Firewire 800 Expresscard/34

I have a problem with a Sonnet Firewire 800 Expresscard/34 with my Mac Book Pro. The card is ok, I tried it on a PC with an external HDD Wester Digital, power with his own powewr supply and everything was ok. Now I use it with my mac, and I see that Mac Os 10.5.X can see the card but I can't use it and the system doesn't mount the HDD on the desktop. I tried in OS 10.5.0 and Mac os 10.5.2 same problem, both on Mac Book Pro.
Thanks Iacopo

Hey don't know if you ever sorted out your problems ad after tht response about "no help for 3rd party blah blah" you've probably stopped using this site.

  • Dynex FireWire 800 ExpressCard Adapter...

I purchased a Dynex FireWire 800 ExpressCard.  My laptop acknowedges the card and it is visible in Devise Manager, however, it does not reccognize anything plugged into the ExpressCard.
The card is self powered but does have and optional 12v/2a DC plug which I am guessing is used for any device plugged into the card that does not provide it's own power.  The power adapter does not come with the card and there is no documentation that provides recommendations to the kind of power adapter to get.
I am connecting self powered devices to the ExpressCard and since I have verified I have the most current OS (Vista & all SPs) and drivers, yet Device Manager does not recognize anything other than the card, my guess is that it is a defective card.
Is there anything thing else I should check before returning the card for an exchange?
    Thanks,
    Zbowdawg

Vista installs the drivers automatically when I first inserted the card...  I did take it back and just exchanged it for another.  The new one has the same issue.  So even though the two firewire cables I have work on my other computers, I am going to try a new cable, and then if that doesn't work, I am going to take the card back for a refund.
I hope a new cable works because I have purchased Dynex products in the past with no issues.

  • Sonnet Firewire 800 Expresscard/34

The Sonnet firewire 800 express card doesn't work with latest mac os 10.5.2 update, I try also on another macbook pro (same hardware config.) with 10.5.0 and doesn't work either. I think problems are Mac os X 10.5.x drivers, because the system mount the card and in System profiler I can see the PCI Express line 3/4 hosting the firewire controller and PCI controller, but plugging any hardisk resoult in nothing mounted on desktop. The card is ok tested on a Windows laptop.
    Does anyone know a solution?
    Thanks

    Hi All,
I solved the problems with Sonnet's FW800 card on my own MacBook Pro/10.5.2 system so wanted to post here for the benefit of others using 10.5.x and the Sonnet card. There are at least two potential sources of the problem:
    1) From Sonnet tech support -- Try this trick and see if it helps:
Delete and empty trash for the three (3) following files and directories:
    /System/Library/Extensions.mkext (a file)
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches (a directory)
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.romextensions (a directory)
The last directory might not exist so don't worry about it if it isn't there. Restart after you do this so OS X will rebuild some of the files.
    2) TCP/IP networking -- simply disable it (Off rather than DHCP or Manual) on one or both of your Firewire interfaces in System Prefs/Networking. This is what made things start working for me on my own system.
    Good luck!
OS X can get confused if you add in peripheral cards that are duplicating function that exists already. The above often cures that problem.

  • LaCie Firewire 800 expresscard 34 - not working

Just received this card. Not working well.
    - My Mac completely freezed 3 times in 10 minutes (by inserting the card in the Mac or inserting a cable in the card)
    - It did not allow me (when not freezing...) my external Firewire Canopus card. Same for my external Firewire audio card.
    - Surpringly, worked OK to detect my external Firewire disk drive.
    Anyone had problems like this?

  • 2 different expresscard/34s with 2 firewire 800 ports are not fully recognized on new macbook pro 17" under lion

We have 2 expresscard/34s, a Belkin ec1394b2 and a Startech "FireWire 800 ExpressCard". Both are "reported" to suppport OS X but neither does more than show "PCI FireWire 800 ExpressCard" in the available interfaces list in Network Preferences with a status of "Not Connected". In the System Information report under "FireWire Device tree" it shows the built-in FW 800 port as "FireWire Bus"  with a drop down arrow which expands to the proper hard/software dtails and then "FireWire Bus" with no dropdown arrow, no more info.
Now that I have them I see no reference to mac or OS X but I've seen a number of reviews of these cards from OS X users who claim to be using them happily. It's a long weekend so everyones tech support is gone gone gone. Any suggestions?

    A) It seems your problem is an hardware failure. It happens and I don't think the way you use Firewire devices is the cause of that problem. It's just bad luck. That said, it's probably a good thing to use the power supply of your hard drive instead of bus-power.
    B) If you want a new computer and you don't need something portable, I think the iMac is an excellent choice for the price. Over a Macbook Pro, you'll gain a bigger screen, FW400 port, etc, and you'll pay less than if you buy a laptop.
    C) If you still want to go with a laptop, you can hook the Duet to your hard drive but I don't think the bus will be able to power both devices. Therefore, you'll absolutely need to use your hard drive's power supply.

  • ExpressCard vs Firewire 800 for HD-editing?

    Hi,
I'm just started at a filmschool and I need a laptop for HD-editing.
I was looking at the new MBP 15'', but it doesn't have the ExpressCard / 34 slot.
Is this a big problem? When isn't firewire 800 good enough?
    Thanks in advance

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

  • NitroAV FireWire 800/1394b Express Card (34)

After some foot dragging by FireWire direct, today I finally received the NitroAV FireWire 800/1394b Express Card ordered almost a month ago.
    First Impressions: Unimpressive at best.
According to the FireWire direct rep, it is supposed to work using the Mac OS built in drivers and require no additional driver....
Upon first insertion, my MacBook Pro promptly went into a kernel panic.
    NOT a good introductory performance!
Upon restart, I did get the thing to work, "sort of".
First, it requires AC power even with a 2.5" external drive meant for bus power. Bummer, but so be it. However, less acceptable: it is VERY fussy about sequence, reminding me of evil SCSI voodoo rituals from the past century. Seems it only likes to work once- if I remove the card, it requires a reboot to recognize anything attached to it subsequently.
Functionality is intermittent. Sometimes I can mount and unmount a drive several times in a row, sometimes just once before it fails to recognize the drive and requires another reboot. One drive it took a long time to recognize but eventually it did- only to freeze up rock solid soon thereafter requiring an uncomfortable long push on the power button to shut down- nothing else worked. That drive was a known to be working Lacie, the first a known to be working WiebeTech and both are totally reliable on my G5 and previously completely reliable on the MacBook Pro using the integrated FireWire 400 port.
Unscientific results so far show a modest speed increase transferring a few large files, nothing like double the FireWire 800 speed hoped for. In any case if it ain't reliable it ain't gettin' used. Hoping for a driver solution in 10.4.7? (Wishful thinking)
No one likes a fussy device, much less one doomed to corrupting directories with that kind of behavior. I'm disappointed with Apple for omitting the FireWire 800 port on the 15 inch model and leaving us with this cheesy "solution".
I am not a big fan of dongles, or things like Express cards which are just asking for trouble by introducing intermediary third party connectivity issues exactly like these...
Oh yeh, and the little metal door on the Express Card slot tends to hang open and not snap closed- just to add insult to the whole process.

Well, after two days of use I have a bit of data regarding the NitroAV (and Apple's implementation of ExpressCard/34).
First some general observations: like bigwheel, there are a few too many rough edges to be fully pleased. After inserting the card, a menu bar icon appears next to the Airport icon. On mouse over, the drop down shows "Unknown Vendor" and "Firewire Controller" are greyed out, while the 3rd "Power off Card" is selectable but does NOT power down the card. Looks like I have to shut down the MBP, then eject the Nitro card.
I also can confirm intermittent unmounting and remounting. My latest experiment is to leave the drive mounted and then have it wake up after sleep. So far it's worked once, but will post if it continues to find my FW 800 drive over time.
One major design flaw of the ExpressCard implementation - to engage the card you push in until it clicks, while to disengage the card you merely push in a second time. But how are you supposed to ATTACH FW800 cables?? I find I have to try to hold the ExpressCard firmly so it doesn't go in while fumbling with the FW800 connector. WAY too fussy...
OK, here's some actual test data, involving transfers of 1,000 MB of files (147 Canon RAW files, approx 7 MB each).
I used three hard drives for various transfers -
    1. Internal stock 100 GB - 5400 rpm (TOSHIBA MK1032GSX)
    2. FW 800 / 400 500 GB - 7200 rpm (Seagate 3500841A in OWC Mercury Elite case)
    3. FW 800 / 400 250 GB - La Cie 7200 rpm drive
All test are transfer of 1 GB of files from HD to HD-
    Test 1: Internal to FW 400 - 68 seconds
    Test 2: Internal to FW 800 - 65 seconds
    Test 3: MBP built in FW 400 daisy-chained - 54 seconds
Test 4: Nitro FW 800 daisy chained - 43 seconds
    Test 5: Nitro FW 800 port A to Nitro FW 800 port B - 43 seconds
Test 6: MBP built in FW 400 to Nitro FW 800 - 35 seconds
So it looks like there is some speed increase, but I was surprised that mixing the FW 400 and FW 800 ports gave the fastest transfer speeds! The Nitro card is dependent on Apple's implementation of buses, and this seems to be the winning combo. Not that intuitive that shifting one of the FW 800 devices down to FW 400 will speed things up, but that's what my simple test seemed to imply.
I didn't test read times only, but it would seem that these should speed up (and hopefully speed up my primary application of Aperture).

  • Can you connect Firewire 400 to Firewire 800?

Have had a Powerbook Titanium G4 and just got a new MacBook Pro. The TiBook has an 800FW port, the TiBook only a 400FW port. Can I connect the two directly? Is there a 400 to 800 adapter cable? I'd like to transfer files fast between the machines.
Currently I transfer files through an external hard drive that has both 400 and 800 ports. But it sure would be easier if I could get the TiBook to run in FW target disc mode with the MacPro. Any other suggestions for linking the machines?

    Hi
There's a couple of ways to do it:
One solution is to get an Expresscard (e.g. Belkin Firewire 400 which gives you an extra two ports). I bought one of these and then went and misplaced it!
Rather than buy another Expresscard, I bought a Firewire 800/400 cable (cheapo/no name, I'm afraid) from a small computer shop - it was a quarter of the price of the Belkin and works fine. I also got a small adaptor plug so I that I can connect connect my camcorder.
Of course, I found the ExpressCard a couple of days ago...
You could connect the computers by an Ethernet cable, too.
    Hope that helps.

  • Mixing FireWire 400 with FireWire 800

How do I connect FireWire 400 Peripherals and FireWire 800 Peripherals to the single FireWire 800 port and preserve the FireWire 800 speed to the computer for the Firewire 800 Peripherals? (Obviously, the 400 speed peripherals cona only send and receive at 400 speed.)
My guess is that connecting the FireWire 800 peripherals to the computer and adding the 400 peripherals at the end of the 800 daisy chain may work. However, recalling the mixing things in other contexts (USB 1.x vs. 2.x and WiFi 802.11g vs. 802.11n) drags every device down to the slowest speed. Will that happen on a FireWire 800 and 400 daisy chain?
Anyone know of a FireWire 800 hub?

You cannot. If devices of different speeds are daisy-chained, the speed of the entire chain will drop to the speed of the slowest device, in this case FW400. A hub won't help.
The workaround is to get an ExpressCard FireWire adapter, and connect one set of devices to that, and the other set to the MBP's FW800 port.

  • Express 34 Firewire 800

Is one available yet? If so where?

You shouldn't believe everything you hear!
Here's a link to the FAQ on the ExpressCard Site:
    http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/qa.jsp#14
    And here's a quote:
Speed. ExpressCard modules use serial (PCI Express and USB 2.0) data interfaces rather than the ISA (16-bit PC Card) or PCI (CardBus) parallel bus interfaces, improving bus speed in data transfer while reducing the number of signals needed in the interface (2.5 Gb/s [PCI Express] or 480 Mb/s [USB 2.0] for the ExpressCard interface vs. 132 MB/s maximum theoretical throughput for the CardBus interface.)
2.5 Gb/s will have no issues running Firewire 800. Personally, when I next buy an external drive, it'll be an eSATA.

  • Express card firewire 800

I need an extra firewire door on my MBP, I v the first 15" only with one firewire 400. Can any one advice on which model is working fine?
    Tanx a lot

Well. The bottleneck can be anything. It may be your external HDD. Firewire 800 just means that the maximum rate of transfer would be 800Mbps. The MBP has the PCI express 1x speed. That can support upto 2000 Mbps. So the expresscard wouldn't be a problem.

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • Sony J30 SDI Deck, New Mac Pro FireWire 800, Arrgghhhhh!!!!

Anyone else had this problem and got around it?
We have a new MacPro that only has Firewire 800. We usually shoot DigiBeat and capture via a Sony J30 SDI deck using Firewire (before you say it, I know, but its fine for what we need).
We have tried a FireWire 6 pin to 9 pin cable but FCP refuses to recognize the deck. Have tried another cable in case it was that.
We used a standard Firewire 400 cable from the deck to a Ext HD, then a Firewire 800 out of the HD to the Mac. Surprisingly this worked, Once!
Can you get a FireWire 400 for the new Mac Pros?

+A Mac Pro (desktop) has Firewire 400 and 800. (edit) Sorry, I didn't realize Apple dropped this from the desktops as well.+
Yup, Firewire 800 only now on the Pro macs.
+Are you referring to a new MacBook Pro? If so, only the 17" model can accept a PCMCIA card.+
John's talking about a MacPro tower, not a laptop. FWIW The 17" MBP sports an ExpressCard/34 interface not PCMCIA which is much older and slower technology. PCMCIA wont work in an ExpressCard slot without an adapter
+I think I would obtain a Firewire 800 to 400 (direct) cable (Apple store) and not daisy chain between the computer and the deck. Most Firewire problems can be traced to daisy chaining.+
I think John's first post mentions that he's already tried this ... unfortunately unsuccessfully as that would have been the obvious option.

  • Would an eSATA connection give improved speed over Firewire 800?

I have a 1 TB WD MyBook Studio edition which has FW 800 and eSATA interfaces. I have about 800 gigs of movies in iMovie format on this drive and I've noticed as it fills up, iMovie has gotten slower. I'm using the Firewire 800 connection. Would there be any speed gain if I purchased an eSATA ExpressCard adapter and connected to the drive via eSATA?

Well I'm just about to try an Expresscard SATA adaptor with this external Blu-Ray burner and my 15" MacBookPro, so I'll let you know how that goes..
..but I doubt if you'd notice any difference between FW800 and e-SATA. They are just the interface to connect the hard drive to the Mac. You've noticed that iMovie has slowed down as the drive has filled up ..and so there's more for iMovie to index and to keep track of. It's not the interface slowing it all down.
I don't think it's the connection (..the interface..) between your Mac and the drive which is slowing things down; it's the burden on iMovie to maintain an index of 800GBs of movie clips, and the ability of the actual hard drive inside the 'MyBook' housing to access and retrieve individual snippets of all that data. The access speed (..and rotational speed, and size of cache..) of the hard disc which is inside the casing is usually the primary limiting factor once the interface has been shown to be fast enough ..and it obviously is fast enough to work with iMovie (..FW800 I mean).
It's like having a library with just one book in it: you can find that one book really quickly! But if you have a library of 800 books, it may take a bit longer to find the exact one you want, irrespective of how wide the door into the library is!
I'd buy another drive, or offload some of what's on your MyBook, rather than buy an eSATA card. Once a drive gets close to 80%-90% full, it'll always be slower to access and edit what's on it. Empty it by half, and then 'de-fragment' it, so that all the files are contiguous, and all the free space is in one lump, and then it'll seem much faster ..till it fills up again!
Hard drive storage is always getting cheaper; I'd just leave that MyBook 80% full, and buy a new, empty one.
