Firewire 800 drive and itunes

i just bought a firewire drive because my itunes library is so large i cannot put any more music on. Once I install this drive how do I move over all my music and how do i set it up so when i open itunes or import a new cd it only goes thru the firewire drive?

First.................BACK UP ALL YOUR MUSIC
now you can play around, moving your iTunes library is pretty simple.
In Prefernces>Advanced there's a box at the top showing the 'iTunes music folder location' and a button next to it saying 'change'.
Now, before you change the iTunes music folder (basically your librabry) you need to move the actual files. So create a folder your external hard drive ('music' or something) then find your current iTunes folder in Home>Music. In that folder there are 3 files you have to move; the 'iTunes music' folder, the 'iTunes Library' file and the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file.
The Folder has all your music and the other two contain information such as playlists.
It's as simple as moving (not copying, unless you want to for safe keeping) those 3 things (make sure iTunes is closed) to your external drive, to the folder you created earlier. When that done re-open iTunes go to Preferences>Advanced click to Change button up the top. That will open up the Finder Browser, just navigate to that folder on your external drive and select it. Make sure you select the actual folder, not the whole external hard drive OR the contents of the folder.
Quit and re-open iTunes all your music should be back to normal, and any songs you import or add from now on will go into the music folder on the external HD.

  • Can't run Firewire 800 Drive and Firewire 400 Camera at same time?

I just bought a 1TB firewire 800 drive for time machine. Works great. Problem is, when I plug in my Canon DV via firewire at the same time the 800 is connected it doesn't work. I have to unmount the HD, turn it off, and even THEN it wont recognize the DV camera. I have to physically unplug the firewire 800 to get my Canon DV to mount. Amazing. Never had problems with the DV before. Is there some hardware reason why I can't run an 800 and 400 firewire at the same time? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Some DV cameras won't work with anything else connected to the FireWire bus (the FW400 and FW800 share the same bus)
... in particular Canon cameras (Canon firewire implementation) are very sensitive to other firewire devices.

  • NAS or Firewire 800 drive for iTunes storage?

My iTunes files are currently about 5 or 6 TB of files. I tend to add about 1 to 2TB of media files a year. I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro which has 9TB of capacity and has dual gigabit cards (redundant - load balancing) wired via cat6 to a gigabit router. I also have a 8TB LaCie raid big4 quadra which can connect to my iMac 27" via firewire 800. Which would be the better choice for storing my iTunes media AND library files? I have tried storing my library files on the internal 2TB hardrive and the media on an NAS but after a while it begins to create problems so I want to have everything on one drive.
The house is all networked via wired cat6 and there are 4 apple tv's streaming the media files. Since they need iTunes to stream, it still has to go through the iMac as an intermediary and can't use the NAS directly.
Anyone have concrete opinions about or experience with this?
    Thanks

  • Bus Powered External Firewire (800) Drives and iPod?

I bought a WD Passport drive, and was pretty upset when i found out that the usb ports on my powerbook cannot power the drive. crap. can the firewire 800 port on my powerbook power these drives:
    http://www.kanotechnologies.com/products/SF800-40.cfm
    http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-DRIVE-mini.cfm#Buy
I really want a bus powered drive. does anyone know if these will work with my 15" powerbook? one better than the other? oh, and i'm getting it to keep my itunes library on...so will my powerbook have any problem with reading the fw800 drive and the ipod in the fw400 port at the same time?

Well the second linked drive says it is bus powered and does not require a external power brick. Usually most of external 2.5 inch notebook drives (in a 2.5 enclosure) can be bus powered. The 3.5 inch ones are generally not bus powered.

  • Computer crash with iTunes - Using external firewire 800 drive

I am using an external firewire 800 drive (2TB Lacie) to store all my music for iTunes... At random times this crashes the computer, the music "skips" and the computer has a grey notice telling me to shutdown immediately. I am not sure why this is happening, but think this must be some sort of conflict issue... but no clue how to resolve... Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Oh no, sounds like kernel panics. Time to head directly to The X Lab to read the FAQs and get started with maintenance and troubleshooting. Unfortunately, this problem goes way beyond iTunes, so for additional support, you should post in the appropriate OS X forum.

  • Editing Canon 5D to ProRes on an iMac and firewire 800 drive

The Canon 5D footage that has been sent through Compressor to ProRes will not play with any smoothness in FCP 6. I'm wondering if it's because of the Drobo firewire 800 drive? I'm working in a local company's setup and I'm thinking they should be using more than a firewire drive. This iMac is not capable of eSata connection or higher. Any ideas what other cause there could be for the footage playing slowly or freezing all together in the timeline? Thanks.
This is a 2.66 intel core duo iMac with 10.5.8 4GB Ram

When you say, "small portable raids", do you mean like a CalDigitVR or a G-Raid mini or G-Speed?
If you want a drive you can drag around with you, I can't recommend the Caldigit VR Mini highly enough. It is really solidly built and is powered from either the FW bus or an external supply. I used one recently to capture 14 hours of DVCProHD live over 2 days (direct feed from an HVX-200 to FCP on a MBP with the drive powered via firewire) without a hiccup. VERY impressive.
My only quibble with it is there is no independent power switch. When you plug it in (fw or external power), it starts up. Other than that, no issues. The Caldigit RAID software allows for a variety of configurations.

  • Time Machine won't mount Firewire 800 drive after restart / Finder crashes

I've been having problems with Finder crashes. I first suspected Spotlight might be the problem because sometimes when I started typing a search, it would display the first 3 characters and then lock up. I could force quit the Finder, but it wouldn't relaunch and required the computer to be shutdown and restarted with the power button. Once restarted, I had no keyboard and no mouse click (the mouse would move across the screen but I could not click on anything). After waiting several minutes (3-5) the mouse and keyboard worked properly.
After some research suggested the Spotlight index might be corrupt, I forced Spotlight to rebuild the index (add the drive to the exclude list under "Privacy" and then remove it from the list) and then repaired disk permissions. After that Spotlight was noticeably snappier and I thought my Finder crashes had been solved until........
Part 2: I have been using Time Machine (connected to a Fantom GreenDrive via Firewire 800) for several months now and ever since the beginning, I have noticed that the drive will NOT mount after a restart. I must turn the drive off and back on again to get it to mount. After that Time Machine picks it up and seems to work fine.....well, that is until this Finder crashing thing started several weeks ago. Anyway, I inadvertently set up an experiment last weekend when I installed some software update and forgot to remount the Time Machine drive after the restart. That was last Sunday night. The computer did not crash all week long. I thought my Spotlight fix had finally solved my problems, but now it seems I was wrong. This morning (Saturday, six days later), I noticed my Time Machine drive was not mounted. I mounted it, told Time Machine to "Back Up Now" and went away for a few hours. When I came back the Finder was locked up.
So guess my question is this: Are there any know problems with using Firewire 800 with Time Machine? and What can I do to fix this? In the meantime I'm trying another experiment - I've disconnect the Firewire 800 connection and replaced it with USB.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Not in general. Some drives don't always wake or "spin up" fast enough; often that's seen when the system wakes from sleep, though, not so much after a system Restart. Many Western Digitals do that; I don't recall seeing any posts here about yours, but you might want to search the forums for Fantom

Good plan - that may provide a clue.
Also, check with the maker -- there may be a firmware or driver update.
And try verifying your internal HD, and repairing your backups, per #A5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Either might cause that.

  • Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2
    Thanks.

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem.  The eGo has its own power supply too.

One more question: Stayed throughput speeds more or less the same as original Firewire (since all my movies are on external disks) or has it become significantly slower?
I haven't done a careful side by side quantitative comparison of what I had on the older Macbook Pro (which had three Firewire800 disks chained together via FW800) versus the new Macbook Pro (which has thunderbolt into which I have connected three FW800 drives daisy chained via the adaptor), mainly because my employer supplied me with these computers and required I turn in the old one when they replenished it with the new one. However, I can say this -- one of the FW800 externals is used for Time Machine, another for making entire disk clones, and the third is for misc storage. I have seen Time Machine start up during a disk clone (with SuperDuper) and there seems to be no impact. The disk cloning is generally pretty intensive on disk and cpu resources, but thunderbolt seems to have a much bigger capacity for throughput than firewire and hence can apparently accommodate multiple streams of FW800 data going back and forth with no apparent impact on each other. The main limit seems to be the FW800 speed itself, not thunderbolt. I see ~ 60 MB/s or more which is as much as I have ever seen on FW800. Ultimately, the ideal setup will be thunderbolt drives daisy chained together, I would expect hundreds of MB/s, but I don't see many of these thunderbolt drives on the market yet. Even better would be solid state drives ...

    Hi
I've just purchased a Western Digital Mybook Pro 500 gig. It only cost me £180 and Its works excellently with large DV files and heavy graphics. File transfer rate is rapid using Firewire 800! They even have a 1TB model that's RAID 1/0 capable. Check out:

  • Does daisy chaining Firewire 800 drives reduce performance?

    Hello,
Based on the recommendation of a very knowledgable Apple Cert. Instructor, I learnt that a very good drive configuration for editing in FCPX is to have 3 separate drives: Boot disk, Events, and Projects. The reason, I suppose, for having the Events and Projects folders on separate drives is because FCPX is constanty reading and writing data into those 2 databases, which would mean that having both databases on one drive strains performance since the drive would have to write all edit changes constantly in the projects folder while reading video footage constantly from the events folder.
That sounds logical so I'll accept it as being true, but here's the intro to my question: I have an iMac (see the specs below) with 1 firewire 800 port, and my extra 2 drives would need to be daisy chained (FW800) to share the 1 port.
    1. Does the communication to the two drives suffer for being daisy chained into 1 port, i.e. is the 800Mb/s transfer rate halved between the 2 drives or is full 800 to both at the same time?
    2. Does the computer handle the communication with the 2 FW drives via that 1 port evenly so that I takes full advantage of having  separate physical disks dedicated to just reading and writing Media and Project data?
It might seem riduculous to go to such Media Management extremes, but FCPX seems to struggle when I get deep into a project and the performance gets sluggish. that's why I'm trying to optimize the workflow.
    Thank you,
    Reynaldo
    System specs: 27" iMac (mid 2010) 2.8Ghz quad-core i5, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon 5750 with 1GB GDDR5 Memory
    External Drives: LaCie D2 Quadra 2TB 7200RPM and Lacie D2 Quadra 3TB 7200RPM

If all the devices in the chain are FW800 then there will be no degradation.
If any of the devices in the chain are FW400 then complete chain drops to FW400 performance.

  • Logic Studio - Presonus Firepod w/ Firewire 800 Drive (Firewire Issues?)

    Hi all,
Having a problem on this end. I had picked up a Lacie 160gig bus-powered external HD. I had wanted to run this over Firewire 800, but it's not working.
Whenever I open the HD, my audio cuts out and remains cut until I reboot the system. The Firepod is running off Firewire 400, still get a connection (blue light), but no sound.
The problem only exhibits itself when I open up the HD.
Anyone else having issues running an external audio interface via Firewire 400 and an external Firewire 800 drive?
    Thanks,

Have a FW400 Focusrite Saffire Pro and a WD HD on the FW800. They wont work together on the built-in FW400 and FW800 ports of the MBP. Had to get a FW400 Expresscard and put the Saffire on that and the HD on the built-in FW800 port to get them to work together. Also please notice how professional using a lot of capital letter acronyms makes me seem.

  • Plugging in my Firewire 800 Drive Shuts down power on Macbook

I plug in my G Drive Mobile 500GB drive (Bought at the Apple Store) And the moment the metal of the Firewire 800 drive hits the metal of my connector it cuts all power and the Computer shuts down. I can keep the Firewire in the computer and start it back up but it wont recognize.
For the record the drive works completely fine with just USB... Also my Apogee Ensemble works perfectly well in the Firewire 800 port.
Any idea what I should do?

Me three. EZQuest Monsoon 250 Gig hard drive, and I've done a tiny bit more troubleshooting: it happens whether the hard drive is turned on or not (haven't had a chance to try it when the drive isn't even plugged in), and it doesn't make any difference which end of the Firewire cable I plug in first: as soon as the connection is complete, the MacBook shuts down. After the shutdown, it doesn't think it has a battery, but most of the time this resolves itself after a couple of restarts. I haven't tried things like zapping the PRAM. Very annoying, since the hard drive is my primary backup, and I plug it in to my Mac every evening when I get home! I'll just have to shut the Mac down every time I leave work, I guess.
