Firewire 800 connection down on an Intel iMac - software or hardware of cab
It appears that my Firewire connection from an intel imac 2GHz seems to be down. It is not showing up in the "More information" section in the in "About This Mac". Is this a software or hardware or cable issue?

"bugs" w/intel imac, software vs. hardware
I've seen several discussions mentioning the "bugs" will be worked out in the intel imac over the next few months. Are people referring just to awaiting new software that will run natively? Or Tiger updates? Or hardware issues? I'm looking to buy one, but trying to decide if I should wait until the next updated iMac. If it is a hardware problem, I'd be more inclined to wait. If it is TIger software that will be updated automatically or just awaiting third party apps, that's not a big deal to me. What do people think?
People who are referring to "bugs" are in general just speculating, presuming that because the Intel iMacs are a first-generation product, there are likely to be problems. Whether or not any actually exist in the new iMac is at this time unknown, but so far I've not seen anyone post anything that can be reasonably presumed to be a chronic hardware fault.

Firewire 800 Connection Dismounting
We've been having major issues with the Firewire 800 port on our recently purchased iMac 27" (with Thunderbolt).
For a while we noticed the Firewire 800 port was rather flakey, dropping connections here and there. It's now almost consistant - as soon as we set up any sort of transfer the transfer begins and after about 1.5 gb or so have been coppied the drives will start spinning strangely and the "Did Not Eject" warning appears.
This is with SEVERAL drives, all of which work fine with the other MacPros/MacBook Pros in the office. These drives are also just fine with USB so it's not the firewire on the drives themselves. It seems to be particualrly bad with any drives which are bus powered.
Tried several different cables and I know thats not the issue either. The problem still persists.
We are a media studio specializing in broadcast and design and this computer is used predominantly for video editing which means we transfer a lot of our large files via Firewire 800, so it not working puts a serious kink in our workflow.
Anyone else noticing the issue with these recent iMac 27" (which I've heard feature a whole host of issues)? Anyone know how I can get in touch directly with Apple?Reset PRAM and then OK

Canon Gl2 Video Camera Not Recognized with Firewire 800 Connection
I have a late 2010 mac with 2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7 Processor with 12GB DDR3 running 10.8.2 OSX. I have a Canon GL2 video camcorder with a MiniDV tape I am trying to download to my computer. I am using a new 4pin to 9pin Rocketfish Firewire 800 cable. My computer is not recognizing the firewire input from the GL2. As suggested with other support threads, I have tried to turn the mac and computer off and on, as well as check to see if the cable is working. I have also tried both a trial version of Final Cut, and Imovie 09 which is loaded on my Mac, neither of which will recognize the camera. I clicked on the System Information icon and looked at the Firewire 800 status which was:
FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
At least I know it recognized something. I have also checked to make sure the Canon is set to DV-Out on the Menu. Since I am unable to use a USB connector with MiniDV, would there be any other way to either A) Download the video to the computer, or B) get the Mac to recognize the source plugged into the Firewire? Any help with this would be excellent.I believe that in order to be recognized, you have to start the process from within iMovie of Final Cut; as for your FW port, you can try these two different troubleshooting steps (may or may not work, but won't hurt):
Reset SMC:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
PRAM:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
It may that your FW port is defective; it that turns out to be the problem, I hope you purchased Applecare because those ports are an integral part of the logic board, so that would have to be replaced ($$$).
Since your footage is on DV tapes, you do need the FW to transfer it or it will not work. One other (involved) way would be to transfer your footage to a DVD if you have a DVD recorder and then get it on the Mac from there. -
Securing FireWire 800 connection to Macbook Pro
I am really surprised that there doesn't seen to be one post here related to the poor connection FireWire 800 makes on the Macbook Pro. The portable nature begs for this to stay connected when there is movement. Not so. Judging from this discussion, many others have experienced this problem. It also seems that Apple doesn't want to take any ownership for it judging from Genius bar advice.
Has anyone found a way to fix this issue? It seems that it all depends on the cable - I use FW800 on my MBP and can wiggle around to my heart's content with the FW cable plugged in. No problems with my cable on a late 2011 MBP.

Connect Select 360 to Intel iMac...
Hi -
How can I connect a LaserWriter Select 360 to an Intel iMac? I have an existing ethernet network, but the 360 has no eithernet connection on it. Is it possible to go from a serial port connection or a scuzzy (sp?) port to an ethernet network (i.e. is there an adaptor cord from one to the other)?'
If it is possible, will I run into a print driver problem (i.e..will the print driver for the 360 run on an Intel iMac)?
Thanks in advance for any help with these questions...
Da Kid
G4 867, Intel iMac Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hi, Grant -
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I got side tracked on some things that needed immediate attention.
As it turns out, I already had an AsanteTalk box on hand. After setting it up, I was able to "see" the Select 360 in the Printer Set-up Utility and make it active, but I still can't print to it.
I've checked all the cables and they are O.K. As for the AsentTalk box, it was O.K. last time I used it (a couple years ago), and if it wasn't O.K. at this time, would the Select 360 have appeared in the Printer Utility on the Printer List?
I think I'm further along than when I started, but no cigar yet. LOL
Any further ideas?
Da Kid
The LaserWriter select 360 is a Postscript level 2
AppleTalk/LocalTalk printer. Your Intel iMac can use
AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to talk to printers like that
one, and the drivers are built-into Mac OS X.
The missing piece is a converter or "bridge" between
the two wiring schemes. This can be accomplished with
a stunt-box (either of two varieties) or by running
Apple's free LaserWriter Bridge software on an older
Mac that has both Ethernet port and a round MiniDIN-8
serial Printer or Modem port.
The Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT or Asante
AsanteTalk are available used, and the AsanteTalk is
also available new. Most of these are connected with
PhoneNet boxes and phone cords, and a terminating
resistor is plugged into the last open socket.
There are also a few stunt-box variants on the used
market that use slightly different schemes, such as
ending in a Printer-8 cable connection. The only
disadvantage is that a box that has a printer cable
can only support one device, while PhoneNet ones can
support up to 8 older Macs and/or printers on the
LocalTalk side. -
Best Firewire 800 HDD Options for mid-2010 iMac?
Hi all,
I've run out of space on my internal HDD and I understand that upgrading the internal HDD is rather difficult. I started looking around at external HDD's and it appears that both WD and Seagate have rolled off support in their mainline products for Firewire 800. You can still get a previous model WD Studio that has Firewire 800, but it is almost twice the price of the latest model. What are my best options for an external hard drive? Any recommendations? Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/Final Cut user, both have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

After 10.9.2 upgrade no firewire 800 connection
After upgrading (iMac 24 2007) to 10.9.2 Mavericks the connection to all of my firewire drives got lost.
Hey Guys,
After recent SMC+EFI update on Macbook Air (Mid 2013) OSX v10.9.3, my internal audio device disappeared,
I tried everything I could find in google with no luck. (NPRAM+SMC reset, reloading kents etc.)
THIS IS WHAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR ME:
1. I opened /System/Library/Extensions folder, there I found besides the usual AppleHDA.kext, also an AppleHDA.kext.disabled one.
2. I switched between them (swapped their names, sometimes you'll have to do it from the "get info" menu to take effect)
-- if you don't have this AppleHDA.kext.disabled one, try searching for one lil older than yours in the internet
3. then I unloaded and reloaded the kent dir again-
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
And voila!
Hope it helps someone, as I spent hours until getting this to work again -
Dropping Firewire 800 connections
I have 3 FW 800 backup drives, and lately whenever I plugin any USB device, all the FW drives are disconnected, with the usual warning that "some drives were not ejected properly..." or similar. I thought it might be the WD MyBook but it happens even when the WD is not in use.

i too have been noticing this lately and thought it was just me. I have almost the same specs like your 24 and the drives i have hooked up are in the same fashion. Independent electrical USB powered. Guess what i realized (keeping in mind that i am also using 2 drobos 1. FW800 and 2. USB version
* i have a very strange feeling as the discussion went on here, the logic board or the power management for FW800 on the iMac line really really is poor! (i would use other words to describe it)
* Let me walk you through what i did :
- the USB drobo is older and much slower but works fine
- the newer FW drobo has been doggy lately
here is what i tried:
- changing the USB cable
- changing the FW800 cable
- constantly pulling it in and out of the iMac
-Still nothing!
- in my new messy place i happen to glance a nice little cable which is a FW 400 to FW800
- I THINK U KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING
- I hooked up the FW 400 to the iMac
- FW800 on the drobo
-PRESTO the it works!

.Mac Auto Syncing of iDisk hindering Restarts/Shut Downs on new Intel iMac?
I have been experiencing a Restart/Shut Down reliability issue with my new iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. This evening an Apple rep I know pointed me to a work-around in Apple Discussions:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5957261
This thread notes the discovery by one user that iDisk automatic syncing is not working reliably, and is preventing consistent restarting/shutting down of your Mac. Although, syncing has been working reliably for me both for .Mac stuff, and the iDisk itself, if you do a Get Info on your iDisk it reports, at least for me, that its capacity is 1TB, with 466GB available. I have only the standard 10GB .Mac account, and only 5GB of that is allocated to my iDisk, so something is clearly amiss with the .Mac iDisk setup (iDisk Get Info reports correctly on my G5 Macs w/Leopard), as being reported from the .Mac server. If you check your Console logs, you may also see this recurring error message, which is reporting a syncing error, although my syncs have, as I've said, been working correctly:
11/25/07 9:11 PM FileSyncAgent192 MKCOL /.FileSync (FAILED), httpStatusCode:405, errorType:100, transactionState:5, txnId:3846B904-9ABB-40E5-9928-B9233FAC05D2, auto-retries=0, manual-retries=0
To summarize, if you turn off your iDisk in your System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk preference pane, you'll have no problems restarting/shutting down. You may also need to do the power management reset (turn off Mac, unplug all devices and power for 15 seconds, reconnect, and start up) and the parameter RAM reset (reboot while holding down the cmd-opt-P-R keys). You can do this in one restart cycle, if you like. After that, restarts/shutting down has worked perfectly for me.
Of course, I actually USE my iDisk, and will be leaving it on. But, at least I know now how to work around the restart/shut down issue. (Note: this morning my iMac had locked up, after the iDisk mounted/unmounted repeatedly during the evening, so I rebooted and switched iDisk syncing to manual. More to follow...)
I hope Apple adds this fix to their 10.5.2 update next month.
Note: This is such an important issue, that in addition to adding it to a reply in another Shut Down thread, I thought I'd post it as a separate topic here.MacOS X updates have resolved this issue.

Have been using FireWire 800 connection for WD MyBook Studio
Have been using firewire800 with my WD MyBook Studio primarily for Time Machine backup. May need to be replaced - if I replace with WD MyBook for Mac or something else ( perhaps Seagate) with usb2.0 will I notice a big change in time for TM? If I transfer files to another ext drive, will I notice longer time saving iTunes or iPhoto to an express drive??
Any comments or suggestions are welcome. I have always used WD but wonder if Seagate or someone else has something.
ThanksWD electronics in their external drives don't have a very good reputation, so another brand might be a good idea. I like OWC drives as many of them use Oxford chipsets as well as multiple connections like USB and Firewire (I prefer a Firewire connection). Some examples are this or this.
I use a BackPack to get my external drive off the desktop, which is a handy way to mount it. -
Firewire 800 connection problem
Hi!
So my warranty just expired a month ago. I went to get my mac fixed right before it and it came back with an issue with my firewire. No big deal really. I called back, they helped me fix it, but now it's doing it again.
The external hard drive I connected to the FW8 port works fine. I've tried it with other cables (FW4 and USB2) so I know it's not the hard drive. However, when I try using the FW8, it does not show up at all. I have 2 different external drives and I've tried both of them. Last time when we fixed this, it turns out my mac was trying to boot from the disk or something? I can't remember... nor do I have any idea where to start to mess with the configuration. Help please? the disk is lighting up, so it is powering on... it just isn't showing up!I'm completely confused: you start by saying "The external hard drive I connected to the FW8 port works fine." Then in apparently complete contradiction you write:
However, when I try using the FW8, it does not show up at all.
What do you mean, "the disk is lighting up?"
And:
Last time when we fixed this, it turns out my mac was trying to boot from the disk or something?
The Mac should be trying to boot from some disk.
And then:
I've tried it with other cables (FW4 and USB2) so I know it's not the hard drive.
What does that mean? What is it in, "I've tried it....?" And, are you saying it works (which I suppose means the external does mount) using the FW4 and USB Ports?
I know you have a real problem but I really have no idea what you are asking
In case, as your topic suggests, you are simply asking about a problem with the Firewire Port, do what Roger suggested and have a look at this article.

Firewire 800 connection comes lose
i added a ministack max to my 2010 mini and the firewire cable does not stay connected
any ideas to make it stay. i figure it getting nudged when turning off an on is doing it.I had a similar issue and found I needed to get a different cable that had a slightly longer nose so it would insert deeper into the receptacle. Not all FW cables are the same dimension.

No response from Firewire 800 connection.
Hi,
I have two Freecom HardDrive Pro FW400/800drives. One (1TB) is brand new and unformatted. The 512GB drive is connected by FW800. I can see the partitions, but cannot access them. Changing to FW400 gives me full control. When attaching the new drive by FW800, it spins up but cannot be seen.
Can someone help diagnose this one for me please?
Thanks,

I have an Intel-based iMac running OS X (10.9.1 or Mavericks). I can't get the iMac to recognize my ZR300 DV camcorder is connected. I connect the camera to the iMac using a DV connection on the camcorder and a FireWire 800 connection on the iMac. Is there a driver or some other fix to enable communication between the camcorder and the iMac?
Hi jonrleist!
Thanks for posting.
Your Mac should at least see the camera. No additional drivers are required to make the connection. It is possible the cable you are using has something to do with this. Have you tried using other FireWire 800 cables?
