Firefox "X" close and "_" minimize and Resize become unusable
After running for a few minutes and visiting several web sites, in Firefox ver 3.6.13 the "X" close and "_" minimize and Resize buttons on the top right of the browser window become locked and unresponsive. this has just started recently. I've tried an overlay re-install with no effect. Any fix ideas would be appreciated.
This happens to me too. It used to happen once in a while, probably due to hibernating and leaving firefox open for long periods or with too many tabs. Restarting the browser solves the problem.
But after updating to 3.6.13 and some extensions/addons, it happens almost every time. The minimize, resize, close buttons do not work. I can still switch between the tabs I have open and make new tabs, but the title bar keeps the title of the last tab I was on when it froze. When smaller frames are open, such as download box or save as box, those freezes and can't be close either.
If I minimize through "show desktop," the window doesn't open up again.

When I am on the computer or even when I am not.The computer will shut down and restart.I installed Firefox 2 days ago.
The one thing that is locking up fire fox is the plug ins. You have to check to see if a plug in is locking up firefox first of all.
To see the processes press : CTRL+ALT+DEL. then click the tab marked "Processes" Then look for Fire Fox and click on it. Click the Yes button when the warning box show up.
Then do the say for "Plug-in Container" I believe that is called.
this is because all ads are now flash ads or video ads. They lock my computer up all the time.
When the CTRL+ALT+DEL are pressed. Keep this minimized and you can see if your computer is running at 100% memory near the clock. If the box is totally green, you are running a lot of programs on your system. Check the processes and find out what is not needed. Also watch your virtual memory. Rule of thumb is 1.5x total memory.
Then now it would be able to shut down the computer the right way.
Hope this helps you out. -
I have been using FF for a while now. My main computer was WinXP-32, though I recently bought a new laptop with Win7-64 installed. This problem was never experienced on my WinXP machine.
Brief description of problem:
After a time of having FF up and running, the minimize/maximize/restore/close buttons in the top-right no longer work as expected and, if not maximised, I cannot move the window around my desktop nor resize the browser window. When clicked, the buttons will
rapidly flash on and off continuously without appearing to perform any noticeable function other than temporarily hogging CPU cycles. I've found that clicking (sometimes double clicking) in the main browser window then mousing over the buttons again seems
to stop them flashing, though does nothing else.
To minimize/maximize/restore/move/close the window(s), I have to right-click on the relevant tab in my taskbar and pick the desired option. Occasionally, however, even this doesn't work and the right-click menu will disappear as soon as I move the mouse
over it after right-clicking. 'Show desktop' is a temporary fix for minimising windows and 'ALT + F4' or 'CTRL + W' for closing windows or tabs. This isn't satisfactory and to move or resize a window, I have to close the window in question (sometimes all other
windows too), reopen it and do what I need to do, though sometimes even this is only a very short fix. If I have to close all the windows, FF will sometimes keep running for a while afterwards, even though no windows are actually open - simply ending the process
via the windows task manager will fix this though is only a work-around, not a fix.
One thing I have noticed is that if I manage to move the browser window (when not maximised), for a short period afterwards I can often resize the window successfully. This is more likely to occur if the browser window is not flush with the edge of my screen
once moved.
I've tried to include as much information as I can - most of which was determined after several minutes/hours of playing around with different scenarios, trying to manually reproduce particular problems or simply through sheer luck of happening to click
in the right place at the right time! I hope there is a reasonably fix for this at some point in the not-too-distant future.
I noticed in some of the threads at another site where people have voiced problems similar to mine, that a link to 'ObjectDock' was discovered in some cases. I do have 'ObjectDock 1.90 Plus' installed on my machine and use it in many ways and so decided
to see if I could find a connection between the two. I have uninstalled, tested, and reinstalled both programs in a multitude of ways, though could find no conclusive correlation between having both bits of software running or installed at the same time and
the problems I am experiencing. In my case, at least, this does not appear to be an answer.
Also, in another thread on this site, someone suggested there might be a link with AVG Anti-Virus Free (I have version 9.0.819) though I've tried uninstalling it and its various add-ons in several different combinations, with no noticeable improvement.
Sorry for such a long question... If you need to know anything more, just let me know!

falseHi Kossa,
You can also check if the issue occurs in
Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
Besides, uninstall it and re-download
a fresh copy of FireFox to check the result. If the issue still exists, create a new user account to see if it occurs.
If the issue persists, you can contact Mozilla Support directly and use Internet Explorer (IE) during the time.

After I close the window/s the report error window pops up . Then the next one which tells me the report was sent. Then the options to go further and so I came here today and Now I have done what you said to do so far. I even updated Acrobat reader and Flash player. I have used Mozilla Firefox for years and never had any trouble like this. This is the way windows behaves on a regular basis and is why I changed to Linux for years. I got this computer a couple years ago and did not have any trouble. Recently I have this to deal with several times every day. I cannot close the window in upper right corner without bringing up more error windows. So I minimize and close at the bottom. It still takes way too long, but it finally closes. I hope this helps you , I don't know what else I could tell you, Thank s for your time.

Missing maximize, minimize and close buttons
I see that people have been having problems with these issues before the finalized FF4, I have the most updated version on my PC. The answers all seem to say it was a problem with beta versions. When I stay online for long periods of time my full screen, minimize and close buttons disappear. I have 2 screens and have found that when I pull a tab to the other screen the buttons reappear with that tab. But all the tabs still on previous screens are still missing. If I pull the whole set of tabs (opened together) I still can not get the buttons to reappear. when I am ready to close all the open tabs at once I use task manager and close down FF4. Right now I see my background screen where the button should be.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.
Click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode or right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press the F11 key.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Why does FireFox open as a very small box in the top l/h corner and i have to resize it every time this only occurs on the initial opening up of F/Fx after boot-up
Open the system menu via Alt+Space and see if you can resize that window.
If that works then close Firefox (File > Exit/Quit) to save that setting.

I am literally stuck in Firefox. Suddenly the window changed to full screen mode, and the title bar and Firefox menu disappeared, along with the close, minimize, and maximize buttons. All I can access are the menu bar and open browser tabs.
I can't even access my dock (on Mac), which usually pops up when I mouse over the bottom of the screen.
So, the only way it seems I can get out of Firefox is to shut down my computer by pressing the power button. Unless there is some keyboard shortcut. I tried command-11 but that just switched between open my browser tabs.
FYI i have no idea what Ubuntu is and don't think I'm using it (that name seems to pop up when I google this problem)
Oh yeah, also I'm using Firefox 3.6.2 because my elderly Mac is running on OSX 10.4.11. Have never had any problems with it before.IN your iTunes library, does the movie appear with a cloud on it for downloading?
is the movie still in the iTunes Store?
iTunes purchases the rights to sell a movie, but those are for a time limit. If the right expires and apple doesn't renew, the movie is no longer available for download and must be saved in your library. I suggest backing up your movies ASAP. Check the store for this movie, perhaps it is still available. -
So my firefox has been running well but when i updated my computer, it stopped working. when i double click the icon, it opens a blank transparent window with only the maximize, minimize and close buttons. you cannot even tell its firefox. it does not display any error messages and installing again does not work.
what is this and how do i fix it?hello nachoz88, [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/940393#answer-377118 from another user] we found out that this might be related to malware active on your pc. please close all firefox windows and try [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|running firefox in safemode]] (by pressing the shift key while you're starting it). in firefox safemode go to firefox > addons > extensions and remove the entry named "Codec v1.0" or any other addons that look suspicious & you have not installed intentionally. afterwards see if you can run firefox normally again...
please also do an in-depth scan of your system with the security software already in place and/or a different tool like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & keep firefox and your plugins up-to-date in order to stay safe on the web.

This just started today. Everything seems fine. I just push the popup off to the side and continue to use the browser. If I were to click on the, "Send Error Report" or the "Don't Send" buttons then Firefox just closes!
Strangest thing yet, trying to figure it out!
Oh, I tried the reboot without add-ons! Even did the reinstall, still the same???Just got back online, still working on things, BUT ???
I went back and dumped Norton's which I get for free from Comcast. I downloaded the AVG scanner. Went through all the bells & whistles and things seem ok ???? But I haven't done the reboot yet, so will do that soon. But I wanted to drop a line here and let you all know what is happening.
And Thanks Fred, the funny thing was it did seem to have something to do with their update??? I do like Norton's but my son uses this AVG and he said it was better, lol!!! But again, everyone has their favorite!
Mine is Norton's so once I confirm that everything is good, I'm going to try redoing Norton's and I'll try your suggestions, if they don't fix it!!
Thanks again, and will let you know if this is the fixed!!! -

Firefox was working well. One day I logged on to use Firefox and was prompted to update my version which I did. After or during the update the following message was given on the screen "firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close". It closed and now every time I click on the firefox icon I get the same message from Microsoft. That is all the information I get. Each time I go to open Firefox I get the same message. There is an error message attached to the Microsoft dialog box, but I don't understand what it means.
I have sent it to Microsoft but no reply.Make sure that you aren't running Firefox in some compatibility mode (e.g. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_%28software%29 Rosetta]).

I had 41 tabs open in about six groups over the last year and a half and I just close them and exited Firefox. Is there any way to get them back?
Also, is there any way to save a group or an open session and then restore it later?History menu, if it was destroyed in the last session
then use "Restore Previous session:" and then restore all windows also from the history menu.
If done in this session try the restore all windows under the history menu. -

Firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
I have a laptop that runs on Windows XP SP3. I download and install Firefox 13.0. It was working. I turned off the laptop, then turned it on some time later. Whenever I click Firefox, the error message appears, however, I can still use Firefox. Firefox will close if I click "close" in the error message. The only way I can browse the web using Firefox is to drag the error message off screen and then continue on my work.
I'm sure no one would like an error message just hanging around off screen. I researched for a solution but it seems none of it work.
1 - "It might be a problem with the plugins/add-ons." I turned off all my plugins/add-ons, restarted Firefox, and I still got the error message.
2 - "Try Firefox in safe mode." I did and I still got the error message.
3 - "It might be malware." I did a full scan using Avast and Advanced SystemCare Pro. Still got the error message.
4 - "Do a reinstall." I still got the error message
I've tried everything with no results.'

Firefox won't close completely, CTL+N and hyperlinks don't work
After many years of loving Firefox, lately it is causing me nothing but headaches. If I close Firefox, it doesn't close completely and continues running in the background. It often hangs and sucks so much CPU (upwards of 78%) that my entire system virtually locks up. I can't open a new Firefox window, ... regardless of whether I try from the menu bar or by using CTL+N. Hyperlinks on web pages won't work unless I right click and select "Open in a new tab."
I have tried disabling all of my add-ins. I am using the default theme. I have tried reinstalling Firefox, and yet still have the same problems. This has gotten way beyond being frustrating. I am about ready to completely uninstall Firefox and go back to the very much dreaded IE, so you know I must be desperate. If anyone can help I will be immensely appreciative.I have that problem too. Actually, I've had that problem with Firefox 3.6.15.
When I close Firefox after, for example YouTube and try to open FF again, it says: "Firefox window is already open" or something like that.
Than I have to shut down a process in Task Manager. Really annoying.
Also, when that problem occurs, Firefox using about 80% of CPU and about 200MB of RAM.
By the way, I've installed FireFox 4 RC 2, and I don't have that problem anymore.
