Firewall Notification: Block or Allow?

My Firewall notification pops up saying that computer fd00:6587:... is trying to access my awacsd on my computer. I've been clicking block every time it appears but then another box appears saying SymUIAgent wants to make changes, to type my password to allow. I've just been clicking cancel. Should I be clicking allow when the first box appears?

Thanks, hatter. I forgot to mention I am using the Airport Extreme. I see options for logging, but I want to PREVENT connections before they happen, i.e., an Allow/Block dialog popup or creating rules themselves based on IP addresses. I don't see options for that.

  • Firewall is blocking SSH when it shouldn't be

I had a [problem with SSH|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1990417&tstart=0] on my iMac not long ago where SSH was being blocked by the Leopard firewall, even though it is configured to allow it through. I have the firewall configured as "Set access for specific services and applications" and "Remote Login (SSH)" appears on the list automatically since Remote Login is enabled on the Sharing tab of System Prefs.
The first time I had the problem I solved the problem by turning off the Leopard firewall ("allow all incoming") and then turning it back on again (in "specific services" mode). I thought it was just a one time glitch being the first time I'd ever tried getting SSH to work. After that it worked great until restarting my iMac yesterday when the firewall started blocking SSH again. Once again, turning off the firewall and then turning it back on again resolved the problem.
Any ideas? Anyone had similar problems?

Most routers thesedays even consumer routers have a stateful packet inspection firewall and also NAT.
With NAT unless you specifically open ports from the router to your mac then the outside world cannot access any of the services on your mac.
If you want to use SSH from the outside world then you would have to portforward tcp port 22 from the router to your mac. But this is not a problem if you use a strong password eg not a dictionary word or name or better still you can turn off password authentication in your ssh configuration and use public key access only.
So if you have not opened up ports on the router then your application firewall is only preventing access from other computers on your local network.
Call me paranoid, but I don't know anything about how solid the router firewall is, whereas I have much more confidence in the OS X firewall.
If you are savvy enough to know about and how to use SSH then it should be really easy for you to find out how good your router's firewall is. Understanding a router's web interface is far less demanding than learning how to use SSH.
In most cases you simply put the router's IP address into your web browser and you can see all of its services.
But something you should be aware of it is not really incoming connections you should be concerned about. It is outgoing connections that require more control.
For example if you were socially engineered by a website or elsewhere and they convinced you to install a trojan or spyware on your mac then your Mac's Application firewall would not stop these processes dialing out.
Little Snitch from obdev is an application aware firewall that controls your outgoing connections and is far more useful than the mac's application firewall on a desktop computer behind a router.
Apart from that, I'd really like to understand what's going on!
Did you try nerowolfe's suggestion of creating a test user account and login in as that user and see if the problem is still there?

  • Windows Firewall has blocked Adobe Muse

I open Adobe Muse for the first time and I'm trying to use it, after going thru some updates and questions I get Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program. Does Adobe Muse need to have an Internet or network connection for anything at all before I publish? the Publisher is Unknown according to the alert I get from Windows. Do I need to check the box for Private networks or Public networks, I couldn't find anything related to it on Adobe Help and when I searched for Firewall on Adobe Muse Help I get results for other applications instead that I don't use like Flash Media Encoder.

Yes, you would need to tick both the checkboxes and click Allow Access after that.

  • Airtunes failes in 10.4.11 with -3256 unknown error - firewall not blocking

Until this morning I was able to connect to three remote airtunes speakers from my MBP running the latest iTunes. I'm on 10.4.11, and the firewall is configured to allow both UDP and the iTunes Music sharing.
    Any idea what's changed?

I have exactly the same problem on OSX 10.4.11 and Safari 3. Outgoing traffic from Safari 3 is blocked to some non-standard ports, including port 563 that I need to use. I get the same error message as the first poster.
Firewall doesn't help - firewall talks about INCOMING connections, while the problem with Safari 3 and ports is about OUTGOING connections.
This is very similar to what Firefox is doing. Firefox also blocks connections to "nonstandard" ports, but in Firefox, you can manually override it in configuration by going to "about:config" and changing the value of option "network.security.ports.banned.override" and manually entering the port values that you want to access. It then works. (See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.security.ports.banned.override for more info.)
In case of Safari 3, I don't see an easily-accessible UI option to enter nonstandard port numbers in some sort of whitelist. So you can say that as of now, if you want to use Safari 3 to access a web app running on some nonstandard port, you just can't do that? Or is there a way in the UI or elsewhere to edit the port whitelist/blacklist?

  • How do I allow pop ups in safari without being asked "block or allow" ?

I'm assuming that when I turned on the setting in Safari to allow pop-ups, I wouldn't have to tell the browser to allow or block every single pop up after that.  Is there a combination of settings to make allow pop-ups without the additional "block or allow" message from popping up before the pop up window.
I used a 3rd party web application that has been coded for their drill-down messages to be displayed in another screen and I have no control over that.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Well, not that helpful unless you can determine if that window is coming from Safari or iOS or from whatever the other "3rd party web application" you were talking about.
If you don't want to play in that pool, then assume that iOS and/or Safari are working incorrectly. Your Users Guide has a whole chapter (at the end) devoted to what you do when things aren't going well, generally following the sequence of
Restart - red slider, then boot up again
Force Quit apps - either via Sleep/Wake followed by Home, or via Recents Tray
Reset - hold Home & Sleep/Wake to force reboot
Reset iPad Settings - Settings > General >Reset
Erase All Content -   same as above
Restore iPad Software - iTunes or iOS 5 equivalent
You start at #1 and work your way through until the issue you're seeing goes away. If you get through all of the steps and it still doesn't work, you're pretty much out of gas and have to start talking to Apple.
    So .. start at #1.

    Hi
I need to disable only inactive notifications firewall in the action center PCs through GPO.
I have seen several posts and it seems possible disable by GPO only all notifications in the action center and not only firewall notifications.

  • Major annoyance: iTunes 10 persistent firewall notification upon launch

Is there any way to resolve the iTunes firewall notification, as shown in the attached screenshot? Obviously, iTunes is set to accept incoming connections in my firewall settings. However, the message keeps appearing every time I launch iTunes.
    http://cl.ly/2gan

right, a quick forum search brought up a number of threads tackling your issue. you may want to browse through those for possible solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=c153&search=Go&q=incomingnetworkconnections
as an aside, why do you have your firewall enabled ? IMHO, if you are behind a router firewall (as is standard on modern Apple routers), have your network secured with WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers, there is no need to have the software firewall on your Mac enabled.
anyhoo, you might want to shut the firewall down just for troubleshooting purposes.
    good luck !

  • Cannot sync; receiving a message that firewall is blocking port 3689

I am receiving an error message when I try to sync my Apple TV. The error message says that a firewall is blocking port 3689. I have checked the settings I can find, but have been unable to find the source of the problem. Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you resolve this?

Thanks Chenks! At least I know I'm not nuts. I have done exactly what you suggest. Itunes is in the list and I went the extra step and added port 3689. Still no luck. I've checked my McAfee settings and anything else I can find. I am at the point of resetting everything to the defaults to see if I can get around this. This is so odd as the Apple TV has been working beautifully, then, BAM! An error code and I can't synce.

  • Is 'SQLCMD.EXE' the SQL Server 2008 executable to be added to a Firewall 'Inbound Rule' to allow remote access?

I would like to add a new Firewall 'Inbound Rule' to allow remote access by
    SQL Server 2008.
SQL Server Management Studio shows two TCP/IP instances, both of which are Enabled.
One uses port 1433 and the other uses ‘TCP Dynamic Ports’.
In  SQL Server, the server has ‘Allow remote connections to this server’ checked.
My Firewall allows port 1433 for the one TCP/IP instance.
Since the other instance is dynamic, I would like to add a new
Firewall 'Inbound Rule' to allow the SQL Server executable to run.
I’ve read that the SQL Server executable is commonly named SQLSERVR.EXE, but there is no such file on my laptop.
I’m assuming the executable that needs to be added to the Firewall 'Inbound Rule'
    is SQLCMD.EXE (in the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn).
Can anyone please confirm this?  (I'm running Windows 7).  Thanks.

    Hi Bontrager,
    Firstly, please run
Discovery Report to the detect the existing SQL Server 2008 instance. If SQL Server 2008 is installed properly on your machine, the sqlservr.exe should exists in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<instance_name>\MSSQL\Binn.
Secondly, if SQL Server 2008 is configured to use dynamic port, it is difficult to configure the firewall to enable access to the correct port number because the port selected might change every time that the Database Engine is started.
Therefore, if a firewall is used, please reconfigure the SQL Server 2008 to use the static TCP port by using SQL Server 2008 Configuration Manager.
For more information, please review this
article. After that, you can add the port number in firewall inbound rule.
Thirdly, if you want to connect to  SQL Server 2008 from outside the firewall by instance name, SQL Server Browser should be turned on and you'll have to allow the SQL Server Browser through the firewall, which is UDP port 1434.

  • Cannot connect to the iTunes store. Get 'Error 11222'. Claims it is being blocked by Windows Firewall when it is allowed through.

When an external application tries to connect to it through iTunes I get 'Error: 11222'. When I try to connect through the iTunes app it just continuously loads but nothing appears. Diagnostics says that Windows Firewall (Which is being managed by McAfee) is blocking it, even though it is allowed through both firewalls I have. Even when I turn WF off iTunes claims it is being blocked by it. I have done almost everything Apple's support pages have suggested but nothing has worked. I'm using it on an Acer Aspire laptop, and the main PC can use iTunes without trouble so it isn't the ISP. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes twice. Here is a full diagnostics:
