Firewall blocks afp even though enabled!?

This relates to a G5 running 10.4.11 and a mac pro running 10.5.5
We are having a nightmare with file sharing between two machines. We can connect fine from the mac pro to the g5 via a ethernet router. We can't however connect from the g5 -we can however connect to the internet and pinging the mac pro works. We have tried connecting with the bonjour adress and the ip addres - no results. The personal file sharing tabs in system preferences on both machines are ticked. The firewall is set to allow essential services, and below are listed printer sharing, file sharing etc. However i opened the log and saw that a few afp connections had just been denied - turn the firewall off and we can connect to the macpro. Surely we should be able to connect on a local area network without the firewall blocking it? It also denies cupsd (we have a printer networked to the g5) but also less frequently nmbd, which seems weird as to my limited knowledge this is to do with windows file sharing - and we do not have a windows machine on the network.
Weirdly I enabled the firewalls on both machines fairly recently after noticing they were off - however my client (i am a retoucher) has confirmed that filesharing was always like this - even when firewall off which I seem to recollect as correct. In theory if we have a router with firewall enabled do we need the firewall on on the macs?
Please help I have reached the limit of my knowledge on this one! Many thanks

On the MacPro > System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing, is the list of shared folders what you expect and for each shared folder, are the authorized users and permissions set up as you would expect? Clicking on the options button underneath that panel, is AFP checked, and if desired or necessary, SMB and/or FTP?
In theory, I would say yes, if you have full faith in the personal integrity of all the local users on the LAN, and you believe them to be cautious enough that they won't have inadvertently downloaded and installed some sort of malware onto their machines, and you believe that your LAN is adequately secured (e.g., using WPA2 for the WLAN), then it is true, you should only need to maintain the firewall at the internet-facing router.

  • 2nd try. 1) firefox isn't blocking popups even though its set to 2) firefox doesn't recognize when I click "allow"

    Firefox has been allowing all sorts of pop-ups even though I've established the block in the content. This is just one of the pop-up sites: http://partners.livingsocial.com/cities/soon?ref=cpxpop
    When I go to a website I'm interested in a ribbon comes up at the top of the screen telling me to "allow". But when I click this it disappears for a second and then comes right back asking again. I have to check the X in order to get it to go away and that doesn't always work. I've even "allowed" certain sites on the options pages but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

    There may be a problem with malware if unrelated pop-ups are opening or you are redirected to unrequested websites.
    Do a malware check with some malware scan programs.<br />
    You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
    Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.<br />

  • Firewall blocks Airplay (even under 'allow all traffic')

    Hi every body,
    I am somewhat at the end of my knowledge. I have a mac mini server running Lion 10.7.2 server. Interestingly, my the server's firewall blocks
    a) all airplay traffic and
    b) 'reading Airport confirguration' requests
    even when the firewall is set to 'allow all traffic'. However, when I completely switch it off, everything works just fine.
    Any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    Nonresidentalien
    P.S. I have also tried to open ports 80 (t), 443(t), 554 (t/u), 3689(t), 5297(t), 5289(t/u), 5353(u), 49159(u) and 49163(u) with no success

    Pointing to the IPv6 thread was a good idea. After reading it, I found out that the firewall preferences in Server Admin only show you IPv4 related firewall rules.
    There is a terminal command that allows you to play with IPv6 rules. And by doing so, I was actually able to get AirPlay working again.
    First, you want to show you the current IPv6 firewall rules. In my case they looked like this (10.7.2):
    reptilehouse:~ sascha$ sudo ip6fw show
    01000        285      96163 allow ipv6 from any to any via lo0
    01100         66       5750 allow ipv6 from any to ff02::/16
    65000          0          0 deny ipv6 from any to any
    65535          6        306 allow ipv6 from any to any
    As you can see, rule number 01100 only allows traffic to the local subnet, while the next rule (65000) blocks anything else. So you want to get rid of 65000:
    reptilehouse:~ sascha$ sudo ip6fw delete 65000
    To confirm, show the rule table again and you should see 65000 is gone:
    reptilehouse:~ sascha$ sudo ip6fw show
    01000        285      96163 allow ipv6 from any to any via lo0
    01100         66       5750 allow ipv6 from any to ff02::/16
    65535          6        306 allow ipv6 from any to any
    Mind you, the rule numbers could be different on your system and you could see more or less rules. But you get the idea.
    What I don't know if whether this is sticky, e.g. survives a reboot.

  • Adobe Flash & Javascript don't work even though Enabled

    Ever since what I think was either a Firefox upgrade (I don't know which one) or installation of Quicktime, my Adobe Flash Plugin is perpetually crashed and I cannot play any Flash content on any website. All that displays in place of the video is a gray screen with the sad-face Lego icon and the message: “The Adobe Flash Plugin has crashed. Please reload the page to try again.” (See attached image.) But it will not resolve when reloaded.
    No Flash videos on any sites work. HTML5 videos work on YouTube when tested, but non-HTML5 videos won't work.
    Also, my Javascript does not seem to be working since at least some displays requiring javascript don't work. Sometimes the display just doesn't work, and sometimes I get a message that javascript is disabled and must be enabled, but it is already enabled (set to “true” in about:config).
    I have spent days scouring every help forum entry I can find on troubleshooting Flash Player and Javascript. Everything on my end seems to be in order and I cannot find or fix either problem. I think it is possible the issue could have its roots in the fact that Javascript seems to not be working which may be preventing Flash Player content from working...??
    Also, Flash content does work in I.E. but not in Firefox (I do not have Chrome installed so did not test in Chrome). I have too many window tabs open in Firefox and can't switch to I.E. (nor do I like to use I.E.).
    PLEASE HELP as this is crippling for very important work deadlines I have.
    This is what else I know and have tried:
    I have a Toshiba Satellite C75D-A Laptop;
    Processor: AMD A6-5200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics; x64; 2.00 Ghz;
    RAM: 8 MB;
    OS: 64-bit system; Windows 8.1 (but some auto-check utilities detect it as 8.0 because it was upgraded.);
    Graphics Card: “Desktop Graphics” System – AMD Radeon HD 8400 (0x9830);
    Installed Graphics Driver Version: AMD 13.352.1004.1007 (Driver Date: 4/22/2014)
    My Device Manager graphics driver updater states: “driver software is up to date.”
    From the AMD website: the graphics driver auto-detect utility recommended the AMD Catalyst Driver (amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-without-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit.exe) I tried installing this driver, but it won't install. After trying to install, I got a message stating: “We are unable to find a driver for your system.” But Device Manager states I have a current driver, and my graphics card & driver seem to be working fine, so I do not believe this is part of the issue.
    I am using Latest Firefox version 35.0.1; and
    Using Latest Flash Player: 32-bit NPAPI Plug-in Version: 16.0.0.296; designated: “always activate” (Downloaded new update several times, including fresh install after uninstall; system & web address icons indicate Flash is enabled).
    I turned off hardware acceleration in FF Tools>Options>Advanced>General
    I disabled WebGL as explained here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
    I am using Ad-Block Plus which has never affected things in the past. I have not tried starting FF in Safe Mode because I believe I will lose all open tabs and not be able to recover them (I may have over 200 open). But disabling add-ons has no effect (I disabled all except for Sessions Manager in case of a crash). (My No-Script has been disabled for at least six months.)
    I have Windows Media Player and Quicktime installed.
    Quicktime is most recent upgrade (7.7.6) so should not be a problem according to:
    “QuickTime plugin takes over Flash” at:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Disabling_Protected_Mode_in_Flash_11.3
    (note underscores in place of spaces in string; underscores not insertable here)
    Disabling Quicktime had no effect in the prior version of FF (ver. 35.0), but in latest FF ver. 35.0.1, Flash videos only display a plain (blank) gray screen instead of the sad-faced icon and crash message.
    (I tried to uninstall Quicktime altogether, but was not able to due to Error codes 2502 & 2503. I tried troubleshooting that as well with no luck using methods successful for other programs, including here:
    http://www.fixkb.com/2014/01/error-2503-and-2502-when-uninstalling-on-windows-8.html;
    & here:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-winapps/re-internal-error-codes-2502-and-2503-for/ba5f2145-aa6e-4cc0-81a7-e4346f43b698.)
    Disabling my FF theme and using the default brought back the sad-faced icon and crash message in the place of videos on some YouTube pages, but not other YouTube pages (where video was still blank gray screen). It also enabled a still Flash image (an ad) to display on a different website page that previously had a Flash Plugin crash message. I have been using this same theme for a couple of years without previous issue. While turning it off did generate an effect on some still imagery, it didn't fix the video problem.
    I tried Disabling Protected Mode in Flash 11.3 as explained here:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Disabling_Protected_Mode_in_Flash_11.3
    (note underscores in place of spaces in string; underscores not insertable here).
    It did not solve the issue.
    I also deleted all storage & data in Flash Player as advised. This had no effect either.
    I've tried all solutions I've been able to find and am at a loss for what to try next. Please help and advise ASAP. Thank you!!

    I truely admire the efforts that have been made to make this work.
    "“We are unable to find a driver for your system.” "
    For it not installing, you need to follow these instructions to install them: see the comments: [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_devices/windows-10-atiamd-display-drivers/50944d10-dde3-4e08-8244-d54eb2b1e7de] --> take warning though it looks like it has caused issues for others as well.
    Since it was working for some youtube videos and not others, there might be an issue with a particular video codec. DO you have OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc. plugin?
    Is it possible to try Safe Mode after saving your session with [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/ Session Manager Addon]? IT would test hardware acceleration in Firefox.
    </blockquote>
    Thank you, guigs2! Sorry for my delayed reply...I didn't realize I hadn't gotten back to you. Update is that I did try a whole slew of other troubleshooting steps including starting FF in safe mode, to no avail. However, I was FINALLY (after months) able to solve this problem just today by pure chance!
    The problem was that hardware acceleration was enabled in the Flash settings. I had not been able to turn it off because I didn't have access to the Flash Player settings as long as the crash error message was visible, which was all the time! Today, by a sheer fluke, I saw a static picture in place of the crash message on a Flash video. I snagged the opportunity to call up the settings and turn off hardware acceleration, and it fixed the problem for my whole browser! This has been a frustrating issue because I did not have access to the settings utility as long as I had the crash message, which was always, so my Flash was crippled without the ability for me to fix it until pure luck gave me this window of opportunity.
    Does anyone know another way to access the settings utility if this ever happens again in the future? I could not find a way. (Incidentally, I had tried disabling hardware acceleration via my graphics driver settings, but it didn't fix the problem.) We need Adobe to allow some other way to access the Flash Player settings utility when this problem arises since they aren't accessible when there is a static crash message.
    Thanks again!

  • Firefox is blocking Java even though I had the updated version. Now I can't update or uninstall Java.

    On 4/2/12 Firefox informed me that Java had serious issues with security and I should let them block it, so I did. Later I found I couldn't play Pogo anymore so I tried to enable Java but it still wouldn't work. My Java is up to date, 6.0.290.11. Now I cannot update Java, error 1606, nor can I uninstall Java from my computer, same error cannot access location, in order to re-install. Since I was using the most updated version, my Java should not have been blocked. Anyone else have this problem? I am stuck and can't update or re-install or anything.

    I have the latest version and today it blocked it

  • Firewall blocking AFP

    It seems that firewall prevents connections to my computer via afp. I use the option that allows setting access for specific services and applications separately, but can't figure out how to allow access for afp. Is this possible somehow? Thanks.

    Anyone? I know it should be possible, but at least the grapical interface for setting permission allows only adding permissions for applications and as far as I know there is no application corresponding to afp...

  • Message re blocked plugin even though Java reinstalled

    News reports stated a security problem with Java and recommended disabling.  I did this and then tried to enable it again and now cannot get it to work.

    A few weeks ago, Apple issued a security update for Java 7 which is used for Lion/Mountain Lion.  This security update actually disabled Java 7. So, if your a Lion/Mt Lion user, this explains your situation.
    As an aside, I have Java 6 installed in my Snow Leopard iMac (which was not a part of the security update).
    I have Java disabled in my computer for about a year, because Java, in general is prone to security breaches. I have had absolutely no problems surfing the web at all with Java disabled.  NOTE: I'm talking about Java, not Java SCRIPT.

  • Can't make In App purchase even though enabled

    I am trying to make an In App purchase on three devices - basically so I can play an MMO with my sons (Celtic Heroes).
    The purchase worked on my Ipad and my first sons ipod.
    But when I try to make the same InApp purchase on my second sons Ipad I get the message:
    "Please contact itunes support to complete this transaction"
    Who do I contact? On which device? What part of the encyclopedic itunes support section do I go to?
    (Note: In App purchases are enabled on my sons Ipad and his device is authorised to access my account).

    Apple  Support  iTunes Store  Contact Try this link out!! I was having issue also with making in-app purchases, I email Floyd ( Apple Customer Support ) and they were able to adjust my account within 4 to 5hrs ( I know this may seem a long wait by hey when all fails....patience is the virtue to success!)

  • ISA (Microsoft firewall) blocks Essbase Server comm.

    Has anyone any experience with a locally (laptop) installed ISA firewall and Essbase Server ?I my case the ISA firewall stops all connection between the application and the Essbase server making the server crash.The firewall has only been set up to redirect communication on the external port to a proxy server, but when off-line it blocks Essbase, even though it is internally communication on port 1433 and 32768++.RegardsMartin

    The below link is for SP1 and
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2616326/en-us is the link for the update package. The update packages for ISA can be seen as "mini-servicepacks" as they are cumulative and includes fixes previously released.
    Also, make sure that you have updated SQL Server Express (SSE) properly to avoid any issues there.
    Yes, textlogging is more effective in the sense that it consumes less disk space and is generally faster. Look in the logging section in this article,
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb794817.aspx. Furthermore review this article (yes, it does apply to 2006 as well)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc302682.aspx.
    One of the key differences between SSE and text logging is that when using textlogging, you can't search the logs for what has happened (previous records), only live data.
    Btw, you don't happen to have anti-virus running on this box? If you do, seriously consider removing it. This should be the first thing you check, for further details, see

  • Firewall blocking internet

    Sometimes I can't view web pages when the firewall is on, even though I can ping from the computer and everything seems fine with the modem. It happens a few times every week.
    When this happens the firewall log has entries like this:
    Feb 16 00:01:29 localhost ipfw: 12190 Deny TCP 66.249.93.95 89.240.195.140 in via en0 (frag 51366:40@1376)
    The bit at the end in brackets is the unusual part that only appears with this problem. Does anyone have any idea what that could mean? The numbers change, except the @1376 bit which is always the same.
    I have been assured this is not a hardware fault by Apple and they even doubt it's to do with the firewall, but the problem disappears when the firewall is off.
    Has anyone heard of this before?

    Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Which websites does this occur on? Perhaps we could try to recreate.
    You might wish to try Flying Buttress (link) will allows find control of the OS X IPFW without embracing the Terminal.
    I wonder if some site is trying to use Port 1376.

  • I recently upgraded to Fios Quantum and have a new ActionTech router. As a result my PC is no longer communicating with my APPLE TV.It must have a firewall or ports beegin blocked preventing the homesharing and communication even though the APPLE TV is on

    I recently upgraded to Verizon Fios Quantum high speed internet and was given an ActionTec router. I sucessfully installed all and connected wth my Apple TV. Although it worked initially it no longer does.  Something appears to be blocking  the Homesharing between my PC and the AppleTV even though the Apple TV is successfully connected to my home network. I spoke with an Apple Support Tech who was unable to help me becuase I have a PC! He admitted this is a common problem with FIOS and PCS. There must be a port that needs to be opened in the router. I do not beleive it is anything to do with my antivirus software or Windows Defender as i uninstalled all and still not communication. Must be a port within the routter that is blocking tis communication. On my Itunes you can see that it does not see the Apple TV. Please advise.

    I'd have to agree. I set my vms and two clients on Saturday in one hour. I think the picture is better I did not see an issue with the brightness. For the heck of it I recorded five channels at once to test it. I've also noticed when playing a recorded show on the client everything responds a lot quicker. So I am impressed and curious to see what new features come later.
    Kudos to verizon.

  • How PIR's are consumed by the customer requirements even though the sales orders are blocked?

    Dear experts,
    I am using strategy 40 for material A with Backward/Forward consumption of 60 days backward and 60 days forward.
    My PIR is as follows :-
    Material Month #1 Month #2 Month #3 Month #4 Month #5 ....
    material A 100 100 100 100 100 ....
    I created a Sales Order for material A with the quantity of 600 in Day 4 of Month #1.
    After MRP run, planned order conversion and production order has been completed.
    Month #1, Month #2 and Month #3 PIR's are consumed even though we made the setting in Such a way that the sales orders should just display but not planned  . and the sales orders are into the blocked requirements list in the result of /n/afs/MD02.
    1)but why it is consuming the PIRS?
    2)is there any affect of backward and forward consumption on this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Bhargavi Desai

    Hi,
    Normally it is recommended that, not to delete PIR's one by one or remove quantity from previous periods/ requirement manually. If the PIR's of previous month is not consumed it is normally a feedback to sales people to do a analysis at their end.
    In PP point of view, normally a re-organization run is carried out by MD74, MD75 or MD76. The same can be done by  scheduling batch job to run on month ends basis w.r.t. period you specify.

    Early Dec 2010 - payment block on line items in accounting document set to "A" in t-code FB02
    Late Dec 2010 - payment was made to the vendor, even though payment block of "A" set on the document
    How can payment to a vendor be made on this document if the payment block is set to "A"?  Can this be over-ridden manually by the user?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    Go to transaction OB27 and restrict for manual payment and change of payment block in payment run.
