Firewall blocks web sharing

2 computers, laptop with Snow Leopard, large web site in ~/Sites/htdocs, with .shtml files and an SSI file to add text common to all .shtml files. I'd like to see this on the desktop computer as it appears to others , but Firewall blocks web sharing on laptop. How do I  fix Firewall?

System Preferences>Sharing.  Is File Sharing selected?

  • Firewall blocks internet sharing

    Hi all,
I know this has been covered before but I've never seen a solution that works for me. Maybe someone has time to talk me through it.
All I need to do is configure the OS X firewall so that internet sharing via ethernet isn't blocked by the firewall. Can I do this via the terminal? Which ports do I need to open? I need this to work so I can distribute builds across Xcode installations but I think internet sharing is all that is required for it to work.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

In the Sharing pane of System Preferences, click the Advanced button under the Firewall tab, enable firewall logging, and then try using those services on the other computer. When done, check the firewall log and look for the number after the : in the logged entries; this is a port number. Knowing the IP address of the other machine will help determine which entries were produced by it as opposed to ones which came from the Internet; this is visible in the Network pane of System Preferences.

  • Web Sharing, Firewall, & Security Issue

I recently turned on/activated Web Sharing, but I forgot to turn on the Firewall. Now I think I may have gotten malware, or some other sort of bad stuff on my machine.
Am I right in this thinking? If so, what steps might I take to offset the damage? Thanks.
Quick background note: I was experimenting with the using the Apache server that comes built in with Mac (because I'm learning mysql, php, etc.) And this tutorial mentions the importance of activating the Firewall if the user turns on Web Sharing http://www.macinstruct.com/node/112
    Specs:

I didn't know about Quarantine being included in the Leopard OS ("Quarantine is a feature of Mac OS X introduced in version 10.5 (aka Leopard)) Thanks for pointing that out.
More generally, I've been using Macs for several years and really like them, but this was the first time I activated/enabled Web Sharing for using the Apache server software and so I was just a little worried about that. And also, it seems as though my system has been working more slowly than it usually does.
BTW: I did some of the most commonly suggested steps for improving performance.
    1. Check to see I have latest OS updates. [Done]
    2. Run/verify/repair disk permissions via Disk Utility [Done]
    3. Clear browser caches [Done]
    Thanks again.

  • Firewall blocks some services when sharing internet connection

    Hello,
I have some issues regarding internet sharing that I hope someone could successfully troubleshoot :
    2 computer, iMac G5 2.0 and an original "17 PowerBook G4 1.0, both running 10.4.7.
The iMac is connected to the internet via Ethernet and shares its connection with the PB using the Airport.
The problem is that when the Firewall is enabled (just using the built-in one) the shared connection is limited for only few services :
Web browsing, iPhoto and iTunes Bonjour sharing, Apple Remote Desktop all work smoothly while iChat, MSN Messenger, Bittorrent clients can't connect and Mail can't go Online (can't connect to my Gmail accounts). Since even enabling all default services in the list doesn't help the only solution is to completely disable the Firewall in the iMac. When the Firewall is off everything goes back to normal.
I tried to isolate the problem but I can't get my finger on the right ports to open.
I tested sharing the connection through Firewall instead but it's the same so It's definitely not related to the type of connection used to connect the two computers one to the other. It is strictly related to the Firewall.
I found two Apple documents :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107653
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107594
I carefully followed the instructions but it didn't resolve the problem.
From reading the first document I learnt that port 443 is related to the Secure Sockets Layer service so I searched Apple document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106439 for other ports related to that service but since I'm not an expert I couldn't figured it out right by myself.
Setting for the iMac side are as followed :
Network panel : Airport is active. (as recommended in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107594 I set Airport to the highest port priority).
Sharing panel/Services : Personal web sharing is set to ON. As I mentioned before even enabling all default services in the list doesn't help.
Sharing panel/Internet : Internet sharing is ON. "Share your connection from" is set to Airport. "To computers using" : Airport checkbox checked. I tried the Firewall option instead as well.
Appleshare is ON and automatically configured (zero configuration in the Firewall) on both macs.
Ports for iChat, MSN and Gmail on the iMac side are open. iMac has no problem to connect to these services directly.
On the PB side turning the Firewall on or off resulted the same.
Could someone please help me to configure the Firewall so it won't have to be always turned off?
    Your help is much appreciated

  • MacoBook Pro connecting wirelessly via Personal Web Sharing from iMac G5

Subject line says it all... more specifically my problem is that some things seem "blocked" on the MBP when i'm connecting wirelessly via my iMac network, but then are 100% functional when I use other wireless networks.
    examples:
    • gmail via Mail.app [mailbox always has the ! symbol and says it's timed out]
    • playing app-based online games, certian functions will not work
    • using FTP software, it won't connect
Maybe this an issue I can fix with port forwarding, if so how do I go about doing this? I was told my iMac is technically acting as a router, but I don't have a lot of experience with this type of networking. Thanks!
    iMac G5 2GHz • 15" MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Personal Web Sharing can be a bit tricky and yes, it's because of the firewall on the Mac that's sharing its connection.
The actual firewall software in the Mac is completely configurable, but the friendly user interface doesn't support the more sophisticated configurations. Fancier setups would require the use of commandline scripts run from Terminal.
You'll save yourself a lot of headaches if you buy a wireless base station, and forget about using Personal Web Sharing. A $60 Linksys will do the job nicely.

  • Web Sharing set up question

First... I thank you in advance for your time and efforts on this issue that I have.
    =========
I have 4 macs each hooked up to separate TVs and running Plex for content serving and so far have been able to adequately manage the lot of them. I can remote Admin from my mac and I've done a good job with setting permissions and access as far as file/printer sharing goes.
But I haven't been able to get the web Sharing features working.
It seems easy enough... turn on the web sharing in preferences and point the browser to the correct IP address.
When I do that I am able to reach the web page located in the top webserver/documents folder... or the ones in the users site folder from any of the locally networked machines from the IP addys that can be found in the websharing preference pane.
But from off site... over the net... no one can get access at all... "cannot locate server" ... and "server time out" messages appear.
These are all new Mac Minis and a new Mac Book running Snow Leopard and they seem to network rather well for me locally so I'm thinking my router is blocking????
I have the firewall turned off and it reads that all incoming connections are allowed.
What am I not setting/looking at properly? what need I do to allow someone to get access to my websharing folder and view a web page or download a file? Or to get access to the htdocs folder in MAMP/
I tried installing MAMP and that all seems to be up and running but I have the same issue... local machines can access the files but off site machines can not. grrrr .... (i love macs)

For anyone else who has issues with setting up web sharing.
I found my solusion first by getting an Airport extreme base station and then by following the instructions posted by Thomas and I'll paste part of it here for you but there is a link you'll need to follow for the main instructions.
    Thomas says the following:
    ===============
You can't just access machines on your home network from the outside world. Your typical home internet connection has one single dynamic IP address assigned to it. Depending on your network setup, that IP address might be your wireless router, wired router or cable/DSL modem, and that device takes responsibility for routing traffic to machines on the local network. On the local network, machines will have IP addresses like 10.0.1.1 (if you're using an Apple AirPort base station), which are completely meaningless to the outside world.
I posted some instructions for how to get access to a specific machine on my home network from outside here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9436505&#9436505
Of course, as I mention on that thread, if you have different hardware, this method may not work for you. Also note that you should not expect to host a website this way. Web access for your own use is one thing, but your internet service provider will shut you down if you try to host a public web site over your home network connection.
    ===========
And one thing that I did learn unfortunately is that NO... you can't route the web sharing feature to more than one machine at a time. Kinda messes things up. At least for my mac mini it did... had to delete my user account and replace it to get back to normal after trying to set up web sharing on two machines.
Also.. the settings changed both in the System prefs as well as for the airport are easy enough to reverse and set back your previous settings should you want to.

  • PERSONAL WEB SHARING - ANYONE HELP!!!

My goal is to setup personal web sharing for my mac mini. My intent was to check out my web page design from the internet (just because I could), but now it's changed to wanting to prove that I can conquer this (for my own pride).
Here's my setup: Cable internet (Cox Communications), Airport Express, Mac Mini.
I have put the web page into the /library/webserver/documents folder. I have forwarded port 80 on my router to my local IP address. I don't have my firewall up at this point.
The scenario is as follows: I can access my webpage using my public IP address only on my local area network. If I go to work, I cannot access the page. If I go to my friend's house, I cannot access my page.
I've read countless forums in search of an answer to this dilema. I have talked to Cox about blocking port 80 (which they don't). I have now spent the better part of the day talking to Apple about this problem. They concluded that I was smart enough to set up everything correctly, but were just as stumped as I was in trying to solve the problem.
So, they directed me to this forum. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem, I'm all ears. I'm willing to try pretty much anything to get this to work (my pride depends on it).

I know it may seem like this issue has been answered, but this forum seems to be the closest place for me to report on my very similar situation and see if there is a solution, if not the same one offered by Charlie, above, perhaps some other insight into the nature of this problem, and its resolution.
    BACKGROUND and OBJECTIVE:
Like MacDaddy, I am trying to set up a personal web sharer on my iMac G5. I started out yesterday with the goal of setting up an FTP server, because I want others to be able to download very large video files (500 MB to 2 GB). I subscribed to .Mac and I tried this on an iDisk, but I soon learned that the upload times were so "painfully slow," as others have also reported, that I decided to try to let people grab the files directly from my own hard disk. In theory, the Mac is equipped to allow this to occur, right?
I couldn't get the FTP server setup to work, because access was denied, so I decided to shift my effort to creating a personal web server and create pages to files that could be downloaded.
    SET-UP:
I use Adelphia Communications as my Internet Service Provider, and I get a dynamic Internet address, which has not changed since I began this process and which, says Adelphia tech support, is not designed to change until and unless I disconnect from their system. I have a small home network, hard-wired and connected through LinkSys BESFR41 router. I created a test home page with a couple of links; the web pages are located in the default ~username/Sites folder.
I know the difference between the 192.168.x.x addresses generated by the router to identify the computers on the network from the 24.49.xxx.xx IP address provided by Adelphia. I learned how to do the port forwarding for the router so that the iMac, which is identified as 192.168.1.102 on the network, should get the HTTP incoming traffic on port 80.
Here is a web page containing links to the screen captures that will illustrate what I've selected in regards to:
    • Sharing Preference
    • Firewall Preferences
    • Router status setup
    • Router Port Forwarding setup
    http://home.adelphia.net/~jmbattaglia/personalwebsharer/index.html
Also, I understand that the correct format for the URL to be given to my friends goes like this:
    http://[IP_address]/~short name of user's account]/
So, this is how I have used it in my situation:
    http://24.49.xxx.xx/~JohnMichaeliMacG5/
Also, I've learned that, for one computer on the network to bring up the personal web server pages in its browser, I should use this format:
    http://192.168.1.102/~JohnMichaeliMacG5/
where, as I mentioned, the iMac G5 has been assigned the internal network address of 192.168.1.102.
I think I've got everything right, but I'm willing to be corrected in order to get this thing to work properly.
    RESULTS:
Like MacDaddy reported, I can successfully access my test web page internally on my private home network. This means that I can access the web page on the iMac G5 when I key in either the 192.168.1.102 format, or when I use the 24.49.xxx.xx format, in a web browser on my PowerMac G4.
Similarly, I can access my test web page when I use the 24.49.xxx.xx format in a web browser on my iMac G5 itself.
However, no one else from the outside world can see my pages! That's the problem which MacDaddy reported, and that's the mystery I cannot understand.
Spurred by the insights of this forum, I contacted Adelphia and I asked them if the HTTP port (80) and the FTP port (21) was blocked. The tech support insisted with absolute certainty that those ports were open and that all ports (up to a very high number) were open. I pushed him hard on it, and he consulted an internal Adelphia document which listed the closed ports, and the ones I am interested in were not closed.
He referred me to Apple, which wanted me to either to upgrade my service warranty contract, or pay $49 to ask a question that they would not guarantee they could answer. I passed on that option, and decided to post my question here, where there may be some resolution on a problem that may be preventing many of us from realizing the full potential of our machines.
    SOLUTIONS:
I have not tried to implement the solution that Charlie offered to MacDaddy, which apparently made him a happy camper , because I have no reason to doubt the Adelphia tech support person who resolutely assured me that port 80 is not blocked. If no one can offer any alternative insight into this problem, then perhaps I will have to try Charlie's suggestion out.
But I just thought I'd post my situation, in case someone else can explain what the heck is going on here and suggest an easier fix. It is unfortunate that something which should have taken a few clicks of the mouse to set up has turned out to be a complicated technical adventure over a twisting, winded path lasting over two days, but that's what's happened. Can anybody straighten this path out? Thanks.

  • Personal Web Sharing - Setting up an OS X Server

A question regarding personal web sharing. I am trying to turn my sister's old slot loading iMac into a web server. I wiped the machine and installed a clean copy of OS X 10.2 and then performed all available software updates. I have the site loaded in the web server folder in the main library.
The problem is getting the site to load on computers outside of my local network. I configured my router to send traffic on port 80 to my server computer. The firewall on the server computer is open on port 80 (PWS).
I can access my website from all the computers on my network, but not from any computer outside of it. I try entering the IP address that this website(http://www.whatismyip.com/) gives to me, but it just says that the server couldn't be found.
Any suggestions? All help is tremendously appreciated.
iMac (Flat Panel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

well if it is the case that your isp is blocking the ports then the only way around is to get another isp... or to hack thier router that you sit behind The former is probably the better idea haha.
Also it may be that your isp offers you server space with your internet service - many do... it usually isnt much but it might work for you. Also most have service upgrades you could chose to do which would mostlikely give you the port access you need and possibly a static ip address. However these are likely to be geared towards small business so your internet service would most likely double in price. And ofcourse you could get a hosting account. IF its not for a professional site there are alot out there that you can get for as little as 3 bucks a month....
In regard to what BD said above... you can check out all the rules in the firewall and make sure theres nothing funy in there somehow by using this command in the terminal:
    sudo ipfw show
that will print a list of rules in the firewalll

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks

  • Help with Firewall and Internet Sharing

I’m trying to use my Mac Mini with an Airport Extreme card, which is connected to the internet using Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem, for Internet Sharing with a Windows (work) laptop.
So, in the Sharing preferences panel:
Share connection from: Built in Ethernet
    To computers using: Airport
    I get the warning message:
Other settings may interfere with Internet Sharing.
The ‘More Info’ button gives the popup message:
Your firewall settings will prevent computers sharing your internet connection from browsing the web. Enable Personal Web Sharing in the Services pane to allow computers sharing your connection to browse the web.
I do that, turn the Airport card on, and the laptop can see the network, but can’t connect.
If I turn the Firewall off, then I can connect fine, but then I don’t have a Firewall. Isn’t that risky if I’m using DSL? How can I do the internet sharing and still protect my computer?
I realize I could buy a router with a built-in firewall, but isn’t there a way to set up the system using what I have?

    BDAqua wrote:
We just need to figure out what port is needed. I'd goto Sharing>Firewall>New>Port Name... Other, and try Port 53 both UDP and TCP.
Oh, and when you say the PC can't connect, could that just mean it can't browse?
On the PC, put the IP of the Mac in DNS servers, or...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.22
Well, I'm unable to set the DNS server addresses, as this is a work computer and I don't have the administrative privileges.
How bad is it to just turn the Firewall on the Mac off when I want to use the connection?

  • Can't get Web Sharing to Work

I can't seem to get Web Sharing to work internally or externally with the AE. ON the G5 with MacOS 10.5.6, I have Web Sharing turned on under Sharing, Security > Firewall allows all incoming, Network configured as DHCP with IP 10.1.4.
On the AE, under Internet > Internet Connection I have Using DHCP, Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address. Under DHCP I have a DHCP reservation for my G5 10 10.1.4. Under NAT, I have enable default host at 10.1.4. I currently have NAT Port Mapping Protocol on and have Web Sharing configured (though I have tried with it off).
Under System Preferences > Sharing and Web Sharing selected, when I select my computer's website I get Safari can't connect to server. Same when I try to access a web page hosted here via dyndns.
So, there must be something I'm doing to cause this but I sure can't figure it out.
    Any ideas?

Solved. Just did created /var/log/apache2 directory and a chmod 755 on the directory.
Had to keep digging through discussions to find it.

  • Web Sharing – What's Going Wrong?

Hi, I've been hosting a Web site for a while using OS X and a few days ago out of the blue I couldn't access the internet. The diagnosis told me that I could connect to my ISP but not the internet. I restarted my Router but had no luck.
Later, my connection gradually sped up to it's normal speed however I can no longer access my Web sharing documents through my external IP. Safari says the following:
'Safari can’t open the page “http://**My IP*/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding'
I haven't changed any router, httpd.conf or computer settings, so what could the problem be? Here's what the Netgear log says when attempt to access the site through external IP:
    'Sat, 2009-10-24 21:28:40 - TCP Packet - Source:192.168.0.4,62729 Destination:195.82.146.120,80 - [Web Sharing rule match]'
One thing I have noticed is that at some point my local IP changed from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.4. Is this the problem?
Please, any help will be greatly appreciated!

It was the fact that my local IP had changed. I've changed the router's firewall accordingly.

  • Web Sharing starting up....

    Hi all
I'm a newbie that would like to learn the basics of PHP and web applications.
I've followed instructions and upgraded the current php on my system. I used the terminal and followed step by step instructions as i have no idea what i'm doing with that application, and coding. I tried to test a simple php file (that tells you the current date/time) in dreamweaver (soon after) and it didn't work. =(
Well, After following more and more instructions i find my machine with a new oracle user, some sw folder with an application called fink inside it, and all sorts of little files and stuffed folders that seemed to do nothing positive for my current goal.
I found out shortly after that i probably, simply didn't have apache up and running so once again i've folowed instruction but i've got the following issue: I'm trying to get the apache to start up by clicking the Personal Web Sharing 'start' button in the Sharing area in the System Preferences. The button works, it all goes grey which tells me that it's doing something... but unfortuantely nothing seems to be happenning. I've been through the forums and followed many terminal instructions that have been given to people with the same issues but nothing seems to be working.
I've gone to work with all the most recent instructions and simply by using the terminal to get rid of a few #'s to get its native php kick started, and pressing that start up web sharing button in the preferences, seems to have worked fine. I haven't tested that .php file to test if its worked or not, but the Web Sharing started with no issues.
I guess i'm a little worried that with all this tweaking and upgrading of my system that i may have i killed my chances at getting this php working on my imac, and probably injured it in other ways too.
Can anyone give me any hints as to what i've managed to do to my machine and how i may be able to fix anything that i may have broken.
If my novice terminology isn't helping much, i do apologise and if anyone out there is willing to help me out i'll do my best to make this all make sense.

    Hi Rick
    right.. I've been on php.net
Gone into the intro section... copied the script from http://uk3.php.net/manual/en/introduction.php into a blank dreamweaver file. saved it as index.php and previewed the file in my safari window staright from dreamweaver (which has a root of file:///Users/.......htm)
I get a blank screen (so i guess that means its not reading the php)
I tried testing it locally from my works ftp area... same deal (root was like www...../test/Index.php)
I've also tried just typing in http://192/168/0/19/~Byron/ and that isn't even showing the normal file that used to show up as standard (from the sites folder)
which is why i'm thinking i've done something bad...
    My firewall's off =)
It's not starting up the Personal Web Sharing (and i reckon thats the problem)
When im just doing normal html static sites in DW its fine.. no problems with viewing locally at all. Its as soon as i introduce server technology (php) that it becomes un-viewable. (well it loads the file... it just doesn't read anything thats on it).
Yeah its just in the Local area. I'm just trying to view pages locally, on the machine that created the files. Then upload them to the ftp server later on, once i've got it all running properly.
Php wouldn't have NEEDED upgrading, it was just one of the things that php.net said would have been a good idea for me to do. (so i followed the advice from their site) Now i think about it, i actually upgraded php (from that site) before i found out how to unlock the native php from the system.
    Would that effect anything?

  • Web Sharing Not Working on External Computers

OK, here's my problem.  I cannot view my websites on external computers (e.g. work computer, neighbor's computer, etc.) that I'm hosting on my Mac Mini.
I'm running a new Mac Mini with OS X Lion, with the latest update.  I have Web Sharing turned on.  I have my firewall on, but the options show that I'm allowing web sharing.
When I visit my site on my local computer, it works fine.  I type my domain name in my browser, and it finds my website.
But when I'm on an external computer anywhere else I get this message:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.100/~vgadisciple/clan_vga/index.html” because Safari can’t connect to the server “192.168.1.100”.
I have tried various browsers.  I have turned off my firewall.  I have cleared the cache in the various browsers.   I have made sure Apache is running via my Terminal.   I have tried everything I can think off.
Why can't I view my website from any other computer besides my local machine?  Please help.  I'm tired of paying $200 a year to a company to host my website when I can do it myself.
Any help resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

OK, no one was able to help me.  I realized what I was doing wrong.... and I should have realized it...
192.168.x.xxx IP Addresses are always local IP addresses, and computers on the WAN cannot acccess that via the hypertext transfer protocol.  I should have known this, but Apple's web sharing was pretty clear that my 192.168 IP address would work, and I thought behind the scenes it would work out the details.  But since OS X Lion is more like Windows ME than previous OS X versions, I shouldn't have assumed that.
To make it work, I subsititued my LAN IP address of 192.168.1.100 with the IP address from my ISP.
Then after that I logged into my router and I used port forwarding, named the port HTML and using port 80, via TCP, and forwarded that to my local 192.168.1.100 IP address.  And now it works fine.
So for example, my URL, instead of being http://192.168.1.100/~vgadisciple/clan_vga/index.html, I substituted 192.168.x.xxx with my IP address given to me by my ISP, which is 98.203.xxx.xx.
    Works like a charm.
