on this desktop computer using IE 8 and pause them with no problem.
I need to have the pause function work, because I am interrupted a lot, and it can take me 3 hrs. to watch a one hour video due to that.
Can anyone help? If not, I'll just have to use IE, though I much prefer Firefox. Thanks.

The Statusbar is gone and the "lock" with it, as of Firefox 4.0. Security information about a web page is shown by the Site Identity Button.<br />
The old padlock could give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site and only showed that there is a secure connection that didn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. The Site Identity Button was introduced in Firefox 3.0 to show more complete "identity" information for HTTPS web pages. <br />

• Disabling the 'reset' function in Safari

I wish to disable the "Reset Sarfari" function (in the pull down menu under Safari Version 2.0.4). Is this possible??
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

yep
I think most any safari menu item can be removed by modifying the ( from memory ) - mainmenu.nib file within the safari application package
you'd have to do this for each copy of Safari of course & yes, it is fiddling with the application package ( Sorry Barry....)
Anyway, I've done it before but months & months ago & the details are hazy atm, but if you're interested, drop me an email & I'll play around some.

• How can I disable the Download function of safari?

since I am using the iGetter to download files from internet and I did integrate iGetter into safari. but sometimes when i download some files the download of safari automatically pop up and start downloading. that's annoying me. can i disable this function.
PS: what is the use of automator in Leopard OS and how to use it effectively?
thx

Hi
Some sites are coded by developers in such a way that 3rd party download accelerators such as iGetter or Speed Download are ignored, downloading the file directly through a browser's download mechanism. Those are usually coded as a "forced download" rather than a stream download. I don't know of a particular work-around. Not using iGetter I don't know what its capabilities are (I use Speed Download), however, possibly you might see the download file listed in the Activity Window (Command/Option/A) where you could copy it (Command/C), then paste it into iGetters download window (I know I can do this in SpeedDownload).
In any event, you won't be able to preempt or anticipate the direction the download will go until the process starts.
Best place to ask questions about Automator is the Leopard Automator forum.

• What happened to the mailto function in Safari 6?

Here's my code:
<A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>
When you click on the link, rather than the user being directed to a new session in their email app with the email address in the "to" field, this just opens up a new page in Safari, which of course doesn't help anybody.
I've poked around the internet and brought this up in different forums and have yet to come up with a bottom line.
I've never had this problem before prior to installing Mountain Lion and being introduced to Safari 6. What do I have to do with my code to make it compatible with Safari 6?

BTW: This is the page that inspired all of this mess: http://newhopeforyou.com/small_group_display.php?class_id=31
I don't know what the problem could be, but I can trace it back to the installation of Mountain Lion and Safari 6. Both great pieces of technology, but this email thing is something I've got to figure out!

When I go to post on a google blog and it asks me to sign in, I get a message that says that my cookies fuctionality is turned off, but when I go to firefox, to preferences and privacy, "accept cookies from sites until they expire" is checked. I don't understand why I am getting this google message which is preventing me from posting, as it seems that the cookies functionality is properly turned on.

• FireFox 19.02 Cookie Handling Changes prevent users from blocking or allowing cookies?

Prior to 19.0.2, I could specifically decide exactly how a site deposited cookies on my machine. When I visited a 'new' site, FireFox sprung open a pop-up window that allowed me to choose "Block", "Allow for Session" or "Allow". That doesn't appear anymore.
Also, for at least one site, FireFox won't adhere to my chosen handling preference: "Twitter dot com" will not accept the "Allow For Session" designator. I've NEVER allowed any site to set cookies past session's end, and prior to 19.0.2 Twitter had the "Allow for Session" designation. Now, however, Twitter FORCES FireFox to "ALLOW" cookies; when I manually enter "Allow for session" Firefox won't take it! FireFox immediately changes that to "ALLOW" status.
Why was the very nice pop-up cookie handling routine disabled in FireFox 19.0.2, and is there any way to get it back? This new FireFox is making me unhappy.

Thanks!
The Big Question remains:
Why did FireFox change the Cookie handling routine? I want my decision-making pop-up Cookie-handling box back!
"Allow This Site to Set Cookies?" [Click Option]
"Block" "Allow" "Allow for Session"
Also, a tiny check box: "Remember this setting"
Taking that away? Bad form, FireFox!

• I can't use the iCloud feature on Safari with Mountain Lion.

I updated to Mountain Lion but my iPad 3rd gen and my iPhone 4S will not update or use the iCloud function in Safari. It says it works on my computer, but the icon is not on my IOS devices. In the IOS 6 update info it says that iCloud web page sharing between devices would come out in fall, so why do I have it on my
computer then? If it is supposed to work just give me a sollution please, I just want it to work.
PS. My IOS devices says they are already up to date.
Thanks!

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has not been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

• We have an iMac desktop computer and Firefox is opened but not functioning. Safari works, so it isn't the computer's fault. How can we fix Firefox?

Can we talk to a tech support person?

Billweins,
What you could try to do is (if not done yet) :
# Uninstall Firefox
#Download Firefox most recent version from Mozilla
#Re-install Firefox.
If the error persists, I would tell you to follow these steps :
We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing when you open it. Please do the following to give us crash IDs that will help us understand more about the crash.
#(OS X 10.6 or previous) Click the Finder icon in the dock. Your home folder will be selected. In the right side of the window, click the Library folder to open it. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.<br>(OS X 10.7 or above) Click the Finder icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the Go menu, hold down the option or alt key and select Library. A window will open containing your Library folder. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
#Open the 5 most recent files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

• Why can't I access the "See more..." section of people's long posts on Facebook? I used to on Firefox and I still can on Safari but no more on Firefox..

When people write a long status update on Facebook, the site shows the first few sentences and then adds a blue hot link. The link says "See more..." and mouse clicking this allows you to see the complete status. It saves space on Facebook.
I always accessed this feature on Firefox but since the last update it isn't working. I went to Safari and the blue linking text functions perfectly. Only on Firefox is it disabled. Clicking the link does nothing.
I checked preferences in Firefox but could find nothing that would cause this to happen.
Please tell me how to make the link functional again.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the Clear now button.
Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.
Also try the following if the above did not solve your issue;
Try the Firefox Safe Mode to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.
If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.

• Form with six field types. Firefox sends only the first type. Safari sends all.

I use Ancestry.com. The 'advanced search' form has six data types - name, location, family member, etc, which are 'and'ed together. Starting about two weeks ago, the search function returned data from only the first data type, that is, if name and location are filled in, only name is returned; if location and family member are filled in, only location is returned. I am using a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. Firefox is version 33. Safari works without a problem but I prefer Firefox.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:<br>

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
