Firewall necessary for Point to Point internet connections?

Firewall necessary for Point to Point internet connections? We have multiple point to point t1 connections to our sites and was wondering if a firewall should be in place to filter traffic. We are also implenting a microwave t1 from a service provider and was wondering if firewalls would be needed for just this or the wired as well. According to the microwave company no firewalls are needed. Do i really want to leave security in the hands of the ISP?

Matt,
If you are buying private line T1 service from a carrier that connects 2 of your sites you would not use a firewall. Your traffic is never mixed with any other traffic. If your data is very sensitive, or if you have to comply with Payment Card Industry standards then you might want to encrypt your data, but a firewall would still not be necessary.
If you have a T1 connecting you to the Internet for Web browsing etc then you very much do need a firewall.

  • Firewall Necessary for iMac?

My sister just got one of the new iMacs. She's on a cable Internet connection so I'm wondering what the easiest way to protect her new iMac would be? Should she get a router to serve as a firewall, or is there some effective Firewall software?
    Thanks.
    -Ray

I edited above to reflect software. Certainly being behind a router firewall in combination with Tiger's built-in firewall should make her rest easy. I say it is overkill - others might argue with that.
Running the internal firewall in stealth mode ensures that no unwanted traffic can even verify that her computer exists. And unchecking all the ports and service boxes denies any incoming network communication to her machine.

  • Firewall blocks some services when sharing internet connection

    Hello,
I have some issues regarding internet sharing that I hope someone could successfully troubleshoot :
    2 computer, iMac G5 2.0 and an original "17 PowerBook G4 1.0, both running 10.4.7.
The iMac is connected to the internet via Ethernet and shares its connection with the PB using the Airport.
The problem is that when the Firewall is enabled (just using the built-in one) the shared connection is limited for only few services :
Web browsing, iPhoto and iTunes Bonjour sharing, Apple Remote Desktop all work smoothly while iChat, MSN Messenger, Bittorrent clients can't connect and Mail can't go Online (can't connect to my Gmail accounts). Since even enabling all default services in the list doesn't help the only solution is to completely disable the Firewall in the iMac. When the Firewall is off everything goes back to normal.
I tried to isolate the problem but I can't get my finger on the right ports to open.
I tested sharing the connection through Firewall instead but it's the same so It's definitely not related to the type of connection used to connect the two computers one to the other. It is strictly related to the Firewall.
I found two Apple documents :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107653
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107594
I carefully followed the instructions but it didn't resolve the problem.
From reading the first document I learnt that port 443 is related to the Secure Sockets Layer service so I searched Apple document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106439 for other ports related to that service but since I'm not an expert I couldn't figured it out right by myself.
Setting for the iMac side are as followed :
Network panel : Airport is active. (as recommended in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107594 I set Airport to the highest port priority).
Sharing panel/Services : Personal web sharing is set to ON. As I mentioned before even enabling all default services in the list doesn't help.
Sharing panel/Internet : Internet sharing is ON. "Share your connection from" is set to Airport. "To computers using" : Airport checkbox checked. I tried the Firewall option instead as well.
Appleshare is ON and automatically configured (zero configuration in the Firewall) on both macs.
Ports for iChat, MSN and Gmail on the iMac side are open. iMac has no problem to connect to these services directly.
On the PB side turning the Firewall on or off resulted the same.
Could someone please help me to configure the Firewall so it won't have to be always turned off?
    Your help is much appreciated

In the Sharing pane of System Preferences, click the Advanced button under the Firewall tab, enable firewall logging, and then try using those services on the other computer. When done, check the firewall log and look for the number after the : in the logged entries; this is a port number. Knowing the IP address of the other machine will help determine which entries were produced by it as opposed to ones which came from the Internet; this is visible in the Network pane of System Preferences.

  • Is there an solution for the wi-fi internet connectivity using a MBP?

I have frustration while trying to stay connected to the internet. I bought this MacBook Pro thinking the technology was far superior to other notebooks. Now I have realized the wireless connectivity issue is something tech support has been unable to solve.  This is a basic option on most new notebooks and none of the other brands in my home have this issue.  Is there any help for me or am I stuck?

Can you connect to public wifi? Have you tried updating your router's firmware? Have you tried using a different channel? What security are you using? What model router do you have?
I don't have and I am not aware of any systemic wifi connectivety issue.

  • Needed: Optimization tips from a Pro for a very slow internet connection

I am on a remote base in Iraq with about 150 people sharing a satellite connection with a 2MB pipe. It is slow. There is nothing I can do about the volume of people, QoS from the provider, and there is no competition.
Given that, I would like to know what I can tune on my machine to make the most of a slow, frustrating experience.
I have noticed although I have browser caching turned on, it appears my browsers (safari, Omni, FF) don't try t take advantage of it. They still spend 10 minutes trying to get in touch with the website and start from scratch. Is there a browser that visits it's cache first and then looks for changes? Are there settings I am overlooking that can force the browser to load from cache first and then look for differences? Are there command line parameters or configuration files I can edit and modify to make a difference for the better?
I also have a buddy running linux and he installed a DNS caching mechanism that reduced his repeat lookups from 5 seconds to 0. He also installed another website data caching mechanism that truly stores the pages of websites he frequently visits. His experience was enhanced tremendously.
What do you recommend I do from the command line and within my browsers to maximize facilities like caching to make a slow situation a little better?
I apprecite your time and advice

    Hi Sahar,
    1) To post your adsl line statistics you can be connected to the home hub or router via wireless.
Below is some information on how to obtain your adsl line stats. You can also see this link here ADSL Statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link
    2) To run and post the results of a BT Wholesale Speed Test it is recommended to do this with a wired ethernet connection, as a WiFi connection can be effected by other electronic devices in your property.
It is also best to have a landline phone of some sort, even if you don't use it, at is is a very handy tool to test your landline for any noise.
As any noise on your landline can dramatically reduce your broadband performance.
You can get a cheap corded landline phone from most electronic stores or online.
They are also good in emergencies when there is a power cut as a corded landline phone will still work.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers

  • Firewall rules for a IPSec Tunnel mode connection

I'm using Windows 7 Embedded with a Tunnel mode IPSec Connection. Are firewall rules applied before the traffic is decrypted or after? In other words, will I be able to apply firewall rules to allow only certain application traffic within the tunnel? Any
    KB article would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

When VPN traffic comes through the firewall it is still encrypted and encapsulated. The firewall will only see the data in the container, not the encrypted payload. So the short answer is no.

There are no Mac viruses in the wild... it's not a virus.
Before you erase the hard disk and reinstall the Mac OS X, run Disk Utility from your install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If the hard disk appears to be ok and there's plenty of free disk space then do the Erase and Install, instructions here...

  • This may sound dumb, but is there an app or a monthly subscription to carry wi-fi or internet connection. so i dont lose connection when i leave my house. want internet connection at all time

I have an ipod touch 5th gen.  storage capacity is 27.9 / 23.3 available.  IOS 7.1.2    model # ME978LL/A.   My question is, now this may sound dumb. But i was wanting to know if there is a app or a monthly subscription to have internet connection or wi-fi at all times instead of just shutting my ipod off very few apps work without internet connection almost dosen't seem worth 300 dollars.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR INFO.

Your internet connection depends on access to a wifi network. When you leave your house you go out of range of your own network, so the only way to connect is to find a free or paid public wi-fi service in the location you are in at the time; the alternative is to use your iPhone for what is called 'tethering' (providing a wifi signal you iPod can connect to) but it you have an iPhone you would want to use that anyway (and many service providers don't allow it - in any case it comes expensive as you are using a mobile data connection).

  • Windows XP Internet Connection

I have Windows XP and MAC OS on my MacBook Pro. For some reason the internet connection only works on the MAC OS portion. I've tried using the control panel options to detect my wireless connection and connect to the other computer in the house (which is connected to the modem and router), but still no luck. Any suggestions?

    Hi
Not sure if this will help, but I managed to solve this problem just now on my Mac Pro (running Windows XP SP2)
I have my network connections set to a fixed IP address (under tcp/ip settings). I have to do this because the MP is part of a Windows domain. I wasn't getting any internet either until I checked and saw that I had the wrong ip address entered. When I changed it to the proper one (that the Domain knows about) the internet worked.
The default is to have the DNS give you an ip address, but you might want to try a fixed ip and see if that solves the problem.

  • Nokia 1020 - any way to get an internet connection...

There doesn't seem to be any way to get networking via BT.
As a possibly separate issue, I can connect to my Nokia 808 over BT and they pair up OK, but the 1020 doesn't see any network, dial-up or any other service like that in the 808.
Every windows laptop and even a win8.0 Lenovo tablet can connect to the 808 over BT, and all but win8.x devices can also do it over wifi (Joikuspot). Why can't the win8.1 Nokia phone do this?

In that case, what methods *are* available on the 1020 for getting an internet connection, other than using
    - built-in GSM/3G/4G, or
    - built-in WIFI (infrastructure mode only)
Can one do it via USB?
Why is adhoc WIFI or bluetooth insecure, for a personal temporary internet connection, from another device, used typically while travelling and used to make sure that roaming costs are contained within the one device on which there is a decent roaming data package?
Currently the only way I see is a 3G-WIFI modem (e.g. the E585) with a locally puchased data SIM inside it, but such deals are available only in some countries in Europe. They also tend to be really difficult to purchase e.g. in Greece you spend an hour or two in a phone shop, proving your identity with a passport and other documents.
Was this done because the networks (who own the phone shops) insisted on it, as a condition of carrying the phone in their shops?

  • Why does restoring an iOS device kill my home internet connection?

I never noticed this happening before iOS 5. Every time I restore an iOS device (iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 1), all goes well up until I click 'restore from backup', then iTunes starts chugging away like normal but my internet connection drops. I checked other devices in the house and they lose their internet connection as well. If I shut off the modem and router for two minutes, the internet connection comes right back.
This happens if I try the restore from a Win7 Dell desktop connected via ethernet and when I try it from a Compaq Win7 laptop via wifi.
I'm not sure if Comcast is throttling connections to iTunes or what. The iOS software downloads fine (800 MB in 11 minutes). Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal but I'm worried what kind of effect losing internet midway through a restore process might have on the device.

  • Help Menu Quits when using Internet Connect

When a new user account (with admin. priveleges) is opened, the help menu functions perfectly. After connecting to the Internet (modem) the help menu will not function. (can't get any response on any underlines or ? window). I've tried the file deletions suggested in theXlab document, checked the internet connection using "ping' report with no luck. No 3rd party add-ons. I can use any program and return to help and it is operable, until I connect to the internet.
To again get to help, I must create a new user account. This restores the help for tryouts until invoking internet connect. Using OSX 10.4.5. Any suggestions. Apple phone support is referring this to some tech support person.
Am I alone with this problem???
