Firewire 1394 in newer versions of Mac

I have an old DV that uses Firewire 1394 in XP. can I use this in the newer Mac?

Depends on which Mac you are referring to. You'd have to be far more specific - my mid 2010 iMac has FW 800; so do the 2011 iMacs - the 2012's do not I believe, they have Thunderbolt instead.

  • How do I know if I need to pay for new version of Mac Os

I bought a MacBook pro in June last year (2011) - a month before the new version of Mac OS came out. I paid $29 for the update, however a few days later, I got an email from apple telling me about a free update to the version that I had paid for. I feel like my $29 paid last year was wasted.
As another new version of Mac OS comes out soon, how do I know whether I should pay for the update?
Is there a specific rule that says for how long a serial number qualifies for free version updates?

you have to pay for the new update.  It's only free if you purchased a new mac June 11th of this year or later.  You'd have to call Apple if you want to inquire about a refund from over a year ago.

  • Installed new version of Mac OS x and iWeb won't open

I installed new version of Mac OS x last night and iWeb won't open

I spent an exhausting night testing programs after updating. My iWeb works as expected after the update. No network problems whatsoever. You may want to see if you are connected to the internet. iWeb opens incredibly slowly when there is no connection. Try opening Safari and see if you are surfing normally.
Lion hides the Library folders, probably so users can't mess with them. I downloaded the latest beta of Onyx and was able to get the Library folders to show again.
The only problem I had were some font issues. Do you have a font manager installed? Lion installs its font program and it is set to automatically activate fonts. I turned all autoactivation off.
Lion has no Rosetta and Power PC programs are no longer supported. Do you have the newest version of iWeb installed? I also have been updating my Mac constantly. You may want to run software update and make sure all your programs are current.

  • New Version of Mac Security Available message??

I am having this message appear on all my Macs...New Version available.  New Version of Mac Security has been downloaded and is ready to be installed.  Please click "install now" to start installation.  This message looks very questionable.  Is it real?  Should I be installing?
    Thanks!

Is this appearing in a browser window? When the window showing that message is frontmost (click on its title bar to bring it to the front), is your web browser the active app? (Look at the application menu, next to the Apple menu on the menu bar, to see what the active app is.) If so, it's a pop-up from some web site you're visiting on all those machines. You can (and should) ignore it.
If it's not a browser window, can you provide a screenshot? Press command-shift-4, then push the space bar, then click on the window. The screenshot of that window will appear on your desktop, and you can insert it in a post here using the camera icon in the post editor toolbar.

  • Upgraded iPad 2 to iOS6 - asking me to connect to iTunes - when I do, my Mac is saying 'detected an iPad in recovery mode but need to upgrade iTunes to a newer version (our Mac too old to upgrade). How do I restore iPad so I can use it again?

I upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS6 following a prompt from the application icon.
Once that was complete, my iPad asked me to connect to iTunes which I did.  iTunes then told me that it detected an iPad/iPod in recovery mode and I needed to have a newer version of iTunes to restore.
I've tried before to upgrade to a new version of iTunes but was advised my Mac was unable to support this due to the Mac's age and old operating system.
How, therefore, do I get back onto using my iPad 'cos at the moment, all I get when I switch it on is the 'connect to iTunes' symbols.
Help please, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms!

During a normal install of iOS 7.0.6 this does not happen but something clearly went wrong in your installation.
To fix this, connect to iTunes and restore to Factory. Hopefully your iPad will be working again and you can restore your iCloud backup during Setup.

  • Newer version of Mac Mail?

Don't ask how, but I somehow deleted MAIL (and a bunch of other applications) from my computer, and had to reinstall all of the software. Now, when I click on the mail icon, it says "you cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X".  I have a 10.5.8 and reinstalled with the original CD's. What now??? Everything else (all other programs/apps) seem to be workingagain. Not being able to open & access my mail is rather inconvenient! Any suggestions?

Yes, I used the disks that came with the mac, I also used the iLife '09 disc, since that is newer.  As for upgrades, I don't think I have... I do have regular updates done automatically though... I really am kinda clueless! Things that seem like they should be simple just aren't. Any thoughts for me now???

  • How can I access Address Book data from an older version of the application to transfer it to a newer version of Mac OS running on a second hard drive on the same MDD G4?

I installed a hard drive from one PowerPC Dual 1.25 GHz MDD into another one with an older version of the OS X.  all my Address Book data are on the older hard drive, from which I now boot the computer.  When I launch Address Book as an app on the hard drive with the newer version of the OS, I get an error message that says I cannot run the version of Address Book from the older hard drive on the newer OS.  How can I access the data on the older hard drive version of the Address Book app so that I can transfer it to the newer version of the app on the boot drive?  The "Import" functionality will not work. I will be grateful for any help I can get.  I would also like to uninstall the older version of OS X from the older hard drive.

Boot from the older version of OSX, then in AB use the File>Export>Export vCard after selecting all in AB.
Then boot from the new OSx & use the new AB to import that VCF file.

  • How to erase and install new version os Mac Os X?

Can someone tell me how to erase and install new copy of Mac OS X 10.5.8 ?? IS there a way to do this without CD?? I no longer have the disks and I cant find a way to get this done.. The reason I want to do this is because a 12 year old was using this computer for a long time and there is a lot of junk stuff on the disk, so I want to start from fresh.
    Thank you in advance.
    Yani.

    Hi Yani,
Your out of luck without an Install Disc, & on dangerous ground also.
    2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

  • How do I download a new version of Mac OS X?

I am trying to upgrade my iTunes, and am unable to because my Mac Book Pro is a version Mac OS X 10.5.8, and I am told I need Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or higher. How do I upgrade to this version?

You need to purchase Snow Leopard >  Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
But before you purcahse the disc, make sure your Mac can run Snow Leoaprd v10.6.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
After installing Snow Leopard, click Software Update from the Apple () menu top left in your screen or open System Preferences > Software Update then click Check Now.
That will bring your Mac completely up to speed.
Don't forget to backup your important files to an external source before upgrading.

  • Trying to download the new version on mac os 10.4 won't happen

The download seems to complete but then it says I can't save it to the desktop. Is the Mac 10.4 too old?

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
