FireVault: Any reason I shouldn't enable it?

Years ago, an AppleCare phone rep advised against using FireVault, as it he said it made it more likely that a minor corruption would cause a big problem on my computer. Given the state of Internet security these days, I'm re-considering.
I'm running 10.10.1 on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro, maxed out at 8 GB RAM and with an almost-full 500 GB HD and an external HD usually attached to it. I backup to Time Capsule. Is there any reason I shouldn't enable FireVault? Thanks!

FileVault works differently now than it did a few years ago. A few users have reported problems activating it in Yosemite, but on the whole it has no effect on reliability and no noticeable effect on performance. The only real drawback is that if you forget the password and lose the recovery key, there is no way to recover the data (unless you have an unencrypted backup.)

  • Any reason I shouldn't do it this way? RAID backup question

I'm using three 1TB drives torn out of Western Digital external hard drives (hard to find internal drives in Italy) as a RAID 0 for 3TB internal storage in the three extra internal bays. I'd like to mirror that, or something close to it, for a reasonable price. Is there any reason I shouldn't just buy three more external 1TB drives (around €110 for USB2 each) and combine them into a RAID 0 using Disk Utility? Since I'll be using it as a backup for my internal raid, speed isn't really an issue. I'd like to be able to just use Synchronize Pro or Super Duper to regularly schedule backups.
I'm asking because it seems like the cheapest alternative is 4TB RAID boxes like Jobo, Lacie or WD that run about €1000.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

    Hi,
The only draw back that I can see with mounting three more hard disks internally in the Mac Pro is that you may need to remove the DVD, the Mac Pro will run warmer and of course it will be louder. You will need to decide if this is what you want.
I find that the SeriTek/5PM is a better solution.
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm2se2.html
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/5pm/
The SeriTek/5PM is quiet, provides great HD cooling, and allows the user to easily turn off or remove hard disks that are not currently needed. This reduces energy usage, helps backup disks last longer, keeps the Mac Pro cool and quiet and provides virtually unlimited hard disk capability as hard disks can be hot swapped as needed. It will cost more for this configuration but it provides much more flexibility.
    Have fun!

  • Is there any reason I shouldn't work this way?

Given the lack of batch capture in FCE is there any reason why I shouldn't work in the following way:
    1. Import video in large chunks using capture now
    2. Use DV start stop and Make sub-clip
    3. Export just the sub-clips I want as self-contained movies
    4. Close the project and delete the original capture files and the FCE project file
    5. Start a new project and import the movies I saved in step 3.
My reasons for wanting to do this are mainly to save disc space but also to reduce clutter in the bins. So far as I can see this works fine. The only downsides I can see are:
    1. The extra time it takes but this is offset against the chore of capturing individual clips instead of using capture now.
    2. The fact that reimported clips have their audio tracks set to mono mix but it seems easy enough to correct this. (As an aside, if I import a .mov file saved from Quicktime it imports into FCE with the audio set to stereo - why the difference?).
I'd be happy enough working this way, I think, provided I could be confident that I'm not going to lose quality by saving and then re-importing. Will I? Are there any other downsides I've not thought of?

You shouldn't lose any quality in the audio or video, but you may lose the timecode track. I'm not sure if you'll lose it, but if you do, you won't be able to recapture the project clips from the original tape because the timecode would be required. This isn't an issue, if you don't ever need to recapture. The timecode may even be retained... I'd have to do an export to see. As a matter of workflow, you may want to think seriously about keeping the timecode, because you can back-up your project file and have some assurance that you can recover from a chatastrophic failure simply by restoring the project file and recapturing from the original tape.
Regarding your audio and video; unless you were to add effects to the video, there should be no loss in exporting and importing. Losses in DV are incurred when you add filters (alter the image) and recompress. The audio is uncompressed PCM, so no losses to be had there, unless you change the sampling rate.

  • Any reason I shouldn't upgrade to Quantum Gateway router?

This may sound like a dumb question, but I've been bitten before by upgrading software or equipment and missed some gotcha and ended up worse off.
Problem I want to solve is slow/weak internet (old home with thick lath and plaster walls, and lots of walls!).
What I have now is Router Westell A90-9100EM-10, 25/25 internet. Wireless devices include iphone 5/ipad and iPad mini (iPads support wireless N), Amazon FireTV and a wireless HP printer. Streaming music sometimes stutters, and I haven't yet tried to stream video (just got the FireTv yesterday). No game players here, and not likely more than streaming plus an iOS device working concurrently. (Probably tmi, but in case anything is relevant, wdik?)
I'm thinking moving to Quantum Gateway should improve things (noticed the other N capable router, but price not much less). Any reason I wouldn't want to do this? Thank you in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

try buying 1 or more old verizon on router/s on ebay and coax connect them where you have weak signal.  After bridging it to your main router you will have a cheap extender in place with the added capability of 4 hard wired ports.

  • Is there any reason I shouldn't blow away all of Lenovo's special recovery partitions?

They are geetting in the way of a working multiboot scenario of OSX, Windows 8, and Linux. What am I losing by doing this? I can easily build my own Windows 8 USB install stick with all of the Helix drivers on it.

Well there are a handful, but they don't seem to be insurmountable. Going with a retail build of Mountain Lion 10.8.3 (meaning a legitimate purchased copy of the OS only). I've had to rely on a nan/compact USB dongle for both WiFi and Audio, but both are teen small and fit nicely into the back of the device. As for digitizer, it works, but at the moment as you move away from the center of the screen, the pointer will float increasingly until you reach the edge, and it's off by about 150 pixels (or an inch or so of screen space). It's still very usable if you can make that mental adjustment. Not sure if any linux wacom drivers could be ported.
Right now the biggest issue I have is getting a battery indicator (I have none at the moment, so it's tough to know when I'm about to run out), screen brightness, and waking up from sleep (it sleeps just fine, but no go on the wake up). SpeedStep seems to be working, which is essential to using it for more than a few hours.
The triple boot config is not hard at all, take a look at a blog post by RehabMan from TonyOSX86.
I suspect people with more patience than I will eventually get a lot more of the device working, but for overall purposes it's pretty darn functional at the moment, especially for developing apps on.

    Memory Module: BANK 1/DIMM0, 2 GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz
Fullscreen playback is not working, I am using Final Cut Pro 6.0.5

    mmm,
So what are the settings in the sequence you have this Sorenson clip in?
Could be that you have something like uncompressed 10 bit so you'll get no realitime playback off a MBP in that format as the HDD can't sustain the data rate and will just show a frame.
    Check it and get back.

  • Any reason NOT to reinstall OS X?

I just got my PB back from repair. I guess when they put in the new harddrive they just "registered" it as ( ...a's PowerBook... )
I went to change that to (.. Spencer's Powerbook...) but now it seems that some things recognize "Spencer's" and some recognize "a's" and I can't connect to the internet.
I was just thinking of wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS and all applications, but I was wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't. (I have all files backed up on external HD)
Also, I'm trying to determine if one of my RAM chips is bad,(took it out yesterday),.. so if I reinstall OS without the this RAM will I still be able to put it back in and have it be recognized?... man, I hope that makes sence.

Yes format after you backed up all improtant info with or without the extra ram chip.
If you need to put the RAM back later put it in and restart + PRAM reset (commandalt+pr) until you hear the chimes once or longer as you feel like.
Then once in OSX select "About this Mac" on the bkue Apple top left corner and see if it show up as installed.
You must also make sure to get rid of static + power/bat is totally disconected from PBOOK before touching the RAM.
Place ram in slots and make sure they are propperly inserted when removing one and later when adding the 2nd one.
I think there is here on Apple website a pdf that describes how-to do the ram replace I have seen it here somewhere under support ???
If you have to replace the chip make sure it is same brand and specs even down to timing thingy but likely it should still be under warranty from the Manufacturer. Even so micro fractures does occur and can only be seen with a microscope.
    Best of luck.

  • Any reason not to put Lync Edge server on the same server that runs Web Application Proxy?

We're currently running Lync 2010 standard server, without an edge server or reverse proxy.  I'm working on migrating to lync 2013 standard server, and would like to add the edge functionality in the process.  I have a Server 2012R2 in the dmz,
with the web application proxy role installed.  I plan to use that to publish the lync web services.  Is there any reason I shouldn't install the lync edge server on the same computer?

It just won't work well as everything will want to bind to port 443 (the reverse proxy and the edge services as well).  On top of all that, it's just not supported.  A new virtual server will save you hours upon hours of frustration and leave you
    with a supported configuration.

  • Any reasons why the content of a fillable form cannot be viewed or printed?

I have created a 2-page form on Adobe Acrobat XPro. I emailed it to specific people and they filled it out, saved it and emailed it back. I am able to view what they typed in my monitor only, when I click on the field, but it will not print the content. Any reasons why the content of a fillable form cannot be viewed or printed?

That's what I asked the people I emailed the form to and someone just emailed me saying: "I'll check my adobe. It keeps asking me to update and I keep ignoring it so maybe it was my fault". So there is the answer I guess. I saved the document as an Extended PDF and selected Enable Additional Features. Is there anything else I should consider?

  • Happy now with Firefox. Any reason i shdn't trash my Safari applic?

After too long with slow Safari, I've swit ched to Firefox and much faster better.
I've made it my default browser.
Is there any reason I should keep my old Safari app that came with my original old mac g4, Panther.
Should I delete it, ie trash it?
Why should i keep it, taking up space, if i never want to watch it slowly struggle agin. Shouldn't it just be put out of it's misery?
Should i keep iit just for sentimental value?
or keep it because it's Apple?
And if i should tash it, then later for some reason want Safari back on my computer, would thhat cost me?
    Thanks

    Hi thelnukus,
"And if i should tash it, then later for some reason want Safari back on my computer, would thhat cost me?"
At the bottom of the Apple Knowledge Base article that was linked to in your previous thread concerning changing the default web browser:
Safari and Mail shouldn't be deleted
After changing your default application, you should not delete Safari or Mail, >even if you do not plan to use them. You will need them if you wish to change >your default settings in the future.
It also is rather difficult to reinstall Safari and most likely would require reinstalling from disk.
My Safari 1.3.2 only takes up 3.4MB of disk space which in the great scheme of things is really not very significant in size to be of that much concern.
    hope that helps,

  • Reason 442: Failed to Enable Virtual Adapter - Windows 7 64 bit

    Some details about the issue.
I'm trying to connect to my client's network using VPN Client version 5.0.07.0290. The user authetication is done by providing RSA SecureID token value. After entering proper credentials, the client window gets struck at 'Securing Communication Channels...' message in status bar and reports 'Reason 442: Failed to Enable Virtual Adapter' error after few mintues. I have confirmed that this version works for other people in my team , so I'm guessing it has something to do with my system settings than the client itself.
Below are the trobleshooting tips that I have already tried.
    1. Uninstall and Reinstall the client.
    2. Enable WinXP SP2 compatability for ipsecdialer.exe and vpngui.exe.
    3. Clicking 'Diagnose' on the Citrix Virtaul Adapter connection in Networks and Sharing centre, reports no issues.
    4. Enabling Network sharing for Local Area Network and disaling Wireless Networks
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Enterpise OS.
Appreciate any suggestions to resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    PVNSKC
    Update: 9/7/2011
OK, things look much better after a good vacation, always!!!
I tried to connect today by reinstalling the client after a weekend shutdown (I don't believe the cold reboot stuff, but hey, worth a try! ) and it did work. The only change I did today was to disable the Wireless Connection adapter in Networks Connections. I'm not sure whether that fixed or not cause I had tried that already. Anyway, below is my current configuration which is working for now!
    1. Below executables are running in the XP compatability mode.
    cvpnd.exe, VAInst64.exe, vpngui.exe
    2. Local Area Connection is allowed for 'Sharing'
    3.  Registry is updated with below entry.
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    4. Wireless Connection is disabled.
Thank you all for the responses.

    Hi,
Duplicate IP Address Triggers Error 442 on Windows 7 and Vista
The following error "Reason 442: failed to enable virtual adapter"  appears after Windows 7 and Vista reports a duplicate IP address  detected. Subsequent connections fail with same message, but the OS does  not report a duplicate IP address detected.
To work around error 442, do the following steps:
Step 1 Open "Network and Sharing Center".
Step 2 Select "Manage Network Connections".
Step 3 Enable the Virtual Adapter ("VA"—Cisco VPN Adapter).
Step 4 Right-click on Cisco VPN Adapter and select "Diagnose" from the context menu.
Step 5 Select "Reset the network adapter Local Area Connection X".
If this procedure does not work, run the following command from cmd:
    reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    Then reboot.
This resolves the issue until the OS reports a duplicate IP address again. Follow the preceding steps to resolve it again.
If that doesn't work, you might have UAC enabled. If so, you must run  cmd as administrator and repeat the previous registry workaround.
NOTE: You mentioned step 4 already, try the whole sequence again, if the steps does not work then try the registry key.
    Hope this helps,
    Sian

  • Any reason acroread is so slow to startup?

It usually takes several tens of seconds for acroread to open up for me. Once its been opened and then closed and I open it again, it only takes a couple of seconds (ie: in memory). Is there any reason it would take so long the first time, something I can speed up? Its not that huge and ungainly a program that it should take so long on a processor this speed. It also doesn't seem to be an IO problem because my disk monitors don't spike while waiting for the pig to open. The only thing I could think of was perhaps its making a network access before opening (adobe spyware??), but this seems unlikely... and even if it was happening, it shouldn't take that long because I have a hell of a good internet connection too.
I suppose maybe its because its distributed as a binary... not i686 like I'm used to. Could be that.
Ok, but for the ranting -- does anybody have any ideas how I can speed the bloody thing up? Its really annoying when I happen to click a pdf link in firefox and the whole browser freezes for more than half a minute while acroread is checking itself in the mirror...

sorry to piss on the parade, but why not use xpdf?
I used to flip between it and kpdf, but neither of them supports enough of the many pdfs I have to read. I'm not sure what's special about them, but I'm looking at literally dozens of papers per week, and at least half of them don't seem to render properly in the open source alternatives to acroread. I haven't tried them in a while though, perhaps they work better.
