Firewall disabled

I noticed the firewall is set to be down as an initial option on upgrade.
Also the FW program is one of the least intuitive i have seen in any system software. Perhaps Apple should make the FW panel clearly show the firewall is actually 'on'.

  • Error during the installation of Windows 8 Apps while having Windows Firewall disabled

    Hello,
    I have a question:
I have Windows Firewall disabled in W8  and when  I try to install  APPs from the Windows Appstore  I obtain an error message saying something like:
"The app couldn´t be installed because Windows Firewall service is not running. Enable Windows Firewall service and try again"
I have the Firewall of Windows disabled because I already have another program for this purpose (monitoring/tracking my internet connections). So, that´s why I want to keep it disabled.
Does anybody know if this problem is going to be fixed and in the next future we will be able to install W8 Apps with the Firewall of Windows disabled?
Thanks in advance for the info.
    Regards.

    Hi,
thanks to the steps of the webpage you have posted I´ve seen the code of the error in the log of my computer:
error 0x80073D0A: when trying to install the package XXXXXXXX, the system couldn´t register the extension windows.repositoryExtension owing to the next error: The package couldn´t be installed because the service "Firewall of Windows" is
not running. Enable the service "Firewall of Windows" and try again.
It matches with one of the codes of your link.
I think this question should be fixed. I (and I suppose much more people) already have a Firewall different than Microsofts´one and I want to have access to the Windows Store running only my "third-part firewall". Having two Firewalls running is a waste
    of resources.
    Regards.

  • Self Assigned IP + Firewall Disabled = No security?

Hi everyone. My 8600M GT card died last week, so I had my logic board replaced and my Macbook Pro returned to me a few days ago. Before the logic board replacement, I had no issues connecting wirelessly to my Apple Airport Extreme (newest model with 7.4.2 firmware). After the replacement, I couldn't connect and found another topic in this forum concerning the Self-Assigned IP issue. So, I decided to disable my firewall as it was only way I could connect regularly without having to re-enter network information or delete .plists from the Library folder every time I restarted the MBP. Now that my wireless is working, I have no firewall for security. I understand others are having the same problems, so I would like to know what everyone is using as an alternative to the OS firewall.

If you are using an Airport Extreme base station, then you have a hardware firewall, so the software firewall is redundant.
However, you may be able to get it working correctly.
Do you have MAC address filtering set up on your AEBS? If so, I imagine you would need to change the MAC address of your computer since it probably changed.
I don't know if any of the below will fix the issue, but it is what I would try. The preference files will be recreated to default settings after you delete them.
First, I'd delete the keychain entry for connecting to the AEBS (both login and system keychain), and remove the AEBS from the preferred networks in Network Prefs. Restart the AEBS and try to connect.
Second, create a new Network location in Network system prefs. See if it will connect correctly, now.
Third, delete the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist. This will require you to set up your network interfaces again, so jot down some notes on the settings unless you can remember anything you set up special. You can add an interface (airport, ethernet) by clicking on the add button at the bottom of the list.
Fourth, delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist. Lots more stuff to reset, preference wise. If you open the plist first, you can get an idea of what is stored in that file that you will have to reset.

  • Rtp300 firewall disabling

How do i turn off the firewall on my rtp300 so that i can use a static ip and port forwarding

Hi , As per my knowledge, i don;t think there is an option on the RTP300 to disable the firewall. As far as using a static IP and port forwarding in concerned, you should still be able to do it.
Give a static IP on your PC and forward the application specific ports for the same IP address.

  • EA6500 - Problem with Ipv4 firewall disabled

I'm encountering the same issue described on this thread: http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/EA4500-Problem-when-SPI-IPv4-is-disabled/m-p/5520...
    But with my new EA6500.
When i disable the IPv4 firewall, i'm not able to access a lot of websites(the homecommunity included).
I think its time to take some action about this problem, i want to access my router remotely, but if i disable the firewall i cant acess it.
    This is very disappointing

I have some equipaments that i need to access remotely, like my IpCameras purchased together with the new router. With the firewall enabled, i'm not able to connect with them.
With my old router(its old, sooo old), i dont have any of this issues, but i'll give a try when I get home today, i'm in work now, but i have no expectation that will work.
This is a strange and non sense bug, cause i'm acessing the sites, not the sites accessing my router, a disabled firewall could not be a problem, not to access a web site.
I have problems of many disconnects too, like i saw in other threads, but this is another subject.
I think all that i can do is wait till a FW update, cause i'll not be able to return the router, and my old router is **bleep**
    Thanks for the replies.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, before post here, i already tried to reset, re-configure so many times. I'm with the latest FW.

  • I am getting a timeout when attempting to upload os5.0.1.  (3 attempts) including with av and firewall disabled.  1mbdsl.  3hr  download time.

Thrree different times I attempted to download the new OS to my wife's iPad.  each time it would proceed to a point somewhere around 80 minutes remaining (started with 3+ hours remaining and downloaded about 4mb per minute).  I have a 1mbDSL line that routinely tests out at around .85mb per min.  I have tried all the "fixes" I found on the site including isolating allother USB interfaced hardware, rebooting both machines (PC and iPad), shutting off AV and firewall and still it fails at about the same point - giving error 3259.
An attempt to find other info or any way to comminicate directly with Apple re this was not successful.
    Any ideas?
My next idea is to take the entire PC to my son's where there is a faster internet connection but that is a lot of trouble and you shouldn;t have to do that.  with other large file updates I have done on other software, if it fails or times out you are able to resume where it left off and eventually get it done.

An alternative is to try downloading the update via a browser : https://discussions.apple.com/message/16703914#16703914
You could also do that via, for example, a friend's computer and then copy it to your own computer for the actual update.

  • Why is Firewall disabled by default?

I cannot understand why Apple would do such a thing. If your computer is hooked directly up to a cable modem. You have absolutely no security. This is a terrible thing to do. What's even worse is that if you had Firewall on in Leopard. Even if you do a upgrade to Snow Leopard it turns the Firewall off??!!!!

Quoting from elsewhere on the 'net...
    -=-=-=-
    Short story:
If you do a clean install to a blank or erased disk, Snow Leopard will set the firewall to OFF by default, just as Leopard did.
In the Security pane of System Preferences, click the Advanced button in the Snow Leopard Firewall tab to get to the rest of the options found in the Leopard Firewall tab.
    Long story:
When Leopard arrived, Apple changed the interface to the Mac OS X firewall and caught a fair amount of flak as a result for the confusing way the options were offered. (It also made things worse by deciding to turn the firewall off by default.) In Snow Leopard, it has retained the application-based part of firewall services but has tried to simplify the presentation. The tab now opens with a note of whether the firewall is on or off, a Start/Stop button, and at the bottom, an Advanced button
The Advanced button opens a sheet that present basically the same options as those found in Leopard. But Snow Leopard replaces Leopard's three confusing radio button options (Allow all incoming connections, Allow only essential services, and Set access for specific services and applications) with a single straightforward checkbox "Block all incoming connections." Below that is a scrolling list, carried over from Leopard, that shows which services have been made available (through the Sharing pane) and which specific applications have been either allowed or denied incoming access. As in Leopard, "essential services" (Bonjour, DHCP, and IPsec) are always allowed to accept incoming connections regardless of user settings, but you can now block access to File Sharing and other services.
Note: If you install Snow Leopard over an existing Leopard system, it will pick up your basic firewall settings (along with many other settings). However, if you do a clean install to a blank or erased disk, Snow Leopard will set the firewall to OFF by default, just as Leopard did
In all, the Snow Leopard firewall is not a big change from Leopard, but it's a step forward for clarity. If you're looking for something beefier and more flexible, you do have some third-party firewalls to choose from, such as Open Door Networks' DoorStop X Security Suite. (Open Door's notes on the Snow Leopard firewall are a brief but interesting read, as well.)

  • SBS 2011 reports firewall disabled as "critical", how to ignore?

Sick of this "error".  I turned the Windows Firewall off. Don't need it. How do i get the console to ignore this state and stop reporting it as a problem.
Please don't spew the partly line at me, all the pros know windows firewall is a major PITA to be avoided at all costs. The network has a WAN hardware firewall, and AV inside the LAN.

Feel free to think you know better about firewalls, but knowing
EXACTLY what application is going out of WHAT port ensures that when
there's unwanted processes that I have a better handle on my internal
security.  An external firewall is NOT the same thing as an internal
firewall.  And the sooner all of you guys think you know better
especially as we're doing more cloud stuff the better off we'll all be.
Now to your ask.  I'm forgetting off the top of my head if it's
responding to the service not running (in which case go into the network
tab, and configure the alerts for running services and untick the
windows firewall service monitoring that it's doing) or if it's reacting
to an eventid  -- if it's that you can used
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2012/01/16/managing-event-alerts-in-your-reports-an-sbs-monitoring-feature-enhancement.aspx
to edit your reports to get it to ignore the alert.
If either one doesn't help holler back, but understand that posting in a
forum and insulting everyone in the process isn't exactly the greatest
way to expect help around here.
You are new to this forum and I'd like to urge you to be a bit kinder to
those here that just come to help people.  Mohammed was not a troll.

  • When uploading photos to Photobucket or Imgur or select forums either nothing happens at all or I get the "connection was reset" error. I have no problem uploading photos to other forums and FB. Firewall disabled, Spyware Doctor OFF, UAC off. Win 7-64.

I have cleared the cache and history on both IE and firefox. When I try to upload photos to Photobucket, I get "IOException" and when I try to upload photos to paleoplanet (yuku) I get the "The connection was reset" firefox error. I can upload photos to FB and other forums just fine. I tried to use Imgur instead of Photobucket and I get a similar failure.

    Hi Trond,
Extremely helpful observations here. Am sure quite some folks will hit this thread!

  • Cannot download FF7.0. Have tried several times with firewall disabled. Any suggestions?

Windows XP Ver 5.0, Dell desktop, checked under updates and it says that my current version 3.6.23 is the most current with no updates. Tried manual installation of version 7.0 and it just says that it was saved and is safe. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you

Solution found. Open up the download center on your computer, find the download and click run. Works like a charm. I found several copies (7 to be exact) of the FF download.

  • RV042 Port forwarding stops working when Firewall is enabled

    Hey all,
I have a RV042 router on a single WAN and an internal LAN. I have configured port forwarding as follows:
    HTTP[TCP/80~80]->10.0.0.6
    HTTPS[TCP/443~443]->10.0.0.6
    IMAP[TCP/143~143]->10.0.0.5
    IMAP SSL[TCP/993~993]->10.0.0.5
    SMTP SSL[TCP/587~587]->10.0.0.5
Everything works just fine when I have the firewall DISABLED. However, when I enable it the behaviour is erratic. 1 out of 10 attempts to connect to ANY port forwarded works. Almost all attempts time out.
Notice that this happens even if using only the default firewall rules (which should be bypassed by the port forwarding as I read in other posts).
My second try was to create firewall rules manually, overriding the default ones. I tried adding rules from source WAN1 (where my connection is) to ANY and to SINGLE IP's on every port. Nothing seems to work.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, this is really bugging me. I had to turn the firewall off so we can access our servers from outside the office. This shouldn't have to be done.
Do you know anything I could try?
    Best regards,
    Theo
    EDIT:
Just found out that my firewall is getting LOTS and LOTS of Blocked - SYN Flood entries. I think this is why we are having trouble with the firewall. Could this be the problem? I have no idea where all these SYN packets are coming from since they appear with spoofed IPs or come from different bots all over.

Hi Theo, if you want to over ride the default state table, you need to first make firewall rules to block all access then make your permission rules.
    Such an example would be-
    Action Deny
    Service All
    Source interface WAN
    Source IP any
    Destination IP any
    Save
    Action Permit
    Service RDP
    Source interface WAN
    Source IP -xx.xx.xx.xx
    Destination IP - xx.xx.xx.xx
    Save
As for your concern about the syn flood, it can be a likely cause of your problems. Does the logging facility of the router give any indications?

  • Wi-Fi Music Sync/Firewall Issue

I have been struggling with the Wifi Music Sync on my new Blackberry Torch for almost two weeks.  After I uninstalled my third-party firewall (CA Security Suite) and doing a fresh install of BlackBerry Desktop and re-installing Wifi Music Sync on the Torch, I was finally able to connect and to sync wirelessly with Window Firewall running.
I very carefully noted the settings on Windows Firewall, making sure that TCP and UDP for ports 4481 and 4482 were allowed.  When I re-installed CA Security, I made the settings exactly the same as they were in the Windows Firewall (unless I missed something, but I was awfully thorough).  I also made sure that Blackberry Desktop (and the rest of the .exe files) were granted access.  It seems that no matter what I do, I can't get wireless music sync to run with CA Security Suite.
I've gone through a lot of headaches with CA's firewall before, and I'm on the verge of dumping it for something easier to configure.  But does anyone have any idea whether there's something crucial I've missed?
I have no problem syncing using the USB cable, but this is frustrating me.

    OK, update.
I got the solution by posting at the CA Security Suite forums.  The solution involves changing a single registry key for the firewall.
Once I knew what to do, it took me five minutes, and after days of frustration, I am able to wirelessly sync.
Anyone else having this issue, please post, and I will be glad to share the solution.  So far as I know this only fixes the problem where the CA firewall is configured correctly, but the sync won't work even with the firewall disabled.

  • Xserves blocking all ports upon reboot [Firewall issue]

Almost every time I need to shut down/restart my new Intel Xserves, they block all their ports upon reboot and I can't access my SAN or VNC into the servers (every network port/fiber port gets blocked). I found the solution for this is to run:
    -sudo serveradmin stop ipfilter
-and then reboot and then everything is fine again, strangely.
-However if I keep the firewall disabled (as a temp fix) my client machines cannot access the internet or LDAP.
I was just wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this odd glitch and how to stop it from happening. It's not too much of a big deal at the moment since I'm on campus but in the future I will not be and I'd have to travel up here to fix it.
Is this a problem with OSX Server?
    Message was edited by: evets90

If this is two systems and involves a disk wipe and install hasn't cured it, then this is usually not the servers, but something else on the network that's common.  Though I don't have a way to explain all of what you're describing, and particularly the effects on the "fiber ports".  This effects the fibre channel (optical) SAN ports?  That's definitely odd.  What happens?  Or do you have fiber-optic network connections?
How are you testing for blocked ports here?  Using dig and ping and related tools, or using a higher-level application?
I have seen cases where some firewall process goes nuts and clogs up a server.  But that's not usually both servers.
Check the server logs for any related details, and see if there are any rogue CPU-bound processes.
And check the local area network for problems with DNS services, with errors with IP routing, with errors around subnet routing configuration (use unique IP addresses in distinct subnets for both controllers, unless you're using link aggregation), etc.

  • Stop Windows Firewall on Windows 2003 R2 : impacts ?

    Hello,
I would like to stop the Windows Firewall on my Windows 2003 R2 servers.
I would like to knows the impacts of the change ?
I already read that Windows Event Collector must be stopped...
    Regards,

    Hi,
If you have Windows Firewall disabled, then Windows Firewall cannot block network traffic any more, ports neither.
You should check all the computers which are acting as Event Sources for Windows Event Collector Services, any computer which has Windows Firewall configured could generate the error
you are facing. In addition, IP sec policy could be blocking network traffic, too.
