Firewall blocking video chat connection

I tried to video chat with my wife today from work on my PlayBook. Got a message about a firewall blocking it when it tried to connect us. It gave no further info so it's kind of hard for me to figure out whether this is my work wifi or my own router at home causing this.
Where can I find more info on this?

Hello TheMarco,
Do you know if porting forwarding has been enabled for the firewall settings?

  • Firewall and Video Chat

I've had my iSight for about a year and haven't had too many problems connecting and starting video chats (even from other universities). However, I am working at a University in FL now and was trying to start a video chat and I get the message "Failed to start Video Chat because: (my name) did not respond" After reading some of these discussions (University Firewall and Video Chat in particular) along with other help topic suggestions, I am guessing this is a firewall problem concerning open ports? I can connect with the apple test server for video chat, but not with my buddies. I haven't contacted my IT dept. yet about firewalls, but any suggestions in the mean time? Thanks in advance for any help.

    No Problem.
Seletion of Connection speed test sites that report Up and Down speeds
    1) http://www.dslreports.com/stest
    2) http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
    3) http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
Speed tests do not actually say how much bandwidth you will get at any one time on a shared connection.
If you are in Halls and paying rent with a supposed internet Service you might be able to play the "i'm A customer" card to get a better service.
In Britian most Universities have a Students Union that can also appy pressure in the right places.

  • Two Macs, Same network - one cannot make video chat connections

My iMac and my MacBook are on the same network. The iMac has no problems making video chat connections, the MacBook cannot make them at all.
I've used two different accounts on both machines - both work on the iMac - neither works on the MacBook.
I've deleted all the iChat preference files, I've adjusted the bandwidth and streaming preferences in iChat and Quicktime.
I've swapped IP addresses on the two computers, I've tried both fixed IP addresses and DHCP addresses.
Since the iMac is working, it's obviously not a firewall or router issue - I'm not doing any port forwarding to the iMac.
I can make a video connection between the two machines using Bonjour, but not over the internet.
Here's the output of the error message:

Im trying to just chat with another mac user. Both macbook pros. I've tried with two of my friends, and both came up with the same error saying they cancelled the connection. I tried changing my connection to port 443 and it doesnt work. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Error message "firewall is preventing my video chat connection"

What settings are required on the firewall to allow video chat?

Called RIM support and needs to enable port forwarding for:
    443 - TCP
    3478 - TCP + UDP
    45535 -  65535 UDP
    hope this helps
Feel free to give me a Kudo if this helps you!

  • Mac to PC video chat connects only one way?

This may be somewhat off topic for Mac users, but maybe someone in the community can still help me.
I have a strange problem using iChat AV 3 on a MacBook and AIM 5.9 on a PC for video chat. I can readily establish video chat when the PC contacts the Mac, but vice versa the video chat cannot be established. The PC gets the invitation to video chat, but as soon as it accepts the connection is terminated, and I keep getting a firewall error message. Instant messaging between the computers can be established both ways. I assume that one crucial port on the PC is blocked by the firewall. Scouting this and other forums I found lists of possible ports that need to be opened, and I tried all of them, but nothing works. Tried the DMZ for the PC, which didn't work either. Tried deactivating Windows Firewall, which didn't work. Any other ideas?
The PC set up is as follows:
Thinkpad T23 with Windows XP SP2; Windows Firewall on, AIM port allowed; Netgear Router MR814v2; UPnP activated, no port forwarding at this point; AIM 5.9
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Jan,
Thanks for the pointers, but network utility didn't
reveal any problems. I really assume the problem is
    on the PC side.
    Ralph,
I monitored the contact attempts using connection
doctor, and it didn't give me any error messages on
the mac side. To answer your other question, I did
activate UPnP in the Windows Firewall as well as in
the router, but that didn't help either. It turns out
that activating or deactivating UPnP on the router
doesn't make a difference. It always only connects
one way. I did however activate windows firewall
error logging, and it gave the following log
    (192.168.0.2 = PC IP; 192.168.0.3 = Mac IP):
    #Version: 1.5

Not being an expert in this maybe someone can give me
a hint based on this. The three final UDP drops in
the Mac to PC connect attempt make me suspicious, but
I'm not sure how to address this. I think I tried
forwarding this port to the PC without success.
Thanks again for the comments so far.

    Fritz,
Could you have a look together with Ralph if maybe the Adobe Bridge is malfunctioning. I have found a missing component wich is known and documented. This is the bug report and the way to fix it. I have found it in my own computer, after fixing it the iChat suddenly worked. I suggest you take the missing part (the update file you were asking about Ralph, it is lost in a file named update) and run Fritz' test again. If the code progressively gets better then we have pinned down the "random" factor of the malfunction. The documentation you find here: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332537.html. It blocks the airport. A lot of peolple run Adobe foto shop, mine came from Elements. So, do expect progress... Have to bring my daughter to school now. See you later. • Blackberry Playbook Video Chat Connection Problems

    Hi
trying to use the Video Chat App, i have found that almost that the app is not working 50% of the time due to the way it is designed.
Most corporate environment will provide a tight security on their network and are very unlikely to open their firewall to peer to peer applications.
considering that RIM always aimed at the corporate, this is rather disappointing.
Even if some companies were to open their firewall. there is no guarantee that the person you want to talk to will
i have this in home network, corporate network and some hotels HSIA and only succedeed to have it working on home network.
I hope that RIM is working on an alternative method of connection that do not require port opening on firewall.
Should someone from RIM read this, comments will be appreciated.
    thanks
    regards

    Dear Cpts
    Thank you for your reply.
However, as it stand, I have not found one corporate network that allows by default Video Chat.
This means that all your corporate client (including ourselves) cannot use the application.
Other Web based application such as Skype, Messenger, both providing Audio and Video are working natively.
Wether a company decides to allow the use of those, or block those is then a matter of choice.
Providing a service to the Corporate Market that does not work, is in my opinion less than useful.
Great App... but cannot use it. as I will never know if our users are within a Wi-Fi network that will allow them to use it.
Imagine if BBM was in the same predicament.. Can only use it is port xx are opened.
Video Chat is the next level to BBM but cannot be used.
Our corporate users are travelling worldwide using a multitude of Wi-Fi network, and I cannot rely on this application for effective method of comminucation.
I sncerely hope that RIM will rethink the communication method, in a more transparent manner.
    Thank you
    Kind regards
    Emmanuel

  • Video chat connection problems

I've been trying to video chat with my friend. She's using iChat v.4.0.7, I'm using iChat v.3.1.9. The most that happens is that we connect, and I get one frame from her end, but then we get a communications error (in particular, error -20). I made changes to the firewall and such, but it seems like nothing's working. What seems to be the issue here? Is it a compatibility issue? I can provide the error log if needed.

    Hi,
Try these things first at both ends.
System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab. Set the speed to 1.5Mps and restart iChat.
This is particularly important at the Tiger end (iChat 3).
Once ichat has restarted go to the iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts and deselect "Use this Account" to Log out of AIM (or Jabber).
Now whilst Logged Out go to the Sever Setting tab and change the port to 443.
    Now Log back in again.
The reason is that some modems and routers have issues with the AIM Login port at 5190 (it's on the TCP Protocol) and the use of port 5190 on UDP as well for Direct IMs, File sharing and Buddy List updates, which, for some reason, "bleeds" over into Video chats particularly on Zyxels.
This Apple Doc is related to both issues.
Error 20 can be accompanied by a written message which is most commonly "Can Not Get Video from Camera"
Sometimes it is "No Data Received for 10 Secs"
As you actually get a picture I suspect the latter.
In this case look to your Modem or router and see if it has a DOS or SPI feature.
This may be a separate thing or included in the firewall in any higher settings.
It is best to turn this Off.

  • Video chat connects, but I can't see my buddy.

Every time I video chat with a friend, it connects and I can hear them and they can see me, but I am unable to see them.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure that you enabled the appropriate iChat ports on your router, that SPI firewall is disabled on your router, and make sure that NAT & UPNP are also enabled on your router. Also, make sure that your Apple firewall is either off or set to allow iChat communication. Then, if the problem still persists, reboot your computer.

  • University Firewall and Video Chat

Hello!!! I got my isight about a week ago and I haven't been able to use it for video chat yet. Every time that I try I get the (popular as I found out) message "Failed to start Video Chat because: (my name) did not respond". I tried everything that I read here but I didn't have any luck. My internet connection is from the University of London (connection is provided through JANET (www.ja.net)). Does anyone know if this is the problem and if the necessary ports are not open from their firewall? Because if that's the case I can stop trying since they will not open the ports for me I'm afraid (sniff!!!). The annoying thing is that my video works (bad) with yahoo messenger but not with ichat. Anything else that I can try?

    Hi Ioanna,
Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages.
Ahh the JANET server. I thought we had done this one.
JANET is a server that ties most if not all the Universities together.
I have had dealing with them before. Last time was when then did some sort of Upgrade and lost the settings for some people. It was difficult to tell if this was a "planned" move to claim back bandwidth or "security" issue.
Ok So iChat can log on to AIM and you can text Chat.
Is this with the port listed in iChat (Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings Tab) showing as port 5190 ?
Download a Utility called IPNetMonitorX and do a UDP port scan on ports 5060 - 5678 and again on 16384-16403 to the JANET server. This should tell you if those ports are open on that server (or possibly any in between you and there).
IF They say they offer Internet Access and you are a paying customer then thy should oepn the ports for you (or state what sort of interent Access you can expect). If they are allowing AIM Users to Video chat and not Mac/iChat users yuo can point out that the 23 ports for iChat is smaller than the number betweenn port 1024 and 5000 that AIM need open. (discrimination is the next installment.).
Sometime everything works if the port 5190 is changed ito 443 in the aforementioned spot.
Oh and ask around the other students. I am sure there must be someone that I told last year still there.

  • A (hopefully) simple video chat connection question

Hey all. This forum is quite helpful - thanks.
    My question is:
I am in Texas, my boss is in Montana. We both have 10.4.3 and supposedly broadband connections. We have been unable to make a video iChat connection. Each of us, independently, can connect with the test user, appleu3test03, but we cannot connect with each other. We get what seems to be a standard error message, that the invitation to chat was declined or not responded to (when we know that is not in fact the case).
Since we can connect with the test user, is it safe to assume that our problem is not related to routers and firewalls and NAT and ports, or should I still endeavor to talk him through configuring his router up in Montana?
Thanks again for the help. I hate to make another post on a common problem, but I could not find an answer to this specific question on the forum.
    PB 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    An Update:
Tony was kind enough to help us diagnose. Both my boss and I could independently video chat with Tony. Also, with Tony hosting, we participated in a three-way video chat. All seemed great. However, my boss and I still cannot video chat with each other, no matter who initiates the chat.
Tony suggested a router issue; the firmware on my end is up-to-date. We're checking with the Boss's system, but as his router is new I'm not hopeful that a firmware update will fix things. I would think that if our problem had to do with firewalls or ports or the like we would not have been able to do any chatting, but I do not know.
So, if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them. Our current theory is bandwidth-related. Both the boss and I can video chat with the test and with Tony. Both the test and Tony have large bandwidth on their respective ends. Assuming both my boss and I have marginal bandwidth, would it be possible that when conferencing with a large-bandwidth person everything works, but the marginal-to-marginal conference cannot cut it?
    Thanks again.

  • Video Chat Connection Error

I bought a Macbook Pro about a week ago and have so far had only once successful video chat.
Every other time (multiple times daily) that I try to start a video chat, it ends up telling me that it was failed because I did not respond.
This happens both when I try to start a chat, and when other people try.
I am on the road constantly and have tried to start a chat in both wireless networks and hardwired networks.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Have you changed the System Preferences > Streaming tab speed setting to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN ?
    Restart iChat afterwards.
Also is your Mac Firewall On ?
If so set the ports as in the second pic http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html
These same ports need to be open or allowed in your modem

  • Video chat connection error - what to try next?

When trying to video conference via AIM to someone from my Comcast cable modem connection to someone using wireless internet access at a hotel, iChatAV tries to connect and then generates an error message and asks if I want to send the error to Apple. closing the error message results in an insufficient bandwidth error, but I don't believe that to be the real culprit. Here are the details after lots of troubleshooting:
-Both computers running 10.4.8 and iChat 3.1.5
-I tried using a G4 Mac Mini and a G4 PB; she is on an Intel PB
    -dslreports.com says I get 418kb/sec download, 44 kb/sec upload
it says she gets 199kb/sec download, 52 kb/sec upload (and was probably annoyed that i made her do all these tests.
-Guessing that the Atlanta Ritz has a firewall that might block high port numbers, first she tried switching over from 5190 to port 443 resulting in the same error, then I switched so that we were both connected to AIM on 443, resulting in the same error.
-Same error message results if only attempt audio chat; text based chat works fine.
We've never had problems video conferencing until now. Any ideas what to try next? I saved the error log if that will help anyone, but don't know which of the 522 lines is relevant so I won't bother posting any of it here.
    -Lewis

  • Firewall blocks the wifi connection of my Canon MP620? Why?

I've had my Canon PIXMA MP620 set up wirelessly to my MacBook Pro for months now, and just today it turned out that it stopped working. After lengthy search for the cause of the problem, I discovered that my MacBook's internal firewall started blocking the connection to the printer. If I change it to 'allow all incoming connections', it works, but obviously I don't want to keep it that way. The other option is to 'set access for specific services and applications' and add the required utilities to be able to print, but that means that now every time another application needs an access, I have to click on the pop up window to allow it, which is very annoying.
I've tried everything to fix this problem and let firewall to be set to 'allow only essential services' and still let my printer work as before, but nothing works. I updated printer's drivers and software, changed firewall settings a million times, reinstalled the printer again and again. The threads from other forums don't solve anything and it seems that a lot of people don't understand the problem.
Recently, I downloaded the EFI Firmware and SuperDrive updates (which, by the way, don't work correctly). I wonder, if this whole firewall/printer problem has something to do with it. It's just so irritating when everything works very smoothly and suddenly it stops, because of some stupid updates that destroy your settings and preferences.
    Help, please. Thank you.

First of all, I don't believe the updates would have been a cause. I have a 10.5.8 setup that is isolated from Software Update, hence the Firmware update hasn't been executed, and it exhibits the same issue.
When you think about it, the operation of the firewall makes sense. It would be difficult for Apple to foresee that a third-party application like the Canon IJ Network Utility (aka BJPrinterApp2) is an essential service. There is certainly no provision for a user to set what they deem to be essential, hence the additional function of selecting specific apps.
    For the record, HT1810 states the following;
    Allow only essential services:
This is the most conservative mode. Mac OS X will block all connections except a limited list of services essential to the operation of your computer.
The system services that are still allowed to receive incoming connections are:
    * configd, which implements DHCP and other network configuration services
    * mDNSResponder, which implements Bonjour
    * racoon, which implements IPSec
If the MP620 used Bonjour instead of its proprietary protocol, then you may have a solution. Connecting a printer to the USB port of an Airport device still functions with the essential services setting selected.
However, the printer doesn't use Bonjour so IMO I think you have a decision to make. Turn off the firewall or live with accepting the prompts for adding these services to the list.
Like I said, this is just my opinion. Maybe someone else can provide you with a usable solution?
