Firewall Across Computers, iTunes & mp3's ... oh my! ???

A friend on my LAN likes to work with mp3s. I've heard they're hazardous to download, as people can attach viruses to them. Is this true? He's also become involved with things like Limewire, and others, where they "share" mp3's across some kind of open internet networking scheme ...
He has an HP Windows XP machine ... and my two Macs are a QS 2002, and an XPostfacto'd PowerPC 9500, both running Panther 10.3.9.
We have a Westell DSL Modem which promises Firewall protection.
Are we safe? or am I safe?
His iTunes Playlist showed up on my iTunes Playlist one time, now it's gone. What is he doing? what am I letting iTunes do from my machine?
Does this endanger me, having "access" to his mp3s? this networking scheme he's become involved with ... is my machine (or his) in danger?
Mac Plus, Performa 6116, PPC 8500, 9500, QS 2@1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

His machine is certainly in danger. Limewire (and other peer-to-peer sharing sites) are common sources for viruses and trojans. Since he's running Windows it's quite likely that his machine has been infected.
That, and the fact that unless he's very careful and is only downloading copyright-free content (like bands publishing their own music), he may well be breaking the copyright law (expect to find the RIAA knocking on your door soon).
As for the iTunes question, iTunes has a method of sharing its playlist across LAN computers. This doesn't put your system at risk at all (at least, not from the virus/trojan aspect). It will only happen when he's running iTunes and when his preferences are set to share his playlists, which may be why it doesn't appear all the time.

  • Sharing iTunes library across computers

Step 5 of the Help file says "select 'Automatically import new purchases from [Computer Name].'" Where is that selection found?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd be happy to elaborate. In iTunes Help, enter "home sharing" as the search term, and select the top topic, "Sharing your iTunes library across computers." The five items are under the heading, "To import items from other libraries using Home Sharing."
I have gone over the steps again and found my problem. I was signed onto the Store under different names (different Mobile Me email address, both mine) on the two computers. I switched to the same name, then turned Home Sharing off and then on on both computers. When each opened the other's library, the other library window has a Settings button in the lower right hand window. That button produces a pane with setting for automatic transfer.
The Help file could be improved. Or iTunes could recognize multiple email addresses for one Mobile Me account. Thanks again.

For your computer first get iTunes to see it by:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    or
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - The transfer iTunes purchases
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Or redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to your compute and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

If you look at the feed, and look at the entry 'The end to an exciting field season in Aulavik National Park' you will see the line:
    <pubDateFri, 29 Jul 2011 04:00:00 GMT</pubDate>
You have not closed the 'pubdate' tag - there should be a '>' as the 9th character. Because the tag has been left open, it invalidates everything which follows it, and thus the entire feed. iTunes therefore cannot read it, which is why the Store has not updated. Add the '>' and republish, and all should be well.
It's always worth checking your feed by subscribing manually, from the 'Advanced' menu, or by clicking the 'subscribe free' button on the Store page (both do the same thing) - if you can subscribe to the feed it should be OK.

Update:  I tried the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" after everything else either fizzled out or hung up. After going all the way thru the recovery process (up to 100%), I finally got an error message.....it didn't work. And now, when I fire up the computer, I don't even get to that menu with the recovery options....the only thing I can boot into is the screens with the various ways to run your OS (in "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc).
I'm not a techie, but I'm guessing at this point, the part of my hard drive that got damaged in the fall was, at the very least, the partition with the recovery data. Couple that with the fact that this cheapo Toshiba laptop didn't even come with recovery disk (or ANY kind of disk, even basic installation software!), I'm screwed: I don't see any way to get a workable computer now without some kind of disk to boot from. So NOW my concern is more about spending the $$ for a new OS and THEN finding out the hard drive has other problems too...is broken in some other way to boot.
How to check this? As I said, I did run "chkdsk" back when I could get into the recovery menu and run the fix-it programs. It didn't note any problems. Thinking of taking this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista (which I never liked), but I have to know that the computer is otherwise ok....how to be sure?

  • HT4236 Hello, does anyone have any advice on how to sort photos in an albumn on an Iphone by date of photo? I've ordered them all in my Pictures but then when I sync them across through Itunes, they all end up in a jumble on my phone. Thanks!

Hello, does anyone have any advice on how to sort photos in an albumn on an Iphone by date of photo? I've ordered them all in my Pictures but then when I sync them across through Itunes, they all end up in a jumble on my phone. Thanks!

When viewing an album on the iPhone you can tap "Photos" at the bottom and that will show all photos by date. Unfortunately though it is all photos, not just the album you are currently viewing.
What I have done is the following. On the computer I have a main folder (e.g. iPhone photos) and then make sub-folders within that. Placing photos that will be synched to the iPhone into various subfolders gives quite a bit of organizational capablility. In iTunes when you select the main folder to sync, the sub-folders will show on the iPhone as separate albums. Beyond that, in one case where I really wanted a specific sort within an album I renamed the photos on the computer (something like A-picxxx, B-picxxx) so they sorted on the computer alphabetically in the order I want on the phone. That sort order was maintained after the sync.
Note that each time you sync using iTunes, the non-Camera Roll pictures on the phone will be set to match the current iTunes settings/photos -- so you can experiment.

  • ITunes MP3 CD wont play in MP3 enabled stereo

    Hi All
I have been searching around these forums and this is driving me round the bend. I burn an iTunes MP3 CD and it wont play in my car stereo. The discs load but just show up as a one track CD that continuously plays but with no sound.
My car is not old and it can play MP3 CD's. I have tried all the recommendations - adding to a playlist and setting the playlist order, creating cd's in the root directory, creating cds with tracks in folders and also using the Finder to burn the files to disc - nothing.
I really want to do this as my car has no aux input and FM transmitters are rubbish quality.
    Any ideas?

Could be the CD burner. Has it been checked?

I need to sync an ipad mini with a regular ipad. If I were to open them plug them both into the same computers itunes, would they have identical information?

You will need to choose one as the "master", back that unit up to iTunes, then restore the other unit from that backup and then sync all the same content and apps. That's the only way they'd have identical data. If you need to keep then synched on an ongoing basis, you'll probably need to use some sort of cloud-based service such as iCloud or Dropbox to hold the data, which of course will require that your apps support that service for storage of documents.
    Regards.

    What "early operating system"?
    What version of iTunes?
    What "latest operating system"?

  • Should I convert all my iTunes MP3 files to AAC?

Somehow, I only learned about the advantages of the AAC format a few days ago--despite getting my first Apple computer way back in 1984.
Would it make sense to convert all 80 GB of my iTunes MP3 files to AAC in order so save disk space in my backup before migrating to Yosemite?
Thanks again everybody for all your great help and suggestions.

No. If you originally got them from CDs, you can reimport them as AAC if desired.

  • Where do I find the "On My Mac" mailbox files and can I Sync them across computers?

I want to find out if I can sync them across computers and have the files show up on my desktop and my notebook.

Here's where mine seem to be:
    Macintosh HD > Users > (MyName) > Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes > (etc.)
Not sure if yours are there.  I haven't tried syncing them between computers with a program such as Chronosync but it may work.
    Maybe this helps.
