Firewall prevents downline Macs on airport network from using e-mail, ichat

If I turn the firewall "ON" on the gateway iMac of a airport network, then the downline machines ARE able to access the internet through internet sharing, but are NOT able to access e-mail or use iChat. I am not using a router or airport base station. The gateway machine is connected directly to the cable modem. What am I doing wrong?

iChat Bonjour box was already checked, but that refers only to chatting between machines on the same network, right? As for the mail ports; I created them as described on the gateway machine, turned the firewall on and still get no iChat or mail activity on the downline machine. Other suggestions? The gateway machine is an Intel iMac and the downline is G5 iMac.

  • Cannot join time capsule airport network from iPad 2 or iPhone 4

I have recently setup a new time capsule airport base station network with my new iMac (27-inch, late 2012) running OSX 10.8.2. Wi-Fe network works fine for internet access and printing from the iMac but I cannot join the wi-fi network from our iPad 2 or iphones. The network is seen in the wi-fi setup when wi-fi is turned on with the ipad and phone but does not establish a connection. An IP address and subnet mask show under the DHCP settings but the connection is not established. (Continuous revolving wheel).
    Any help would be appreciated.

The airport utility in Mountain Lion is a toyland version.. see bottom of post for installing v5.6 which improves the ability to actually make the TC do what you want.
For whatever reason the iphone/ipad seem sensitive to wireless channels.. which Apple auto rotate.. I think it is bluetooth connection stuff.
Anyhow jump in and set the following.
Wireless should have strictly SMB names.. short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security.
Lock the wireless channel for 2.4ghz.. try in the following order.. 11, 6, 1 (those are the only non-overlapping channels) you can try in turn for which is best but if 11 works well stick to it.. Outside USA you can also use 13.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Accessing Airport network from Windows PC

My son is visiting and we cannot get his PC to find and sign on to airport network. Anything special required to do that?

He's tried the password multiple times and cannot get on the network. We have four other laptop PC's in the house this weekend and all others are accessing with no problem. I assume there is something in his settings that is wrong, but I have no PC knowledge as I am a forever Apple user.
The network appears in the list of available networks along with others in the neighborhood, but when he enters the password, it just continually churns away with a green bar scrolling across the screen saying "waiting to connect" (or some similar message).
    Thanks.

  • HP Photosmart 7520 using ePrint app on iPad - eliminate others on network from using printer

Other than "parental control" how can I prevent other wireless network users in the house from using my printer? My dearest always leaves the paper tray empty and he has a perfectly good printer connected to his desktop computer downstairs. He's too lazy to order cartridges. I'd rather he didn't know that I blocked him.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi beckys2000,
I see that you have extra printer usage you would like to control, unfortunately, there is nothing I can locate in the printers setting that will allow you to discretely or other wise, put the printer on lock down.
You could however, if you have your dearest's credit card, order the ink straight from your HP ePrint App on your iPad. Touch the SureSupply icon at the bottom of the home page, follow the first time setup, and choose the best deal on ink.
I know it is not the perfect answer, but at least once the inks arrive, you get your printer to your self again.

  • Region Coding limit prevents Mac owners traveling abroad from using DVD

I have a friend from the US that travels, works and lives in the US and UK. She has a current Macbook and when she is in London, a DVD bought there brings up the 'Set DVD region' message. This tells her she can only change the region code 5 times before it is stuck on the last one.
This is truly dumb. Windows doesn't do this and she just 'switched' to Mac, not knowing that the Macbook was so limited.
Is it possible to ask Apple for a software or firmware fix so that a Macbook owner that travels internationally can actually use legitimately purchased regionally coded DVDs without their Macbook going toast?

you've posted in the iDVD section of this board, which is an iLife app to create 'homebrewn' DVDs.. not the DVDplayer app.-..
... This is truly dumb. .. Is it possible to ask Apple for a software or firmware fix so that ...
ask the Movie Making Industry to get rid of region-coding.. an 'out of the box' Windows has the same limitations, but for sure, there're zillions of 'hacks' which override that protection.. illegally, just to mention that.

  • Removing preferred airport networks from 10.3

    Gday All,
Just thought Id post this because I searched all over the web and couldnt find anyone that had the same problem.
Usually to remove a preferred network in 10.3 you can go into keychain access and remove the airport password (admin password required)
Not with this 10.3 iBook G4 running 10.3.9. When I went looking for the password that is usually stored in Keychain Access (Applications:Utilities:Keychain Access) Nothing there!!! Id done this many times previously with no problem.
So I started getting suspicious that it was a software problem so I downloaded two new securtiy updates and an airport update (4.2 I think), rebooted the machine and the airport password mysteriously appeared in the keychain so I could delete it as I normally would.
Im not sure wheather it was the security updates or the airport update that fixed the problem. Hope this helps somebody in the future. If anybody finds out exactly which update fixes the problem, please post in this thread. Cheers.

It seems this is issue is a bug and can be resolved my installing the latest security update.

  • How do you prevent HP Deskjet IA 4615 printer from using colour to print black!!!!????

I just recently bought this great All-in-One HP DeskJet IA 4615 as I've needed all the other functions besides printing for a while now. Imagine my horror when trying to specifically save on using colour when printing a newsletter to about 900 clients by putting elements of colour into a predominately black design...and then wondering why all the colours are going down so fast...then discovering that the printer is USING THE COLOURS TO PRINT BLACK!!!!
I have looked all over for switching this off...but haven't been able to find the answer?
    Is this standard?
In that case I'm EXTREMELY disappointed to find that HP uses this tactic to get you to use ALL the colour cartridges!!!
Please, if anyone has the answer for me...let me know!!!!
This is NOT a great way to find out you can't save ink no matter what you do! I hope one can...redeem my love for HP, PLEASE!

    Hey MarleMac,
What is the Operating System of the computer you are using the Deskjet Ink Advantage 4615 with?
If you are using a Windows PC, then open the Devices and Printers folder.   Right click on the printer and select Printing Preferences.  If you want to print a black and white document using black ink only, click the Advanced button. From the Print in Grayscale drop-down menu select Black Ink Only, then click the OK button.

  • How can I stop someone from using my mail id to send junk mail?

It does not happend all that often, but occasionaly I get a message that someone (who I don't know and is not in my address book) received an email from me that I did not send. Is there a way to stop that or protect my from that happening?

There may not be too much that you can do since it's most likely not originating from your email account. There are a slew of Windows viruses and worms that scan the infected computer for email addresses and then send out emails with spoofed From: addresses that it finds.
Just one example of a virus generated email taken from Symantec's website
    English:
    From: Spoofed
Subject: I've_got your EMail on my_account!
    Message:
    Hello,
First, Very Sorry for my bad English.
Someone is sending your private e-mails on my address.
It's probably an e-mail provider error!

At time, I've got over 10 mails on my account, but the recipient are you.
I have copied all the mail text in the windows text-editor for you & zipped then.
Make sure, that this mails don't come in my mail-box again.
    bye

Have you ever responded? The email that you're receiving may even be from a similiar virus.

I don not remember the passwd or the user name for an email account.  how do I reset this account?

OK, hubby figured this out for me.  Apple support were nice people but could not get the answer.  Network Solutions online info was incorrect or incomplete. I do not remember exactly.  However, the email that Network sent was EXACT.   No info as to password reset but they gave the correct port numbers and .....Connection!

  • Running Firefox 4.0 on Mac OSX 10.6.6, using ATT mail, when I create a new email I get a browser message saying, "This page requires a plugin that can only run in 32-bit mode," and I have to restart Firefox in 32-bit mode. Is there any way around this?

I am assuming the plugin that the Firefox message is referring to is for attaching a file to the email. I say this because at the bottom of a new email it has a link that says "Attach files more easily" which, when you click it, takes you to a setup process where you download an att updater. I ran that and it did seem to change anything. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to make Firefox handle this page without having to restart in 32-bit mode every time.

That means that you need to run Firefox in 32 bit mode if you want to use that plugin.
    # Close Firefox
    # Open the Applications folder in Finder
    # Right click or control-click the Firefox.app icon
    # Select "Get Info"
    # Select "Open in 32-bit mode"
    # Close the "Firefox Info" window
    # Restart Firefox

  • My airport network won't accept my password....

Help!! I have a modem-wireless router set-up at my apartment. Recently the interent went out in the complex, so I tried other networks, but when I went back to mine and tried to enter the password, the airport would not recognize it. I know the the password is correct and my roommate who has a PC tried it and it worked fine. Do I have a setting or preference on that is preventing my airport network from accepting the password? Please say someone knows what I'm talking about!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Lauren

It sounds like your wireless network is using WEP for encryption. If so, the following Apple article should prove helpful. If you're using AirPort software earlier than v2.1, (& trying to connect to a non-AirPort wireless router) you may just need to either add a "$" before a hex key or enclose a ASCII key in quotation marks...depending on which key type you are using.

  • Kechain does not show Airport Network in All Categories

I want to find out what my password is for a network so i can hook up another computer. I'm using a mac powerbook G4.
When I go to Keychain Access, firstly, the Network does not show up at all , even though i am connected to Internet. When I type in the name of the network up by the hourglass/search input, then it comes up, but when I chec 'show password' box, it rejects my user password. i have tried to 'show password' for other Airport Networks, by using the exact same user PW, and it works, but not for the actual NW i am on and want to find pwrd for. Any ideas ? Thanks. I have restarted the puter, network still doesn't show up unless i

    Hi,
When I go to Keychain Access, firstly, the Network does not show up at all
Open Keychain Access. Select Passwords on the left.
In the search field top right corner of that window type in: airport
Press return or enter on your keyboard. That will highlight your network keychain.

  • HT1937 My new 5c is activated with Verizon - I can send receive calls, txts, and data (internet). My problem is that the 5c keeps giving me pop up warnings that the phone is not activated.  This is also preventing me from using the vmail

5c is activated and live on Verizon. Call, txts, and data.  Issue is that 5c thinks that is is NOT activated - keeping getting pop up warnings.  Operationally this prevents me from using v-mail via iPhone app - i need to dial Verizon directly.  This phone is new and activated yesterday. Any ideas?

Contact Verizon to troubleshoot the issue with them.

  • Where is the MailAccounts.plist stored for a network user account using Apple Mail on Snow Lion?

Where is the MailAccounts.plist file stored for a network user using Apple Mail on Snow Leopard?  It appears one of my users has managed to do something to their mail account as Apple Mail will no longer close once opened and the Sent Folder has a perpetual spinning pinwheel.

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.

  • Dragging url from Safari to Mail creates web shortcut attachment

I was accustomed to dragging the url from Safari's address bar into an open mail and getting a page title and url text inserted.
This was incredibly useful for sending links of pages to mailing lists in response to questions.
Now in Leopard, dragging the url from Safari's address bar to an open mail creates a web shortcut attachment.
I can see this might be useful , but in a plain text email to a mailing list it's completely useless as it gets stripped my the mailing list software.
now I have to copy and paste the url - a lot more effort and I don't get the page title anymore that way.
Please tell me there's a hidden preference setting that can let me have the old way back...
this tiny little thing is marring my otherwise happy upgrade to 10.5
I just checked this action in my virgin Tiger install on my Mac Mini and dragging from Safari to Mail, gets a plain text url, but no page title, so maybe I had some helper or other adding that little bit...
anyway, I want to drag urls to mail and get text not attachments - can anyone help me?
    thanks

I'm used to doing command-L to select the address bar, so to do command-L, command-C, click in the mail message, and hit command-V doesn't seem like much work. But that's me. I also found that if I drag a URL from the address bar it does put the link in without a web shortcut. But if I wanted to send a link in an email, I'd just hit shift-command-i, which opens a new mail with the link in it.
    Just some thoughts....
