Firewall ACL rules not recognized - WRVS4400N

I have a WRVS4400N.  I purchased this because my several previous routers weren't doing what they were advertised to do, and I need something reliable.  Unfortunately I just discovered that this router doesn't appear to be reliable either.
I have a Firewall | IP Based ACL set of rules defined:
     1 - enable outbound traffic from 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.109
     2 - enable inbound traffic to 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.109
     3 - deny all traffic
My expectation is that only systems in the specified rule 1 & 2 range will have internet access.  Unfortunately even though these rules were all enabled, one of my daughters was able to get internet access using a machine with an IP address of 192.168.1.135.  This is a very, very, serious flaw.
When I remoted into the router, and kicked it by editing rule 1, the access to 192.168.1.135 was stopped (as it should always have been).
It suggests to me that the rules will be followed by the WRVS4400N in an unreliable fashion.
This really makes me angry!!!
I want a solution that I can count on!!!
Sincerely,
Jay

Are you using the latest firmware(1.01.03)? If yes try reflashing the firmware it could be corrupted that is why it is not working properly. Then do a hard reset so that it will return to factory default then reconfigure the device and observe the connection.
That's actually not the latest firmware, it's just the only one linksys ever released without needing to go through support.  There was a .06 and a .08 firmware, probably others.  Even the .08 one is unstable, but at least it fixes the ability to FTP or have wireless DHCP work when no wired clients are connected to the router.

  • Firewall Access Rules do not work on One to One NAT (RV042G Router)

I have two unique IP addresses, two servers, and one RV042G router.
What I would like to do is have each IP address go to it's own respective server. To do that, I've set the settings on One-to-One NAT to make this happen. Now IP address 1 points to server A and IP address 2 points to server B.
However, I only want port 80 to be open to each server. I've tried setting the Firewall access rules to accommodate this but it doesn't appear to block anything. All ports on the servers are exposed despite the firewall rules.
Here's what I have in the router configuration:
    Under One-to-One NAT:
    {internal IP address 1} => {external IP address 1}
    {internal IP address 2} => {external IP address 2}
    Under Firewall Access Rules:
    Action | Service | Source Interface | Source | Destination | Time
    Allow | HTTP Secondary 80 | WAN1 | Any | {internal IP address 1} | Always
    Deny | All Traffic | WAN1 | Any | Any | Always
Is there a proper way to accomplish what I want?

    Thanks for replying.
Turns out I had to add new access rules to specifically deny all traffic to the internal addresses, in addition to the rule allowing the specified ports through.
So, with the IP addresses still defined the same way in the One-to-One NAT section, I now have the following rules defined in the firewall section:
    Under Firewall Access Rules:
    Priority | Action | Service | Source Interface | Source | Destination | Time
    [1] | Allow | HTTP Secondary 80 | ANY | Any | {internal IP address 1} | Always
    [2] Deny | All Traffic | WAN1 | Any | { internal IP address 1 } | Always <== the new one I ended up adding
(default) | Deny | All Traffic | WAN1 | Any | Any | Always <== built in default rule in router
I originally did not add the second rule because I had assumed that the default deny rule would block all traffic to all internal IP addresses anyway. Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I am now assuming that the default deny rule applies to the router only and not to any other defined One-to-One NAT entries. In which case, I had to add another rule that duplicates the default deny rule but for each 1:1 NAT entry.
If this was already in the manual, I probably missed it so that would be my own mistake. Still, I wish this was more apparent in the web GUI as it didn't really specify that I had to do this.
In any case, I hope my solution helps anyone else in the future having this similar issue.

  • RVS4000 Firewall ACL Question

I'm working to setup and configure an RVS4000 for a friend and wanted to verify my understanding of the firewall section.  It <seems> by default the firewall allows traffic from any source to any destination, including from the WAN.  I realize with NAT this isn't a huge concern / shouldn't be the case... however I tend to prefer tighter standards rather than looser.
I wanted to ensure that it allowed internally initiated traffic outbound, and external traffic inbound dropped so I created the rules as shown attached file.  Am I looking at this correctly?  Is the Firewall ACL section for setting up a stateful firewall or is it just pure ACL's and the last rule from the WAN is required for returning traffic back in which has already been through the NAT engine?
If someone could please help me clear this one little detail up I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thanks in advance.

The ACL is just that ACLs. The rules you made are fine, the difference with your set up and the default is that you are explicitly denying the traffic; which is not a bed idea. On that note, that does not mean that the traffic was explicitly allowed before (default config).
Before any rules are created a "deny any any" is already in place but not displayed. This is typical of the small business and consumer routers. The only thing I would change is instead of suplying the subnet, just set it to "any".
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod not recognized by Windows / iTune

When I connect my iPod using USB 2.0, I now get a "USB device not recognized" error on Windows XP. iTunes also does not recognize that iPod is connected.
I believe this problem may have been caused when my iPod was connected to a friend's speakers. When it first connected, the following error message appeared:
"FireWire connections are not supported. To Transfer Songs, connect the USB cable provided".
After pushing the Selct button to gt rid of the error, iPod worked fine in the speakers and continues to work fine with my FM tuner and other devices.
I've tried the following to fix this problem:
    1. 4 of the 5 Rs. (Can't find a way to restore as I can't get iTunes to recognize my iPod).
    2. Reinstalled iTunes.
    3. Simple restart on computer.
    4. System restore on computer.
    5. Tried to update USB drivers.
    6. Tried to load iPod in disk mode.
    7. Went through all of the Apple Support articles for this problem and tried all of the reccomended steps.
As mentioned, my iPod works fine otherwise and I'd hate to have to send it away to be repaired if there is a simple fix. Also, my wife's Nano is working without problem on the same PC, so I have a feeling that this problem is iPod related rather than PC related (though, I could be wrong!)
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
Is there a way to restore iPod manually (i.e. without iTunes)?

  • Iphone 4 is not recognized by Windows Vista

everyting was working great! iTunes recognoized the phone, synching was fine then...
the iphone is not recognized by Vista, no drivers are present in Device manager and the iphone does not even USB charge when plugged in to the PC.
I've reistalled iTunes but the drivers still do not show up.
I've tried to find the drivers on the Apple site but cannot find them.
    Help!

I have had the same problem two times with two different iphones (3gs and 4). After spending more than 1 hour on the phone with apple support, the only thing that worked was using windows xp on another computer to update ios. The funny thing is that when updating to 4.1 I again used Vista and it worked. I suspect it is a firewall problem but don't know how to solve. If you update using xp you can go back and return all your apps, photos, etc from Vista, just make sure you backup before using xp.

  • [solved] Digital Camera not recognized in device-manager

My digital camera "Canon Powershot SX120 is" is not recognized by the devicemanager. I have read Digital Cameras.
    $ groups

The "camera"-Group isn't needed anymore and this group doesn't exist on my system.
The Powershot SX 120 has a  MTP/PTP connection mode (as the manual says). But:

Don't know what to do ... is a udev-rule necessary to bring up the message from device-manger? Or is the Camera not recognized as a mtp-device (the Camera has no such settings)? How could i figure it out?
With Digikam i could import Fotos, but i would do so with gwenview. I've tried to check it out with gwenview_importer:
    $ gwenview_importer --udi '/org/kde/solid/udev/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.1/usb2/2-8'
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
gwenview_importer: Missing required source folder argument.
(don't care about the different udi, i took this example from a former try) but i don't know, how to find out where the "source folder" is ...

I have solved this by making an extra udev-rule for my camera. See my adventure on forum.kde.org for details

  • Iphone 3gs not recognized by iTunes 10.3.1, Windows 7 64bit

    Iphone 3gs, 4.3.2
    iTunes 10.3.1
    Windows 7, 64-bit
Ever since iTunes updated I am unable to sync my iphone 3gs.  I have tried the following steps:
-Uninstalling all iTunes and related software (per apple support steps), restarting, reinstalling all itunes software.  Did not work.
-Trying several different USB cables, did not work.
-Tried all USB ports on my computer, did not work.
    -Restarting phone/computer, did not work.
-Turning off antivirus software (Avast) and firewall (ZoneAlarm), did not work.
I tried syncing with my friends computer (iTunes 10.3.1 and Windows Vista), and it worked!  Unfortunately none of my music is on that computer.
Next, I came across an article and tried the advice listed (install ifunbox on pc, delete itunes.db and itunes.cdb files on Iphone).  This allowed my iphone to be recognized by iTunes.  It began to sync, and gave me the following error: Unable to sync because the disk is not available.
I unplugged the phone and plugged it back in, it began to sync again.  This time it went through all of the aps succesfully and got about halfway throught the music portion, and then iTunes froze.  I restarted both systems and this happened the last 5 or 6 times...iTunes freezes during the music sync portion.
One other interesting note...in iTunes, the space claim bar (colored bar on bottom of sync screen) shows that there should be about 5 GB of music on my iphone, however the ipod app on the iphone shows no music.
Ughh sorry for the long post I am so frustrated right now.

Nope, haven't been able to fix it.  I was able to get some songs to sync by 'manually managing songs' however the songs were all corrupt.  They either wouldn't play, or they would start in the middle of the song, and the beginning of the song would somehow be spliced in to the middle of the song!
So frustrating.  I can't get apps to sync either.
At this point I am not even going to try syncing my phone until a new iOS or iTunes comes out.
For now I have resorted to jaibreaking so that I can at least have a little fun with it

  • TS1363 My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  Is this repairable?

My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  I have tried a variety of options, even resetting, but still no luck.

What does the iPod's screen say or do, when you connect it to USB port on the computer?
The article referenced is for "regular" iPods.  An iPod touch is an iOS computer, so this article would be more appropriate for troubleshooting.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Be sure to rule out a faulty USB cable as the cause.  Try another cable, or try the cable you have with another device that has a dock connector.
Also, you should do this test to rule out a problem with the USB port (such as lack of power or USB device conflict).  Shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices, including any hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
Then, start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.  If it still does not connect, connect something else to the same USB port to confirm it is working.  Preferably, use something similar, such as a USB flash drive or external drive.

  • IPod touch 4th gen not recognized by iTunes 10.7 64-bit, but any solutions I found online do not work.

Everywhere I've looked here has not worked. I have recently gotten a windows 7 laptop and downloaded iTunes, but my iTunes will not recognize my iPod.

    - Opened msconfig
    - The iPod touch troubleshooting steps
    - Taking a screenshot and searching classification of devices for iPod touch or "Unknown devices"
    - Run Diagnostics on iTunes... here are the results:

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Ipod Classic 160GB (2.0.4)
    Itunes (10.6)
    Mac OS Snow Leopard.
    Windows XP.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

At present I have no power to the Gen 7, so need to get some power to it I think.  I pressed the buttons as you suggested, but nothing is showing up at this point.  Thank you for your response as the more I can rule out before  I take it back the better I think.

  • IPod classic (160gb) not recognized by computer

I have a 7th gen 160gb iPod classic which isn't recognized by my computer. I recently replaced the hard drive and battery and it seemed to go off without a hitch. After I put the front plate back on the screen lit up and everything was working. I connected it to my computer and synced it to my iTunes library, although it only would only sync 140 songs out of my 6000 song library. I connected my iPod a few more times and eventually the computer stopped recognizing the USB device. I restarted my computer, my iPod, I tried a new USB cable, and I tried plugging it into my other computer. No matter what my iPod wouldn't get recognized. When I plug it in the screen lights up and it charges but my computer doesn't recognize my iPod as a device.

  • Ipod & ipad not recognized by itunes

ipod touch & ipad are not recognized by itunes. i already removed & restarted  & reinstalled  the amds & itunes hoping it would work, but nothing!  maybe 3rd party software is interfering?? i think i temporarily disabled some software from that 3rd party list, like norton & mcafee i actually removed the mcafee program. and still itunes is not recognizing either item.  pls help. should i entirely remove the  all the security/firewall programs?

Thanks for the response but this didn't work for me. I went thru the whole comprehensive set of steps and still iTunes doesn't recognize either device. I'm not sure what else to do. My husband thinks I should restore the computer to an earlier date prior to the last iTunes software update. Not sure what else to do. For now, both the iPod and the iPad work fine. I just can't synch them.
