Fireware Update, NO EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY! Im stuck!

OK so I just updated my ipod mini, now it says that I need to plug it into the external power supply. only one problem.... I don't know where it is. I lost it a while back and now I cant do anything on the ipod. Computer doesn't even acknowlege its in until i will update it fully by plugging in the power supply! plz help me. thanx

Shaun,
If this is a first gen mini and you updated via a usb connection, then you need to complete the update via the charger. No way around this.
Beg/borrow one, or visit an Apple store?

  • 17"display with extern power supply won´t work

    Hi there,
my second display a 17"apple studio display (CRT with VGA) just works every now and then. Can´t locate what´s wrong, I already changed the graphic card, no result. In system profiler both displays are listed mostly, also in the display menue on the topbar, though as soon as I tell to recognize the displays only the main display remains. The 17" display has the extern power supply, but it´s a original apple as well. Thought it might be a bad contact, but can´t find anything. Living here in spain I nearly have no chance to check the display by a dealer. I would be grateful for some help, Michael.

  • T440s keyboard and external power supply

The issue that I come across is if T440s starts up on battery, as soon as the external power supply is connected, the keyboard stops responding, as well as mouse. if I disconnect external power supply, both keyboard and mouse function as usual.
If start up on external poewr supply, it seems to be OK.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello Hans -
Taking a look a the PrecisionHD Camera User Guide on pg 9, the 2.5x camera does have a power supply connector just like the 4x and 12x cameras.  It does say the power supply connector is For future use, so it doesn't seem like it supports an external PSU at this time.

  • Powering down display with external power supply

I am using a 23" display with an old PowerMac G4 from 1998 with an upgraded video card and external power supply.
Is there any way to power off the monitor without powering down the computer? Ideally I'd like this to happen automatically based on my system prefs, but apparently the external power supply precludes this.
As a "workaround", I've created a screen saver that displays a black image. Does this actually save any energy and/or extend the life of my display?
    Thanks,
    - Michael

    Hi Michael,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You can install an on-off switch on the power lead to the external power supply (actually, it's safer to have a qualified electrician do this, as you are dealing with a mains power supply). I have this system for my ADC 15" Display, and it works fine.
A black screen saver will not extend the life of your monitor. Screen savers were meant to mitigate the "burn in" effect that happens with CRT displays (and which doesn't happen with LCD displays). If the display is still on, the backlights will still be functioning and they are the finite life component of the LCD display that you need to look after. Also, because the LCD's themselves use so little energy, there will not be much energy saving.
It's more appropriate to "sleep" the display. You can do this (via Energy saver settings in System Preferences) without having to "sleep" the entire computer. This will turn off the backlights and significantly extend the life of the display.
(I'm presuming you are using OS X - you haven't supplied any details regarding your system. :))
    Cheers!

  • FireWire / MacBook Pro / External 7200 rpm Drive / External Power Supply / Daisychaining

I would like to use FireWire from my MacBook Pro to an external 7200 rpm drive (Fantom GreenDrive Quad with FireWire capability) that uses an external power supply.  Are there any issues with using the external power supply?  I read in an archived Mac forum regarding Thunderbolt that there might be (for Thunderbolt, which I'm not using).  The archived info wasn't entirely clear to me as to whether it meant not to power up (turn on or plug in) an external power supply for a daisychained device while the MacBook was on or the daisychain had devices in use, say, or whether it meant don't use (daisychain) any devices that use external power supplies.
Once that question is resolved (about FireWire relative to the external power supply for the external hard drive), my next question is, Can I safely daisychain also? If so, what protocol would I use for that, relative to the power supply for each daisychained hard drive?

I have had no issues using daisychained FireWire 800 external drives with leaving the drives turned on, power supplies on, and restarting my MBP.  The MBP starts up and sees the drives and runs fine.

  • Navigator Car Kit External Power Supply

Has anyone figured out a way to fit the Navigator 6 car kit (Palm GPS Car Kit is model 3224NA) with an external power supply?  I 'd like to use the unit in other places besides my car.
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

On the iPod there are two ways to get power into it. On the dock connector there are power input pins for USB and power input pins for Firewire. USB is +5V while Firewire is often +12V but can be a lot higher. On the Firewire pins you can input over 30V. What I am not sure about is if you can input more than 5V on the USB power pins since USB is standardized at 5V but that doesn't mean the iPod can't accept more on those pins.
Anyway, the automobile connection is very likely wired up to deliver the +12V car battery voltage to the Firewire power pins of your iPod Classic and that is normal/acceptable.

  • Can i use an external power supply to power second graphics card?

hello. i currently have an ATI 5870 in my 2010 Mac Pro. I want to throw a Quadro 4000 in there as well, but i need one more 6-pin power cable. can i plop the quadro into the second PCI slot, buy a PC desktop power supply and just let it sit on the outside next to my Mac Pro, and then just run a 6-pin power cable from the power supply into the Quadro? i realize that the Mac Pro door would could not be placed back on...but i could figure out some way to cover up the opening so that dust doesn't enter.
    would this work? anyone tried?

    Hi,
Just want to ask a question that is not clear on everything that I have read. If you don't switch off the external power what do you take the risk for? Could you burn something or the card will just continue to work (spin the fan) after you turn off the Mac Pro? Where is the dangerous part?
    Thanks!

  • I just got my iPhone 4 a week ago, and I realized that whenever the battery reaches 55% or less, it automatically shuts down. I have to charge it again to turn it on. I won't turn on unless there is an external power supply to it. Why is this so?

I got my iphone 4 a week ago, but i realized that whenever the battery reaches 55% it automatically turns off and will not turn on unless its connected to a power supply (AC charger or USB on pc). I tried hard resetting it but it did not work. Havent restored it. Any idea why is this so? I hope it has nothing to do with the battery.

    Hi,
Not that's not normal and is one of the Problems I was having before Restoring as New...
Just make sure you Sync ALL your important Info... Contacts... Music... Etc... to your Computer...
and then do a Restore as New...
i was a bit reluctant at First, because I hadn't done it before... But it was So Easy and am Really Glad I did...

  • External Power Supply: Voltage?

    Dear iPodders,
What voltage is safe to put into the dock connector of an iPod classic?
The travel power pack only seems to deliver 5v to it, but I've got a cable to use for connection to an in-car stereo, and it has a power feed that connects directly to the +12v of the car's battery!
Is this OK? Or is this dangerous?

  • External HD - Power Supply vs Portable

Hi guys, I know this isn't the ideal forum to post in, but I couldn't find a better one - sorry!
My question is - what is the advantage to purchasing an external hard drive that utilizes an external power supply, versus just purchasing a portable one that does not require one? Reliability? Speed?
Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi TFF,
Most 2.5" are bus powered and considered portable. Some come with an extra power supple as some HDs draw more power than the USB or FW bus can provide.
Reliability these days is pretty close to the same.
Speed should be similar also, as both come in 7200RPM or 5400RPM (the 3.5 is also available in 10,000RPM, but that's another story).
Capacity for the price is a big factor. You'll definitely get more storage for your money with a 3.5" setup, but then you have to carry the larger unit and always be tethered to that power cord for backups.

  • Resetting older ipod w/o ext. power supply

    Hi...
Are there any ways around using an external power supply to complete a reset on a click-wheel monochrome (or older) ipod.
My kids keep borrowing, and losinf, my power supplies and now I'm stuck!
    Thanks!
    Joe

You can use the 6-pin FireWire port on your computer, or a car adaptor, or an unit such as the iPod Hi-Fi, or try this method to charge the iPod. You can also take it to an Apple Store if one is nearby.

  • Where can I buy a replacement power supply (model VP-09500018-000) for my 1st generation Time Capsule?

My 1st Time Capsule no longer powers on!  It was making noises for a while before it would no longer keep power / turn on!   I have taken the time capsule apart and could easily replace the power supply if I knew where to buy it   Can anyone lead me in the right direction?
    Thank you!

Apple do not supply it as a part.
You can repair the existing supply.

Plenty of people sell the caps set on ebay. Cheaper if you have a good electronics store handy but they need to be top quality low esr capacitors.
Substitute a different kind of power supply.
I definitely believe in using external power supply for this job. This is my own website so disclaimer.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
Or some original type are available on ebay. Just search for "Time Capsule power supply"
Or look at what a whole second hand TC will cost you.. a Gen3 or Gen4 can be a better proposition than repairing a dead Gen1.
You can also do a half repair.. By that I mean you only need one voltage to run the TC.. a single 5v 3A power supply plugged into the TC board socket or soldered directly in.. will give you an airport extreme Gen2 for $10. Plug the hard drive in by USB.. or use a bit of careful hacking and use a SATA cable to the post on the board and use a 2TB or even 3TB esata case.
You can also still buy a Cisco dual voltage supply on ebay.. but the wiring of it is a bit rough.

  • Restore, but I do not have a power supply.

Hi. I just got a 4g iPod of ebay. I went to restore it via iTunes and everything went well until I have to plug it into an external power supply. Apparently my really cheap charger (also from ebay) that isn't the "brick" that apple makes doesn't work for an external power supply.
    Now all my questions:
Is there a way to get rid of the image on the screen telling me to plug it in? Would it be bad to reset it mid-restore? Can I leave it for a week or so in this 'plug me in' mode until I can borrow a brick to plug it into? Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks!

Plug it into a 6-pin FireWire port on a computer, or an unit such as the iPod Hi-Fi, or try this method, or take it to an Apple Store.

  • FP-1000and FP-AI-110 power supply

    Hello there,
I just set up my first FieldPoint unit and have a question concerning  the recommended Power Supply:
When I read the FP-1000 QuickStartGuide , page 16, I thougt , there is no other way supplying  the  FP-AI-110 module but
by another external power supply .
But It seems , that the FP-AI-110 module is supplied by the internal bus, wihtout cascading power by the terminal. (See attached picture, where only the network module is connected to
    an external Power supply )
So which way is recommended by NI ? Input Voltages at the analog module are limitede to max 5V.
    Greetings

    Hi!
I have in my lab FP-DI-301 and FP-DO-401.  All works, even if I don't cascade V-C terminals, except the output module don't drive their outputs! I mean, V-C are used from output module to actually feed the output current/voltage.  The power/Ready leds lights also with V-C not cascaded because the "logic" part of the modules derive power from backplane.  Also the I/O interfacing circuits work, in fact I can see inputs even without V-C connected.  This holds when the whole system has the same power supply.
Taking a look at FP-AI-110 manual, "Voltage and current inputs are referenced to the COM terminals, which are internally connected to each other and to the C  terminals. All eight VSUP terminals are internally connected to each other and to the V terminals." and "The [c]FP-AI-110 has eight single-ended input channels. All eight channels share a common ground reference that is isolated from other modules in the FieldPoint system.".  So, I guess, you may refer your inputs to another system, with separated commons.  That's why you are told to connect V-C.

  • No internet with external power on L20

Can connect to internet when my L20 runs off own power pack, but when battery level goes low and asks for external power, internet connection is lost when my mains power adaptor attatched. Also, internet will not connect if external power supply is used from the outset. Disconnect external power and run on battery pack, internet connection can now take place !! Any thoughts.

Try checking that the polarity of the dc power coming out of the ac adapter is correct. In fact check that you have any dc voltage coming out of the adapter.
I don't really understand what you're describing. Are you really saying that ONLY the internet connection is affected. That everything else is working ok on mains power. The power and disk indicator lights are all on; the battery charges up ok; the screen is lit; the fan is running and that these things will continue to work if you then removed the battery? (Except the battery charging of course).
