Firewall warnings at every application launch
Hi,
I think this problem exists ever since I upgraded my iMac from Tiger to Leopard (on my MacBook with builtin Leopard, I don't have this issue). Now it's time I try to fix it
In fact, every time I run an application with networking features like iTunes, RealPlayer, Transmission, Adium, etc., the Leopard Firewall asks me always the same question: "Do you want to allow incoming connections for this application?". Replying Allow or Deny doesn't change anything, the system repeatedly asks me the same question every time I launch these apps.
I've already tried to remove applications from the Leopard Firewall list, so they can be added again the next time I run them, but the problem comes back when I close/relaunch the apps.
Any idea about what's causing the problem?

Mine is set to: "Define access to specific services and applications". All the apps listed below have the "Allow incoming connections" setting, but some of them like iTunes and a few others keep asking me the question at startup.
If I switch to "Allow only essential services", it seems to work, but I can't fine tune my firewall settings anymore...

Reprocess every d40 raw file on every application launch
Aperture 3.1.1 reprocesses every nikon d40 raw in the library, at every application launch. I can stop it manually of course but all the files will then show "was processed using an earlier version of aperture". Needless to say this is an anoying if not unacceptable behaviour.
Is there a way around it?Have you gone through the [Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805] ? With library problems like this its a good place to start.

When I start up, EVERY application launches. How do I disable this?
I have a new macbook air: runs OSX lion.
I think this began after I installed MS office, or at the very least, has gotten worse since I installed it. There may or may not be any correlation. I have checked the preferences for all the MS office aps as well as the mac system prefs. The 'launch at startup' only has skype and itunes helper aps in it, and both are turned off, yet both still open upon startup, along with every other ap on the computer. Any suggestions?A new 'feature' of Lion is auto-resume. When you shut down your computer (or log out) a dialog box appears asking if you want to launch the programs that are currently running when you restart. The default checkmark is to auto resume and you must change the answer if you don't want them to auto-resume.
Further, by default, the Dock no longer display a little light to indicate which programs are running so when you look at the Dock you might think nothing is running. -

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

File copy in finder prevents application launches
Here's another question for people to ignore:
Despite MacOS X's alleged pre-emptive multitasking copying files in the Finder prevents new applications from launching. Case in point, I was copying about 5gb of data from my internal hard drive just now to an external drive. I decided to check my email after the copy started, but discovered I had closed Firefox. So I tried launching it. I say tried, because it just bounced in the dock for about three minutes and then sat there like a dead fish, not giving me anything but the beach ball. I force-quit Firefox and tried launching again after the copy was done. One bounce and I had a window and my home page loaded. Applications launched BEFORE the start of a copy job respond normally. I just can't launch new apps. I've used pretty much every version of MacOS X since 10.2, and this has been the way it is in every version. This leads me to assume one of two things to be true:
1. I'm the only person who's ever had this problem and that's why nothing's ever been done to fix it. Knowing my deleterious effect on any piece of technology I own, I wouldn't be surprised. I can never have nice things.
2. Apple is aware that this is an issue but has decided it's less important to fix this because it is so infrequent (and let's face it, hardly fatal) than to spend their time gussying up the OS with useless eye candy so people don't notice the warts.
So my question: How the heck do I fix this? Or do I have to simply put up with it?I am guessing that the file(s) you were copying were large, which would mean a longer delay between completed copies. The OS is multi-tasking, but various components (such as the Finder) are not multi-threaded. You can see some of the same results with launching large applications, connecting to non-existing servers or opening some web pages. It depends on the application - I hear Leopard has more multi-threaded components.

Open-With menu displays two of every application
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, there are two of every application when I right-click to "open-with" a file.

except one problem, I have no .csstore files in the Library/Caches folder, or any other caches folder on my computer (of which I am aware there are several)
I have also tried using Onyx 2.1, which has not changed anything related to this problem.It sounds like LaunchServices.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:

Hayaku - simple application launcher

Hayaku is a simple application launcher. Ideally, you bind it to a keyboard shortcut to launch rapidly a program.
You can also enter an url and your web browser will open it.
Every unique command is save in a sql table (SQLite) to be load next time you want to launch it.

Hayaku use a small database to resolve suggestion.
This database look like this:

You can build your own database (I suggest using SQLite Manager (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5817) extension for Firefox) and
add it to default hayaku DB. When you DB is complete, open a shell and add it with:
hayaku -d /path/to_db/myDB.sqlite

I hope I'm submitting this properly, I apologize if this irritates anyone because of improper etiquette. Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally? This is a condition which seemed to start just recently and abruptly. These applications reside on, and are launched from the startup drive, not from a network drive. Also, we have a NAS drive on the LAN that we connect to that also takes a minute or two to mount, when it used to (before this problem) mount on the desktop in a matter of about 5 seconds. We have three identical Mac Pros on the LAN, and they all have this problem when launching and using the above mentioned applications. When I physically unplug the network cable from the Mac, all applications launch instantly and function normally. I know very little about networks, so I can't begin to test or change any setting pertaining to our network - if that is where the problem lies. The only recent change to our network situation is that we lost or our internet and phone service due to massive flooding here in Minot, North Dakota (our ISP tells us the communication lines are under water and shorting out). But shouldn't our LAN still function even though we have lost our connection to the outside world? Thanks so much, in advance, for helping me solve this problem. Sheldon.

A slow LAN can have many things so its going slow.
1) is your lan 1gbit speed? (full duplex)
2) are the macs also 1Gbit speed? (full duplex)
3) does your nas has a firewall? (so you can see what the mac asking there)
4) on the macs is the firewall on? (does the programms can pass the fw?)
5) how big is the nas and how many files/dirctorys are on the nas? (big folders speeds down )
many questions, but sometimes there is a solution.

so i guess we are using the same devstudio.
But as this error happened every time, when i upgraded to SP10, I remove all previous plugins (mean deleted all ../eclipse/plugins/<plugOCA> florders (see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwmobile71/helpdata/en/b6/0f5c4a07cd4bcdb58598760cb27766/frameset.htm )
and also deleted the workspace...otherwise things went wrong.
I finaly got ridd of this error with a fresh new NWDS installation, and create a basic app, then deploy an run succesfully.
There s another topic on this forum concerning this error.

Application Launch Failure error message upon start up
I get the following message every time I start my computer. Ijust upgraded to 10.4.4 from 10.3.9 via 10.1 .
Application Launch Failure
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
Does anyone know what this is related to? I have tried repairing permissions with no luck. Does it have something to do with my Palm desktop software? How else can I try to get rid of it?

Every application seem to decline my password - why?

I've bumped into a weird problem where every application - including settings - are declining my password, even though it's the real password. I can that tell it's the real password because it does NOT say the password is wrong, and when I'm typing a wrong password it tells that it is wrong. When I type the real password, it accepts it, but then it immediately want me to type the password once again.
It's really hard to explian, so I've recorded a short video which demostrates the problem.

In the video I'm trying to access my account privileges, because I guess that's a good example to show. It also happens when I'm trying to install a new app that requires my password. But there's no problem in terminal when I use sudo. And yes, I'm on the admin account. This problem started around two weeks ago.
My OS X is in Danish, so if you need any translations, just ask!

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo rm /var/audit/current
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Test. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. -
A way to schedule applications launch/quit?

First off let me say I'm an apple scripting noob. I've posted a similar thread in the OSX forum, and they said all the cool scripting guys hang out here. Hopefully someone here is willing to help.
I'm looking for a way schedule when an application launches; e.g. 10min after startup? Similarly, I'd like to schedule specific programs to automatically quit at a specific time, and re-open at another; e.g. quit at 9:00am, turn on at 12:00pm? To make things more complicated, some of the programs I wish to schedule create pop-ups asking "are you sure you want to quit" and/or "do you want to save before quiting"
I would like to avoid using ical for this task (since it will happen every day) so I downloaded Lingon. Everyone says how easy this program is to use, and I see that its indeed easy to schedule it to run a specific script at a specific time, however, I have no idea how to create the actual script.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
edit: If I remember correctly, there once was a program that would follow your actions and create a script based around what you did, which you could then execute via key command, etc. The user would simply hit a "record" button and then it would record your actions and create a the script. Does something like this exist?

If you need to put a delay into the script itself, add a new line with the content:

How to get a list of every application on my computer?
I'm trying to figure out how to get a list of every application on my computer using applescript. I know it is possible for the system to do this, as evidenced by the dialog you get when you use the "choose application" function. Other examples are doing a spotlight search for "kind:app" or programs like Namely or QuickSilver.
Is there a way to do this in applescript? The only solution I've come up with so far is to use the command:
<pre>set everyapplicationaliases to choose application as alias with multiple selections allowed</pre>
and manually select all on the resulting dialog. I can then take the results and go from there, however there are a few significant problems with this approach.
1. It requires user interaction. (I have an idea for some future applications that could use this functionality if it can be done without user input.)
2. It's horribly slow. As a test run I choose all the applications from the dialog, extracted some basic info and put the result on the clipboard. It took a couple of minutes to complete this relatively basic task. In comparison, running the aforementioned spotlight search took maybe ten seconds.

I think I finally found some numbers that make sense!
When I search for Kind:Application by the Command+F method in the Finder, I get a total of 2521 items, of which 2477 are "Applications" and 44 are "Other".
(Just by eyeballing it, "Other" seems to include some Classic Apps and some .bundle files.)
The total # found by this method (2521) plus the number of Widgets found using mdfind (318) equals the number of total number of items found by spotlight (2839).
I also noticed that these numbers almost equal the spotlight number:
mdfind results for kMDItemKind:
Widgets: 318
Applications: 1684
Classic*: 795
and
Command+F "Other" items: 44
3181684+79544 = 2841
It may be a fluke that this is so close to the 2839 spotlight gives, or maybe there's an overlap somewhere...
Tying this back into my initial question, it seems like the original mdfind command for Applications is probably the best answer for what I was looking for,
since I wasn't really thinking about Classic apps and Widgets anyway. -
My Mountain Lion have freezing all the time, in every application

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Error when starting ZENworks Application Launcher Explorer

I am a Hong Kong user which very very new to Novell system. My colleague having a problem that, after he has login to the system (window XP), normally the ZENworks Application Explorer should be able to pop out automatically. But suddenly it is fail to do so started from yesterday. An error message "ZEN works Application Explorer Executable has encountered a problem and need to close." keeps occurs, with Error signature "AppName: naldesk.exe AppVer: 2001.4.10.0 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001103c".
It is very strange that if we login to the system with other by differenct account, there will be no problem. The following are the examples:
1.) Colleague A account to do login action in Colleague A computer -> failed to launch ZENworks Application Explorer.
