Firewire 400 issue with new iMac 20"

Hi all,
Maybe one of you can help. I've got a problem with my Western Digital myBook 500Gb external harddrive when I connect it to my (new) iMac 20" using the firewire 400 port. The drive does not show up on the desktop, not in diskutility and also not in the systemprofile (it just says 'FireWire-bus: Maximum speed: maximum 800Mb/sec').
To make sure there's nothing wrong with the port I connected a Canon DV camcorder (using the 400 port but using different firewire cable). I shows up correctly in the systemprofile and I can get data of that. So, I assume the port is functioning properly.
To make sure the external drive is working and there's nothing wrong with the firewire cable, i connected the drive to my 'old' iMac (a core duo 17") and it all works fine. So, the device must be ok and the cable aswell.
Some extra details:
- Both macs run osx 10.4.10.
- If I connect the drive using usb, it all functions correctly, i can even boot from the drive.
- When I booted the 20" mac for the first time i used the wizard to copy over the data from the old mac using the firewire cable. That all worked correctly.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Some more details: if i unplug the power from the drive and refresh the systemprofile it does find the drive, although it is listed as an unknown device:
Unknown device:
Manufacturer: Unknown
Model: Unknown device
GUID: 0x0
Maximum speed: Maximum 400 Mb/sec
Connectionspeed: Maximum 400 Mb/sec
(the above was translated from Dutch).
If I then plug in the power of the drive, sysprofile says 'FireWire-bus: Maximum speed: maximum 800Mb/sec' (also translated from Dutch).
Oh and zapping the PRAM did not make a difference, nor did removing WD files from the Library -> StartupItems folder. The LaunchDeamons folder was empty.

  • Severe issues with new iMac. Do I need firmware update?

I purchased a new iMac at the end of September 2007. It still had Tiger on it and ran fine. I upgraded to Leopard at it's release and have had some problems ever since BUT THEY ARE GETTING WORSE.
I did a complete erase and install this past weekend but problems remain. I have to do a force shutdown with the power button sometimes and then things run slowly. I use Disk Warrior and rebuild the drive and also repair permissions and things seem to run fine for awhile. THEN the problems start again.
I know there is to be a Leopard update soon. Should I wait and see if that solves the issues? I also know there was a firmware update for the new iMac in the fall. When I did my erase and re-install this past weekend, I didn't do that update UNLESS it's already in the 10.5.1 update. Should I do it now?
I also recently got a LaCie 250 gig firewire hard drive. Sometimes it does not mount; but I've ran Disk Warrior and repaired permission on it also and no errors are reported. (I also have a 60 gb FireLite. It did not mount once; but mostly it's the LaCie that fails to mount ... but not always. 75% of the time it mounts fine.)
I just don't know what the problem is. I am very frustrated. I have NEVER had trouble like this with a Mac in all the years I've had one. I know one things for sure. I will NEVER again buy a new machine or operating system until they've been out at least six months
Any knowledgeable suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks so much.

My problems are: 1)Sometimies when I try to restart the computer, I get either a spinning beach ball or a blue screen and nothing else. OR sometimes it does re-start but keeps the other spinning circular thingie going. In either case, I have to push the power button for a few secons causing it to shut down hard. On the other hand, sometimes it behaves normally.
Other problems include slowness, such as finder windows opening very slowly or files showing up in finder windows very slowly.
I don't notice that this happens with any particular program. It seems sporadic. Sometimes the computer runs fine and then all of a sudden, the issues reappear.
I have used Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, repaired permission, etc. All the programs report that the discs are fine (the internal disc, the LaCie drive and the FireLite drive.) I did a complete erase and re-install. I have not used a hardware test disc. (I suppose there is one with the original restore discs; but I am using Leopard now so I'm not sure how that works. That was Tiger.)
I have suspected a lot of things. I stopped iDisk automatic mounting & syncing. I stopped syncing altogther. I've turned off Spaces and Time Machine. I don't let any programs load automatically except the bare minimum. I'm just very frustrated.
I did hear there was a firmware update in early November but 10.5.1 was released after that; and I have done all the software updates so I don't know if I need to do the firmware update. (This machine is one of the new thin aluminum iMacs introduced in August. I got mine in September.)

  • Bootcamp issue with new iMac

Hi - I just purchased a new 21.5 inch iMac with Intel Core i7.  I used Bootcamp to partition a new drive, and I installed 32bit Windows 2007 Home Premium.  Everything worked without a problem, until I tried to install Bootcamp in the Windows environment.  It says that "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running".  I searched the forums for similar issues - I tried to re-download the Bootcamp update in OSX; I tried to use the command prompt to go right to the msi file, and nothing worked.  Unfortunately, I cannot connect to the internet through Windows until I instal all the drivers, so I am stuck.
Does anyone know if the Bootcamp drivers are supported on the new iMac i7?

Hi, ta know, they don't mention it here, but I'm wondering if 10.8 might not require 64 bit Win7?

  • Connecting Firewire 400 Drives to new iMac...

    Hi all,
I just tried connecting two external drives to my new iMac using the FW400-to-FW800 and FW800-to-Thunderbolt cables. When I plugged the last bit into my new iMac, however, my Magic Mouse and keyboard stopped working. Did I do something wrong? Is there some setting I'm forgetting? Do I need to connect it all while off, then restart? Any and all help/advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    B

    Hi all,
I just restarted the iMac with everything plugged in and it works fine. (headslap) Duh.
    Thanks anyway!

  • Hard drive issues with new imac 27 inch empty space being eaten up

    Hi There
I have been having a strange problem with my new imac . Ever since i got it the hard drive has been making sounds even when i have not been using the computer . It sounds as if it is loading a file . I looked at disk activity in activity monitor and it showed that the disk was being written to every few seconds . Then out of curiosity I did a get info on the disk and happened to notice that every few seconds approximately 500k gets written to the disk .
Can I some how track these writes , to determine which process is causing them?
Can't imagine it being a virus since it's been happening since i took it out of box .
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks for the help
    Mrfish

If your machine is brand new, it could be Spotlight indexing your drive. If so, it's nothing to worry about and it will subside soon.
Here is some info about Spotlight that goes beyond what's available in OS X Help:

  • No Firewire Adapter Included in new iMAC

OK, am I too picky? I just received my new iMAC and realized that the firewire 400 port on my old G4 is not compatable with the firewire 800 on my new iMAC. I have seen other discussions about how easy it is to buy adapters. I live in the San Francisco bay area, and have been to three radio shacks, two Best Buys and none had this item or were out. I have spent over three hours driving from store to store. The ultimate frustration is that I visited our local Apple store and they don't stock this item!! Apple must realize that many, if not most, people bought a new iMAC to replace their old apple computers and thus an firewire adapter would be necessary. Would it have been too much to have expected Apple to have included this item which for them could not cost more than a few dollars? I waited several weeks for the computer, wasted gas, time and money searching for a very simple and inexpensive item that apple should have included, so I guess waiting a week more to order it is not that bad. Sorry to vent, but this is very poor thinking and quite rude to Apple's customers.

The item is readily available online. Here's one at long-time Apple-friendly OWC. Actually, one is an adapter, one is a cable. Either one would work. I'd go with the cable to eliminate one connection point.

Give your business to the businesses that provide what you need and support the Mac platform. Radio Shack, Best Buy, please... Don't buy at those places when you can get it more easily and for less money at a store that caters to Mac users.
The Apple Store does carry it (though expensive compared to OWC).

  • Wake issues with 24" iMac

I am having the issue with my iMac lab. Units will go to sleep and when a student tries to use the unit there is no response from keyboard but mouse will respond. They need to be restarted to resolve the issue but should it go to sleep again we start the process all over. I have 17 in this lab and have been sending them in for repair two at a time. They replaced the DC/SATA cable on the first two and it resolved nothing. Resetting PRAM and PMU also did not correct the issue.
    Any ideas? Hardware? Software?

I have a computer lab with 25 with the same problem. I found this happened after they keyboard update. Has anyone really solved this problem with the keyboards not responding after the computers go to sleep? We have to restart several every day, every hour. What is apple doing with this?

Hi , I suhail khan from india and i am user of iMac system 10,1.These days i am facing the sound enabling issue with my iMac system I am not able to hear sound in my iMac system. So kindly suggest me how to enable sound in my iMac . Please no the needful.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. If you've recently plugged anything into the audio-out (headphone) port, plug and unplug it a couple of times.
    2. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sound ▹ Output
Check the settings. The internal speakers should be selected as the output device, the Mute box should not be checked, and the volume slider should be at least halfway to the right.
    3. Look inside the headphone port. If a red light is coming from the port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a headphone mini-stereo jack of the proper size.Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    4. Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. It will take much longer than usual. You don't have to log in; just reboot as usual (without holding any keys) when the login screen appears. (Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.)
    5. Reset the NVRAM.
    6. Reset the SMC.
    7. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data as a precaution. You won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.
    8. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.

  • Does a firewire cable come with new 17-inch Powerbooks?

Just ordered a new 17-inch Powerbook, and I plan to run the Migration Assistant when it arrives, to get the data from my old iBook to the new PB. My question is about the requisite firewire cable. Does a firewire cable ship with new PBs? Or should I go down to the Apple Store and buy one before it gets here? Thanks.

You'll need to go and buy a cable.
    From the Store page:
    In the box
    • PowerBook G4
    • Power adapter, AC wall plug and power cord
    • Lithium-ion battery
    • Adapters: mini-DVI to DVI and mini-DVI to VGA (12-inch); S-video to composite and DVI to VGA (15-inch and 17-inch)

  • Using new trackpad with new iMac

Using new trackpad with new iMac, but can't seem to get the "touch function" to work. I still have to press firmly and click on the trackpad to get response. The videos show "touch" while I  "firm press and click."  Checked speed, cleaned it, and reset. No luck?? Ideas? Even took back to Best Buy and seemed to work with their display...

Assuming you are talking about tap to click, you would need to enable it. It is disabled by default. Go to settings and choose trackpad settings. Navigate to "Point and Click" tab and enable "Tap to Click".
