Firewall security setting blocking Outlook Express

I'm a Verizon DSL customer with a Versalink 7500.
If I set the Firewall security setting to anything above Minimum, Outlook Express fails with the following:
The connection to the server has failed.
Account: 'verizon email', Server: 'pop.verizon.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
Suggestions?

I didn't notice that the port got changed.  In any event, I changed it back to 995 and got a similar error.
I rechecked the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box.
The "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" box is already unchecked.
Here are my OE settings.

    Hi Billee.
The problem you are seeing is due to the session downloading the emails failing to complete correctly.
Usually when a session ends, the server receives an "end" marker, and OE (or indeed other mail client programs) recognise that no more exist. The mail client then makes a note of the last email received, so that if more emails are received, and OE checks the server - OE only requests the new emails.
(It's a little more complex than that of course).
If this session fails to complete, the end signal is not received and OE can't determine an end point, so effectively doesn't set one - hence you get them all again.
It could be that a local anti-virus/firewall is interferring with the download, perhaps causing a delay - but not necessarily causing an error message to be displayed. There could be a dodgy email on the server that is failing to download, causing a timeout and eventual stop.
I don't know how easy it is, but maybe you can login to webmail and move all the Inbox emails into a new folder (make one up). It may be possible to move 1000 emails at a time into the Inbox from this new folder, then attempt a fetch from OE after each 1000. (You could practice with just a few at a time to see if this works).
Have a look here for the address book stuff :-

  • Firewall Security Set up

I have a Wrt-54G Ver 8 router. I would like to know which blocks need to be checked in the firewall security screen. On my router the filter Multicast and Filter IDENT (Port 113) are checked. Is that all that is needed? Thank you in advance for the help.

For good connectivity uncheck all possible boxes, for secure connection check all possible boxes and default is block anonymous internet requests and filter ident(port 113) checked.

  • Windows 7 Built-In Firewall Filtering Platform Blocking Outlook.exe Even Though Firewall Off

(this post was originally started here,
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-outlook/windows-7-built-in-firewall-filtering-platform/7312a367-3a9f-470a-b6c7-56c041630af1, but recommended to move to this forum)
I first encountered this problem on a Windows 7 computer running Outlook 2007 a couple of weeks ago. The system kept asking the primary user for a password to connect to our Exchange Service. The user kept typing in the correct password, but it would never
connect. Using Outlook Web Access from the same computer with the same user and password was successful, so the credentials and network connection seemed good.
After checking the Security Logs, I found pairs of Event 5152 and 5157 whenever the user tried to enter a password. Example events are listed below (although they are from the most recent incidence). I found out that the Filtering Platform is supposed to
be part of Windows Firewall, but couldn't find much other information about it. However, the Windows Firewall is turned off by Group Policy (verified by looking in the Control Panel for Window Firewall), so I didn't think it should be blocking anything. Oddly
enough, the Windows Firewall service was running on this computer, but it was running on all computers, even if they didn't have this problem.
I found that I could make the problem go away by stopping the Windows Firewall service. However, it seems odd that would be necessary. It seems a bit of a kludgy fix.
I hoped that the problem would only by on one system and could let it go for a bit. Unfortunately, I just had the problem crop up on a new Windows 7 system with Outlook 2010 installed.
At this point, I'm concerned about what might be causing it and that it might start happening on all our systems. I could stop the Windows Firewall service on all of them, but I'd like to understand what might be happening more before taking that action.
For reference, both systems have received all Automatic Updates and are running the McAfee Total Protection Service anti-virus and firewall services.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi indyvql,
"..are running the McAfee Total Protection Service anti-virus and firewall services."
    - So you've enabled McAfee firewall? If you have McAfee firewall turned on, then everything is managed by McAfee Personal Firewall which might cause the issue.
To troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest we first disable McAfee temporarily, then try again.
Also, as you've mentioned, please go ahead to have a test with just updating McAfee but not stopping the Windows Firewall service, then verify result.

  • Airport Express not recognized by Utility after changing security setting.

We use an Extreme with an Express to extend the network and run speakers. While trying to eradicate Airtunes dropouts I changed the security setting on the Express using the Airport Utility. After the update, the Express is no longer being recognized. Help!!! I've unplugged it and used the reset button to no avail. I'm a techno-dummy, so please be gentle. I really do appreciate any insight.

    Hi,
It seems you have set a too strong security on the Extreme that is not supported on the Express.
I don't know what model of Express you have so try to use a less strong security on the Extreme.
(you can find the security specs of your express on Apple's website : http://support.apple.com/specs/#airport )
As you have reset the Express... you will first have to set it up again...
P.S. : Do the connection drop problems occur on the Express and / or on the extreme ?
As security settings "should" not be the cause for WiFi connection drop, something else is.
Can you give more info on what you already tried ? Ex : Multicast Rate, Transmit Power, Use wide channels, Closed network, Use interference robustness
    Kind regards,

  • Transferring e-mails from Microsoft Outlook Express to Entourage '08

Ok, so I agreed to help my neighbor with an e-mail issue she was having. Her issue was moving all of her e-mails from her PC (on Outlook Express) to her new iMac (using Entourage '08). It's a rather complicated thing, I'm sure, and I'll try to go over everything as thoroughly, and as simply, as possible.
She has an @comcast e-mail account. She has her @comcast account set with Outlook Express, on her PC, and she is able to receive all incoming e-mails on O.E., but they disappear on the Comcast e-mail page 24 hours after she receives them.
When she purchased her iMac, the Geniuses at the retail store set up her @comcast account to Mail, and from that point, she received all NEW e-mails from her @comcast account, and this time they weren't being deleted from the Comcast page.
She asked me to transfer all of her e-mails on O.E. to Entourage (just for archiving purposes, so Mail isn't over-cluttered with a near decades worth of e-mails).
I've tried several methods, but I can't figure out how to transfer the emails from O.E. to Entourage. After an hour, or two, I realized that her old settings on O.E. were set to erase the e-mails from the Comcast server.
All in all, I need to know..... how to transfer emails from O.E. (which are deleted from the Comcast server) over to Entourage.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Here's some possibilities:
Import Outlook Express (PC) emails into Mail
Mail.app - Importing from Outlook and Outlook Express
Moving emails from Outlook Express to Mac OS X
If you do some more Google searches you may find other possibilities. You may be able to export from OE to Thunderbird on the PC, move the Thunderbird data to the OS X version of Thunderbird, then move from Thunderbird to Mail. The advantage of Thunderbird is that you can export both email and contacts from OE.

  • Can you please tell me if there is a way to put Outlook Express and a AT&T/Yahoo icons on the newest Firefox Browser??

I'd like to have these icons on the browser like I have on IE8.

    Save the ATT/Yahoo page as a Bookmark. <br />

There's a Firefox extension that allows you to add a button for opening your email program from a Firefox toolbar. <br />

Read the instructions on that page for setting up Outlook Express, as Thunderbird is the default setting in GetMail.

  • I'm using Windows XP. outlook Express hyperlinks are not working. Might Firefox be blocking the hyperlinks?

I've tried the "FIX IT" on the Microsoft website but it did not fix it. I've been in touch with my anti virus software company who assure me that their product cannot block hyperlinks. I've gone into windows folder options/ file types to check settings but they seem OK. I'm now wondering if a seting in Firefox could block the hyperlinks.

    Hi,
Many thanks to those who took the time to reply. I use Firefox as my default browser to search the internet. I use Outlook Express to download my emails. Some emails have hyperlinks. When I place the cursor over a hyperlink a (very long) web address appears at the bottom of the window but clicking on the link does nothing. I have searched the internet for possible solutions. One was that the problem was caused by my anti virus software blocking the hyperlink. My anti virus software provider excluded this. Another related to a possible problem in windows XP control panel/folder options/file types. I checked this and all was OK. A website suggested that my browser may be causing the problem. Firefox itself is my default browser and is working OK. My question is "can a setting (or something else) in Firefox block the hyperlinks in Outlook Express from working''. The problem occurs in Outlook Express but the hyperlinks have to work via Firefox to open the links which are web pages (accessed via Firefox)..

They insisted they couldnt access their bigpond email using it and have created an outlook account.email address, and now after reading this page I think I know why! They are now trying to import their old contacts. Can you advise? Their old email address was [email protected] and their new address is [email protected] Is that what they shouldve done? ie created a new email address?

  • Outlook Express is adding MY email address to Blocked Senders List

I've been getting a TON of similar spam recently (15-20)/day so I've been adding all their quite similar email addresses to the Blocked Senders List in an attempt to block
some spam. Yesterday I realized that some bcc emails I had sent to myself weren't in my Inbox. I found them in Deleted Items and I then found my email address on my own BSL. I un-blocked it and thought that would end it. Within hours, emails from myself
were again being sent to Deleted Items. I quickly scanned the BSL and didn't find my address there......... What is going on?

    Hi,
Are you using Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook?
Please note, Outlook Express is a component of IE 6.0 and fewer people use it anymore in the new century:
    Microsoft Outlook Express Support
    http://support.microsoft.com/ph/2578
If you are using Microsoft Outlook, please let me know your Outlook version and what the account type is. Exchange, IMAP, or POP3?
We may logon the Web mail to send the test email, to determine if it's Outlook Client specific.
If emails sent to yourself on web don't get moved to Deleted Items while emails sent on Outlook Client do, please disable the firewall and virus scanner integration with Outlook, then check the result:
    http://www.msoutlook.info/question/20
Please also check if you have any rules that moves your emails to Deleted Items, delete it if there is:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/manage-email-messages-by-using-rules-HA010355682.aspx
We can also check the Junk E-mail Options:
Go to HOME tab -> Junk -> Junk E-mail Options
-> Safe Senders tab, add yourself to the safe sender list, then check the result.
    Hope this helps.

  • Email Set-up...something better than Outlook Express 4.5?

    Happy New Year ~
I'm trying to set up about 3 email accounts on an OLD iBook Blueberry running OS 8.6. It has Outlook Express 4.5 installed on it, and though it did "take" one of the email addresses yesterday (it was able to download mail from the server, but I didn't test sending any mail out), it hasn't been able to send/receive at all today. I'm not real familiar with Outlook, so don't know if I'm missing something. I tried checking two boxes that said things like: "Requires secure SSL/POP" because I do have passwords that are involved in accessing the server account, but still nothing.
The computer did connect to the internet via ethernet and DSL, though, so that's not the problem.
Anyway -- after all this, I'm wondering if there's any simpler email program I can maybe try downloading and using? Or any other suggestions?
(I'm just spoiled, having been graced with an iBookG4 less than a year ago - my first Mac - and loving Panther and OS X..I'd love to upgrade to Tiger as soon as my budget allows)
Thanks for any and all insight.

    Hi aToast...
Yikes! ...your comment brings back a lot of memories - good and bad
For some reason I do remember that you shouldn't have to check off the 'Requires Secure SSL/POP'. Aside from that just make sure you have both your incoming/outgoing 'mail server' and of course your password typed correctly.
There are other programs you could try (I remember trying others but Outlook was always the best for me) ...take a look under the 'classic apps' on the Pure-Mac site for example - http://pure-mac.com/email.html
If you could get up to os 9.2.2 then try the Mozilla Suite - that would be my pick for best classic browser and email combo.

Have tried removing the one Firefox entry in Windows Firewall exceptions but this did nothing at all. Can't find anything in existing posts. Hi Lidia.C,
I understand that you are passionate about fixing this issue and I am sorry that it is so difficult to print.
It is possible to change the default program that reads pdfs if it does not work from adobe. This can be done from the "3bar" > Options > Applications menu. [[Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]
Does downloading the file and saving it first, then opening the file in another program allow you to print in the meantime?
