Firelite Firewire external not mounting

I am running OS 10.4.7 and my external hard drive will not mount. I went back to the install CD and tried that but it says that it needs a system folder in order to complete the installation. Where can I find this sort of folder? Do I need to download any new software updates or any drivers?
Help please!!!

Here's the strange thing.  Boot up Mavericks....not mountable. Not visible in Disk Utility.
Boot up Snow Leopard.  It mounts and (obviously) visible in Disk Utility.
I've tried a slightly different MyBook and that works fine and so it looks like some WD problem perhaps?

  • Firewire external harddrives mounting issues

I searched and have not found any helpful(to me) info on the problems with firewire harddrives not mounting. Just for the info, I have a 320G dual connection Western Digital my book premium edition external hard drive. as others, it won't mount via firewire, but will vis USB. It doesn't show up in system profiler or Disk Utility either When it's connected via firewire. I had suggestions to disconnect, unplug and shut down the harddrive and the imac. wait several minutes, and restart and reconnect. That did nothing. Should I return this harddrive for another brand? I want to keep it as I picked it up dirt cheap on sale, and with rebates, instant savings, etc. it was only $109. And no I don't want to just use it with USB, I want firewire.

    Hi Tcimac
It is often difficult to determine a users' specific knowledge level after a few posts.
There are folks that come here looking for help that have never had a computer, and if they did, perhaps someone else like a child or grandchild got them up and running and they are left to their own devices when troubleshooting.
I am sure that those to whom that article was directed do not feel like those are simple steps at all and are often very thankful for the document.
Be thankful for what you do know. Do not forget that to some your question may be equally received-

I had this problem too with my G5 (PPC) and brand new Mac Book.
Both of my computers were given the same local subnet address. To change this go to System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name, you'll see an "Edit" button, click on it and change the name or add a "2" to the end of the name before ".local"
I guess what is happening is both computers are using the same local subnet and your macbook isn't being recognized.
Mine works fine now, hope this has helped you!

  • Firewire drives not mounting on a G5

I have a G5 dual 2.7 and some external Lacie firewire drives. Suddenly the drives won't mount - don't even show up in Disk Util. I can mount them on an iMac just fine, but not on my G5. Any ideas? Many thanks.
    G5, dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.4 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Encrypted External NOT Mounting

I have a 1TB WD external I have encrypted and used for Time Machine backups. I decided to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS. I reinstall the OS to OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. Once this was finished I plugged in the hard drive to access important data. My intentions were to use this hard drive as the primary to keep clutter off my Mac. I noticed that Time Machine had finished its daily back up but was doing something. I opened it and it stated it was decrypting the drive. I could not find a way to pause/stop this process and did not activate it to do such (took forever to encryp it in the first place). I was in recliner and got up to plug the computer in to charge. While setting it down the hard drive slipped out of my hands and came unplugged. It was a short few inches fall so no damage to the HD. Now when I plug the HD in the lights shine on the hard drive and you can hear it working. But it will not mount on the desktop. Called WD for assistance and we found it in Disk Utility. It checked out fine there. Plugged into a PC and would not mount. Found it in a debug panel and checked good. He stated the drive was good but something was going on with the Time Machine/ File Vault. I need to access this HD and is very important to get the information off at the least. I know the password. I just can not get to put it in. Any help??????

...we found it in Disk Utility. It checked out fine there.
What exactly do you see in Disk Utility? Post a screenshot if possible.

  • FIREWIRE DRIVES NOT MOUNTING OR BEING RECOGNIZED

After a recent software update, I cannot get my 3 external Firewire HDs to mount or even be recognized. Often in the past I needed to mount the drives via Disk Utility, but they were are always recognized.
I've had this problem before – usually after software updates – but I've been able to resolve it... up until now.
Here are the steps that used to work either alone or in combination:
    • Restart (duh)
    • Run Cocktail and/or repair permissions
    • trash com.apple.ats.plist and com.apple.bezelservices.plist (for some reason I no longer have com.apple.ats.plist in my preferences)
    • disconnect all externals, shut down for a while, restart and reconnect
I was able to mount one of my drives via USB (slow), but the others are Firewire only.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

It really sounds like you need one of these...

  • Firewire drives not mounting

I have a firewire400 drive that refuses to mount on my G4 dual 1.25ghz ppc (the one that has fw800 and 400). i am running osx 10.3.7
The same drive mounts fine on all other computers I have, G5... and G4 aluminum powerbook. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    800 drives weren't mounting either.
With the power unplugged, I pulled the clock battery in and out, did a PMU motherboard button reset, then restarted.
then the external drives mounted once again.
<shrug> thanks for trying, but problem solved....

  • 10.4.7 & FireWire drives not mounting

    Hi everyone,
since this morning my trusted LaCie FW HDs won't mount, are not seen in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
I tried almost every thing I could find, resetting vram, pram, powering everything down, waiting, disconnecting all the cables, powering back up, connecting one after another, etc. - no changes.
Every application runs fine. Except, of course, Logic because I have all my sounds and song projects on these drives.
My system.log continues to say every second again:
...-Computer kernel[0]: AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA - context not going inactive.
    The console.log repeats:
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "121-210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] found no firmware to load for 210\n
Does anybody know what these logs mean?
Is anybody else having this problem with 10.4.7?
I started a similar thread on A-S-D- Installation and Setup, only to find out, that a lot of people there are experiencing the same issue (FW drives not mounting, not showing).
    Would resetting the PMU help?
    Please help, I can't work

Back from the mysterious world of HDs, so easy to solve..., sometimes...
I tried the HDs on my friends older PB and all was fine.
Resetting my computers PMU did not solve the problem, after I tried everything else.
    I refrained from reinstalling 10.4.7.
All other applications (but Logic, because I could not access my files) were running smooth.
Going back to 10 a.m. yesterday, basically starting over, there was one thing I missed checking (being human): the AC to DC converters supplied by LaCie for their drives.
See, they are under my desk, like out of sight...
Voilá! Individual testing revealed, that the AC/DC converter for the first LaCie drive in my chain did not spin up any of my other six LaCie drives, which I never run all at the same time, but they still have their own power supply.
Changed power supply on the first HD and now I am back to the fast speed and glitch free system I love. Back to enjoying work as well
What a day. And I am very sorry, that I was implying to blame 10.4.7 for this. My PB has never been faster

  • External firewire MyBook not mounting

Post-Mavericks upgrade, this external firewire MyBook is not recognised. Previously it ran OK under Snow Leopard (and still works fine if I boot up into SL).  I am not nor have I ever run any of the WD software that caused data loss.  So am perplexed.
Is this a WD issue or a Mavericks issue?

  • External Firewire Drive not Mounting

Hi, I've been searching these forums but can't find an aswer to my question. I just got a new 27" iMac, and purchased a Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter. I have 3 external Firewire drives, two of which are DC powered (the third, I understand, might be a lost cause, as it's bus powered, and I gather the bus power from TB won't power Firewire drives). At any rate, I'm not seeing either of the DC powered drives showing up, which is a big concern as I have about 5TB of stuff on them!
Any reason these wouldn't show up, either in the Finder or Disk Utility? Much thanks for any help!

Hi - did you ever resolve the dropouts? I have a new iMac purchased in Q1 2014 and connect my G-Grive to it via the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter. My iMac runs 24x7 and this connection drops out on a regular basis - I'd say maybe once every week or so. I have a slightly newer USB3 G-Drive which is connected by the USB socket next to the TB socket on my iMac.
I cannot tell if it is a software issue or a physical (cable movement issue), the plug has never been out and I can't deliberately disconnect it at will by wobbling the cable/plug. So, evidence and experimentation suggests the physical connection is not the issue. This problem has only come about after switching from a physical FW800 connection (my old iMac) to working via a TB adaptor (my new iMac).

  • Firewire will not mount any external devices

I have tried to mount 2 different external hard drives and neither will mount. They will mount on other computers so it isn't the device. I've tried all the troubleshooting I have found on here and still no results. Is there any advice that maybe i haven't seen on the website or isn't on the website.
    thanks

By default, my recently-purchased iMac (a refurb with Snow Leopard) was set to not show external drives on the Desktop. It's easily changed
Make sure you are in the Finder, then select "Preferences" from the Finder menu:
Now you'll see the options for what does and doesn't show on the Desktop:

  • External Firewire Drives not mounting but shown in Disk utlilty

Well the title says it all!
I can see my ibook in target mode on my new macbook in disk utlity but not in finder!
I want to copy over my documents folders (I have tried migration assistant but it can't see the mounted drive either!).
It works fine the other way (i.e viewing the macbook in target mode on the ibook)

    Help!

Is the Mount or Unmount button greyed out in DU when you highlight the Firewire icon? If you can click the Mount one, do so. If you can click the Unmount one, check the Prefs in the Finder menu to make sure that you are showing attached drives.

  • Iomega Firewire/USB External NOT MOUNTING!

I have a 320Gig Iomega hard drive and i've been having some issues with it. when i try to mount it on my powerbook, it only shows as greyed out in the Disk utility, i can verify and repair, i ran the repair which took a VERY long time, and restarted, but nothing changed. ideas?

Did a repair, said nothing to repair, i guess it just takes a little while to mount these days. might be going out...not sure.

  • HELP! Firewire drives not mounting after crash

So I had two FW400 drives daisy-chained together. I was exporting a quicktime while simultaneously compressing another QT in Compressor. Apparently, too much for my computer to handle and I got the spinning ball of death. Nothing would force quit. So I had to shut down by holding down the power button. Restarted and neither drive will mount, daisy-chained nor individually. I plugged in a 3rd FW drive and it mounted fine, so I'm guessing it's not my Firewire Bus or PRAM or something internal to my computer.
Is it possible to fry these drives? Hope not as I have a lot of media on them.

Phew. I’m not sure what happened, but I ran the Disk utility from the Installer disc and no repairs were necessary. But while at it, one of the drives mounted. Then I power cycled the other drive and that one came online. So looks like I’m in the clear!
...Although, now FCP won't launch. The load window appears and the last thing I see is "Loading Audio Filters".

  • Western Digital Firewire 100 not mounting

I have a Western Digital 100GB (WDCFireWireHD-Ox) that was working fine on X.4. I haven't used it in a while (probably since i upgraded to X.4.8) and when I tried to connect it to my powerbook, the hard drive doesn't mount. I dont get any information in disk utility either. Funny thing is if i go to the system profiler it shows up under the FireWire device tree. I haven't used my Lacie HD in a while either and it works fine on the firewire and USB port.
What can i do to get this HD to mount?

I've had this happen when I accidentally unplugged the Firewire cable from the computer without first unmounting the drive. A system restart allowed the drive to be recognized again.
Googling http://www.google.com/search?q=firewiredrive+not+recognizedMYBook&hl=en&safe=off&start=10&sa=N I see a few others with the same problem without any rhyme or reason as to what was causing it. In some instances, plugging in/out/in/out got it working again but that's really not good for your data.
Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so, have you tried mounting it from there? Just a thought. Good Luck
